Computer Engineering and MBP

I know this question has been asked before but I can't find a RECENT post on this subject.
I'm going to Mississippi State University in the fall for Computer Engineering and I was wondering if the MBP would be a satisfactory selection. I asked me professor if an Apple computer with an Intel processor would be an okay computer to have. He told me that "it's not encouraged.. in fact, it's discouraged to have an apple computer, even with Intel." I thought that the new Macbooks have the ability to run Vista and OSX? Are there bugs i'm not aware of? Should I just keep my mac or shell out more money for another computer? I'm really just emotionally attached to my mac and don't want to let it go!
Here's the list of computer requirements for the engineering college that they gave me:

Edit: They recommended the Dell Latitude D830. I hate Dell.

Wow they must do things really backwards over there. Here at the University of Washington CSE dept (look it up :D) Macbook Pros (some 17 inch) are common ground.
Of course the CSE professors and grad students pimped their rigs out with the standard upgrades- 7200 rpm drive, 4 gbs ram, 2.6 ghz proc (max available) etc etc.
I got one and it was ok.
Dual boot if necessary, other wise grab a copy of VMWare Fusion (your school may provide vista at a deep discount) and do it that way. You'll notice no difference, especially in "coherence" mode.

LabVIEW Run Time Engine and ActiveX Automation Server

Hi,
I have a question related to LabVIEW Run Time Engine and ActiveX Automation Server:
We have a tool developed in LabVIEW and TestStand. End user interface is a LabVIEW GUI (it's an executable) which executes TestStand sequences. Some TestStand sequences call lower level LabVIEW VIs.
Everything works fine with LabVIEW installed, but I was wondering if I could run this tool on deployment machine with only LabVIEW run time engine installed. We are using LabVIEW 6.1 and with only the run time engine installed, I get the error message: "Unable to launch the 'LabVIEW.Application' ActiveX automation server ".
BTW, we are planning to upgrade the versions soon.
Is it possible to make things work only with the run time engine?

I did upgrade to LabVIEW 8.0 and TestStand 3.5. Everything works fine on the development computer where LabVIEW and TestStand is installed. On the target computer in the lab, I installed LV RTE 8.0 and TestStand 3.5, and now when a VI is called in a sequence file, I get the following:
RunState.PreviousStep.Result.Error.Code -18002
RunState.PreviousStep.Result.Error.Msg "LabVIEW: The VI is not executable"
So, the executable opens and works fine (which means that the LV RTE is installed properly), but when a sequence calls a low level VI, it does not make it through.

Computer crashes and has to be shut down whenever Firefox is opened.

The problem started when I tried to open specific websites and then it worsened so that whenever I attempt to go to a page other than the Firefox home page, my computer has to be shut down. I can open Firefox but I can't do anything else; it even bombs my computer when I try to do troubleshooting. The problem doesn't occur when I use either Safari or Chrome.
Have tried the following:
1. Resetting preferences.
2. Doing a clean reinstall.
3. Opening Firefox in safe mode.
4. Updating active plug-ins.
I can't send any crash reports because there are none listed. I think it's because the computer bombs and is unable to record any info. I've tried to attach the troubleshooter.xpi file below, but it never loads. Don't know if it's because I'm working in Safari.

Ok, sorry to hear that the crashes are not recording. I did notice that there was an issue with the graphics card. There are two things we can try:
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
Then perform these steps:
#Open Firefox ''Options'' window (''Preferences'' on Mac or Linux) as follows:
#* In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and select ''Options'' for Windows or ''Preferences'' on Mac or Linux.
#* In Firefox 28.0 and previous versions, click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
#In the Firefox Options (or Preferences) window, click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select ''General''.
#In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
#Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.

I will be doing some computer programming and I feel like reading code on a smaller screen could be a bit of a pain. Also, what is the best option in terms of backup? I don't anticipate having a lot of video but I will have some pictures, music files as well as regular documents and spreadsheets. I'd also like to get an idea of how good the battery life is. The 13" will do the trick for what you describe as your needs, Be sure to consider how you will backup your data -- need an external drive?
Also be sure to check with your college or division of study to see what they recommend. If they are hostile to Macs, you may be on your own for finding support. But in most major cities, that will not be too hard.

TestStand gives you the ability to create "sequence files" which are lists of tests to be run sequentially or in parallel. These tests can be written in any language: LabVIEW VIs, C/C++ DLLs, EXEs, ActiveX objects, .NET Assemblies, etc.
You can run your TestStand sequence files from a command-line prompt using the following syntax:
\bin\SeqEdit.exe" /quit -run
This will launch the TestStand Sequence Editor (and optionally prompt you for TestStand login information if you have this configured), run your sequence file, then exit.
If you're using the TestStand process model, it can output your results to a report file or database if you configure this. To use a TestStand process mo
del to execute your sequence file, use the following syntax:
\bin\SeqEdit.exe" /quit -runEntryPoint
Here's an example:

Note that multiple sequences and sequence files can be specified on the command line.
TestStand supports remote sequence execution using DCOM (Distributed COM), which is an east way to remotely execute tests. But as for running tests or commands through a telnet or serial interface, you would have need to check Windows documentation on how to execute command-line remotely like this.

Can the runtine engine and an application be run directly from a CD?

Can an application be run directly from a CD without installing the runtime engine and application onto the computer?

It depends on what library functions the application is using and what version of LabVIEW it was built in. In LV 7 and earlier you could just put the run-time files (the ones in Program Files\National Instruments\Shared\LabVIEW Run-Time...(lvrt.dll is the most crucial of the files, a full list can be found here on the developer zone)) in the same folder as the application and it would run without any problems in most cases.
In 7.1/7.1.1 math functions had to be installed as well if you had used any of those and could be a problem, otherwise it still worked (we do this still with apps that use serpdrv instead of VISA).
With LV8 it is still possible, but the chance of the application depending on some function that you do not get included this way is much higher, I would just test it and see how it goes.

Problems with Safari 7.1.2 search engine and home page preferences

I'm using Mavericks OSX.9.5 on Safari 7.1.2. I set my Safari preferences to use Google as the default search engine, and apple.com as my homepage. However, Safari keeps opening the search engine to yahoo.com, and my home page as only-search.com. I have no idea what is going on. I feel like my computer as been hijacked! I've quit and restarted Safari, only to find that the preferences is showing Google correctly as my search engine (but still goes to yahoo), and my homepage reverts to only-search com. No matter how many times I change it in Safari preferences I can't get it to work correctly. I've reset Safari completely, with the same results after the reset. I'd appreciate any suggestions and help.

Arch Linux for Google Compute Engine

I’ve created a tool that can create an Arch Linux image for Google Compute Engine. It has the compute-image-packages software preinstalled so basic GCE integration works.
I’m working to improve the boot times and shrink the image since it’s a bit larger than I’d like it to be. You can follow the instructions below to boot a virtual machine running Arch.

Instructions to boot a VM with the image:
1. Create a project or pick an existing one. Turn on Compute Engine.

When I try to log in to the Centrelink site computer freezes and have to reboot router but this does not happen with Internet Explorer

I am Nikhil. I am a final year student of BE Computer Engineering course. I have a fair knowledge of C++ and good knowledge of JAVA programming.

Please test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
Step 1
Take the applicable steps in this support article. The Wireless Diagnostics program generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
Step 2
Disconnect all USB 3 devices. If you don't know which are USB 3, disconnect all USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. If you find that Wi-Fi works better with Bluetooth disabled, you should use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. Your router may not support it; in that case, you need a new router.
Step 4
Open the Network pane in System Preferences and make a note of your settings in the Wi-Fi service. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the various tabs in the preference pane. If the preference pane is locked, unlock it by clicking the padlock icon and entering your administrator password. Delete Wi-Fi from the service list on the left by selecting it and clicking the minus-sign button at the bottom. Then recreate the service by clicking the plus-sign button and following the prompts.
Step 5
Reset the System Management Controller.
Step 6
Reset the PRAM.
Step 7
Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.

I would recommend you to use 0FI_AP_4 rather using both, particularly for many reasons -
1. DS: 0FI_AP_4 replaces DataSource 0FI_AP_3 and still uses the same extraction structure. For more details refer to the OSS note 410797.
2. You can run the 0FI_AP_4 independent of any other FI datasources like 0FI_AR_4 and 0FI_GL_4 or even 0FI_GL_14. For more details refer to the OSS note: 551044.
3. Map the 0FI_AP_4 to DSO: 0FIAP_O03 (or create a Z one as per your requirement).
4. Load the same to a InfoCube (0FIAP_C03).

All iTunes content on your iPod Touch should be in your iTunes library on your computer, and your iTunes library on your computer should be included with your computer's backup along with all other important data - stored on an external drive or some other external media used for backup purposes only.
When music was purchased on a CD, if the CD was lost and you returned to the store where the CD was purchased with your receipt, were you given a replacement CD?

How to install LV runtime engine and run .vi's in linux

I am attemtpting to load run time engine and run a .vi on Linux system.
Here is what I have done so far.
1. I don't have rpm on my system (gentoo) so I used the app on the install cd called INSTALL.norpm to install
labview70-rte-7.0.1.i386.rpm. It looks like it worked, there are a lot of files copied to /usr/local. A couple of .so files and a directory called Labview-7.0 (12M of files).
2. Made a test vi on other linux box that has full development system installed (also gentoo but i have rpm on this system).
    Do I need this application builder i keep hearing about to make an .exe or can I run vi's with this run time engine?
    What is the syntax to run a vi in linux? ./test.vi   ????
    Is application builder a seperate program that I must purchase?
When I attemp to run a vi I get garbage printing to the console, not unlike when you cat a binary file.
Any help would be appreciated. Is there instructions somewhare??? A manual perhaps that explains rte install and operation.

You need the application builder to create an exe. The rte by itself will not run a VI. The exe does require the rte. It is possible to create a "loader" program that you can use to run separate VIs but the loader program must be created with the app builder. The app builder is a separate add-on or if you buy the professional version of LabVIEW, it comes included with that.

iTunes Store- Authorize or deauthorize your Mac or PC.
In iTunes you use the Authorize This Computer or De-authorize This Computer option under the Store menu in iTunes' menubar. For Windows use the ALT-S keys to access it. Or turn on Windows 7 and 8 iTunes menus: iTunes- Turning on iTunes menus in Windows 8 and 7.
