Computer Freezes and Hard Drive goes bad on shut down and re-start

I have MacBooks running Leopard. We have had several so far this school year where it has frozen on the user. The user holds down the power key to shut-down and re-start. On re-start, either it just gets to the solid gray screen or it might show the folder with the question mark. When I boot it up from an install disk and run disk utility...I try to repair the hard drive which often fails, the drive is grayed out, and I try to re-partition which also fails. I then send them in for AppleCare who has replaced the hard drives. I have about 2-3 a week so far and I'm curious why this is happening. We got the laptops in March so they are relatively new. Is it the shut down process? Remedies to help prevent the freeze up (I'm guessing the kids have too many apps running at one time)? other thoughts?

I'm not sure but have you tried getting them to shutdown through the apple menu instead of the power button?

  • Is my hard drive going bad?

What are some of the signs of a hard drive going bad?
Lately my computer has been acting funny. Every few seconds I hear noises like my computer is trying to do something but then it winds down then stops. It's sounds like it could be the hard drive, but I'm not sure. It even does this when the computer is in sleep mode. I'm not sure what else to do. I've ran several Utillity programs such as Tech Tool Pro and Disk Warrior. I've also ran Disk Utility. While it's doing this it sometimes causes a lag (spinning beach ball) in some of the programs I'm using.
Does it sound like I may need to buy a new hard drive? If so, any suggestions would be much appreciated. Right now I have a 80gig hard drive.
    thanks,
    Tim

    Hello again Tim,
Maybe your machine is not in as bad shape as you are trying not to think about. You have had no errors reported by the hardware test or Tech Tool. Chances are you have a corrupted system cache, internet cache and a couple of .plist (preference) files, which common and not difficult to cure.
First thing to do is to install and run a cache cleaner. I've attached the link to Onyx. After you've installed and opened Onyx select the cleaning button. Then select system cache and internet cache and run it.
You should also delete the preference files for Mail and for Safari and any other apps that seem to hang. The easiest way to find them is by typing the app's name into the search box of a Finder window and delete the .plist files. You can delete any of these files for slow apps without danger of removing important files - anything with .plist is OK. I've also attached a link to free app that checks all your system preference files. It may pick up on the corruption without eliminating them one by one.
Don't pull the RAM yet! There's still a few more tricks to try.

  • Hard drive goes crazy for 60 seconds after iPhoto starts up

When I launch iPhoto 08 v7.1 (347) with a library of 1500 photos (about 2.5GB), my photos appear in about 3 seconds. But then my hard drive does a alot of reading/writing for 60 seconds straight. This hard disk churning happens every time I start up iPhoto 08. I don't recall this happening in iPhoto 6. I have a plenty of free RAM and hard drive space, and the CPU is barely utilized. I can do stuff in iPhoto while the hard disk is churning, so what is iPhoto doing in the background?
    Has anyone else experienced this?

I figured out why mds was running so long. I have an external firewire drive connected to back up my internal MBP drive periodically. I had disabled* Spotlight indexing on the partition that backs up my boot volume since I never needed to search there.
Apparently, Spotlight indexing must be enabled on any connected boot volume. So I re-enabled spotlight indexing and dragged the volume to the privacy pane in the Spotlight preferences so it wouldn't actually index anything even though it was enabled.
When launching iPhoto now, mds only spikes for a second, which is what I would expect as normal behavior. I tested this several times to be sure.
Bottom line, if mds is running unusually long when iPhoto launches, make sure all boot volumes, internal or external, have Spotlight indexing enabled. I don't understand why this is the case, but it is.
*Note: disabling/enabling spotlight indexing on a volume can be done through terminal commands or third party tools.

  • OS X freezes when hard drive goes to sleep

So i have been virtually PC free for about a year now and I am absolutely loving it. I love it so much I use my 12 inch iBook all of the time. It is run constantly as I am an open source developer and I do a lot of coding.
Anyways, about 2 weeks ago my mac started to freeze whenever I would walk away from it for a few moments. This is not the kernle panic screen that i am talking about. I mean that os x just froze. I could not do anything. Nothing responded. It never happened while I was at my computer just when I walked away for a few moments. It would happen at least 3-4 times a day.
I got fed up trying to get it to work so I did a backup and reinstalled everything. It was about time for me to reorganize anyways so this was good. I thoughtmy problems were over until it started freezing again. I sat down at though of what could be making it freeze. The only thing that my mac does when I walk away is to put the hd to sleep. So i turned that setting off in the energy saver and my mac has not froze for the past couple of days.
    What I am wondering is...
Has anyone else had this problem? If so what can i do to get it fixed? Is it a hardware problem, ie I need to get my harddrive replaced, or is it an os x problem?
    Thanks for any help
    Craig

Good thing you turned that setting off. Though it saves energy (and I'm quite the environmentalist) putting the HDD to sleep actually is very hard on it and wears it out much faster because it is constantly starting and stopping. I found this program called Drive Genius that does a pretty good job of diagnosing Hard drive problems. I would suggest you pick up a copy and run some diagnostic test, or maybe try running the apple hardware test off of the Tiger Boot CD.

  • Hard drive going bad ??

My drive is making like a clanging noise . Still working but slowing down I think . I want to replace it . Will any IDE 2.5  hard drive work ??
Also after I instal do I just run the OSX  reinstall the operating system and will be good to go ????

Well, personally, I would miss AppleWorks very much.
The 4200 rpm drive is rather slow, but if you don't care about that, it should work. I would bump it up to at least 80 GB, though.
I don't know what kind of price you're seeing, but here is the entire list from Other World Computing.
Instructions for replacing the hard drive (a rather tricky procedure) can be found in the iFix-It Guide.
Once you get the drive physically installed, start up from the Mac OS X 10.3 Install CD #1, go to Installer > Disk Utility and partition the disk into one partition (if desired) and choose Apple Partition Map (Mac OS Extended, Journaled). Then you are ready to install the OS. Just follow the installer's instructions.
    Good luck.

  • My computer seems to be unresponsive: black screen, wont shut down and wont start up.

I cant seem to make it shut down completly or re-start, it seems to be in sleep mode and wont wake up. When I try and re-start it makes a sound like its trying to eject a disc (there is nothing in the cd drive). Anyone have any ideas? thanks much!!

Wow, sounds like it s goner.
If your not going to get it fixed, you can remove the drive and use a IDE/SATA to USB adpater to migrate or data recovery to a new Mac.

  • Ok! so i tried updating my ipad 2 software to I.O.S 6.1 and it failed then continued to shut down and put the plug into itunes logo on my screen! I then i have been trying to update and restore my Ipad 2, then it says corrupt file and stops any advice?

This is ridiculous!!!!! Apple Corporation needs to fix what ever went wrong with IOS 6.1 update and they better do it soon or theyre going to have a mob on their hands!! i have been continuosly restoring and updating my iPad 2 and it always says corrupt file then restarts the whole process! im going out of my mind and im about to say to **** with it and call apple themselves and make so many complaints that theyll fix it within the hour or i will go to new york city at the head of the corporation and make the most skeptical and most embarrissing seen that they will end up ashamed to even be working for a company with the supposedly "SMARTEST AND BRIGHTEST TECHNOLOGICAL PEOPLE IN THE U.S." who cant even get a software update correct so that it doesnt make some of our lives harder then they need to be! and if its already known to be corrupt then should take it off the whatever update liost and fix it before anyone else has to go what ive gone through, cause its pure torcher!! i paid good money for a product for easy use whenever and thats not what im getting when they cant even make a simple update thats supposed to help but only makes my product worse and make me wanna never buy from them again!

  • My computer does not start up right away after I close the top... Is my hard drive going bad? Help please!

I typically just close my computer when I'm done with it, instead of putting it to sleep or logging off. Recently, when I open it back up, it does not start right away. I have to press the power button half a dozen times before it starts. HELP!!

    annie1977-
    Greetings and welcome.
Try booting from the system install CD/DVD by putting the disk in the drive and starting up while holding down the c key.
After boot-up find the Disk Utility, either on the desktop or under the Apple menu. Select your startup drive and the repair permissions on that drive. See if that helps.
    Luck-

  • Message says Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit. It shuts down and I can't get it to reopen.

Lightroom crashed my PC. When i went to restart the program I receive the same error message. It says it will trouble shoot problem on restart but the same thing happens.

OK. I'm getting closer. Not sure what worked but I have a working LR5 now. However, I cannot seem to load all my files. Newest message is this.
This is for images previously imported into LR 4 from my Nikon D810. Any suggestions?
    Thanks RPT

  • When my screen goes to sleep and then the hard drive goes to sleep why won't the screen wake up?

I can repeat this 100% of the time.  If I let the screen go to sleep (or I manually put it to sleep) and I shut the computer so the hard drive goes to sleep (or if the hard drive simply goes to sleep on the timer), when I open the Macbook Pro the screen will not wake up, although I think the hard drive does as the back light on the keyboard turns on.  Any ideas on why this is happening.  My computer is 4 weeks old...a bit frustrating.  The best answer I have gotten is get a new one for Apple...or completely re-install the OS.
    Jared

The reason why it's happening is not obvious and can't be determined without more information. The fact that you can reproduce the problem makes it a lot more tractable.
As a first step, boot in safe mode (shift key down at startup.) Can you reproduce the problem now? If so, note the time, then reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and look in the system log for error messages at the time the screen failed to wake up.
