Computer freeze / Memory problem?

Hi,
I assembled my new PC approx. 1 month ago (full spec attached at the bottom of the message).
Since then I'm having a lot of freezes (freeze, not BSOD). I tried using several OS versions with no luck, so I though it's a memory problem.
Testing the memory, each dimm by itself, with memtest86+ succeeded. I even tried to check each of the memory banks and the test still succeeded.
When testing with more than one dimm (both with single-channel and dual-channel configuration) I'm getting freezes during the check.
What could be the problem?
Thanks!
The full spec:
Case: Thermaltake Armor+ ESA VH6001BWS
PSU: Thermaltake ESA 850W
CPU: Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650
CPU Cooler: Thermaltake BigWater 780e ESA
Motherboard: MSI P7N2 Diamond (Bios version is 1.1, this also occurs at 1.0)
Memory: 4 x OCZ DDR3 PC3-12800 Platinum 2GB (OCZ3P16004GK), 8GB Total
Sound card: MSI X-Fi Xtreme Audio (the one that is bundled with the P7N2)
GPU: MSI GeForce 280 GTX OC
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate with SP1 - x64 edition
The system is not overclocked at all, All the bios settings are set to default.

OK, That's what I did:
Changed back the clock speed to auto (it was auto set back to 1333MHz), Changed the voltage of the memory and the NB back to "Auto".
Then I changed the memory to work as 9-9-9-24 and tested it with 2 dimms in a dual-channel configuration.
So far, It's looks like it's working and working well (2 passes completed successfully).

Assuming that the tests will go smooth, I would like to ask if this is a recommended configuration to stay with (1333MHz, voltages at "Auto", memory set to 9-9-9-24)?
Running those dimms not at overclocked & overvoltaged (and even in "lower speed" then it should) should prevent them from having short lifetime, Am I right?
Yes, because their DDR3 chips have been designed to work at 1333MHz with 9-9-9-24.
"Have been tested to work at 1600" is another fish in another (OCZ) ocean.
good luck

  • Mouse stops, computer freezes. this problem occurs with any mouse: bluetooth, wired, and a spare logitech wired mouse.  iMac 0S10.6.8

Help! Mouse stops, computer freezes. Restart helps for a while, then mouse doesn't respond. Problem occurs with my 4 "mice" - bluetooth, apple wireless, logitech wired & microsoft wired. Any solutions?

    Problem solved!
First, the underlying cause MAY have been an unusual circumstance: a smartphone (Galaxy Android) was placed next to the iMac, turned on and with Bluetooth enabled, and left for hours to charge.  Could this proximity have resulted in the Mac getting some strange Bluetooth input?
Fix:  Using the temporarily-installed mouse and keyboard, I removed the existing Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad entries. (I just removed every Bluetooth device.)  Then I used the standard procedure to re-pair the wireless keyboard and trackpad.
After removing all Bluetooth devices, I could not get the Mac to detect any Bluetooth devices until I restarted the Mac, at which point device detection and pairing worked flawlessly.
My best --and admittedly ignorant, sketchy-- theory:   Some mal-formed event got stuck in the Bluetooth input stream, causing the trackpad up and/or down states to be hyper-sticky.  That event couldn't be cleared without removing the originating device and re-pairing.

It has gotten quite annoying, so i'd really appreciate if someone got a clue!

just a guess, but maybe a udev problem? It looks like it is having problems creating input files, so that is probably the reason why it is freezing up. I'm not really sure how to fix this but maybe try using devfs and see if that fixes the problem to confirm that this is a udev problem (as long as you haven't installed the 2.6.13 kernel yet).
Sorry if I am not of more help.

  • My computer freezes when i try to restart from bootcamp. What's the problem?

I have a Macbook Pro (i think 2010 generation), that I had windows 7 installed on boot camp. Now I have Mac OS X Lion installed. I don't remember if I restarted from Windows 7 after installing Lion or not.
Now the problem is I want to restart from Windows 7. I can see it among the options when i restart, but when i click on it the computer freezes.
What is the problem and what could be the solution to it?
By the way I also have parallels 5 installed as well.

Does it happen with different iMovie projects or does it keep doing it with the same one? Might be a corrupt movie file.
Do you have iLife 11 on disc? If so you might try reinstalling iMovie and try it again, first without updating anything, and if that works then try updating and see if the problem comes back. It could also just be that iMovie is corrupt.

  • Powerbook G4 freezes on me - memory problems..?

    Hi all,
I have just bought a new Powerbook G4 15inch as i read all sorts of varying articles on Macbook Pro's teething problems with Adobe etc so decided to go for the tried and trusted good old Powerbook.
So i got the retailer to boost it from 512mg to 2gb in the shop and after giving it a good workout (installing Illustrator, photoshop, microsoft etc) and playing with Itunes i find that it freezes on me every 15mins or so..! I'm told it could be a memory problem (maybe the 2 new 1gbs are not compatible). Or should i reinstall Tiger..?
    Any advice is welcome.. help..!
    G4 powerbook 15inch   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   1.67GHZ 2gigabytes 100GB

    Hello, Shane,
No, I've not had trouble with freezes on my powerbook. I did have a little trouble clicking in the RAM on the top slot properly, both on my PB and on a friend's, but in these cases, the PB beeped three times on startup (RAM "distress signal").
It has been my understanding that system freezes are often caused by faulty hardware--RAM, a peripheral device that is misbehaving, or a more serious problem such as logic board.
Running the hardware test in extended mode would help with this.
Some people have reported that they have solved system freezes when all the hardware checks out by doing an archive/installation of their operating system, or erasing the drive and re-installing from scratch.
    Good luck.

I also would be remiss in not pointing out that since your Powerbook is new, Apple is available to help you troubleshoot, and in case there is a serious hardware issue, making an early report is advisable.

  • Cookies.sqlite folder is causing computer freezes/crashes. HD-problem ? Firefox-problem ? virus problem ? Solution ??

Hi, this is a bit complicated so please bear with me. Thank you.
Simply put my question is: What exactly is stored in "cookies.sqlite" ? I notice there are many cookies-files in my profile, such as "cookies.sqlite.bak", "cookies.sqlite-shm", "cookies.sqlite-wal" etc. What exactly gets lost if I delete "cookies sqlite" ? Can I even do that without hurting the rest of my profile ?
And could there be anything in this "cookies sqlite" folder that is causing Firefox not to run and my computer to freeze every time I try ?
Reason for asking: Not sure if I have a corrupted Firefox file, a hard drive problem or another problem.
Background info: The day before yesterday, my notebook (Lenovo, XP) was working fine. When I went to start it up yesterday, it did not boot properly. I tried a couple of times and eventually it worked. I tried to open Firefox which caused the computer to freeze. When I forced a shut-down and turned it back on, it ran checkdisk. It detected something, fixed it and started back up again. Explorer worked, so I went ahead and saved all my data manually. Then I wanted to save my Firefox profile as well and the computer froze. I started it back up, tried again and the same thing happened. I then tried again file-by-file. The file freezing my system turned out to be "cookies sqlite". I was able to copy all other files (including all other cookie-files). But when I touched "cookies.sqlite" (and we're talking copy and paste to an external HD) the machine froze. I tried the same thing through a Ubuntu live CD and again I was able to copy all of the profile except the cookies sqlite file. I tried doing an Acronis backup and there were some reading errors at the very end of the backup. I ran Lenovo's PC doctor that said that there is a hard drive problem. I ran chkdisk from the command line and the computer froze during chkdsk. I tried to see what on the computer was still working and it turned out that nearly everything was fine. I was able to start Opera and Thunderbird, burn DVDs etc. But when I tried Firefox again the computer froze. Every time it freezes and I force a shut-down and re-boot it, I get something different on chkdsk. Sometimes nothing (all is well), sometimes something is repaired or deleted at various stages of chkdsk. But apart from that the computer works just fine. Well, almost: The only other thing that causes problems is running a virus scan (with Avast anti-virus). Again the computer crashes towards the end of the check (similar to Avast) and I get a "kernel_stack_inpage_error" with a bunch of number codes. Running scans with anti-malware-tools (Malawarebytes, Superantispyware, Spybot) is fine and nothing is found.
So my question would be: is it possible that that cookies.sqlite file is somehow corrupted and is causing all these problems ? Or is it a malfunctioning hard-drive with an isolated problem in the area where this file is located ? What is the best way to find out ? (Given that I can neither run chkdsk from the command line, neither run an antivirus scan). What can I try to do about it ? What happens if I delete the "cookies.sqlite" - file and replace it with an older version ? Could that solve the problem ? Or will it cause even more ? And is there any chance to save the data from that cookies.sqlite-file ? Safe mode does not work (same thing: computer freezes), neither does Ubuntu live CD.
Oh, and the hard drive is a Hitachi Travelstar which is about 3 years old, so it should still have lots of life left.
    Thanks a million!
    eLeo

  • Memory Problems with Adobe PDF iFilter for 64-bit

In preparation to rebuild my Windows Search Index, I installed the Adobe PDF iFilter for 64-bit on my system (Vista Business 64).  When I finally rebuilt the index, I wasn't too surprised by what I saw happen, namely, the SearchFilter.exe process would kick in whenever I wasn't using the system and just eat RAM.  One time I turned it on and it had allocated over 4,000 MB (and my system only has 4,030 MB available) so of course it was forcing all the other processes to hard fault (ie. everything was moving like molasses--for example, it took 20 minutes to put the thing to sleep).  But I just let it do it's work, figuring that perhaps this was to be expected relative to the small library of PDF's that I've accumulated on my computer, ranging from LaTeX generated text files, to containers for hi-res scans.  So, after a day and a half of basically not using my laptop, everything finally calmed down and I enjoyed the benefits of searching the content of my library from the Windows Start menu--for a short while.
However, to my dismay I've encountered the problem that this freezing of my computer would now occur after everytime I download a new PDF (in this particular case they were Google Books scans) and then left the computer to idle.  Again, the SearchFilter.exe would allocate all of my RAM for itself and just push everything else onto the Virtual RAM, which means the SLOWEST possibly fetching you can get.  I had to uninstall as this was making my computer unusable for 15-30 minutes after each idle. Everything is back in working order without the iFilter, but I would like to know if anyone has reported such problems on x64 systems.  Obviously, I will also report the problem to Microsoft, since the search engine should certainly have the precaution to handle such memory problems.   However, it is a problem that is created by the Adobe PDF iFilter interacting with the Windows Search engine.

    Hello,
We believe we have figured this out.  It looks like it has to do with the length of the default folder location for the Adobe iFilter.
I was able to reproduce the issue and the following resolved it for me.  See if this resolves it for you all as well.
Here is how to get Adobe Version 11 PDF filter to work.
1 . If you haven’t already, run the following in SQL Server:
    Sp_fulltext_service ‘Load_os_resources’, 1
    Go
--you might also need to run:
sp_fulltext_service ‘Verify_signature’,0  --This is used to validate trusted iFilters. 0 disables it. So use with caution.
    --go
    2. Stop SQL Server.  (Make sure FDHost.exe stops)
    3.
Uninstall the Adobe ifilter (because it defaulted to having spaces or the folder name is too long).
    4.
Reinstall the Adobe iFilter and when it prompts for where to install it, change it to: C:\Program Files\Adobe\PDFiFilter
    5.  Once the installation finishes, go the computer’s Environment variables. Add the following to the PATH.
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\PDFiFilter\BIN
NOTE: it must include the BIN folder
NOTE: If you had the OLD location that included spaces, remove it from the path environment variable.
    6. Start SQL Server
    7.  IF you had an existing Full-text index on PDFs, drop the full-text index and recreate it.
    8. You should now get results when you run sys.dm_fts_index_keywords('db','tblname')  --Note: Change db to be the actual database name and tblname to be the actual table name.
Give this a try and see if this fixes yours.
    Sincerely,
    Rob Beene, MSFT

Graphics Card - EVGA - NVIDIA GeForce GTX480 - DirectX11 - CUDA - OpenCL Support - PhysX Technology - OpenGL 4.1 (so says the box it came in; but if I'm not mistaken I think the command prompt had shown OpenGL 3 or 3.2)
Disc Driver - LG DVD/CD RW... It is an OEM, Windows claims it is updated.
I use an external component - USB Microsoft Wireless Mouse & Keyboard 2000.
I have, as far as software goes...
    Windows 7 64-bit SP1
Adobe Creative Suite 5, student version or what have you.
         - I do have several plugins installed as well for After Effects only.
    Autodesk 3ds Max 2012
-I have several maxscripts as well as a couple plugins for 3ds Max.
    UDK 2-2012 & 3-2012
    NVIDIA PhysX Lab 1.1
    NVIDIA Texture Tools 2
    NVIDIA plugin for Photoshop
    xNormal
    ConTEXT
    UnCodeX
    Quicktime
    AVG Free
    Malwarebytes
    7-Zip
    Java
    Sculptris
As for anything else giving me issues I haven't noticed anything besides a previous Graphics Card wasn't supported very well at all with 3ds Max, it would freeze while using the material editor which was fixed with replacing a GTX550 ti with a more compatible GTX480. Thought maybe the upgrade would also solve the fact that almost everytime I go to start up and/or use After Effects or Premiere Pro CS5 my whole system freezes. Whether or not I'm doing anything, it occasionally happened during "Scrubbing" the timeline, but also during the splash load up screen. Would take the time to wait for several minutes but nothing would change. Hard reboot was needed. After countless hours of searching online I stumbled upon what is called an "Unlock" for Premiere Pro/After Effects to allow accelerated GPU and CUDA cores. Simple procedure, seems as if things go faster... When it is working. But still, I encounter freezes on my entire system. It isn't a crash back to Windows or anytihng. Just a complete freeze on the entire system. I have not extensively used other Adobe programs besides Photoshop quite briefly just so I could open menus and force a freeze within 5 minutes and noticed nothing wrong. Which in AE & PP just running through any of the menu windows can quickly cause a sudden freeze.
note* I have alternated shutting off and turning on OpenGL as well as multiprocessing. Doesn't matter, it really doesn't seem to change much of anything.
Alas, I am absolutely sure, after checking and re-checking 80+ hours over the past 2 weeks that yes, everything is updated as far as each individual program, software or hardware will allow me to update them. I have reinstalled Windows as well as each program up to 3 times, and 1 system (restore?) I had Windows dump everything, started from scratch, backed up nothing. To reinstall everything from scratch, while not installed several "Utilities" or software components from stuff like the Motherboard and its XFAST USB/LAN or whatever, thinking maybe it was cluttering up anything.
Please, if anyone has any ideas upon this and could give me advice, whether you notice any other incompatibilities or anything. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
note* I do not have a wired Keyboard or mouse to disable the USB plugin and attempt that route.. at least not yet, its on my list of things to do. Also, I did run Memtest86+ during a boot and it claims that everything there had passed 100%. I am not "overclocking" anything either. I just wanted something I could work smoothly on, that would have decent rendering capabilities. I used to use my girls' laptop which was an HP with 3GB RAM and never experienced crashes or freezes and I could use AE, PPro, 3ds Max with some lag but not any issues. Rendering took forever on it, but I usually avoided that 'cuz it would start heating up pretty fierce. Saved my rendering for school computers where I could. But either way, now I have this expensive piece and it is getting frustrating that I cannot work on it.
note* Also, incase it does help, I have Windows as well as any major components installed onto the C: drive (aka SSD for my system) while all my secondary software, such as Adobe, Autodesk, etc. are all installed directly to my D: drive (or HDD) And everything is set up to go through Windows Firewall as well.

Thanks all. I have just tried a few things, installing them onto the C drive as you all specified as not being one of them. I can understand it, but at the same time i have a classmate who has their software on a seperate drive and it runs smoothe. I'm on my second GPU in 2 weeks, unless I have terrible luck it seems doubtful being that I can run games and a majority of the software no problem. Through further testing around with a corded mouse and keyboard I've noticed the following...
The computer freezes entirely only when I'm performing a "scrubbing" action or using a mouse. Left clicking, scrolling, or moving it around. Otherwise if I do not use the mouse and I make all my actions, such as "scrubbing" in AE via "Page Up & Down" keys, there's no freeze and it preloads the preview no problem.
"Scrubbing" does not load a preview (the green bar doesn't load at all while scrubbing). But, also noticed no matter how smoothe everything is running in 3ds Max as well as PPro, once I start performing a "scrubbing" action with whatever timeline I use, it will definately freeze my whole computer, Windows and all. Hard reboot is neeed.
With having gone through 2 GPU's, done a full memtest via Windows 7 and Memtest86+, there seems to be no issue with my memory or GPU. Like I said, I've run UDK without an issue. Whether the editor or game. The USB doesn't seem like it's the cause, I've used both wireless as well as wired keyboards/mouse. Still freezes, but now only when using a mouse to "Scrub".
Is it possible my motherboard could be incompatible somewhere? I mean, really.. everything is brand new but 2 weeks of troubleshooting.
And I do plan on trying to run my software off the C drive, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something else, like I said, I've seen and used a computer where it all runs off the D drive and it runs perfectly, actually better on his computer than off the C drive at my schools. So if it is an issue would it lie within the fact that I'm using an Nvidia GPU? Considering my classmate is using a AMD/ATI Radeon or something like that.
Again, to those who replied, your shared knowledge is greatly appreciated, thank you.

  • Computer Freezes and mouse pad commands freeze

Within minutes after bootup, my computer freezes. When I click with mouse on item, it will drag it across screen without that being a command. When clicking to request process, it stalls. I can use esc to get out of request with some success and have to keep trying again.  Basically...it freezes up and won't move forward or backward and the only way nor follow command prompts. I have used ESC upon bootup and followed promps for bios and tune-up. Errors generated are: Memory Test: Failed Failure ID: 9GBW1L-5RL7N7-QFPH4K-406603; with Tune-Up: 9GBQ1L-5RL7N8-QFRH4K-401N03 I'm used the f10 function to rerun Bios...it said successful. Bios DAte 1/25/2013  Thank you in advance for your help!

You said that Apple ran all updates? Your profile show 10.5.4 I assume you just have not updated this or are you still running 10.5.4?
What exactly are you doing when the Macbook freezes?
Are you on any particular application?
Does it matter what applications you are using?
Do you get the spinning beach ball first before the Macbook freezes?
Have you upgraded the memory since purchasing the Macbook from Apple?
Did this problem start before or after the updates that the Apple techs performed?
Lots of questions but each one can help us help you...

  • HT3918 I upgraded to 16 mb of ram and after 10 minutes my computer freezes, and ideas?

I upgraded to 16 mb of ram and after 10 minutes my computer freezes, and ideas?  I have an imac mid 2011 21 inch.

Cause and effect points to out-of-spec memory.
Run Apple Hardware Test. Run the extended tests.
      Using Apple Hardware Test
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
If it fails the memory tests, remove the memory and re-seat it. The sockets are very "tight". Run AHT again.
If it still fails, replace your original memory. If it works, you found the problem. Buy Mac memory from Crucial or OWC / MacSales.

  • Just installed new OS, computer freezing... HELP!!

    Hey all,
So as I've been posting between here and the Panther forums recently, I belatedly upgraded my OS over the few days from the last version of Panther to the last one of Tiger, and now I've been having a frequent problem with the computer freezing.
Granted, I've had this computer crash on me before; sometimes it's with that Glazed-over grey screen & telling you that to hold down the Power button to restart it, sometimes, the mouse icon will just FREEZE up, and I'll also have to hold down the Power button. That latter type is the more common one, and though it may happen every few weeks or so, just today alone, I've had it freeze up on me FOUR TIMES. Even now, I used my old Panther boot partition--which I'd cloned to my external firewire drive--to boot up from and write this.
So I'm lead to believe it's either some problem with the new OS, or the computer itself. The thing is, this is a previously used G4, one I'd inherited from my brother, who said that it used to crash on him almost daily. He suspected it was because of either a problem with
    A) the internal drive (the drive IS a 111.8 GB one, which seems a bit unusual for a boot drive; my old G4 came with a 20GB one, I haven't heard of many pre-installed internal drives being 100 GBs, though I could be wrong), or
    B) 3rd party RAM that he'd had installed when he bought it, which perhaps wasn't quite as good as Mac-made RAM.
Anyway when I took it over, I made sure to reformat and zero-out the hard drive, and didn't seem to have AS many problems. However, obviously if I've upgraded to a higher OS--which of course would cause more wear on the computer--if the RAM was at all compromised before, then that would DEFINITELY be I'm having an issue now.
I verified and repaired ALL partitions before I installed this--on the 2 partitions of the internal, and my external--and they seemed to come up okay. I'm just like to try trouble-shooting--whether I need to run some tests, or make sense of the Crash Log(s)--on what could not only CONTINUE to be causing to this computer to crash, but have made it worse.
Admittedly I'm a computer noob, so I'm hardly the most knowledgeable person when it comes to detecting problems. Thing is, I really hope that this computer can tide me over until I upgrade to a newer PowerBook or iMac within the year, and was even going to try installing and learning some new design programs in the meantime. However, I don't want to get too comfortable with it--****, I CAN'T--or waste my time and money installing a software or a new RAM or an internal drive if there's no hope to salvage this thing.
    PLEASE help! Thanks.

Nope, it'd just been the 1 "loop" (what does that even MEAN, by the way?) that had been the default when you first download and use Rember. Again, I even shut down both the display and computer "sleep" features in Energy Saver, and it ended up taking 4525 seconds, or 75 minutes.
Although "all tests passed," should I consider such a lengthy test-time as a red flag? Why would it be taking so long for such a test??
So assuming the RAM in question IS actually okay, I guess the next question is whether the computer freezing (which happened AGAIN, right before I was going to post this; Firefox was one of the only programs I had running) is due to:
    A) Problems with the internal/boot drive itself (again, it IS an 111 GB drive on a G4 a used G4, I'm not sure if that's a standard factory-issue drive, and the family member who passed this computer off to me doesn't remember either). If you know of any OTHER ways to test it to make sure it's not compromised or failing (since it already seemed to come up okay on Disk Utility), I'd appreciate it.
    B) Problems with the Tiger OS itself. Although the installation of it went all right, the computer DID freeze while I was doing the upgrade from 10.4 to the 10.4.11 package in Software Upgrade afterwards, so maybe that's somehow compromised the entire OS. So if there's any way to DOWNGRADE to 10.4.1, and REDO the packaged upgrade, let me know.
    C) Possibility that I should still increase my RAM either way. Again, of the 4 slots, I have 2 512-pieces, 1 256, and 1 empty. So I COULD upgrade add another to the empty slot, or increase the 256 to a 512, or both. If you know of any reputable places online or elsewhere where I can buy compatible RAM for this G4, I'm all ears. I DO have some RAM on my own OLDER 2000-model G4, assuming it's even compatible (I'm sorry to say I don't know that much about RAM, never having purchased any on my own).
Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Computer freezes while checking NVRAM

my keyboard doesn't work after the computer boots up. It's like my computer freezes right after it boots and where it asks if u wanna enter the set up screen or logo screen. If I press the tab button rapidly while the computer starts up, it goes to the logo screen and then freezes. On the boot up screen it displays my memory size correctly, my clockspeed incorrectly (1250mhz instead of the correct value), and the DRAM clock = 200, SDRAM CAS Latency = 2.   It displays "CHECKING NVRAM" and freezes there.

Your problem is one of the most common one - either CPU heatsink installation, PSU underpowered or RAM. The resolutions were addressed in the thread above.
