Computer Doesn't Recognize Ipod as a Drive

When i plug in my friends iPods they pop up on my desk top and i am able to access them that way but when my touch is plugged in the computer does not recognize it. Itunes will charge it and recognize it but my computer wont. Is there a way to fix this?

The iPod touch cannot be enabled as a disk drive and viewed on the desktop.

  • Have old files on new computer; doesn't recognize iPod

    Hi all,
Last month a PC that had been solid for five years gave up the will to live (may it rest in peace). Through the grace of all that is good in the universe, I had a backup of all my files. My iPod (30GB iPod photo) is in great shape (as it apparently saw no need to follow the suicidal activities of the PC - another blessing).
So now I have a new PC which seems to be quite the nice machine, and on it I have installed iTunes. I tried hooking up the iPod, but the USB connection didn't seem to recognize it. I have the new software (7.0.2.16), a good iPod, and a happy computer with the hopefully temporary character flaw that it doesn't recognize the iPod.
    1) What is the best way to get the computer to recognize the iPod?
    2) Should I just add the several thousand songs I have in the folders now on the new drive on the new computer to the new software, or should I try to do this backwards from the iPod?
    3) I also haven't authorized the new machine yet. Following a computer that's gone on to tech-heaven, is there a preferred way to do this? (and...)
    4) Is the order of these activities important?
I did search the archives to try to find the advice before, and found plenty that were similar but not quite the same. I probably went right by what I needed. Big thanks and a humble bow to anyone willing to take time to answer this.

    1. Your library with all you music on it is on your old laptop's hard drive. Remove the drive, put it in an external USB enclosure and import your music to the new computer.
    2. Try this to get your computer to recognize the iPod.

  • My computer doesn't recognize my CD/DVD drive

I am trying to install software for the camera I gave my husband for Christmas. On Friday I did install the software for the camera he gave me. I'm the only user of this computer and have done nothing unusual or different on it but for some reason it doesn't recognize that drive and I don't know how to overcome the problem. I've rebooted several times but that hasn't helped.
Can someone tell me what I can do to fix this problem. Please keep it as simple as possible as I don't understand computer terminology at all.
I'm desperate and don't want to have to take it anywhere to have it fixed.
    Thanks. Linda43

  • Computer doesn't recognize ipod touch

when I plug my ipod into my laptop via a usb cable, the computer doesn't see it...ie it doesn't show up in My Computer as it used to do.  It seems like this began when I went to IOS 5
I followed the troubleshooting steps (except the msconfig one) that start here
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipodtouch/assistant/itunes/#section_1
they talk about itunes not recognizing the ipod touch, when I guess my problem is that the computer doesn't see it.
    any help?  Thanks!

Did you already try to remove and reinstall all Apple related software, like explained in this article?

  • Computer doesn't recognize ipod nano

This started with a corrupted update attempt that many here have experienced. After going through the "5 r's, I ended up reformatting the data partition. It "worked", but the post-format behaviour was a little buggy. So I reformatted the data partition again. Now NOTHING on my computer recognizes the ipod. not itunes, not windows (so there's no way to reformat it- the reformatting tool doesn't see it)- the HP formatting utility doesn't see it either.
When it has juice, it just continuoisly flashes the white ipod icon on and off till the batteries run drytill it goes into hibernate mode. Its responsive to none of the buttons or the hold switch.
    Any ideas?

The solution was that I had to force ipod into disk mode by holding down the buttons ect- wasn't aware that was possible, but once I did it, I reformatted again. We'll see what happens...
BTW this WHOLE problem was CAUSED by the ipod updater utility.
Further, if windows doesn't see it as a disk after the ipod updater corrupts your ipod, neither will the ipod updater when you restart it. But I have to say the "force into disk mode" feature really saved my *** ion this one. Its on-off on the hold slider, followed by 6+ seconds of Menu & Select at the same time, then 6+ seconds of Select & Play at the same time(for those who don't know).

  • Computer doesn't recognize ipod touch 4g?

So, I recently updated iTunes to iTunes 11.
I've had this iPod touch 4g 8gb for 8 months now (same computer too) and I've never had a problem with it.
It wasn't until I updated iTunes that it started not to recognize it.
I've tried uninstalling itunes and reinstalling - didn't work.
I tried restarting computer, taking out the battery, disconnecting it - didn't work.
I tried using the device manager to uninstall it - didn't work.
I tried "DFU mode" (which really had no point because the computer itself won't recognize it, much less iTunes) - didn't work.
I connected it to another computer, said the same thing - "USB Device not recognized". I reset my iPod - didn't work.
USB cable seems to be fine, no scratches, no cuts. What should I do?

    - Try another cable
    - Inspect the dock connector for bend or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genus Bar of an Apple store.

  • ITunes can't connect with iTunes Store & Computer doesn't recognize iPod

When I put my iPod in the USB-port, it is recognized by my desktop for a short time as "Lucas's iPod", then, after like 20 seconds it turns to removable drive en than it just dissappears out of My Computer, so iTunes says it can't sync it because it can't find the drive (= the iPod). I searched for solutions, tried the 5 R's several times, nothing works and I'm desparate. I tried to Authorize my Computer in the Store menu in iTunes, by clicking Store > Authorize Computer > Fill in Apple ID and password. I did that, but when I clicked Give Authorization, it says (In Dutch, I tried to translate it as well as I can): iTunes cannot connect with the iTunes Store. The networkconnection has been refused. Check if the networksettings are right and if the networkconnection is active. Then, try again.
I don't know what is meant with my "wrong networkconnection". My internet works beautifully, I can use everything, but only iTunes won't work. Why is the networkconnection being refused? I'm getting crazy because I have my Ipod for almost 2 months and I didn't take it out of my house or even use it one time! Please, please, please help me!

honestly on a Windows I do not know how, there are programs that you can download that will tell you, and there are unix scripts that can tell you. to find out how, you might want to talk to somebody who owns a windows and is proficient in using it.

  • Computer doesn't recognize ipod and ipod freezes when connected via USB

My ipod has developed a problem.
    1. When hooked up to a computer it suddenly is not recognized by the computer--there is no "sync" noise and it odesn't appear in itunes. Also, all the buttons cease to function.
    2. Interestingly, it still works fine in my Boise player and also when in the car via audio cable.
    3. When i unplug it from the computer it works fine again.
    4. I tried a manual reset into disk mode hoping that i could "start over." Bad idea--still no connection AND now everything is off it.
Any ideas to help with this?
    Thanks a ton.

I have tried with two different cords and in different USB ports. I think it is an ipod problem, not a computer problem.

  • Computer doesn't recognize iPod

My Ipod (Classic 5ht Gen I think) is not recognized by my Mac though it works fine otherwise.
    resetting doesn't work
Also not recognized by my car (Toyota) when plugged into aux USB
    iPod version 1.1.2
    MAc OS 10.6.8

Does it still charge when connected to the Mac, and does the screen say Do not disconnect immediately after you connect it?  In case your USB docking cable has become faulty, do you have another one you can try?
Try putting it in Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1363
Then connect it.  Run Disk Utility.  Does the iPod's disk appear in the Disk Utility sidebar?

  • Not that my computer doesn't recognize iPod, my iPod doesn't recognize comp

i forgot to eject my iPod before disconnecting. Now when i plug it in to my computer, it charges, but does not show the "Do Not Disconnect" message or show up on windows/iTunes. i've tried resetting b/c thats the only one of the 5 rs that i can (without being recognized). what do i do now??????

If you're close to Atlanta you can take it to the Apple Store and have them look at it. If you want to try having it worked on you can check out http://www.ipodresq.com or use Google to find other repair places. Or you can buy a new one.

  • My Windows 8.1 computer doesn't recognize my iPod nano 7th generation. Why?

My Windows 8.1 computer doesn't recognize my iPod nano 7th generation. Why?
When I connect my iPod to my computer, nothing happens. I've read the tips in the section "support" and I noticed that maybe Windows 8 is not one of the operating systems that are compatible with an iPod nano 7th generation. If I'm right, what can I do if my only device is a Windows 8?

    Hi, Grafiti.
Thank you for the question.  Below, I have attached a couple troubleshooting articles that will help resolve the device not being recognized by iTunes.
