Computer doesn't recognize blank cd

Hi,
My computer was able to burn cds fine until a couple of days ago, and now when I insert a blank disc the icon doesn't appear on the desktop, and the "burn disc" option is greyed out. It appears that if I am in a program with its own burn disc option, such as itunes, I can burn a disc, but I can't burn it from the finder, so I can't burn most of my files. I tried cleaning the cache, cleaning the optical lens, repairing disc permissions, trashing preferences, etc., but nothing works. I think it's probably a permissions problem, because when I repair disc permissions it says it's changed the cd permissions to a new number, but then when I restart the computer the disc permissions actually haven't changed. Anyone have any ideas about how to fix this???

Repairing disk permissions should not be done using Disk Utility on an external disc or disk, but from the version of Disk Utility located on your internal disk in the Applications>Utilities folder. The internal version of Disk Utility is kept up-to-date when you update your system software.
