Computer freezes at Apple screen, dial stops turning after accidentally turning off computer during Migration?

Accidentally turned off my Powermac G5 in the middle of a migration from my iMac G4 and now will turn on, but stops at apple screen, dial stops moving. HELP!

Hello,
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Apple Screen Hang and Turn off

    Hi Everyone!
Big probs here. Earlier this evening, I was using the ol' Mac (surfing, chatting etc.. nothing heavy).. started hanging and acting sluggish.. so I gave it a restart...
Now it hangs on the Apple Screen, spinning, for about 20 seconds.. and then turns off!!!!
I've tried the PRAM, X key force, Target Mode to an old G3 (which i'm posting with now), Safe mode etc. I should have a Windows partition as well.. which it won't find..
Nothing has changed in my system, except for the x.x.2 update and the graphics and aluminum keyboard updates... all over the weekend. I'm seeing alot of similar posts.. but few solutions..

    UPDATE>>>
for what its worth.. I took my machine to the local Apple Store. Failed HD is the answer. All data lost. I'm reading that this happening to a lot of people.
The worst is they told me that it would be 7-10 days unless i bought ProCare for 100$.. then it would ready same day. I need my machine.. so I paid.. They call me 8 hours later to tell me that the HD is not in stock.. and it will take... 7-10 days!!! I'm starting to feel a bit like a sucker. If I didn't need my Mac for my very livelyhood.. I'm not sure where I would be right now!
Thanks for reading if not posting!

  • Hey what does it mean when i charge my ipod and its on the battery screen and it turns to the apple screen then it turns off and it just keeps repeatedly doing it

it doesnt seem to wanna charge i just got it its an 8 gb black ipod with the camera on both sides

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

I transferred my library to a new laptop and everything appeared on the screen. I turned off the old computer and the library disappeared. How can I make it a permanent transfer as my old computer is being scrapped. Thanks

    Hello Terryfrank,
Congratulations on your new laptop!  Also, thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with transferring your iTunes Library to your new computer.
I notice that you are coming from the article “iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer,” and it sounds like you might have used the Home Sharing method outlined in that article.
With Home Sharing, you can stream content from another computer, and it sounds like that is how you have it currently set up.  The last step is to import the content to your new computer.  Use these steps on the new computer (while the old computer is on) to import the music to your new computer’s hard drive:
Once your new computer sees the Home Share from your old computer, click that Home Share on the left side of iTunes on your new computer.
Select the content in the Home Share that you want to transfer to your iTunes library on your new computer, or choose Edit > Select All to choose all of it. Then, click the Import button in the bottom-right corner of iTunes.
Wait for the content to finish transferring.
Additionally, if you want to transfer your playlists, you can export them from the old computer to the new computer:
    Transferring playlists
If you want not only your content but also your playlists to exist on your new computer, you will want to transfer a copy of all your playlists from your old computer. To do this, choose File > Library > Export Library on your old computer. Save the XML file that is created to your desktop.
Send the playlists file to yourself as an e-mail attachment, use an external drive, or use file sharing to move the playlists file to your new computer. Once the file is on your new computer, open iTunes and choose File > Library > Import Playlist. The import process will remove any items from the playlists that you didn't share via Home Sharing.

  • HT4904 I need to repair my start up disc so I have to start up from installation disc. In doing so, my computer restarts, I hear the mac sound, then a grey screen and then turns off and goes on in this cycle endlessly. Why can't I restart from disc?

I need to repair my start up disc so I have to start up from installation disc. In doing so, my computer restarts, I hear the mac sound, then a grey screen and then turns off and goes on in this cycle endlessly. Why can't I restart from disc?

Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
          logo appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.

Hi , and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions).
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
Hold alt or option key at bootup, do asny boot choices show up?

    1. Try forcing reboot by holding down the home button and power/sleep button at the same time until the screen restarts.
    -- IF THAT FAILS --
    Let the phone battery drain.

  • How do I turn off the Genius app in App Store. I've gone to Settings/Privacy/Location Services/System Services then swiped Genius for apps 'off''. Also, I've gone to Settings/ITunes and App Stores/Click on AppleID/View Apple ID and then turn off Genius.

How do I turn off the Genius app in App Store. I've gone to Settings/Privacy/Location Services/System Services then swiped Genius for apps 'off''. Also, I've gone to Settings/ITunes and App Stores/Click on AppleID/View Apple ID and then turn off Genius. Still nothing has worked. I'm still stuck with Genius offering the same apps to me. Mind you, once I click on the App Store there is nothing I can do but swipe left and right. There's absolutely nothing at the bottom of the screen like a features tab, nothing. There is, however, a categories button at the top, but that's it. Irrelevant.

FWIW, I just got off the phone with Apple technical support about this.  I use Genuis for creating playlists, so I don't want to disable it, but Apple support confirmed that there is no way to avoid syncing Genius data without disabling Genius altogether.  I'd read somewhere else that subscribing to iTunes Match might allow you to avoid this, but that is NOT the case, as I've confirmed, and Apple support has confirmed.  For me, it routinely syncs thousands genius of items, so I have to allow a lot of time for my manual syncs.

  • My screen no longer turns off when idol.

My screen won't turn off after idol period. Set for 2 minutes but stays on unless I turn it of manually. Any suggestion?

Hard reset-hold home and power button until it power cycles. If that doesn't fix it backup and restore. If that doesn't fix it restore as new. If that doesn't fix it take it in to Apple.

  • My iPad just died. The gear symbol came up and then the screen went blank (turned off). It was fully charged so that wan't the issue.

My iPad just died. The gear symbol came up and then the screen went blank (turned off). It was fully charged so that wan't the issue.

That is indicating that the device has gone into recovery mode. Press just the Power button until the red Power Off slider appears and slide to turn it off. Then power it back up to see if it has exited Recovery Mode. If it has, then you should be good to go.
If it has not, then the issue you had that caused the iPad to turn off was one that put your device into Recovery mode requiring that you go through the recovery process (i.e., the reset did not process since the issue required a recovery to resolve). Here is a link that explains what you need to do to get out of Recovery Mode in that case:

  • Log in screen appear after Mac goes to sleep even if screen lock is turned off.

Log in screen appear after Mac goes to sleep even if screen lock is turned off. This happens usually but not always. Using Yosemite, 2 year old iMac. This has only started to occur recently and it happened in Mavericks also.

    Howdy stkh,
You may want to check the General pane of the Security & Privacy System preferences to make sure that the Require password...after sleep or screen saver begins is not checked. See this article for reference -
