Computer Freezes when testing VGA Bios

I have a K8T Neo-FIS2R, AMD 64 3200, 1GB Kingmax ram, PNY GF4 Ti 4200, WinXP SP1.
One day I left my computer on for ten hours, when I came back the computer was was still on but nothing was working, I restarted the computer and it stopped at "testing VGA Bios" and didn't continue. I had problems with my power supply when I first built my computer, so I got a Enermax 460W (yes I plugged in the 12V too). That didn't work. I was wondering if there was something wrong with my motherboard and/or my videocard.
I hate Tech support.

Test with another videocard...see what happens....

  • ITunes and Computer freezes when ipod is connected

When I connect my video ipod to my computer (dell desktop) the system freezes, as in it will not respond to mouse clicks and keyboard (but can still get to task manager). When I unplug the ipod it comes back to life. Programs always freeze, but sometimes I am able to navigate within windows without it freezing, but as soon as a program is brought up, my computer falls to its knees.
I have the latest version of iTunes, and updater v. 1.1, (but I have not been able to update the firmware yet from v 1.0).
The odd thing is last night I was able to download several gigs worth of music to it without incident. I then tried to load movies (they were in the wrong format, but I didn't know it at the time), and so in an effort to correct that I uninstalled itunes, the ipod drivers, and the ipod updater programs several times.
I cannot update the ipod firmware because the computer freezes when the ipod is plugged in, so the program freezes as well. Kind of a catch 22 situation.
I have been over the forums and help archives for about an hour and a half now and I have come up dry.
Windows XP does recognize the ipod when the cable is connected, and the ipod flashes, "Do not disconnect", which it is supposed to do.
I suspect this is drivers/software, but I have no idea where to go from here.
    Help?

    Hey!
That EXACT thing happened to me! 2 nights ago I'm downloading like crazy, all is well. I got on LimeWire and downloaded some videos and tried to put them on my iPod. Imported them into iTunes then tried to put em on my iPod and it completely wiped out all my songs! So I get back on, put the songs back in, and about half way through the update the thing freezes. I've re-installed everything, and have reset my iPod. Did you figure out what to do? Maybe your fix will fix my problem, too.
    Thank you!

  • Why does my computer freeze when updateing if i have enough disk space and no disk repairs are needed?

I have problems updating my softwarebecause my computer freezes when it restarts to install. I have enough disk space and I checked for disk repairs and everthing is ok. Still can't update and not my cumputer is taking longer to turn on. There is an earth blinking then i get the apple logo blinking before it turns on and this takes close to 5 minutes.

When you say, "disk repairs" are you referiring to permissions or verifying the disk because clearly there's a problem.
Boot from your install disc, run Disk Utilty to "verify" and if necessary repair the startup disk. (Not Verify Disk Permissions).

  • KT6 Delta (MS-6590 V2) hangs @ Testing VGA BIOS

    Hiya,
My sons machine has been running extremely well for about 4 months or so but started playing up a couple of days ago - to put it simply, the display would corrupt, produce a chequerboarding (usually pink and green) effect and occasionally blank out altogether :(
Eventually, the machine refused to start at all - I checked the D-Bracket and it showed that the machine was hanging at the Testing VGA BIOS stage.
We replaced the motherboard and the machine is now fine. My question is simple really - the components that were used with the MSI board are now in use with the replacement board so that shows that they are OK so, what could cause the MSI board to hang at this stage ? Is it the board thats faulty ? It`s only about 5 months old and has performed flawlessly until now.

  • Computer freezes when I use the number keypad

When I use my number keypad it freezes the computer and I have to turn it off to be able to use it again.
I use a PowerMac G4 to interface with an instrument at work. Anyway, a while back I got a new Kensington wireless mouse and started having problems with the computer freezing up when I use the number keypad.
I thought it was the new mouse, but when I plugged back in the old mouse I still had the problem.
I thought maybe the keypad had gone bad on the keyboard because the light didn't illuminate when I pressed the "Num Loc" key. So, I got a new keyboard with a number keypad and it does the same thing.
I don't know what to do with it. Does anyone have any idea or suggestions to try. I'd really appreciate some help.
    Kim

Hi Kim, and a warm welcome to the forums!
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Computer freezes when importing or burning audio CD

I'm ready to take a hammer to my computer! EVERY time I attempt to import or burn a CD my computer freezes at some point. It's very erratic, may import none, one or some songs, very, very rarely a whole cd. Don't get any error messages and I am unable to CTRLALTDELETE as whole system is locked.
As I've bought a large amount of music from iTunes I don't wish to lose it or be limited to just listening on my iPod.
As I've wrestled with this problem for some time can anyone at all help?
Have run diagnostic test and everything appears okay.
    Brenda

Have downloaded latest iTunes - still problem persists. Attempted to burn disc - only got as far as "checking playlist" when system froze. CTRLALTDELETE always fails to respond when this happens - keyboard doesn't respond either.
Have run another CD diagnostics check immediately afterwards, and checked Event Viewer - perhaps this can help? Don't know why I get error message relating to Windows XP Professional as I don't have this system.

  • Computer freezes when I try to import a cd into itunes...

I just recently got a Macbook Pro, and I am having a problem when I try to import a cd that I burned previously. When I put in a cd the computer freezes and the cd won't play and Itunes will not work at all. I have to restart the computer to get anything to work. I burned the cd on a Windows computer, and the cd works fine there. The cd's I am using are brand new with no scratches. I don't think I should have to restart the computer every time I try to import a cd. I hope I can get some help on this matter.

I'm having the same problem, except the CD I last inserted will not eject. It gave me the option to force eject the CD and I did. But the CD didn't come out...and a message popped up saying it was successfully ejected. Now the little icon doesn't come up when I press the eject button and the computer says there is no CD in the drive but the CD is still in there. I have had this Mac for about 4 and 1/2 hours now.

  • Computer Freezes When Playing Certain DVD

I just bought my first Mac in the form of the new generation of Macbook Pros last week. There is one DVD that seems to always freeze in the same spot when playing in my computer. When I start playing from after that point, it plays normally for awhile and then freezes again. It freezes to the point that I can only shut down the computer to fix it because force quit does not work and I cannot get out of fullscreen mode. I just tried the DVD on a friend's Macbook that he bought in November and it played without any problems. Could this be a problem with the drive or is the DVD probably to blame? Any help would be greatly appreciated, including advice on closing the program without shutting down the computer.

    Same problem here. Some notes:
Has occurred on at least two different DVDs for me; both unscratched and playable without issue in other drives.
I believe the picture freezes first, then the sound freezes a few seconds later. Mouse can be moved, but movement is jerky, like the mouse position is being updated at 5fps.
Hard reboot only way out; I've let it sit 20+ minutes to see if it recovers, no luck.

  • Computer freeze when updating from OS 9.2 to 10.2

    Hi,
I have a grey/blue ibook 366Mhz purchased the summer of 2000. I'm trying to update to OS 10.2. So far, I've updated from 9.06 to 9.2.1 to 9.2.2 (the required sequence), updated the firmware to 4.1.7, and installed third party RAM. I bought the install discs (10.2)from ebay. They are white colored and should work, according to the help files, although the seller did not send me the third "tools" disk.
When I try to install 10.2, the computer freezes at startup. A grey screen with the apple logo appears, and then the screen freezes and splits.
The point of this upgrade is to use our Verizon internet service, which requires OS X. If there's a way around that requirement, it would be just as good.
Does this sound familiar to anyone. Thanks for any help you can offer,
    Andrew

    Andrew:
You apparently have an Upgrade Version, which requires that you have the previous version installed on the HDD. What you need is the Full Retail Version. Check the picture of the disks posted by ali brown by clicking here However, instead of upgrading to Jaguar, since you have to purchase new install disks anyway, I suggest that you consider upgrading to Panther, which is a lot more powerful and stable OS. Your computer will easily support Panther if it meets that other the minimum system requirements for Panther.
Panther is no longer available directly from Apple, but you can find the Full Retail Version of Panther, if you shop carefully, at online outlets like FastMac; HardcoreMac, AllMac etc. If you know what you are looking for, read all documentation carefully and ask questions of the seller, you may be able to get
    Panther on eBay.
I will probably contact the ebay seller, since he gave the impression that he was selling the full retail version.
I definitely think you should do so.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Cheers

  • My computer freezes when i try to restart from bootcamp. What's the problem?

I have a Macbook Pro (i think 2010 generation), that I had windows 7 installed on boot camp. Now I have Mac OS X Lion installed. I don't remember if I restarted from Windows 7 after installing Lion or not.
Now the problem is I want to restart from Windows 7. I can see it among the options when i restart, but when i click on it the computer freezes.
What is the problem and what could be the solution to it?
By the way I also have parallels 5 installed as well.

Does it happen with different iMovie projects or does it keep doing it with the same one? Might be a corrupt movie file.
Do you have iLife 11 on disc? If so you might try reinstalling iMovie and try it again, first without updating anything, and if that works then try updating and see if the problem comes back. It could also just be that iMovie is corrupt.

  • Computer freezes when trying to sync ipod touch

I recently upgraded my laptop to Windows 7 64 bit and I'm not sure if I had this problem. I have the 64 bit version of itunes downloaded and I got a new 32gb ipod touch for christmas today. I plugged it in and set it all up and when it goes to sync, it shows that it gets to the 5th song out of like 500? songs I have and my whole computer freezes. I have my itunes setup so that it gets my songs from my external hard drive. I don't know if that would be a problem by trying to send my songs from my hard drive to my computer and then to my ipod. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

i am having some success with my touch now by right clicking on the itunes icon and selecting, troubleshoot compatibility, troubleshoot program, program worked on earlier versions, then select, win vista service pack2. this is probably not a permenant fix but for the time being it seems to work. hope you have some joy with your setup. • 10.5.2 and Apple External Modem Dialup - computer freezes when dialing up

    Hi,
Many thanks in advance for your attention.
Since upgrading to OS 10.5.2, the computer freezes (the cursor freezes) each time I try to dial up to internet. The only way to unlock computer is to shut the power button off and start over.
I am using the Apple External Modem.
Had no problems before (10.5.1, 10.5, Tiger, etc.). So far I seemingly have no problems with any other app. Only when I try to connect (dialup) to the internet.
I did the usual repair and verify permissions before and after installation.
I did a repair and verify Disc (from the Install Disc) after these problems.
    Both reported no problems.
I also tried trashing Internet Connect prefs files in Home Library.
I see a lot of posts and looks for Wireless connection problems.
The only dialup solution I've read so far are people who went back to 10.5.1.

    Hi,
Found this as a suggestion on how to fix the 10.5.2 internet dialup problem, but it is so vaguely written, I have no idea what the tipster is talking about.
I assume the tipster means one types these commands in Terminal?
If someone can explain the following in English, I would be grateful.
I had problems sharing a dial-up (Modem) PPP connection. I want to use NAT for security reasons and found that only the first connection after reboot worked. Subsequent connects would fail due to NATD not rebinding the new PPP bindings. Restarting NATD fixed the problem. Luckily PPPD fires off some scripts in /etc/ppp depending on connection status. The following script restarts NATD after every successfull connect if you save it as /etc/ppp/ip-up (don't forget to make it executable):
    #!/bin/sh -
    N_P=`ps -uxc -U root | grep ' natd$' | awk '{ print $2 }'`
    if [ "$N_P" != "" ]; then
logger -i -t $0 "Sending SIGHUP to natd (PID $N_P)"
    kill -HUP $N_P
    fi
Yes, this meant to be run in the terminal.
Really, the poster expected that these commands would be saved in a sh script and executed that way.
Create a txt file and past those commands into it. It will need to be saved with execution permissions.
    What does it do?
    N_P=`ps -uxc -U root | grep ' natd$' | awk '{ print $2 }'`
This asks the system for a list of running processes (ps -uxc) where the user is root (system admin) and passes this list to grep (which filters the list looking for a process with the string 'natd$'. This passes a single line out of the process list to awk which simply prints the second item in the list.
The end result is that the procid (process id) for the natd process is stored in the variable N_P.
    Next -
    if [ "$N_P" != "" ]; then
logger -i -t $0 "Sending SIGHUP to natd (PID $N_P)"
    kill -HUP $N_P
    fi
This checks whether a natd process was found - $N_P not null string.
If a process was found - the logger command writes and entry to the system log and then the script tries to kill the process gently (kill -HUP).
This should clear the natd process which should restart if you try and dial again.
The script is not really vague - just needs a comment or two to make it understandable to those who are not Unix geeks.

  • My computer freezes when I connect my iPod

My iPod won't turn on, I've left it plugged in my iHome to charge for 4+ hours. After that didn't work I decided to plug it into my computer to do the restore feature. but when I plugged my iPod in, my computer freezes up. It stays that way and won't do anything. If I unplug the iPod my computer unfreezes.

I was having the same problem connecting to USB 1.1 on my PC. I installed A USB 2.0 adapter in my PC and plug the iPod into it. Now my PC does not freeze and the iPod works perfectly.
Not sure if this will solve your problem but it did mine.
