Computer freezes with iPod plugged in, songs show exclamation marks, etc...

HELP!!!
I've restored, re-loaded, re-installed, updated, etc. but nothing helps.
I plug in my 40gig iPod, iTunes finds it and starts uploading all my songs. Then, after a random period of time, the entire computer locks up. Mouse doesn't move, nothing. The only way to make the computer come back to life is to unplug the iPod.
For the indeterminate period of time that the iPod is plugged in and updating, when I check the list of songs already on the iPod, several of the tracks have exclamation marks in a dark circle next to them. These tracks work fine when played through iTunes, but not through the iPod.
I've run 'Chkdsk f: /F' several times, and it finds plenty of problems and errors.
It takes me over a month to reload all the songs onto my my iPod because it can't upload more than 500meg without freezing the computer up.
PLEASE HELP!

Having the same problem and judging by the other posts i've read so are alot of other ipod classic users. When I sync my ipod it gets up to about a 1000 songs then starts going really slow and i cannot eject so when i unplug it all the songs are gone and i need to restore ipod again.
I'm getting fed up with this problem i've rebooted my ipod over 20 times trying to fix this problem and i want to know what apple are going to do about it because so far it appears that they are sticking their hands in the sand and ignoring the problem.

  • Entire Computer Freezes When iPod plugged in..

    Hey Guys
When my fiance plugs her ipod into her USB port, it works fine for a few moments. Then the computer decides the slow down to the point it freezes. This does not happen with on either of my computers so I know its hers. I reinstalled itunes, did ipod update, got rid of any spyware or viruses, changed the USB port it was using and still no success! Restore is the only thing left but I don't think that will do much.
    Anyone else have any suggestions????

    Hmm..
Make sure no other programs are open while iTunes is, sometimes having too many open programs slows a computer down.
Nothing else should be connected to the computer when her iPod is.
Have you tried a diferent USB port?
If you have a firewire cable, have you tried that?
Does the computer freeze until you decide to shut it down or it freezes for a couple of minutes? The reason I ask is because when I connect my Nano to my computer, it freezes for about 5 mins searching for my Nano and then it shows in the iTunes' "Source" list.

  • Computer freezes with iPod

Ok, so I know there are a lot of questions like this, but I can't find any that are specifically like my problem. My iPod has been acting weird any way, but when I try to sync the iPod, the computer immediately freezes. But this is where mine is different. The computer doesn't stay frozen after you unplug the iPod. It immediately unfreezes and the cursor is in a different place. (If I moved the mouse.) So I know the computer is still responding, but it won't bring up iTunes or charge. I would like to back up my iPod so I could do a hard reset.... But, I can't sync it with the computer. So what do I do?  Or is there anything I can do? Please, I need suggestions. I've only had it since Christmas, so it's really not that old. Help! But I just thought of another thing. I think have updated iTunes twice before plugging my iPod in last. So I plugged the iPod in a couple of versions ago, but not untill two updates later. Could that be the cause?

ALso try another cable and USB port. Also see if it happens with another computer to help determine if you have a computer or iPod problem.

  • Computer freezes when I plug in Nano

Whenever I plug in my Nano into this computer, this computer freezes. The iPod screen looks like it's only charging, without the "Do Not Disconnect" screen. I have tried plugging in the iPod into two other computers, a PC and Mac, and it worked fine for both of them, "Do not disconnect" and all. However, I have tried almost everything on this computer. I have disabled all programs that load at start-up, I have reinstalled iTunes about 3 times, I have restored my iPod twice and formatted it once through the "My Computer" window and I have scanned for both spyware and viruses. I'm going absolutely insane over this whole thing, as nothing seems to be working and this just happened unexpectedly for no apparent reason.
If someone could help me, that would be VERY NICE.

You probably have a drive collision on your computer: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499
Be sure to only connect your iPod (to a rear USB port on your computer) keyboard and mouse, and disconnect all other USB devices, including printers, digital cameras, scanners, thumb drives, flash memory, external hard drivers, threshers, etc. prior to changing the drive letter. Also, if you are on a network, disconnect, and use a much higher drive letter like M or P or Z.
As for viruses, etc., make sure all of your antivirus/spyware software preferences are set not to scan iPods. If you are manually managing your music, or have enabled disk use on your iPod, you will also have to set it to not scan removable storage devices.

  • Songs + adapter + exclamation marks

Hi, a few days ago, I had to move alll of my songs from "My Computer" to an adapter. Well, as I expected, all of my songs had exclamation marks next to them. Today, I took 6+ hours to "restore" all of them. But when I unplugged the adapter, it all became exclamation marks again! Ugh! So then I deleted all of my songs and added them from the adapter. It worked, until I unplugged my adapter again. The problem is, I only have 2 USB plug-ins, one for my mouse, and one for anything else. Well I need to plug in my ipod connector/cord AND the adapter, but it's not possible. Help? Since I have all those exclamation marks, I officially have NO SONGS AT ALL ON MY IPOD. They do show on my iTunes, but since they're "relocated", I can't upload them.
Please help. I feel like I'm going to die, I already wasted a DAY doing this, and it's just.. VERY VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!

I had to move alll of my songs from "My Computer" to an adapter.
By "adaptor" I assume you mean an external hard drive? An "adaptor" is usually defined as +"a device for connecting pieces of equipment that cannot be connected directly."+ It's not a storage device.
Anyhow, if you are storing your music on an ext hard drive you must keep it connected at all times otherwise iTunes loses track of the songs files and hence the ! next to them.
You need a USB hub that will allow you to connect several USB devices into one USB port on your computer.

  • Restart of computer with iPod plugged in issue

    Hi,
Whenever I restart my Windows Vista computer with my iPod Classic plugged in via USB, the computer freezes and is unable to get past the DELL logo screen. Is there a known issue with this? When I have my USB flash drives plugged in, there is no problem with restarts.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
    James

the ipod is like a mini computer ... you should disconnected first before you restart ... also, restaring with ipod connected might get damaged cos of power changing up and down, so you're risking to damage the ipod. good luck.

  • Computer freezes whenever I plug ipod in...

Evrytime I plug in my ipod nano to sync it my computer compleatly stops and has to be restarted in order to do anything. I cannot even hit the sync button because it freezes before I can do anything. Please help, i am very frustrated and have a brand new ipod i cannot use! Thanks.

    I would see to reasons:
    - either a firewall on your computer freezes it for protection purposes every time a device is connected to it. Normally it should unfreeze after that, but it might be buggy in your case.
    - or your iPod is corrupt in a way that causes your computer to freeze. There are some "corrupted iPod repair tools", for example CopyTrans Doctor http://www.copytrans.net/doctor.php

  • Computer won't start with iPod plugged in

    Hey all,
Just got a brand new MacBook Pro and a 30 gig iPod. When I restart with the iPod plugged into the USB port, the computer sits at the white screen forever and doesn't boot into OS X until it is disconnected. How do I fix this? Thanks!

I don't know if this will fix the problem, but here it is:
    1. start the macbook up normally w/o the iPod plugged in.
    2. right after u hit the power button hold down the button combination "s" and "command"
    3. do not let go until the screen goes black and white text is on it. when the text stops moving there will be a prompt.
    4. type the following text WITHOUT QUOTES "fsck -f"
    5. then when it is done do that same thing again.
    6. then try to exit type the following text WITHOUT QUOTES "reboot"
    7. then try to reboot with the iPod connected
if that does not work take it into a apple store.

  • ITunes and Computer freezes when ipod is connected

When I connect my video ipod to my computer (dell desktop) the system freezes, as in it will not respond to mouse clicks and keyboard (but can still get to task manager). When I unplug the ipod it comes back to life. Programs always freeze, but sometimes I am able to navigate within windows without it freezing, but as soon as a program is brought up, my computer falls to its knees.
I have the latest version of iTunes, and updater v. 1.1, (but I have not been able to update the firmware yet from v 1.0).
The odd thing is last night I was able to download several gigs worth of music to it without incident. I then tried to load movies (they were in the wrong format, but I didn't know it at the time), and so in an effort to correct that I uninstalled itunes, the ipod drivers, and the ipod updater programs several times.
I cannot update the ipod firmware because the computer freezes when the ipod is plugged in, so the program freezes as well. Kind of a catch 22 situation.
I have been over the forums and help archives for about an hour and a half now and I have come up dry.
Windows XP does recognize the ipod when the cable is connected, and the ipod flashes, "Do not disconnect", which it is supposed to do.
I suspect this is drivers/software, but I have no idea where to go from here.
    Help?

    Hey!
That EXACT thing happened to me! 2 nights ago I'm downloading like crazy, all is well. I got on LimeWire and downloaded some videos and tried to put them on my iPod. Imported them into iTunes then tried to put em on my iPod and it completely wiped out all my songs! So I get back on, put the songs back in, and about half way through the update the thing freezes. I've re-installed everything, and have reset my iPod. Did you figure out what to do? Maybe your fix will fix my problem, too.
    Thank you!

I have tried reinstalling itunes and the ipod updater and restoring my ipod, but it only makes it so that itunes doesn't read my ipod. please help.

  • ITunes Freezes everytime iPod plug

Good day. My iTunes freezes everytime I plug my iPod classic into the pc. Can anyone help me with this problem? Thanks

I am having the same problem so I am going to bump your message...
iTunes freezes when I update my iPod and I get no error messages. It becomes unresponsive and I end up having to use Task Manager to close the program. When I reopen iTunes and try updating again it usually will but then I cannot disconnect the iPod because it says it is "being used by another application". I have to go into My Computer to eject the iPod. Also, after updating is complete the "Do Not Disconnect" continues to flash until the iPod is ejected. I have reinstalled iTunes, iPod updater, the whole bit and nothing has helped. I'm on Win XP.

  • ITunes freezing when iPod plugged in...

Recently I noticed that a vast majority of my music had dissapeared from my iPod, as if I had deleted it. I have no idea why such a thing woud happen, but I figured that it wasn't a problem since I could just plug it into my computer and sync it. However, after syncing several times, the music did not return to my iPod, and now iTunes freezes whenever I plug it in. Without it connected, iTunes appears to function perfectly fine, however when I connect my iPod it freezes immediately. A long time after unplugging it again, iTunes gives me a message about it not being recognized (or something to that effect). I have already tried deleting the contents of the Sync Services folder, which seemed to help many others with this problem. What can I do to fix this?

Your nano uses a totally different way to sync with iTunes than the touch. You need to follow the troubleshooting tips in this article about removing and reinstalling iTunes.

  • ITunes Freezes When iPod Plugged In. Please Help!

Two years ago I got a 2nd Gen. iPod nano. It worked for a while, but then it started freezing iTunes when I tried to sync it. So I got a 3rd gen. nano. It worked on one computer, then I wanted to put iTunes and start syncing it on another computer. So i transferred all of my songs to the other computer.Which was the same computer I synced my old iPod. I synced my new iPod once and all of my songs went to it. The next day I tried to sync it and as soon as the computer reconized my iPod, iTunes froze. As soon as I unplugged it it unfroze. That was what happened when I plugged my 2nd gen nano in. So now i cannot sync my new iPod because iTunes keeps freezing. Do you know what I could do to fix this problem??

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply, do you mean uninstall the updater software first, or iTunes?
Also, do you know what causes this problem? As you suggest using an earlier firmware, I'm guessing some aspect of a later version is to blame?
Any idea what version I should try?
    Thanks again!
    Simon.
