Computer freaking out

i have a powerbook g4 1.67 ghz laptop and the past two days it's been freaking out. last month, it got the harddrive replaced (it crashed) the motherboard replaced and the screen replaced (screen flickering).
but as of yesterday, it's had a few issues, upon startup, instead of going to the grey/white background with the apple logo, it proceeds to stay black for 5 minutes than will start up normally. it's never done that before and the black screen scares me, i've tried resetting pram, etc, nothing is appearing to work.
second if i close the laptop it just shuts off and i have to restart it. i've always had it on going to sleep mode and it no longer is doing that and i must restart.
third, the battery light is green and appears to be fully charged, but the computer says it's only 61% done. and it can't even calculate estimated time.
any help to any of these questions would be great. i've been researching it and trying to find answers but no avail

Who did these repairs last month? I would take it back to them, hopefully they warranted their work.

  • Computer freaked out after auto updates!! HELP!

    Hello,
I REALLY need help. Up until now, I have been running OS 10.1. I recently found my misplaced Jaguar (10.2) discs and installed them on my G3 ibook. The installation went fine, but then I downloaded the automatic updates from apple. Upon restarting, my screen was distorted with vertical lines and strange colouring. I can sort of see things, but it is even difficult to locate the mouse. I tried to reinstall Jaguar, but it told me that I have a newer version of the OS on my hard disk and can't update. PLEASE help, I'm desperate.
    Thank you,
    Candace

When you booted off the Jaguar disk to try to re-install, did the screen look okay? If so, that is a good sign and we can hope that you have a software problem and not a hardware problem.
One thing that you might try is to reset your PRAM and NVRAM as described in Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM. These things play a role in the cpu getting connected to various devices, such as the video board, and perhaps something was scrambled.
If that does not work, I suppose that considering a re-install is the way to go. I am not sure why you ran into the problem that you described. I don't have a Jaguar disk, so I cannot check into this. One thing I am wondering is about the options that you have for installing Jaguar. If you have an option to upgrade an existing operating system and you used that, you would have not been allowed to do that. When you did the software updates, your system was evidently upgraded to a newer version of Jaguar than what is on your disk. The installer will not let you install the older software under those circumstances.
I am assuming that you also have a couple of other possibilities for re-installing. One would be an Archive and Install, which would save your account and settings, store your home folder in a Previous System Folder and possibly wipe out 3rd party applications not in your personal space. Or, I suspect there is an option for an erase and install, which would erase everything from your hard drive; i.e., you would lose your data. However, sometimes an erase and install fixes problems that an archive and install cannot fix.
Before you proceed, I encourage you to read the documentation on the Jaguar disk and find out what your options are. Make sure you understand what will happen when you select these options. If you have questions, please post them here and someone will try to help you.

  • [N97 mini] phone freaks out when I want to pick up...

Is there some sort of workaround, tweak or app available that can prevent my phone from freaking out when I want to receive a phone call? It is simply impossible to see who is calling because the display will not display anything for a few seconds when it's rotated. It is also not possible to use the slider keys to pick up or decline the call. Is there some way to prevent the display from rotating without disabling auto rotating all together?

    1. iTunes Menu > Store > Authorize This Computer
    2. iTunes Menu > Store > Sign in
    3. iTunes prefs > Devices > Prevent .... from syncing automatically
    4. With iTunes open, connect phone
    5. iTunes Menu > File > Devices > Transfer Purchases
    6. iTunes Menu > File > Devices > Backup
Now safe to sync.  You will lose any music/media on the phone that was NOT purchased from the iTunes Store (i.e. ripped CD's, MP3's from other sources)

  • Display on iMac freaking out

My wifes iMac (Intel 2.66 GHz/1 G Ram/ 20" display)has recently began to freak out with numerous blank blocks on the screen (up to 12) opening up when switching applications. It doesn't happen when working in an app, only switching between apps. The blocks can not be closed on the screen, they are frozen. You must shut the computer down and reboot to continue working. Sort of like Expose going nuts. Has anyone run into this situation? Any advise?

Unless this happens only when playing a video, you'll probably want to ask this question in either the iMac or Mac OS X forums since it's probably not a QuickTime problem per se.
    Regards.

Did you try resetting PRAM as a first step? Some display settings are stored in PRAM.

  • Display "freaking" out, internal issue?

For a long time now, my display will randomly "freak" out. What do I mean by freak out? I mean, it starts getting stretched vertically and horizontally, half of the top (lets say half of safari) will be at the bottom, etc. I have to move the display back and fourth until it stops. To see if this was an OS issue, I screen shared with someone else. I was able to finally recreate the issue, and they saw no problems. I'm guessing that this would be a wire being squashed or something.
I've never dropped or done anything to my computer that would cause this. In fact, this started a month after purchasing it and I've been dealing with it for a year now. Recently, it's been getting worse and won't go away.
Anyone got tips? Should I just go to the store and ask them what to do? If they are going to make me pay to fix it, I'll be pretty frustrated as I've done nothing wrong. Is this a faulty display? Am I liable for a replacement computer?
    Thanks.

Do you have the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics chip? If so, you might be having this problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
If you have access to an Apple Store, there is a specific diagnostic test they can run to find this problem. If this is what it is, the repair will be done at no cost to you.
I agree with eww that you should have reported this problem to Apple before the 1 year warranty was up. No matter what it was, they would have fixed it under warranty. Now unless it turns out to be the NVIDIA problem, you are on your own.
    Good luck!

  • Display freaking out, flashing, fan spinning

Hello all. My MBP (from about February/March) just suddenly started flashing the display when I got home today - a regular, pulsing, strobe-like flashing that makes it impossible to look at it. The fan also starts spinning like crazy, though I wouldn't say the computer seems hotter than usual.
I have rebooted, booted off the start disks, unplugged everything and rebooted again - nothing makes any difference. Trying to go to Displays in System Preferences just hangs.
I'm writing this on an external monitor at the moment, which is behaving fine, so it's something about the laptop itself. I have an appt tomorrow at the Genius Bar but I'm freaking out because I have a deadline for some work... does anyone have any ideas? It does look like a hardware thing...

Have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test? It's on Install Disc #1 of the gray discs that came with your computer. I don't know if you can run it given the way your computer is acting up, but if you can run it, you may get an error code which would point towards the cause of the problem.
Also, if you can, open Activity Monitor (in your Utilities folder in your Applications folder). Select "All Processes" at the top, and see if you have something running amok in the background that is hogging the CPU. This is something that would cause the fans to spin like crazy.
There is a "Flash Screen" option under the Hearing tab in Universal access, but I don't think that this is the problem here. You could check to see that it is turned off.
Since the problem persists even when booted from a disc, I suspect it is a hardware problem.
Do be sure you have an up to date backup before going in--there's a good chance your Mac will have to go off to be repaired.
    Good luck!

  • IPad and iTunes Freak Out!

Bought a new iMac in November and finally got around to backing up my iPad to it. All software is up to date on both, but when I plug my iPad into the computer it starts freaking out. On the iPad, a message pops up about trusing or not trusting the computer, however it flashes multiple times on the screen and I can't hit trust. Also, the battery icon flashes charging/not charging. Really, the whole screen keeps flashing. On the computer (screen shot attached) this pops up. I hit continue and then the second picture pops up. To top it off, once I unplug the iPad I literally had to click "Ok" in the second picture 37 times before it went away. I've owned three iPads and 4 or 5 Macs over the years and have never had something like this happen. I can't connect via wifi either. I have tried restarting the computer and iPad. I have not tried another lightning cable because I do not have one. The cable I have works fine if I plug it into the wall to charge it. Oh yeah, I also tried using all of the USB ports on the computer.
I'm running an iPad with Retina (Model MD511LL/A) wifi 32gb on iOS 7.0.4, a 27" iMac with OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 and iTunes 11.1.3
    Any ideas? Thanks!
I hit continue, and this comes up every time.
Notice how it says iPhone instead of iPad? I have to hit ok multiple times after I unplug the iPad. If I leave it plugged in, this does not go away.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.
Not normal. Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.

Please i dont know what to do now >.<

DId you try to jailbreak your phone? Evidently, the computer you're syncing with has been used to jailbreak, or attempt to jailbreak an iOS at some point and there is an entry in the host file that attempts to bypass Apple's authentication servers.
    Google is your friend.

  • Where did my iDisk go? I'm freaking out, here.

I just updated to Lion (which I wish I Knew would make my Photoshop and Office obsolete, by the way) and now my iDisk is gone, along with all of my files. I put all of my documents on there and I need them. Are they gone forever? I'm completely freaking out.

iCloud does not provide iDisk services. You will need to download your files from iDisk to your computer (through your Mobile Me account) then transfer them to some other online service of your choice such as SugarSync, ADrive, or MediaFire.

  • Wireless keyboard initially works with macbook pro, but then freaks out!

i just started using a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse with my 2-year old macbook pro, and while it all initially pairs up and works fine, after about 10 minutes weird things start happening.....like the tilda button seems to suddenly get stuck and repeats itself until i push it down, or my browser windows starts jumping to fill the screen. it still keeps working, but the freaking out on my screen gets worse.
i first unpaired first the keyboard and then the mouse to see which was causing the problem, and it seems to be the keyboard that's the culprit. the battery level seems to be fine, and as i said it seems to be paired correctly when i double check it under bluetooth in sys pref. also checked the keyboard viewer in sys pref and that seems to be working ok. i've done some searching on apple support and in discussions but can't find any similar situation. (also couldn't find a discussions category for keyboard, or would have posted this there)
i would greatly appreciate anyone's thoughts/suggestions on this!

I am having a similar problem with the wireless keyboard. Initially it will work, but then I'll come home and my computer speakers will be beeping because the wireless keyboard is trying to type something from across the room. Additionally, when I try to use my regular onboard keyboard when this happens, its impossible because the wireless keyboard is constantly typing something. My only way around this is to turn off wireless keyboard and only turn it on when I need it. Please post back with your results. Any ideas of how I can fix this?

  • When HP Envy is tilted audio freaks out

Hello! I have a HP Envy m6 Notebook PC (m6-n012dx) and I just got it a few days ago from best buy. Before I delve into my issues, I have updated all the drivers of the computer that it's telling me to.
So after I'm on it for awhile, and if I'm listening to music, the audio will freak out and start creating a kinda screeching noise. I thought this might be from overheating (as the laptop keeps getting pretty warm in a smaller amount of time than I think it should, even after updating drivers). It was doing that before I updated the drivers and the laptop was quite warm.
However today I was on it and the laptop was relatively cool and the audio still freaked out with the same noises. I don't know what to do.
This has happened three times with headphones and once without by the way, so it doesn't seem to be just my headphones or something. Also when it happens the computers performance seems to slow down; I usually just close the laptop for several minutes and then get back on and everything seems fine.
It might be worth noting too that I was playing a game, with all the game's audio turned off, with the music on. A friend suggested turning Beats Audio's multistreaming option off. I don't know if that will help or anything though.

http://goo.gl/FEXqpit's a weird to think of this, but try it out? it seemed to work for the guy who tried. (link at top of post)

  • OSX freaking out...keyboard accessing menus..apple menu duplicating options

This may be in the wrong forum, but this is really becoming an issue. What happens is from time to time one of our computer all of a sudden starts freaking out.
What happens is: Keyboard will no longer type. Instead it accesses file commands. For example, If I hit "i" it will get info. You can't type in any dialogue box or anything. All keys will try to access some shortcuts. It's not the keyboard that is the problem. I've tried multiple keyboards.
The apple menu will duplicate options. Like restart will show up twice etc..
Normally a restart would fix this problem, but it seems to be reoccuring more frequently, and the last time, I had to restart 4 times, repair disk permissions, and then zap the Pram twice before it would work again.
    Any insight would be great.
    Thanks

Sounds like something going on in your SystemPreferences>UniversalAccess settings.
Specifically, the 'duplicated' options in the Apple menu is normally associated with VoiceOver.

  • I AM FREAKING OUT RIGHTNOW I HATE MY FREAKING IPOD

i followed all the steps to put my songs on my ipod so that i could put them on to my new computer. then 1083 of my songs say tehres a problem with their files. but i didnt buy the songs or anything they're from CDs.
and i am freaking out right now because i dont want to put all the songs back on, it took forever to do it the first time

Songs that you ripped from a CD won't sync from an iPod back to a computer. It's not a flaw, it's the way it is. I suppose it's to prevent distribution of music. Anyway, there are quite a few programs that can help you accomplish your goal. I don't know whether you are using Mac or PC but for Mac there is a program called iPodRip and there are similar programs available for PC. Most are freeware or inexpensive shareware programs and the place I would recommend finding them is VersionTracker.com. Let us know how it goes.

  • Freak-out after system restoration

Hi everybody! This is my first post here, you all seem very helpful and I hope you can help me because I'm freaking out a little.
This summer, my hard drive and motherboard got fried and replaced. Happily, I had everything backed-up on an external hard drive, it was just geographically far from me. I just got back to it (about a month later), and successfully restored all my missing files and apps. The only catch is now I can't find anything I had saved during that month between hard drive replacement and restoration, including some pretty important photos. Is there somewhere I'm not looking? Or did I do something horribly wrong? Any help you can throw my way would be incredibly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Sara

Hey guys, thanks for the quick responses. I was out of town for the weekend, and now I'm back and freaking out less but still curious. To answer/clarify some points:
How did you backup your stuff to an external HDD?
Did you use a backup utility? If so, which?
I used Apple's "Backup" application, which I had to download again to access my info off of the hard drive.
Did you backup/clone the entire HDD, the Users Folder or individual files?
I backed up my users folder, a few applications I don't still have the installation disks for, and my Word, Photoshop, itunes, and iphoto library folders, I believe.
So, both the HDD and the logic board were replaced. Right? In other words, same computer, only >now with replaced logic board and HDD?
    Yep. Exactly.
successfully restored all my missing files and apps.
How? What method did you use?
I found basically the instructions how to do it in Backup Help, except for some probably critical information. It told me to click on the links below for restoring files to iphoto or itunes, except those links didn't exist anywhere.
In retrospect, I think I figured out what I did wrong. They give you two options, one involving replacing missing files and the other involving overwriting files. I took that to mean that if any duplicate files existed on both my computer and the hard drive, it would replace the existing ones with those from the hard drive. However, I think it really meant that it overwrote all of the information on my computer with the information being imported from the hard drive. If this is really what I did, can any of that information be retrieved?
OK, so after the HDD was replaced you were working on the computer and saved some photos on >it, is that right? Then, since you restored your backed up data you cannot find those photos and >other stuff you saved before restoring the old data, is that right?
Yep. That's this gist of it. I hope this info clarifies my possible boneheadedness. Thanks again for the help.
