  • Computer doesn't shut down when PXI Chasis is turned off

    Hello,
I have realized that my computer doesn't shut down propertly if I turn off my PXI-1036 chasis before the computer is turned off. Is this a normal behaivour?
As far as I remember, the PXI-1036 chasis must be turned on before the computer is power on, and I think that maybe on the turning off I have to follow the same procedure.
Thank you very much for your advice,
    Héctor

Yeah, Robert's correct and I was backwards.  I haven't used my 1033 chassis for years.  Guess I should have tried it before answering.

  • Since I have installed Lion my computer doesn't shut down properly and I have constant problems with LR and Photoshop. Any suggestions?

Since I have installed Lion my computer does not shut down properly. I sometimes cannot eject a flash drive or eject a disc and my LR and photoshop constantly crash. I ran all the updates. Any suggestions? I purchased the upgrade online so I dont have a disc to reinstall it.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
If you have an optical drive, make sure there is no disc in it.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or shutdown failure, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Computer doesn't shut down after data acquisition

    Hi all,
We have software that performs data acquisition and analog output using Data Translation boards. At all our customers, if they ran this data acquisition, when they want to shut down the computer  (after closing exiting our program, of course) it looks as though everything is fine but the screen "Windows is shutting down" just stays there.
This does not happen on the developer computers, only on customer and testing computers. This does not happen if customer just opened software, looked at some files and quit the software. Only after running the data acquisition. Does anyone have any idea how to solve this?
    Thanks,
    Danielle

    Danielle,
I agree with what Tim said.  Something else to check is how are you handling the drivers for the Data Translation boards, i.e. are you closing a clearing all of the calls to the dlls.  I would also try using the NI I/O Trace to see if everything is being closed are if you are still communicating with a device.

Just done a replacement of the pata DVD drive (its new and is working ok),  and a fresh clean  install of Snow Leopard with all updates, iMac 5.1 behaves strange, sometimes I start Google Chrome and look at youtube videos the computer freezes and shuts down immediately,
I believe its  related to overheating ?

    Any ideas somebody ?
The hard disk has been previously checked with state of the art techniques that have confirmed that the hard disk drive is in perfect condition.

1.5-3 minute boot up as opposed to 15-20 seconds
    And
why it takes a long time to load a lot of things.
    I have restored this
    from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.
What you need to do to regain your speed is to understand how your machine works
    Why is my computer slow?
Fix any and all issues in software following this list of fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then follow this defrag method I've outlined
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
    Most commonly used backup methods
There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.
    Hope this assists.

  • Computer just randomly shuts down, is sluggish

    Hi all,
Been having a problem with my HP Pavillion 774e (runs Windows XP) for the past month or so now. . .it just shuts down at the most random times. Typically I will start the machine, get going on the internet, and then foom. . .it just shuts off and restarts itself. There are no error messages when this happens. It also seems very sluggish when I start it; it doesn't have the typical whir that it usually has; it's just slower and seems to catch and click a lot more than usual.  Sometimes when it restarts, it seems like it's trying to catch, like an engine that you are trying to start with a key, clicking and buzzing over and over.
I've tried a number of things to try to get it to not do this. I've opened up the computer, and cleaned it out thoroughly, I've run a malware scan, virus scan, run my copy of AVG PC Tuneup and cleaned things up, so I'm fairly certain it's not a virus/malware. I've also set the computer to not shut down on system failure in the control panel, and it doesn't help. I just can't figure it out. I've looked on many different forums for advice on what to do and I've seen advice about replacing motherboards, the power supply, etc.
I've also thought about doing a system restore (it seems to have begun when I had a windows update not install properly), but I'm concerned because if I go back that far, it would be before I ran the AVG PC Tuneup and downloaded a newer version of AVG 2012 (not sure if that would affect things, but it's why I'm concerned). I also worry because the thing doesn't stay on long enough to do anything; I just started it again and it shuts down in about two minutes. Safe mode also doesn't seem to help; it shuts down in there too.
Any advice on what to do with this machine? I don't want to junk it; it worked OK until just recently. But now, it's completely unreliable. By the way, I'm not an online gamer at all; I just want to use this thing for simple wordprocessing, powerpoints, and internet surfing.

seems like your power supply has started to show signs of it failing. Seeing that your computer is an older hp computer, its about time for something to show signs of getting wore out.

  • OS on external firewire doesn't shut down

Hi. I have an OS for emergencies on an external firewire drive. So after updating to OSX 10.5.8 my external firewire sometimes doesn't shut down when I used it as the bootdrive, and want to switch to my internal harddrive for booting (I of course select the start up disk in system preferences before shut down or restart). On both harddrives are 10.5.8 installed. So I don't know. I have done disk verify (and repair once on the external as needed) and I have done permission repair on both pretty often. Switching from the internal to the external firewire is no problem, but switching back sometimes is. What happens is when the external shuts down, after all apps are quit (by me of course), finder, dock and all desktop icons disappear, only the mouse pointer and desktop background pic stays, and nothing else happens. I never had this problem on Tiger. I suspect a conflict between the same OSs on both drives. If I can get the firewire to shut down correctly, I am considering to always hold down the option key at start up and there select which drive to boot from, instead of doing it before in system preferences of either running OS. Any thoughts are appreciated!!

Yeah. Thanks. But I also have the same problem with my internal HD. Freezes before log out sometimes. If I reach log out, then no problem to shut down or restart. Very strange....and in fact painful turning the computer off sometimes having to press the power button 10 secs.

My mail is stuck, and the computer will not shut down and the Mail is not responding. What should i do?

    Hi Clinton,
This happens to all the time and this is what I normally do. (Press and hold the pwer button until the computer shuts down) but, this doesn't seem to answer the real issue. Its just like you cut of the power to shut it down.

  • Macbook Doesn't Shut Down

My Macbook doesn't shut down when I use it for longer than 4-5 hours. Even if there are no programs running it still doesn't shutdown, the button may as well have a question mark on it because it does nothing.
Little help please. It's getting annoying having to hold the power button to shut it down.
(Restart and Logout don't work either but Standby does)

This same problem is happening to me also. Doesn't happen all the time but enough to be a problem. I will use the shut down menu option and then the desktop icons leave; however, the dock is still there. I have waited several minutes (over 10) to see if the computer will shut down. I finally have to push and hold the power button and then the computer shuts down. I have not been able to find a common issue for this--appears random.

  • As of late, my COMPUTER has been shutting down Randomly.....

Ok here is what is happening. I am on the compuer, and all of a sudden the whole screen goes black and the computer sort of shuts down. but not completely. i can't see anything or do anything, but when i hold down the power buttton and push it, after man tries, it eventually shuts all the way down. and then it takes a couple more pushes to turn the computer BACK on. the fan comes on, and it restarts. i am using Tiger, its a 1.2ghz ibok g4. and i'm about to cry.

Hi, Brenda. You have found the G3 Dual USB iBook Forum, but don't cry. The iBook G4 Forum can be found here:

I can only stop my Mac with the power button. If I don't use iTunes I have no problems to shut down the Mac.
Have anybody a similar problem and can help me? Thanks

    It's so curious...

I'm not sure whether this issue caused by Library/Preferences/com.apple.alf.plist.

I have an iMac that I purchased back in 2010 and over the past 9 month or less my computer just started shutting down while someone was in the process or working on it.  What could this come from?  Is there a simple solutions to this problem?

Which model iMac do you have?  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1758 How to identify iMac models
    Which OS is currently installed?

If not of the above works and you have AC, call them.  Let them deal w/it.  Otherwise, take your iMac down to your local AS or an AASP.  Diagnostic testing is FREE!

  • Computer refuses to shut down/log off

I have a MacBook running the latest version of OS X and it's exhibiting some very peculiar behavior. As the title suggests, it refuses to shut off or allow users to log off, furthermore, some applications don't open or work properly. I ran a verify disk and permissions and they've come back with zero errors. What should be my next step in troubleshooting these issues?

    Hello,
If your MacBook refuses to Shut Down, try this using the keyboard command for Force Quit. Command + Option + Esc. That will bring up the Force Quit window. If there any applications running, they will be listed there and your computer will not shut down until those processes stop.
As for applications not opening. Try locating and send their preference files to the Trash. I'll use iPhoto for an example. It's preference file looks like this:
com.apple.iphoto.plist It's located here: MacintoshHD/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. In that Preferences folder are the .plist folders for the applications you use. Send the .plist files to the Trash. It's ok.. your MacBook will create new .plist files for you You will have to reset your preferences on these applications but considering they aren't opening anyway, this might help.
Also, if you haven't already done so get a good disk utility that you can run to clean out caches and log files and repair permissions all in one fell swoop. I use Onyx, it's free and it's here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/onyx.html Download and install Onyx. Run the Maintenance and Cleaning scripts and reboot.
Hopefully something I've suggested will help.
    Carolyn
