Computer eats all available memory!

Why is it that my computer gobbles up all free memory until it practically grinds itself to a halt, operating with 10-50 MB free?  I have a 2008 MacBook Pro running 10.8.4 with 4 GB of RAM.
See the attached screenshot of Activity Monitor.  This is a common occurrence.  The only apps running are Safari and Chrome!  The computer runs like a slug, meanwhile there 1.5 GB of inactive memory.  What gives?  What can be done about this?  Thank you.

There is 1.5GB of inactive memory, see this page for memory explanations.

I have a 2007 iMac with 4GB of memory  OS X 10.8.4 with a similar amount of inactive memory but the system is not slow.
As Kappy says put as much memory in as you can but you may need to look further for your slow running.

  • CS5 not using all available memory/CPU

I'm sure this is the opposite complaint you usually get, but for some reason AME will only sometimes use all available memory/CPU power.  I'm on an 8 core Mac Pro, and while AME will sometimes register as using ~%1,000 CPU and just blitz through videos, other times it hovers around %100 and processes at regular speed.  Right now, for example, it's using about 600 MB of memory, leaving over 3.6 GB free.  Is there any way to assure that it always runs at max speed?

There's another thread with a similar set of issues. Other than the disk subsystem, there is another possibility for the bottleneck. That is, the codecs that are used to decode the input video files may not be efficiently multithreaded. Hence the codec responsible for creating the output file, the CPU and the disk subsystem all could be lightning fast and collectively they may all be waiting for frames to be served up by the decoder. You can check whether the disk subsystem is the bottleneck by creating a RAM disk (assuming that you have enough system RAM) and both putting all input files on and writing the output files to the RAM drive.

  • How do i make the vurtrel memory smaller, it eating all my memory, and i have to shut down alot cuz it freezes my computer.

every time i open firefox it eat tons of memory in both the VM, and Usages, then my CPU will start getting really high to a point where everything stops working. It only happen since the last two updates I have did with firefox, but getting to a point where i am thinking about going back to explore. I really like firefox too.

That would be command + 0 (zero) on a Mac.

  • PXI-SCXI in Linux running LV 8.0.1 consuming all available memory

Hi, we have the following environment here:
    Software
    - Mandriva 2006 PowerPack
    - LabView 8.0 with update 8.0.1 for Linux
    - DAQmx 8.0
    - DAQmx base 2.0
    Hardware
    CHASSIS  PXI-1011: PXI-8176, 512Mb RAM, 6052e, SCXI-1129 (we are using 7 of them), BORNES SCXI 1129: 1335,  matrix topology 8x32
     LV program
Two analogic acquisition tasks created and cleared in a non-simultaneous way (one for rotation measurements, and the other for vibration measurements), and a switching task, in a total of 54 sensors.
    Here goes the history:
After struggling (togheter with some NI folks) to configure this environment in Linux, now we have a different problem: In a matter of days our application eats all the available memory (swap and RAM) and freezes the PXI-SCXI.
    We have already checked:
    - (phisical) memories
    - all start-clear/stop threads (including different combinations of stop AND clear and only clear)
    - isolated our algorithm;
    - isolated all local variables and arrays (no global variables);
    - isolated all database related code.
In the end, after having only the acquisition tasks running, the LV process still eating aproximatelly 1Mb of RAM per minute, if we use a 1minute window for complete switch-loop and acquisition-loop.
We would like to know if there is some known workaround or upgrade that we are supposed to do to solve this problem.
Thanks in advance for all contributions,

    Hi Ratem,
Memory leaks is a little difficult to debug. I can see you have already done some procedures to isolate the problem. The tests indicate that the acquisition code is consuming the memory. It is possible if you are leaving some tasks open (in memory). All tasks opened must be closed to deallocate the reserved memory.
There are others possibilities to the memory problem. The linux itself can be the problem. Are you sure the memory leaks are only observed when the LV program runs? If it's the case, I will suggest you to do a simple vi, a while loop with a timing function. Does this simple program show the same behavior?

  • VM does not assign all available memory to Server 1.5Gig missing

We have a number of different servers all with 5gig memory. However I can only assign 3046m to the VM
I am running on Oracle VMs with Oracle Enterprise Linux 64bit on these machines. However there is a large discrepency with the Memory on the VM and the actual memory in the machines, here is some information I have:
On the server itself if I do free -m gives me:
    Total: 563 used: 205 free: 357
    xm info|grep mem gives:
    total_memory : 5046
    free_memory : 1343
    dmesg |grep mem gives
    vmalloc area: e4800000-feffe000, maxmem 377fe000
    Memory: 495616k/584704k available (2051k kernel code, 80632k reserved, 818k data, 176k init, 0k highmem)
My understanding of the above is that the Machine is allocated 0.5gig and the Current VM is assigned 3gig leaving almost 1.5gig unassigned and free. However, if I log into the VM Manager and try and assign the extra free memory to the VM, I get an error saying the maximum I can assgin is 3046.
In VM Manager I check the sever tab for the machine the VM is assgined to I can see:
    Memory Size(MB): 3046.
xm list gives the following information, which I think sort of confirms my assumptions:
Name ID Mem VCPUs State Time(s)
    70_ebstestapps 1 3046 2 -b---- 303.6
    Domain-0 0 563 4 r----- 83.4
I am guessing this is my problem. Although the memory is available on the machine, when creating the server with VM Manager it is only picking up 3046!! I am unable to edit this value and have tried rebooting the server but the same value appears.
How can I fix this problem? any help in this would be greatly appreciated.

    -Hi,
By reading the various e-mails it appeared as if people were complaining about the "server itself" seeing ~512Mb and it was on that basis that I send out my reply.
We have a 8 Quad-Core CPU system with 128Gb memory connected via Fibre Channel to a series of storage arrays. The storage array control software is installed on the base (dom0) VM so the device can be accessed via the fibre channel controller, and the storage can be configured and manged without any of the other virtual machines being create and/or running, as that is the storage were the VMs will ultimately be stored. The storage can be controlled over the network but that would require yet another system and we are trying to minimize the amount of hardware needed to manage the server. With only 512Mb of memory available to the dom0 VM, the software installation was taking forever because all of the 512Mb of physical memory available was used, and the system was swapping. So far everything is "working" for us so there must be enough of the Linux OS there to run the storage array control software.
My reply has no bearing for people addressing difficulties assigning some or all of available physical memory to virtual machines they create. Sorry for any confusion, but I'm new to OVM as well...

  • Time Machine Eats All Available Space

I have a new iMac 20 inch, using a WD "My Book" 1 TB drive. Setting up time machine, it uses all the drive space until error for "out of space".  I have 300G of space used on the iMac hard drive, and it seems to do the math correctly on how much to back up and how long that will take.  But, after the little bar fills up for the back up it keeps going, counting up the space on the external drive while saying 5 seconds left, and eventually it fills up the drive backing up 300G and writing it out as 980 G.
Any ideas on what causes this behavior?  I've removed all the files from the WD external, and used disk utility to make sure there's no structure problems on the external drive.  Support pages have no information on this - I've gone through the troubleshooting pages already.
(By the way, the new support community seems to encourage cryptic new discussion titles, since the new discussion box seems to be the search box).

This does not seem to be going as expected.  I was expecting some diagnostic information, but only the start messages are found:

I think the problem might be related to how migration assistant copied over programs from my older computer (an iMac G5), which contained a Western Digital utility of some kind that seems to be crashing, if I'm interpreting this right.  Maybe there was some software upgrade I should have done?  But, the drive mounts and I've been able to read and write to it:

  • Lion suddenly uses all available memory

It seems to happen randomly. all of a sudden I get the beachball Activity Monitor says root kernel_task
it has 4Gig mem 2.8 core 2 duo seems like it just all of a sudden it boggs down.using all memory. then after afew minutes it goes back to normal.
    any help would be great...

IF you are using Safari my guess is that is the culpirt. Open Activity Monitor and click the System Memeory tab to see what apps are using most of  your RAM. As mentioned keep a close eye on Safari.

  • OracleVM doesn't see all available memory

After installing OracleVM on DELL 6650 with 8GB of RAM, OracleVM can see only 679MB??
BIOS detected proper 8G of memory.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks AGagne
Just realised I was looking at dom0.
    Sorry for asking stupid question.

  • When will Firefox stop eating all my memory?

For the past few versions, Firefox has been a memory hog. I have done a fresh install of my entire OS (Windows 7) and Firefox, ran it with no plugins, and still have the problem. I've got my plugins installed now and it's not much worse than it was before. This is ridiculous. It regularly consumes up to 700+MB of memory and if I don't monitor it carefully, it will creep up to over 1.5GBs. Not even Photoshop is that obnoxious to me.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== Ever since 3.x or so

Ok, I found the solution (for at least my boxes!) Yay!
The trouble is that Firefox changed the amount of HTTP connections it permits simultaneously from 30 (pre version 6) up to 256 for version 7. Each connection uses CPU and Memory!!!!!
I won't ponder why they did that, but the fix is easy:
Lower the max number of HTTP connections
In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter.
The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I'll be careful, I promise!, to continue to the about:config page.
In the Filter box at the top, type network.http.max-connections.
Double-click on the network.http.max-connections preference, the "Enter integer value" dialog box will open.
In the field, type 30 which was the default value in old versions of Firefox and click OK.
My version 7.0.1 firefox suddenly started working! Yay!

  • LR 3.3RC still eats all available ram and swaps during preview

I didn't see anything about ram issues being fixed in 3.3rc1...  and can confirm I'm still seeing problems.
If I preview and rate 500 images LR starts swapping, as it ate 16gig of ram.  After that, everytime you preview a couple of more images, it swaps another chunk of ram to disk and allocates more.
Personally, I think this is a bit excessive...
Any word on when this will be fixed?
    Cheers!
Mac, 64bit, 16gig ram, dual quad core processors

It is a known and unfortunate limitation of how our current lens profile installation/uninstallation works. The workaround is to reinstall LR 3.2.

  • AdobeCrashDaemon eats all memory

    Hi,
I believe it started happening after I installed CS5.5:
After running for some time, AdobeCrashDaemon eatch all available memory and basically makes the computer non-operational.
Quitting AdobeCrashDaemon from Activity Monitor solves the issue... that is until AdobeCrashDaemon eats all memory again.
It occupies some 4.8 GB of Real Memory (Mac Pro 2x2.66 GHz, 7GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.5.8).
I usually have InDesign, Photoshop and Dreamweaver open + open other versions of InDesign sometimes).
I hope this issue can be solved ASAP because it's impossible to work like this.
    Thanks,
    Leo

This is worth a try (I've never had or heard of such a problem) because sometimes preference files become corrupt.
If you go to this path:
    Users > [yourname] > Library > Preferences
You'll see there is a preference file for the Adobe Crash Daemon named "com.adobe.crashreporter.plist"
Try moving that to the Desktop, then restart your computer. It will probably be recreated when needed which might fix the problem.

  • Windows 7 - AudioDG - Stolen all my memory!

Please help me. Why is AudioDG eating all my memory?
OK, so I rushed down to the shops for Windows 7 Ultimate.
    Installed perfectly on my machine.
All my drivers seem to work great and are all present and correct.
I treated myself to 4gb of extra memory and 4tb of hard dri've space. (Mainly because Windows 7 ate it all).
Turns out it's also eating my 4gb of extra memory now it's plugged in as well.
Windows 7 64 Bit. X-Fi XtremeGamer. Latest "release" version drivers from Creative.
ASUS P5NT-WS (Holywood Trio) motherboard. 8gb of memory.
    nVidia GeForce 8600 GT 52mb
    Version 6.0..373
    03/06/2009
(All other software applied after driver install automatically by driver update program included)
    Onboard Audio disabled
No modifications made to OS at any level. Perfectly clean install with "release" versions of all drivers.
If anyone can help me with this, I'll donate sperm. I've tried Google, but everyone seems to have this problem and no one seems to have solved it (at least not on the first 8 searched pages or so).
    Thankyou for reading.
(If this is a known issue, please just let me know and I'll gladly wait for new drivers).

/Re: Windows 7 - AudioDG - Stolen all my memory!? Due to the lack of a response from Creative on this one (and my failure to find a common solution), I tried installing O&O Clever Cache (which I had installed on my previous Windows XP Pro installation). It's very good and I've never once had a single problem or error with it pertaining to it's use or compatability with other programs.
The only option I've set in the program are:
    Extras Tab on left:
    Memory Use:
"Prohibit the swapping of kernel to disk"
And rebooted. Now AudioDG is only taking up 0,222 kb. (Just over 0mb). Which I assume is about right.
This isn't an advert for Clever Cache, I'm pretty sure the option to prohibit swapping of Kernel to disk is a registry tweak you should be able to find for Windows 7 on a lot of customisation sites. I'm not quite sure if it's clever cache or the swapping kernel to disk tweak that's made the difference. Anyway, it seems to have worked for me (with the Disabled Optimasations option left unchecked and all X-Fi features enabled - which is the main thing).
Hope this helps you folks who kindly posted on my thread. Shame there's no official response to this from Creative, who yet again seem to be leaving many of their customers out in the technical wilderness, searching for their own solutions. Remember when Windows Vista was release and the X-Fi wasn't even supported? I do. Shame on you Creative. Maybe you should spend a bit of the money your customers spend on your products to communicate with Microsoft (rather than waring with them) and getting your products fully supported and more importantly WORKING.
PS. I'm using Clever Cache version 6. build 2332 which works without modification or issue on Windows 7 64 bit. You can download a trial from their site (register up first). The rest you can download on many "other" sites

  • Available memory dropping to cause 8101 memory error

    Hi,
over the weekend I updated our system from GW6.04 to GW 8.00. The problem I now have is that the server OES 6.5 SP7 abends after running for "a while"
I have tracked the issue down to the POA. It is just consuming more and more memory. (not releasing any). If I unload and reload the POA, all available memory is freed.
Current user count is 71. Server memory is 3gb.
    Any guidance appreciated.

I have 21gigs allocated to the program.
Is the bottleneck the cache memory?

How to Remove “Other” Data from iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch
    http://www.igeeksblog.com/how-to-remove-other-data-from-iphone/
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.
