Computer freeze when updating from OS 9.2 to 10.2

Hi,
I have a grey/blue ibook 366Mhz purchased the summer of 2000. I'm trying to update to OS 10.2. So far, I've updated from 9.06 to 9.2.1 to 9.2.2 (the required sequence), updated the firmware to 4.1.7, and installed third party RAM. I bought the install discs (10.2)from ebay. They are white colored and should work, according to the help files, although the seller did not send me the third "tools" disk.
When I try to install 10.2, the computer freezes at startup. A grey screen with the apple logo appears, and then the screen freezes and splits.
The point of this upgrade is to use our Verizon internet service, which requires OS X. If there's a way around that requirement, it would be just as good.
Does this sound familiar to anyone. Thanks for any help you can offer,
Andrew

Andrew:
You apparently have an Upgrade Version, which requires that you have the previous version installed on the HDD. What you need is the Full Retail Version. Check the picture of the disks posted by ali brown by clicking here However, instead of upgrading to Jaguar, since you have to purchase new install disks anyway, I suggest that you consider upgrading to Panther, which is a lot more powerful and stable OS. Your computer will easily support Panther if it meets that other the minimum system requirements for Panther.
Panther is no longer available directly from Apple, but you can find the Full Retail Version of Panther, if you shop carefully, at online outlets like FastMac; HardcoreMac, AllMac etc. If you know what you are looking for, read all documentation carefully and ask questions of the seller, you may be able to get
Panther on eBay.
I will probably contact the ebay seller, since he gave the impression that he was selling the full retail version.
I definitely think you should do so.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
Cheers

  • Why does my computer freeze when updateing if i have enough disk space and no disk repairs are needed?

I have problems updating my softwarebecause my computer freezes when it restarts to install. I have enough disk space and I checked for disk repairs and everthing is ok. Still can't update and not my cumputer is taking longer to turn on. There is an earth blinking then i get the apple logo blinking before it turns on and this takes close to 5 minutes.

When you say, "disk repairs" are you referiring to permissions or verifying the disk because clearly there's a problem.
Boot from your install disc, run Disk Utilty to "verify" and if necessary repair the startup disk. (Not Verify Disk Permissions).

  • Computer Freezes When Booting From Firewire HDD

I was trying to boot from my firewire drive, so that I could use CCC and restore the internal drive. After using CCC to back up the internal drive, and then getting the computer to boot from the firewire drive, boot-up froze when it got to the blue screen (after the Apple logo). The mouse was functioning, but that was it. Can anyone suggest anything?
The Firewire drive is a WD MyBook Home Edition. I've JUST updated the firmware, but I haven't tried again yet. I've also heard about the GUID option, but I can't remember if I turned that on or not. Also: The disk contains data which can't be moved or deleted, so re-partitioning the drive is out.
If booting doesn't work, can I use CCC to clone a disk image, boot from the Leopard DVD, and restore the internal drive using the cloned image with Disk Utility?

You can't change the partition scheme to GUID without erasing, but [this article|http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20071129085410333] in MacFixit contains the following:
"although a PowerPC Mac will not boot from a GUID-partitioned disk (the "native" partitioning for an Intel Mac boot disk), an Intel Mac will boot from an APM-partitioned disk (the "native" partitioning for a PPC boot disk)"
I've seen similar discussions elsewhere as well. My retail Leopard install DVD, bootable on both PPC and Intel Macs, has an APM partition scheme. An Intel Mac will not INSTALL OS X onto an APM-partioned disk, but that is not the same thing. I think that a CCC clone of an Intel-bootable volume onto a disk with an APM partition scheme should still be bootable. I would check further at the [CCC forum|http://forums.bombich.com/viewforum.php?f=12] for confirmation; if so, your problem is elsewhere.
You said the disk contains data which can't be moved - did you create the clone on the same volume that contained this data or did you have a different partition on the drive that you could erase first? If the "data that can't be moved or deleted" on the external drive is not itself backed up somewhere else, it should be.
Would backing up to an disk image, and restoring using the Leopard Install DVD work? This is primarily to defragment my disk, as Boot Camp won't run without contiguous disk space.
I think this should work but is risky because you can't boot the disk-image to test it beforehand to be sure it is OK. And if it is not OK, you won't find out until after the restore has failed on your now-erased internal HD.

  • OS X Server 3.0.1 freezing when updating from previous version

When I try to open server after upgrading to 3.0.1 the window cames up saying Server is being updated on this mac, but after 3 hoursi  is still stuck (SEE SCREENSHOT BELOW) I have rebooted but still TNA.
    Anyone have a clue?
    Thanks

Microsoft Outlook has been a longstanding issue with this behavior.
As for changing the settings, here's how I usually do this.   The postconf -e command shown over in that earlier thread will likely require tweaking as Mavericks has moved the configuration file.   You'll need to add the -c switch with the current configuration file location to the postconf command, as Server.app has stashed away its own copy of this file.
    sudo postconf -n -c /Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix
    sudo postconf -c /Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix -e "smtpd_helo_restrictions = permit_sasl_authenticated reject_invalid_helo_hostname reject_non_fqdn_helo_hostname"
Which will allow (only) authenticated users to bypass the HELO checks.  What's shown here also differs from that earlier thread as I'm not allowing unauthenticated local access here.  Then restart the Postfix server with:
    sudo postfix reload
I'll report that article to the  hosts.

  • ITunes and Computer freezes when ipod is connected

When I connect my video ipod to my computer (dell desktop) the system freezes, as in it will not respond to mouse clicks and keyboard (but can still get to task manager). When I unplug the ipod it comes back to life. Programs always freeze, but sometimes I am able to navigate within windows without it freezing, but as soon as a program is brought up, my computer falls to its knees.
I have the latest version of iTunes, and updater v. 1.1, (but I have not been able to update the firmware yet from v 1.0).
The odd thing is last night I was able to download several gigs worth of music to it without incident. I then tried to load movies (they were in the wrong format, but I didn't know it at the time), and so in an effort to correct that I uninstalled itunes, the ipod drivers, and the ipod updater programs several times.
I cannot update the ipod firmware because the computer freezes when the ipod is plugged in, so the program freezes as well. Kind of a catch 22 situation.
I have been over the forums and help archives for about an hour and a half now and I have come up dry.
Windows XP does recognize the ipod when the cable is connected, and the ipod flashes, "Do not disconnect", which it is supposed to do.
I suspect this is drivers/software, but I have no idea where to go from here.
    Help?

    Hey!
That EXACT thing happened to me! 2 nights ago I'm downloading like crazy, all is well. I got on LimeWire and downloaded some videos and tried to put them on my iPod. Imported them into iTunes then tried to put em on my iPod and it completely wiped out all my songs! So I get back on, put the songs back in, and about half way through the update the thing freezes. I've re-installed everything, and have reset my iPod. Did you figure out what to do? Maybe your fix will fix my problem, too.
    Thank you!

  • Mail freezes when updating large RSS feed boxes

This is something I encountered and how I have formulated a work around. I have discovered that Mail will freeze when updating large RSS feed boxes.
A little history. After discovery RSS and how they work, I began building a collection of feeds. They included feeds from many major news providers. Over the years, the number articles form some of these sources went into the thousands.
As my database of articles grew, I encountered more severe and more frequent freezes of the application Mail. I began to take the computer off-line in order to work in these files. But inevitably, a situation would arise that would lead to the Mail application freezing.
Isolation of the issue with Mail and to the RSS boxes within Mail. The freeze would not occur when RSS feeds boxes where collapsed. Also, the freeze only affected the Mail application. Mac OS was not affected and I was able to alway close Mail from with in the Force Quit menu. Also, the Force Quit menu affirmed that Mail was indeed frozen by listing it as also "not responding."
Work around. To resolve this issue, I first choose to remove the number of RSS feed that I had subscribed to but used very infrequently. Second, I choose to delete old feeds from "never" to "every two weeks" from within the Mail preference menu (RSS sub-menu).
I think it took a while for Mail to fully delete messages older than two weeks. In fact, when I began deleting whole feeds, it took some time for those feeds to be removed from my mail box tree. Within the Activity Monitor application, I could see that a lot of disk use was occurring, even though the OS was allowing me to continue to use Mail and other applications.
To assist this process, I took my computer off-line and stepped away from it. Upon my return, the disk use was down to normal, the number of article in many RSS boxes where greatly reduced, and my disk had recovered over a GB of space. Also, Mail seems to be behaving properly, with smooth and quick performance.
If you found this article, I hope the information provided has been helpful! After a quick search in to previous posts, an entirely similar post was not found. However, others are finding the Mail application will freeze, but not necessary for the same reason.

Since I don't want to download any attachments from RSS feeds in Mail.app, is there any way to turn off the attachment download once and for all? I also get the beach ball for minutes when an item has a big attachment, and I fear my HD is cluttered with files I don't use.

  • Computer freezes while reading from serial port

My computer freezes when i tried to read from a serial port for a longer period of time such as 10 hours. I always close the serial port after reading. please, help me solve this problem

I too experienced a similar problem twice on my machine and I have no idea how to stop it because it is so intermittent and I cannot replicate it.
Perhaps I can offer some clues.
The Labview screen cannot be stopped and some parts of Windows appears frozen. Oddly enough I can switch to the block diagram but thats about all I can do. The LV stop button will indicate a mouse click on it but the VI does not stop. iT also cannot be closed.
Even the reset button and power button on the PC does not work. I am forced to power down the PC (pull the plug) to get back control.
I believe it is related to a visa call to my serial Balance.
ANyway no solution but hopefully some clues.

Using Outlook 2007 I want to receive emails on my iPhone 4 only when Outlook is NOT open on my computer, as when away from home or want to quickly check email when computer is not turned on. Either ALL emails come to my iPhone or none at all. Is the setting I need to change in Outlook or on the iPhone or is it somewhere else?  I used to have this setting but transferring Outlook to a new laptop somehow turned it off.

No. You really can't do that. Not easily at any rate. You would have to set them both up to use POP3, but even then there is no way to guarantee that the phone won't poll the server prior to your computer doing so, pulling down the message from the server.

I synced my phone to my computer. When updated with iOS7.0.2 I lost all my contacts, photos and music. I lost everything? How can i get them back? Is there any backup?

Everything should be on your computer.
You should be syncing contacts and calendars with your comptuer regularly.
You should be transferring all itunes purchases to your computer regularly.
You should be importing all pics taken with iphone to your computer regularly.
    Most especially before any update.
Have you failed to do this?

  • My computer freezes when using Facebook.

  • My computer freezes when i try to restart from bootcamp. What's the problem?

I have a Macbook Pro (i think 2010 generation), that I had windows 7 installed on boot camp. Now I have Mac OS X Lion installed. I don't remember if I restarted from Windows 7 after installing Lion or not.
Now the problem is I want to restart from Windows 7. I can see it among the options when i restart, but when i click on it the computer freezes.
What is the problem and what could be the solution to it?
By the way I also have parallels 5 installed as well.

Does it happen with different iMovie projects or does it keep doing it with the same one? Might be a corrupt movie file.
Do you have iLife 11 on disc? If so you might try reinstalling iMovie and try it again, first without updating anything, and if that works then try updating and see if the problem comes back. It could also just be that iMovie is corrupt.
