Computer freezes up and every operation says "not responding?"

My HP Pavilion windows Vista Home Premium keeps freezing up on me and the windows are frequently "not responding."
It is becoming annoying every time I turn on the computer and it is also running slow.  What could be the problem?

Are you still able to move the mouse around? Try opening the task manager and look at your ram and cpu levels when this happens.

  • When I open Firefox, it goes to the first page and then stops, saying "Not Responding" with the cursor spinning. What can I do to fix this? Thanks for any help

When I open Firefox, it goes to the first page I open, but then stops and says "Not Responding" with the mouse cursor spinning. I hit the close button and it says Windows is searching for a solution (which doesn't come).
When I open Firefox again, it says:
    Well, this is embarrassing.
Firefox is having trouble recovering your windows and tabs. This is usually caused by a recently opened web page.
    You can try:
Removing one or more tabs that you think may be causing the problem
Starting an entirely new browsing session
Any ideas? I gretly appreciate any help. Thanks!!

    What is that first page?
Can't you open any web pages in Firefox?
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • I transferred my files, including iTunes, to a new computer. When I go to sync, it says I'm still synced with the old, do I want to erase and resync. AND then it says not enough space. What to do?

I transferred my files, including iTunes, to a new computer. When I go to sync, it says I'm still synced with the old, do I want to erase and resync. AND then it says not enough space. What to do?

Pictures, assuming they were taken with the device, can be copied off at any time.  This has nothing to do with syncing.
If the pictures were instead synced to the device via iTunes, they are not the original images.  Instead, they are optimized copies of the originals for display on the iPhone.  There is software that can extract them, google it.
Where is the backup of the computer?  And before you ask, the iPhone, like all iDevices, is not and has never been a backup device.

  • Photoshop wont open and says not responding when error message comes up

I have photoshop cs6 and it will not open. After trying to open for awhile it says not responding in my dock. Then an error message pops up saying photoshop unexpectedly closed. It happened once before and crashed my whole computer to where no applications would open and only my desktop would work.

As soon as you start Photoshop quick as you can press ans hold Shift+Ctrl+Alt.  If you do that in time Photoshop should prompt you ask if you want to delete your preferences reply Yes.

  • When restoring an iPhoto library I got an "unexpected error" message and the operation could not be completed. Is my best choice to try again?

One of my external hard drives died. I had several iPhoto libraries in it. Fortunately, I used Time Machine to backup to a Time Capsule and I can see all the iPhoto library icons in Backups.
When restoring the first iPhoto library, after three hours, I got an "unexpected error" message and the operation could not be completed. Indeed, the restored library is smaller than the library in Backups. Is my best choice to try again and replace the restored library (which apparently must be missing some photos)? It would mean another 3 hours plus of restoration with fingers crossed...
Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

I am always suspicious of using a different OS to the one that was used to run the backup.. ie if you used Snow L to backup then there is absolutely nothing wrong with using SL to restore.
Mount the TC sparsebundle and verify it using disk utility.
    A5 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You might also like to load the widget in Time Machine so you get whatever the full error message is..
I cannot find any reference to the error code you are getting..
My recommendation would be to try it on a different computer.. restore the whole backup to an external drive large enough to accept the whole backup.
Use the manual methods pondini recommends.

Use ethernet only. Turn off wireless so it does not enter the situation.

You could try the new Reset feature. This duplicates certain key data from your active settings folder into a new one, bypassing some add-ons and custom settings. Your plugins will still be active, but could be disabled manually if you like.
More information in this article: [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]].
If the new settings folder has the same problem, you can switch back to your current folder, if you like, using Firefox's Profile Manager. (See [[Use the Profile Manager to create and remove Firefox profiles]] -- don't delete anything just yet; use this dialog to switch back and forth as needed.)
Does it work better after a reset?

  • When composing a new message with Thunderbird, the program freezes & says "not responding"

Recently, I needed to reset my 'Main work Computer' to factory default. Before I wiped everything I saved all the messages addresses etc via Mozback, I then transferred all the info to the laptop to see if it works, which it does.
After this I re-installed Thunderbird to my recently reset computer, I used Mozback up to restore all the information as set like it was previously.
It was working great for about a day then only recently I came across this problem:
Thunderbird still receives mail & I can read it, however when I try 'compose new message', 'reply' or 'forward' a message the new box will open up ready to type into except it freezes & it says not responding.
I have it on my laptop & its working fine for now but I'm wanting it to work on the Main Computer!!
    What should I do??

I've figured it out!!! Because I had only just reset the computer to factory default, I decided to reset it again & follow my steps to see what may of happened.
I installed all programs including Thunderbird & it was all working fine...
Until I decided to load a whole heap of fonts into the System. This is where something went wrong with Thunderbird & would freeze when composing a message. So I deleted the fonts I had just installed & it worked again... Now I only load fonts one at a time when I need to. (I am a sign designer, we need fonts!!)

  • Why do I get 'mobile me' in settings and not icloud? when I try to go into it, it says not responding, try later.

    Hi
Could anyone help me with this please?
Why do I get 'mobile me' in settings on my imac and not 'icloud'? when I try to go into it, it says not responding, try later.
    Thanks

Why do I get 'mobile me' in settings on my imac and not 'icloud'?
Because your operating system is too old. iCloud was introduced in Mac OS X 10.7.4 and later. You can upgrade through the Mac App Store. The latest version is Mac OS X 10.9.3 and is free if your Mac is capable of running it (late 2007 IMac's and newer).
when I try to go into it, it says not responding, try later.
MobileMe was shut down forever a few years ago, that's why it doesn't work any more.

  • Hi, everytime I go onto abode illustrator it crashes almost immediately and just says 'not responding'. it seems to resolve itself but then everytime you click something it just says not responding again. :/ any help is appreciated.

Nobody can tell you anything without proper system and version info and ideally crash logs.

  • Firefox 4.0b10 will randomly lock up and say (Not Responding) in the title bar, and sometimes takes 1min to become usable again.

Most of the time when I launch Firefox 4.0b10 it will hang for 30sec-1min before loading. It will show a white page and say (Not Responding) in the title bar.
It also does this when opening a new tab, clicking any link, and sometimes scrolling down a page.

My McCaffee was a trial thing, I think. I clicked on it to see if it was updated, and it said it was expired. So I'm just going to uninstall it completely and install AdAware, which is all I've ever used for years and never had a problem.
It occurs to me -- this must (?) have something to do with my new computer... it was slow right out of the box, and I called ASUS tech support the second day I had the puter up and running, and the tech asked me to do a System File Check (SFC), but discovered that the normal pathways through which one would do a SFC (according to him) did not work - the machine would not either recognize them or it would simply swallow the command and then just do nothing... he put me on hold for a few minutes. He came back with a workaround (don't remember it exactly, but it involved a DOS prompt), and I was able to finally run a SFC, which revealed "corrupted files" that had to be "repaired."
In a brand new computer? That can't be a good thing... Maybe the system software factory install was just a bad install? Because I had some slow Firefox issues on my old machine (Acer, dual core, 4gRAM, 2009 machine), but NOTHING like this. This is getting very frustrating. I'm used to just sitting down to my computer and using it, not sitting down and fighting with it for 2 or 3 minutes or more before i can do anything.

  • Updated to v 4.0.1. when searching. FF says not responding and uses half a gig of memory

i have been using FF for years. it auto updated to 4.0.1 but now when i open FF. Do a search. as soon as i press enter system ram goes down and FF says not responding. and it uses 500mb RAM + and i have to force close. i have re-installed it and even factory rest my laptop thinking it was that. but Still the problem persists ??? i have gone back to a older version and that is working fine as i am using it to ask this question

Nothing is working and I can't find the Roboform toolbar. Your lack of direct support is really irritating- a live chat at least would be helpful.

  • I recently purchased a movie (Prometheus) on my computer through iTunes and every time I try to put it on my iPhone, it fails. How can I successfully sync this video? Mind you, every other file syncs flawlessly.

Can you connect to a wifi source on the device? Enable wifi in settings on the device itself. If you don't have wifi at home, there may be a local hotspot you can use for this.
The reason this happens is carriers don't want people downloading huge files that would slow their network as well as eat up your data plan.

You can reinstall CS3 and enter the serial number to activate the software.

  • Firefox 4.0 freezes, crashes, closes, changes screens, does not respond, and runs 8X SLOWER than 3.6.

Firefox 4.0 is the WORST browser I have ever seen. It freezes, crashes, closes, changes screens, does not respond, and runs 8X SLOWER than 3.6. Tasks I used to do in 30 minutes, now takes me 40 minutes or more. I went back to 3.6 and immediately had a tremendous improvement.
Mozilla needs to get rid of this load of lies about a new crap program, and go back to the 3.6 version. Version 4.0 is WORST than any other program I have ever seen.

The slow / hesitant scrolling problem seems to be an artifact of the database Firefox uses to keep track of where you go, what you do, etc. It uses sqlite databases which get fragmented over time.
    There are several fixes:
Some are add-ons and work internally, such as Vacuum Places (search the addons for it).
Some are external. Speedyfox is one I just tried, and found to work quite well. I think it did a better job than Vacuum Places, but requires Firefox to be shut down before it can work properly.
Find Speedyfox using a web search.
