Computer doesn't recognize my iPad, wants me to start new.

I recently attempted to sync my iPad (16gb wifi). I haven't synced it since May. I am using the same iTunes and iMac that I was using when I first set up the iPad.
Whenever I attempt to sync the iPad, I am asked to register and I am asked if I want to start a new iPad profile or restore from a backup. I have many apps and a good amount of information I do not want to lose on the iPad. Is it possible to not lose any of the information on the iPad, or will I be forced to lose all of my info in order to sync to this computer?
Thank you.

First thing I would try is Resetting Sync History. In your spotlight search type isync and click on the top hit. It will open and then click on iSync in upper left corner next to apple symbol. Click Preferences and then click reset sync history. See if it lets you sync then. If not I would try to create a back up( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414 ) first and then when itunes asks you to create as new or from back up you can choose the one you just created. You can make a back up by right clicking on the ipads name under devices in the left column. Before you do this though you can transfer purchases( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848 ) and most apps for productivity and such have backup or syncing programs you can download from their support sites

If moisture got inside, it may have shorted the iPad's electronics.

  • TS1363 I want to move my itunes libarary from my PC to my ipad - itunes on my PC doesn't recognize my ipad as a "device

itunes on my PC does not recognize my ipad as a device.  Windows explorer does recognize that an ipad is attached.  What am I doing wrong?

    Hello LewRees,
I'd wager that it's not something that you're doing wrong, but possibly something that your computer's doing wrong. The following article would be a good place to start in the process of getting your computer to correctly recognize your iPad.

  • Latest iTunes update: computer doesn't recognize DVD drive

I updated iTunes and my computer doesn't recognize my keyboard and my DVD drive.
I was able to get the keyboard back by unplugging it and plugging it back in.
I had to do a system restore to get back the DVD drive.
I don't want to reinstall the update until I'm sure this won't happen again.

  • My computer doesn't recognize my iphone as a device

My iPhone 4S is full and I don't want to buy more storage. I am trying to move the photos on my iPhone to my PC (Windows 7) but when I use my USB cable to connect the two devices, my computer doesn't recognize the iPhone as a device under "Hardware and Sound." It does, however, realize that it's connected to iPhone when I dig around in the Control Panel tab. iTunes thinks I need to reconfigure my phone (sorry, not an option, iTunes!). Help!?!

Have you tried connecting to other USB port?
Once connected, an "autoplay" windows dialog box will appear asking "XXXX iPhone" import pictures and video, open device to view files, etc.
You can select either or to copy photos manually you can go to my computer and under portable device will show your iphone and go into to see all your photos and videos.

  • My Windows 8.1 computer doesn't recognize my iPod nano 7th generation. Why?

My Windows 8.1 computer doesn't recognize my iPod nano 7th generation. Why?
When I connect my iPod to my computer, nothing happens. I've read the tips in the section "support" and I noticed that maybe Windows 8 is not one of the operating systems that are compatible with an iPod nano 7th generation. If I'm right, what can I do if my only device is a Windows 8?

    Hi, Grafiti.
Thank you for the question.  Below, I have attached a couple troubleshooting articles that will help resolve the device not being recognized by iTunes.

  • I have an 11" MacBook Air.  When I plug in my VGA adapter to my Thunderbolt port, the computer doesn't recognize it ... unless I reboot the computer.  Is there another way to get the computer to recognize the adapter?  (It works with my MacBook Pro)

Thanks for the useful feedback, Knucklesmac. I agree. I must have blown something on the logic board -- because I had a faulty old KVM switch that would not switch between computers without some nasty hot-plugging/unplugging the VGA video cables. (wince!). It's like when Dizzy Dean ruined his arm because a line drive hit him in the foot and he readjusted his mechanics around the injury. I take the blame because this has been a great computer, and does not deserve any blame.
If it will help anyone else reading this thread, C2G (née Cables to Go) has some interesting ideas for still getting external video out of this computer:
    -USB-to-VGA
    http://www.cablestogo.com/product/30545
-Convert s-video or composite video signals to high resolution VGA
    http://www.cablestogo.com/product/40971
The price range is $75-$85, which doesn't make horse sense to me for such an old computer -- which has a lot of life in it anyway, because its own 15" monitor is not chopped liver.

You cannot override but you can chage it, the approach depends on the Mac OS X you are using.
