  • Computer Does not Recognize IPOD

I have tried everything I can think of and any help would be great.
Narrative: I have two 60GB IPod, two 4GB Nano. I purchased each of them approximately 6 months ago and all have worked very well out of the box. About two weeks ago (I believe I can time it to the date of the last update actually) the two 60GB stopped being able to communicate with the computer(acutally, within two days of each other - not both at the same time). One day it worked great - the next I came up with a "USB device not recognized" error. I tried as much of the 5 r's as possible (I uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, itunes, made sure I had up-to-date hardware drivers, etc.) The one thing that I could not do was a restore as the computer does not recognize the ipods there is no way to use the restore software. The two nanos consistently have had no issues (other than not being able to hold all the information I need to carry).
I've removed/uninstalled the USB ports and let them get rediscovered - no change
Updated motherboard BIOS driver - no change
uninstalled and reinstalled itunes, etc - no change
thought about really hurting the ipod - no change sigh
Dreamed of kicking the ipod into the air Pele style - no change
Details: 60GB Ipod, Dell Inspiron 6000, Windows XP SP2, Latest drivers (to the best of my knowledge). Cable is tested (still works on Nanos and I've tried all four cables that came with the four ipods to no effect). USB ports recognizes all other devices that are tested.
I can't think of anything specifically that I left out but any help you can think of would be great. I have read through most of the posts regarding this issue; however, most of the threads have devolved quickly. About the only fix I have seen that would work is "you should have never purchased a PC in the first place, get a Mac and it will work fine." This is, of coure, not an option.

    hiya!
hmmmmm. that model is a Dell notebook, isn't it?
if so, we'd better quickly check on this possibility:

  • Desktop does not recognize 8310 after update to 6.0.1

The BlackBerry desktop software does not recognize my 8310 after updating to 6.0.1. I am running Vista 64bit, SP2. When I go into the device manager it shows a yellow triangle and says I need to update my driver. Do I need to go back to an earlier version of desktop?

    To manually install the driver:
On the computer, right-click My Computer and click Properties.
Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
Expand the BlackBerry category and verify that BlackBerry Smartphone is listed.
If an exclamation mark is displayed, right-click the smartphone and click Update Driver.
If the Hardware Update Wizard prompts you to use Windows Update, select No not this time and click Next.
Select the Install from a list or specific location option and click Next.
Select the Don't search. I will choose the driver to install option and click Next.
Click Have Disk and then select Browse.
    For 32-bit Windows browse to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\USB Drivers. For 64-bit Windows browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\USB Drivers.
Double-click on RimUsbNT.inf, click OK, and then click Next.

  • Computer does not recognize iPod, despite troubleshooting

I have had my iPod for around 7 months and it has worked perfectly until now.
I was cleaning my computer of old files, and I think I might have accidently deleted a driver or something because now, even though the iPod charges when connected to the computer, the computer will not recognize it. I got a new USB cable, re-installed iTunes, and done every other troubleshooting tip that the Support page offers. However, when I try to re-install the actual iPod software, when it comes to the message "Please plug in your iPod so it can be configured..." the computer doesn't recognize my iPod is plugged in and I can't continue.
    Any Help would be appreciated.

When re-installing the ipod software, have you tried resetting the ipod and re-connecting it, or putting it into disk mode to connect it?

  • "do not disconnect" does not disappear, computer does not recognize ipod

Hi, if someone can help me, I will be eternally grateful, as I have been struggling to fix this this for a while now.
The problem began when, one day, iTunes decided to not recognize the ipod and would not update any songs. (By the way I use windows xp on a dell laptop.)
I tried resetting the ipod, and using a different usb port and both did not work.
Then, I uninstalled Quicktime, iTunes, and the ipod software, then reinstalled everything again (all the newest versions). This didn't do anything.
After that I went to start > all programs > ipod > ipod updater 3.23.2006, in the attempt to restore the ipod and just erase everything. However, when the screen shows "plug in an ipod to update it," the update and restore options never become available. This is the main problem - I need to get that restore option available.
I changed the ipod drive letter as well. And if this helps at all, the ipod still works when I unplug it from the computer. But when I plug it back in to the port, again all I get is "do not disconnect."
I am trying to give as much information as possible, so, if this is important too - when I go to Manage under My Computer, and then Device Manager, anything regarding an ipod does not show up.
If anyone can take a moment and help me out, I would really, really appreciate it. Thank you for your time.
      Windows XP

I'm having almost the same problem. I get USB device is not recognized. I have a mini, using XP Pro SP2, IBM Thinkpad.
Here's the thing. This mini used to work just fine on my computer. As a matter of fact it will work on every other computer I plug it into except this one. In fact I tried two other ipods that work just fine on other puters but not mine. Obviously there's a prob with the config of the puter. There must be a silver bullet here I just don't know what it is.
    Here's what I tried.
    1. Uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and ipod updater
    2. Ran my spyware tool per advice here ... caught some spyware, but nothing that helped me
    3. Unchecked the power management in Root Hub of device manager
    4. This is one that got me somewhere for a moment ... I went into device manager and disabled anything that said high speed, advanced, or 2.0 under USB Devices ... after that my ipod was recognized, but I received the warning that it was a high speed device connected to a non-high speed port ... per instructions on this forum I then put the latest iTunes and used the most recent ipod updater ... after that I re-enabled the high speed and now it won't recognize again
I'm sure I did a bunch of other crap that did not work, but I think the fact that it recognizes when I disable the enhanced/2.0 hub should point to something specific. I'm going to compare settings with the countless computers my pod works on, but until then if anyone has any insight I'd love to hear it.

  • Itunes and computer does not recognize Ipod USB connection

First off, I know this has been discussed over and over, but I am not getting any difinative answers so, I will start a new post. I have a Ipod mini and have had it for some time without any problems. Recently I added new music to Itunes and wanted to transfer it to my Ipod, but when I connect the USB cable it does will light up the screen to let me know that it has been connected, but it will not update the ipod and itunes will not recognize it and only a few times has it even charged the battery. I have tried to update itunes, update ipod (which didn't do any good since it is not being recognized), restored my ipod with play/menu, tried different usb outlets, and today I am going to get my sister's cable and try it. What am I doing wrong?!?!?!? I am going crazy about this. Thanks for any other suggestions.

Finally, I got it to work again. This is what I did. I doubt this is what changed anything but I reset all of my settings back to factory settings on the Ipod as far as backlight, shuffle, ect. I don't think this is what helped, but who knows with these things. Then I plugged it into the computer and it did show that it was charging (usually it did not even recognize enough to charge). Then I tried a different USB cable from my sister's Ipod and the first thing it did was ask to update Ipod and I did (I had to to plug it in to the wall to complete update) then I plugged it back in my computer and it finally worked! My husband thought I was an idiot because I was cheering every time it recognized something until I was basically jumping up and down when everything was updated. For now everything is back to normal so I love my Ipod again. Although my sister will get my old USB cable back seeing that she dropped her Ipod in water and hers does not work at all. Which reminds me to start another post about that. Thanks for all the support.

  • My computer  does not recognize ipod and ipod freezes computer

    This is how it stated:
Today, I charged my ipod on another computer, like I always do, the itunes is to early (like 4.0) to even recognize my ipod, so on the computer it is only hard drive. So, I used the little green arrow icon in the right bottom corner of the screen, as in ejecting a jump drive.
My ipod is at the main menu. I decide to watch a television show until...all of a sudden, it freezes while it is playing. I press, play and pause again. Now the audio plays, but the screen is frozen. So I press the Menu+Center button and the ipod turns off and the Apple icon appears. Usually when i do this, the menu comes back on. But this time, the screen said somethinglike "You must connect your ipod to itunes and restore it..." in about 5 different languages.
I get home, plug it in to my computer, I try to pull up itunes, it does not come up until I disconnect my defected ipod. Everytime I plug my ipod in, the screen just shows the ipod charging in the gray, dark version--no green lighting battery, its all gray and black. And by the icon in the corner, the ipod does not have a low battery...
    Can someone help me?

    Have you checked

I followed the 2-step method. It worked for me.

  • Computer does not recognize Ipod. Also, issues with Home Sharing.

About 8 months ago I lost my Ipod classic which had thousands of songs on it. (Some were from my friends computer, but over 1000 were from mine.) I went out and bought a new one but when I tried to connect it to my laptop (an old Dell Inspiron 1150) the computer didn't recognize the Ipod. I'd been having computer problems for a while so when that happened I knew I needed a new computer.
When I got the new computer, my Ipod connected just fine with it but I knew that I needed to get the 1000+ songs from my old computer to my new computer. When Home Sharing came out I knew it was what I needed. So I connected the two computers through that method. My old computer took the library of the new computer (maybe 20 or-so songs that I had bought) but the library of my old computer wouldn't transfer to the new computer. I thought maybe it was something wrong with the new computer. However, I recently bought a Mac. I am having the same problems right now and am very anxious to get this problem fixed so that I can de-authorize that computer.
Has anyone else had a similar problem and solved it?

sounds like the only problem left is home sharing
maybe i can help with that.
what you want to see in iTunes is this (view from my MBP's iTunes seeing the library on my Mini)
if you then click on the house icon, it will change to this and you should be able to import any content from any shared library.
if the icon looks like this , home sharing has not been set up correctly.
in order for home sharing to work
    (a) iTunes on all machines must be authorized for the same iTunes store account
    (b) all machines must be on the same network
    (c) all machines must have access to the internet.
if none of the above makes a difference, try turning home sharing off on all computers, then turning it back on.
these reads will be useful: one and two.

  • Ipod 3rd generation makes beeping noise continuously + will not sync computer does not recognize ipod

touch screen doesn't work. the slider to unlock it won't move. it makes a beeping sound. then it displays a "now syncing" type of symbol on the front.

    Sound like two separate problems.
For the beeping part, you might be interested in this discussion thread.
Regarding the not-recognized-not-synced part, make sure you restart your iPod:

  • Brand new Ipod touch bought yesterday - Screen is frozen with an itunes emblem and cable. Unable to refresh or restore ipod. Computer and itunes does not recognize ipod.

This is first Ipod for me  - I have had less than one day. Screen is frozen with itunes emblem and cable. Unable to refresh/restore or do anything with ipod. I turn off/on and get the same frozen screen. My computer does not recognize ipod. Itunes does not recognize ipod so I cannot restore.... Should I take this ipod back and get a new one? Is this normal?

Before you can use the iPod you have to activate it by connecting it to a computer with iTunes.  Try the following to get your computer to see the iPod so you can activate the iPod.
