Computer freezes during backup

I'm running Snow Leopard on my 2007 MacBook Pro. I bought and installed a 1 T time capsule in December, and it worked fine for about a month. Then it started hanging up during backups; I thought the problem was interference from open programs. I started making a habit of closing everything before backups started. Tonight I waited about 10 minutes for it to finish backing up about 5 m of data; then synchronization came on automatically. Twenty minutes later neither had finished, so I did the only thing that helps: powering off manually. What's the remedy? Does it help to reinstall Snow Leopard, should I return my time capsule, or just forget about automatic backups? Right now, I have to wait at least 5 or 10 minutes after waking it from sleep before I dare to even check my mail.

I experience similar trouble. Time Capsule use kills my iMac.
We are long-time Apple users and I bought a 2TB time capsule to back-up my new iMac. I set-up for a first back-up using ethernet for speed as recommended. The backup data transfer ran at kbits/sec ! It took days for that first run. Since then the iMac performance went through the floor. Every hour (WHY is that not configureable?)
Because when it's working properly, that's best. If it's not working properly, fix it. Then the hourly backups will be quick and rarely noticed, as they are for most folks.
when TimeMachine kicks-in the 3GHz Core 2 Duo iMac becomes unusable - almost completely frozen. It crashes at least 5 times per day. After a few weeks of misery I disconnect the time capsule and life returned to normal. Today, feeling foolishly optimistic, I reconnected the capsule. Instantly the iMac was in trouble. The spinning wheel of death active in every application as I desperately tried to regain enough control to bring up the force-quit menu. Disconnected the capsule but it was too late and I had to use the power button to restart. All my s/w is up-to-date. All instructions followed 'by the book'.
Really? What "book" was that?
If you just want to complain, please disregard this.
If you want some help fixing it, this is the place. Start by following the suggestions in my previous post. If those don't help, post back with what you've done and the results, and provide some clarification: what crashes at least 5 times per day, Time Machine backups or your Mac?
How much data is on your internal HD, and any other disks being backed-up?

  • My 4th gen ipod won't backup after it froze during a software update to 4.3.5. I had to cancel the backup at the start of the update and now it won't let me backup to my computer, freezes during backup or says my backup is corrupted.

I pressed 'X' during a backup after it froze during an update to software 4.3.5 and now it won't let me backup on my computer. Does anyone have any ideas? It either freezes during backup or says my 'backup is corrupted' or 'I cannot backup on my computer'. I have had to abort quite a few attempted backups since the initial problem, which I think has made it worse. I have already tried restoring my ipod, deleting the aborted backup from my preferences/devices in itunes and deleting it from my user/appdata/etc on my PC hard drive. Any ideas what to try next?

After hours of frustration I eventually decided to restore. I lost my apps, but i didn't have many and was able to reinstall them for free. During the restore it updated my ipod to the latest software 4.3.5, which i think may have caused the initial problem, but the backup issue remains. Sometimes it stops me from syncing and other times it allows me to skip the backup, but still says that i can't backup on my computer. I'm worried that it has done something to my computer as it took me six hours to do a Bullguard scan, which only normally takes about an hour. The scan didn't come up with any viruses, but it stalled at system32 for ages. The only other thing that i can think of is that a demo CD I uploaded may have caused a problem. iTunes couldn't find a track listing for it but gave me a few different options. i thought I had to choose one to continue, so did that then changed the track details to the correct tracks. I'm now worried that may have introduced an issue or caused a glitch in iTunes. How paranoid am I sounding?

  • Macbook Pro freezes during Backup

    Hi Folks,
I have just upgraded my previous TC 500 GB to a 2 TB version and have since been having a serious problem:
My Macbook freezes (colorful ring of death) completely during backups (only the first backup went through smoothly, all other did not).
    The following applies:
    1) My wife's Macbook does not have these problems during backup on the same time-capsule
    2) My relevant file "sparsebundle" ist about 310 GB big
    3) It NOT make a difference, if I'm connected by wifi or by ethernet -> the mac hangs/freezes either way
    4) I tried deleting my (not my wife's) sparsebundle yesterday and then doing a "full reset" of the TC. After that I wanted to backup freshly by ethernet over night (wifi was switched off). This morning I found my mac frozen w/o any successful backup done.
    5) no logs could be found in the logging widget -> it was empty
    6) I ran the long version of Apple Hardware Test just to be sure I wasn't having a RAM issue. But all is well there, no problems found.
    7) I did not manually fill in the TC settings again, the TC 2TB was connected to my old TC 500GB and took its settings from it.
    My infrastructure is:
2x Airport Express as repeaters running on 7.4.2.
1x 2TB Time Capsule running on 7.5. (but like I said, disabling wifi and connecting by cable made no difference.)
    Can anyone help please?
    Thanks!

Turns out it was faulty RAM, eventhough they did not show up as faulty in Apple's Hardware Test

  • FIX FOR:computer freezes during install of Leopard on a G4 MDD w/ ATI x800!

I had problems with freezing during installation of Tiger & Leopard on my G4 MDD. It took some trouble shooting, but when I installed Tiger I found out that the freeze was from the video card I had installed, an ATI x800 xt 256mb AGP video card. I do not know why this card freezes the installation process, but I found a way to get the installation to complete without freezing. I took an old ATI PCI video card, installed it in an empty PCI slot, connected monitor to PCI card, and then installed Tiger with no problems. After install I hooked the monitor back up to the AGP ATI card and it worked great. So when my G4 froze with the Leopard installation I did the same thing, switched to an old PCI video card and Leopard installed with no problems whatsoever, then I switched back to AGP card after install. I hope this helps someone.

  • Computer freezes during startup

My Mac book pro. Freezes during startup.  Spinning wheel goes for about 15 seconds, then just stops.  Any ideas?

Ok, I tried that and it didn't help, but thanks for the suggestion anyway because device drivers are always a pain in this.
Then I started looking for log file changes because I suspected that something (related) ought to be logged about this nagging bug. The witch hunt directed me towards the google updater agent -- whatever -- that got stuck on bringing chrome to the latest level.
I read all sort of incompatibilities between google chrome and macbooks, this could be another one. I downloaded the latest version of chrome manually, overwrote the existing implementation of chrome and the freeze-up seemed to vanish.
    Not so nice this all.

  • Time Machine Freezes During Backup!

    Hi there,
When I back up my computer for the first time using Time Machine, it gets to around 53.2 GB. After that, it sits there with the blue progress bar at the same level. Then, i get a message that says I did not eject the disk properly, and then Time Machine alerts me that it could not finish the backup. NOTE: When it says the disk has not been ejected properly, I still see the disk in both Finder and disk utility. Also, I currently have the disk in 2 partitions, but I'm only using the Mac OS X (Journaled) partition for my Time Machine backups. Please help! Like I said, it seems to eject my external hard drive (Hitachi 250 GB Simple Drive) after freezing up for a while. I am able to use other things on my computer the whole time. The only application that was open during the backup was iTunes. Here is the log from Time Machine buddy:

As a first step, launch Disk Utility, select the backup volume, and run "Verify Disk" (NOT "Repair Disk"). It will take a long time to run, maybe hours. If any errors are found, copy all data on the device to another drive, then run "Repair Disk." Be prepared for the possibility that "Repair Disk" may destroy the volume beyond recovery. It may also fail to repair the damage, in which case you should replace the device -- DO NOT erase it and continue to use it.

  • Computer Freezes during Playback, Render and Scrubbing in Premiere Pro CS5.5

    CPU - Intel i7 980 3.33GHz
    RAM - 12GB (6 x 2GB) Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600
    PSU - 850watt Corsair
Graphics Card - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570
C: Drive - 600GB Velociraptor (with only program files stored on the drive)
OS - Windows Ultimate 7, 64-bit, Service Pack 1 (up to date)
Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Production Premium (with all updates)
My problem occurs only in Premiere Pro CS5.5 and not with any other Adobe programs, including After Effects.  Playback, scrubbing, or rendering in my Premiere Pro timeline causes the computer to freeze.  When it freezes I cannot move the mouse, I cannot use the keyboard, there is no automatic shutdown, and there is no BSOD.  The computer just freezes, forever, and needs to be shutdown manually.
This problem began a few weeks ago, only happening occassionaly.  Recently the problem has escalated to the point that I cannot use Premiere Pro CS5.5 for more than 30 seconds before it freezes.
I have several different Premiere Pro projects saved to a 1TB WD Black Caviar HDD.  In some of the projects I am using Cineform converted .mov files and in others I am using the raw(compressed) footage directly from a Canon DSLR.  This dedicated harddrive has 60% free space.
Mercury PLayback Acceleration is enabled, and I have been successfully using Premiere and the rest of the creative suite intensively since October 2011 with absolutely NO problems.  I cannot remember the system ever crashing once during this time period, until now, which is remarkable.  All software on my computer is legitimate, and there are no third party codecs installed.
What can I do to fix this problem?  All help is extremely appreciated.  THANK-YOU!
    Drew Norton

Thank you, Harm I will do this.  In response to the video card being a possible cause of the problem,  I moved forward and downloaded Furmark to test it.  When running Furmark the program crashes.  It gets going on the test and crashes, and apparently according to other websites this means my graphics card is not running at capacity.  Do any of you have experience with this?
If it is as clean cut as a busted graphics card I would be very excited to know.

  • Computer Freezes during games - crash logs included - help?

My PowerMac has been crashing during WC3 and Halo (1.5.2) for the last six months or so. I though it might be hardware, but I switched out my PM Dual 2.0 for a PM Dual 2.5 with my Dad, and the only things I kept were the hard drives and airport card. Still they freeze and force restart. I just erased my hard drive and installed Leopard from scratch. SAME PROBLEM, even though in most cases I reinstalled fresh versions of software (and only a limited amount). I pulled Halo and WC3 from my backup instead of reinstalling, knowing that I've reinstalled them each several times previous from scratch and still had the same problem. Can you help?
    Thanks

I've got 2.5 gig of memory, both games are Leopard compatible (and had the exact same problem in Tiger), and all have current patches. I also own both games, so I know it's not about downloading some faulty bits for P2P or anything like that. I also have 75 GB of available memory out of a possible 300 GB, so it's not that there's a lack of space causing problems. As I mentioned, I erase/installed a fresh OS. I've turned off airport, alternated between hard drives, tried creating a new user account, even ejected my backup hard drive in case that was gumming things up. Permissions and repairs are A-OK.
I finally found a thread that suggested there some issue with dual processors and 3D games, though primarily the people who were talking about it were Intel users, many of whom were playing games through BootCamp and Parallels. Nothing helpful there.
    Any more thoughts?

  • Computer Freezes during games - crash logs included

    Thanks

  • ITunes sometimes freezes during backup phase of syncing

Usually every day or two when I plug my iPhone in to my Mac to Sync (ios 4.1, iTunes 10) it hangs during the backup phase - even if I leave it for hours. I then disconnect the iphone and shut it down but it hangs when it shuts down (just a spinning wheel). I then force restart it and then it syncs with iTunes and but at the end says it was unable to back it up. I then unplug it and plug it back it and then it syncs and backs up fine again. As I said this doesn't happen everytime I sync my phone but usually once in 4-6 syncs. Any ideas on what might be going on here? It has also happened to me once or twice on my iPad so am wondering if it might be an issue on the iTunes side.

This is exactly what's been happening to my iPad for the last month or two. Backups used to be very, very slow before I installed iOS 4.2 but now I have the same problem with a complete backup hang every 5 or so syncs.
I spoke to someone at the Genius Bar when I was there for another reason the other day and he said it was likely to be something to do with photo syncing but I wasn't clear exactly what aspect of photo syncing was causing the problem. Anyone got any ideas?

  • Computer freezes during sync

I tried to sync my ipod today and when I plug it into the computer,
the computer completely freezes. The mouse freezes. The only way to un-freeze
the computer is to turn off the computer. Alt-Ctl Delete will not shut off the computer. I have to unplug it. I tried it at least 5 times and still
nothing. I-tunes was working fine. The Ipod still works with my headphones.
    Any suggestions??

Welcome to the club...I just had this problem and ended up returning my "new" refurbished 3g ipod (15gb) to the apple store for another one. My 3g ipod would lock up itunes and then the mac after loading about 300-700 songs out of 2500. I am currently awaiting my replacement's replacement.

  • On Leopard after running software update computer freezes during restart

    Hi All,
I hope I am posting this in the right place. I have installed Leopard (brand new installation with formating the HD before install). It went lovely. Migrate all of my accounts and settings form my other HD. BTW that other HD was upgraded to Leopard they the upgrade feature of Leopard instal and had the same problem that I'm going to describe here. After installation was complete, I worked on my computer just fine for a few hours, restarted it a few time an it worked great. I've installed software updates (iTunes 7.5 QT7.3 etc...) at this point when my system requested a restart and I click "restart" button, the computer tried to restart and froze at the point when the screen went black but the tower never restarted. In fact after about a minute of system being frozen, all of the fans in the tower went blowing full force.
Now, here is the history. I've done the Leopard upgrade on my system HD a week before this happened and after downloading this software update had the same problem. Can not restart at all. The computer works fine for about 1 day and after that the system starts to slow down a lot.
I called Apple, they didn't know what that was. Went to Apple store, they check the hardware and... It's good. Was advised to reinstall the Leopard on "clean" HD with brand new installation rather then update. I did all this yesterday on my 2nd HD and as I've said above, it worked just fine until I've installed this update.
So, my question to you all. Did anyone else experienced this type of problem?
I'm still on hold wanting for Apple tech support to try and resolve this with them. I was just hoping that some of you may know this and may have a fix/advise for me.
Thank you in advance for your help

  • Computer freezes during sleep

Since upgrading to Leopard, if I let my hard drive go to sleep, many times (but not always?) it will lock up. When it locks up, the only way I can use the computer is to perform a hard shut-down, then reboot. Has anyone else seen this and is there a solution?

Be very sure you are not simply catching the computer between states.
This happened to me a few times before I realized it was in the "going to sleep" mode but not there yet. I did what you did the first time. Then I decided to do nothing and after a few minutes, the machine was sound asleep as usual.
If you see the "pilot" light dimly lit but not out, see what happens if you just wait a few more minutes.
