Computer freezes after RAM increase

I have a Compaq desktop with this motherboard MCP61PM-HM rev 2.2 running windows 7.
Made a memory increase from 2GB to 8GB with 4 compatible memmory sticks. Computer launches windows but then freezes. I can see it recognises the 4 memmory sticks and it keeps working in safe mode but not in normal mode.
Tried the different sticks, they all seem ok and work well until 3 (6Gb); when I add the 4th one (8Gb) it crashes again.
What should I do? thanks

Yes!! you are correct
This unit should support upto 8GB Memory Module and you can confirm the same by looking into the below shown link.
I am not sure why it is not working

    Hi Teodorafrombc,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your computer is becoming unresponsive, you may want to see if specific applications are causing this behavior. Try using the Force Quit menu to check for unresponsive applications:
Using the Force Quit feature of OS X makes an application close, even when it is not responsive.
Important: Normally you should not need to force quit an app to close it. When an app is forced to quit, any unsaved changes to open documents are not saved, so try these methods to normally close the app first:
Choose Quit from the app menu. For example, in Safari, choose Safari > Quit Safari.
Choose Quit by right-clicking or control-clicking on an app's icon in the Dock
You can find the article with these steps here:
OS X: How to quit an unresponsive application using Force Quit
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3411
If your display is going blank or seems to be going to sleep unexpectedly, try these steps first:
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
You can find the article with these steps and more information here:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays

If these steps don't resolve the issue, feel free to reply with more information about the symptoms you are experiencing.
    Best,
    Jeremy

  • Computer freezes after going into sleep mode

My computer freezes after being left idle and I am prompted to restart. I have the screen saver set to view the nature pictures, but that doesn't show. The screen goes blank and then I have to restart. I've read about sleep problems, but not a solution. Have any? Thanks! ~M

    Hello Dean,
Yes, the restart prompt looks like the kernel panic alert screen. And I did accesss the panic.log and it doesn't mean much to me! Here is what I copied from the two crashes today:

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • I attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded, now computer freezes after trying to load everything.  possible to reverse this?  options?  restore hd from time machine?  pls help!!!

long story short...i attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded to my desktop and now my computer freezes up after trying to load everything, and i'm not able to just drag the photos into the folder.  is it possible to reverse this?  what are my options?  restore hd from time machine?
a further question to restoring my hd from a previous backup on time machine...it says it will erase the hd.  does it actually erase everything or does it just erase anything that may have been added or downloaded since that backup?  this is confusing to me.
another problem which is part of the original problem is it seems that when i connect my iphone to my computer and iphoto uploads my pics...it doesn't just upload new ones, it duplicates and uploads every picture again...which is why i have 45,000 pics...they are 40,000 duplicates!  what's up with that?
I have a macbook pro, and recently updated the os to Yosemite.  the iphoto app is out of date, but i'll worry about that once i can figure out how to get all those pics off the desktop.  also, i recently purchased and installed 8g of new ram, but that hasn't seemed to help.
    any advice would be appreciated!
    thanks!!

    thanks for replying.
the booting and walking away and then attempting to browse and clean method is what i've been trying to do.  it won't let me drag and drop and just freezes up and goes to sleep after 2 minutes.  it's a never ending battle with very few results. which is why i questioned the method of just restoring the hd from a time machine backup.
do you think restoring the hd from time machine will resolve the issue with all pics on the desktop?  and everything will be as it was from the date i restore it from?  sorry, as you can tell, i'm not overly computer savvy.
i have a really old desktop mac...i can try connecting the two...how does one boot a mac in 'target mode'?
as for the iphoto cleaning and organizing issue...that is what i was trying to accomplish with importing them to a folder.  was going to browse and clean from there...but somehow imported to desktop which is what's complicating everything.  once i get them off the desktop i can work on the iphoto issue...which as i mentioned...i didn't take 45,000 pics...i've just taken about 4,500 over the last few years, and they are being duplicated in iphoto.  this was my attempt to clean it out entirely and start over.  it will basically be a lot of deleting.
one problem, seems to lead me to more...which is just my luck.  :-)
    thanks again, for your help.

  • Computer freezes after Post (Cannot load/re-install windows)

    Hi!
I have the K8T Neo-FIS2R motherboard 1.7 bios with an AMD Athlon 64 3000+  The computer loads up correctly, sees all of the memory, both CD rom drives, and both hard drives.  However, after the post my computer goes to the Load win XP in safe mode etc. and the computer freezes right there.  Also, when i try to reinstall windows XP, I just get past the boot from CD option and when it says setup is examining system hardware, it freezes at this screen and will not go any further; also when it does this, my numlock key blinks for some reason.  Any answers???

  • G31M Freezing After RAM Check, Says 1596fsb which might be problem..

    Hello....
Putting together a Dual core duo with a MSI G31M mobo. It keeps resetting itself.. wont even show post.. all i here is one tiny, quick (not loud) beeping. and if it hit DEL or TAB... it will show the corresponding screen, but just frozen.
The insert button thing isnt working either (yes i did total power removal).
It says on the top of the POST screen "Speed: 1596 mhz" which might be the problem...
It freezes after "Init USB controllers: OK | 1015mb..." then it stops..
    Thanks everybody...

    Hi,
your BIOS Version is too old to properly support your E7400.  That is why the CPU Frequency only shows as "1596 mhz" and that is also why the system does this:

It freezes after "Init USB controllers: OK | 1015mb..." then it stops..
There are three possible solutions to solve the situation:
    1) Install a processor supported by BIOS Version 7.1 to be able to properly turn on your system and then update the BIOS to the latest Version to be able to use your E7400 (update should be done from DOS only).
    2) Ask in a local computer shop or contact your reseller to do the same thing for you.
    3) Connect an internal floppy drive and a PS/2 Keyboard and then try to force the system into AMI BIOS Recovery Mode.  Instructions:
    Quote
Rename the desired AMI BIOS file to AMIBOOT.ROM and save it on a floppy disk. e.g. Rename A569MS23.ROM to AMIBOOT.ROM
Insert this floppy disk in the floppy drive. Turn On the system and press and hold Ctrl-Home to force update. It will read the AMIBOOT.ROM file and recover the BIOS from the A drive.
When 4 beeps are heard you may remove the floppy disk and restart the computer.
Even though the AMI BIOS Recovery Procedure is the only chance you have to solve the situation without installing a different processor, it does not work in all cases.  However, as it is an easy procedure, it is at least worth a try.

  • Computer freezes after idle after installing yosemite

I would like to know if there is a way to uninstall yosemite and go back to mountain lion, everytime I come back from idle my mini mac freezes and I have to constantly restart my mini mac to get it to work

You can downgrade by repartitioning the drive, then reinstalling Mountain Lion from your backup made prior to installing Yosemite. If you have no backup then you can use Internet Recovery if your hardware supports it: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery.
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.
If your model does not support the above, then you must install Snow Leopard:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. You can then upgrade to Mountain Lion provided you have a Mountain Lion installer.

  • Computer freezes after connecting zen mi

I formated my computer about a week ago and I didn't connect my micro to computer since then.
But today I install everything that is on CD that came with zen micro and when I plug USB cable ito micro the computer freezes. And I mean FREEZES, I have to reset it because the mouse and anything else is not working.
I've tried it on another computer and it was recognized without problems. So the problem is in my computer.
I have .02.05 firmware on the player.
    Did anyone have this problem?

A freezing PC suggests a serious hardware and/or software problem. As it works on another PC obviously the Micro isn't directly at fault, although it could be a USB incompatibility with this PC. USB incompatibilities are always a pain to diagnose, so if you don't mind spending a little extra money you might find a PCI USB card a quick solution. Make sure to get a known good card i.e. Belkin or Adaptec.
Failing this, and if you don't want to get a PCI USB card just yet, there's lots of connection troubleshooting advice here in the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net.

  • Explorer and Computer freezes after installation of Creative Cloud

First I had a hard time installing the programs, because the downloads always froze and I had to do it over and over. From the first start of the adobe application manager my computer were stopping, froze in and did not shut down anymore. And I have trouble using the internet, because my explorer is freezing all the time, too. Than I have to restart the whole system, until it freezes again. And the Computer as always been resetted the hard way, what brings up the Windows "the computer did not shut down..." screen and is really anoying.
System HP with 10 Gigs Memory, Intel I7 quad processor, 3600 mhz, Windows 7, NVIDIA 620

No issus with Win 7 before, no error messages.  The computer starts normal, stays normal, as long as I do not use one of the Adobe products. I can start all programs, work with the programs, go into the internet, shut it down normal. As soon as I work with a application from adobe, I can use the programs, work with them , but as soon, as I try to go to the internet, i get no connection. Shutting down does not work, the computer freezes on the "shutting down" screen. Disconect power, start again, I can find no other reason than the Adobe Application manager, but creative cloud needs this thing on to work. As long as this thing is not in use, every thing is normal. I was trying ti re-install , but it did not change. The manager also keeps to "forget" my Adobe ID and is asking for it over and over.

  • Computer freezes after installing new updates

I installed new updates and went to restart the computer, the apple logo came on and the progress bar went a third across then locked up with the curser spinning. Each time I try to restart the same thing happens. I can only restart in safe mode, can anyone help me with this problem.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Computer Crashes after Ram upgrade

I have a new powerbook (serial # W8544xxxxxx) with the new video card, screen resolution, etc. The system came with 512mb DDR2 ram, and I recently bought another stick of 512 at Newegg.
Now it recognizes it in the system fine, but the computer seems to crash when the computer heats up. When I run processor intensive applications, it will either just freeze or freeze and slowly turn the entire screen white. This happened right after I installed the Ram, never had a problem before.
Is this another part of the lower memory slot problems I've been hearing about?
This is the ram I bought : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227106
The ram works great, until the computer heats up, then it's all downhill.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
What you're seeing is typical of inexpensive RAM. While RAM may meet the stated DDR2 specs, not all will work with they way Apple's architecture uses the memory. This isn't, btw, limited to the series of PB you own.
Crucial, Kingston (not Valueram line), and Samsung are 3 memory brands that consistently perform well in our PB's. Crucial, for example, guarantees their memory will work if chosen off their memory selector on their web site. You can scan the discussions for other brands that people have found worked, too.
    Crucial is at http://www.crucial.com
    Kingston is at http://www.kingston.com
Samsung is available from a number of sources, one being OWC at http://www.macsales.com

  • Any one's computer freezing after Lion install?

I have an iMac i7 with 8GB RAM.  My machine is not even 2 years old.  I have never had problems with it freezing up on me before, but after I installed Lion, my computer will at random shut down on me.  I get the gray screen that slides down from the top telling me I need to shut down my computer manually.
Is anyone else getting this problem too?

I finally made the leap from PC to Apple and last week bought a new I-Mac 27" 2.7QC and downloaded Lion on to it yesterday (they offered it for free as the machine is so new.)
I know very little about Macs but it is now reguarly freezing on me - in fact i have no idea how to get out of the current screen so have come to my sony laptop to post this.
    I have tried command-alt-backspace; command-esc; command-q
What else should I be trying?  There is a spinning coloured disc and I can move the mouse around but nothing responds.
This was triggered when i tried to open a you-tube video to undersatnd what Twitter for mac is....
I have also had problems posting to Wordpress and Twitter today - with the posts not going through...and so having to come to my laptop!  Madness!
So far I am disappointed - this is my first mac - but I am hoping this is early teething problems.
If all else fails, is it best that I turn the mac off by pressing the button/disc on the back of the screen (does that work?) or should I leave it and wait until the morning to speak to someone?  And / or is there a 24-hour help line I can call.... I've only had the machine for a week!
Many thanks if anyone can help....

  • Computer Freezes After iPhoto Album Mosaic Screen Saver

After using the Mosaic screen saver, my Mac will freeze, therefore resulting in me having to perform a hard shutdown, and reboot my Mac. When my Mac turns back on and I log in, Crash Reporter reports that AdobeResourceSychronizer crashed. The log is found with in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ This occurs approximately once every 3-5 days. The only Adobe software I should have installed is:
    Reader
    Flash
    Shockwave
I switched my screen saver about 1 1/2 weeks ago. I switched it to Spectrum today. Should this solve the issue, or should I check for Adobe junk installed on my computer, or both?
