Computer freezes with iPod

Ok, so I know there are a lot of questions like this, but I can't find any that are specifically like my problem. My iPod has been acting weird any way, but when I try to sync the iPod, the computer immediately freezes. But this is where mine is different. The computer doesn't stay frozen after you unplug the iPod. It immediately unfreezes and the cursor is in a different place. (If I moved the mouse.) So I know the computer is still responding, but it won't bring up iTunes or charge. I would like to back up my iPod so I could do a hard reset.... But, I can't sync it with the computer. So what do I do?  Or is there anything I can do? Please, I need suggestions. I've only had it since Christmas, so it's really not that old. Help! But I just thought of another thing. I think have updated iTunes twice before plugging my iPod in last. So I plugged the iPod in a couple of versions ago, but not untill two updates later. Could that be the cause?

Maybe here:'
iTunes for Windows XP: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues
iTunes for Windows Vista or Windows 7: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues
I would try removing and reinstalling all the apple software
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
ALso try another cable and USB port. Also see if it happens with another computer to help determine if you have a computer or iPod problem.

  • Computer freezes with iPod plugged in, songs show exclamation marks, etc...

    HELP!!!
I've restored, re-loaded, re-installed, updated, etc. but nothing helps.
I plug in my 40gig iPod, iTunes finds it and starts uploading all my songs. Then, after a random period of time, the entire computer locks up. Mouse doesn't move, nothing. The only way to make the computer come back to life is to unplug the iPod.
For the indeterminate period of time that the iPod is plugged in and updating, when I check the list of songs already on the iPod, several of the tracks have exclamation marks in a dark circle next to them. These tracks work fine when played through iTunes, but not through the iPod.
I've run 'Chkdsk f: /F' several times, and it finds plenty of problems and errors.
It takes me over a month to reload all the songs onto my my iPod because it can't upload more than 500meg without freezing the computer up.
    PLEASE HELP!

Having the same problem and judging by the other posts i've read so are alot of other ipod classic users. When I sync my ipod it gets up to about a 1000 songs then starts going really slow and i cannot eject so when i unplug it all the songs are gone and i need to restore ipod again.
I'm getting fed up with this problem i've rebooted my ipod over 20 times trying to fix this problem and i want to know what apple are going to do about it because so far it appears that they are sticking their hands in the sand and ignoring the problem.

  • Entire Computer Freezes When iPod plugged in..

    Hey Guys
When my fiance plugs her ipod into her USB port, it works fine for a few moments. Then the computer decides the slow down to the point it freezes. This does not happen with on either of my computers so I know its hers. I reinstalled itunes, did ipod update, got rid of any spyware or viruses, changed the USB port it was using and still no success! Restore is the only thing left but I don't think that will do much.
    Anyone else have any suggestions????

    Hmm..
Make sure no other programs are open while iTunes is, sometimes having too many open programs slows a computer down.
Nothing else should be connected to the computer when her iPod is.
Have you tried a diferent USB port?
If you have a firewire cable, have you tried that?
Does the computer freeze until you decide to shut it down or it freezes for a couple of minutes? The reason I ask is because when I connect my Nano to my computer, it freezes for about 5 mins searching for my Nano and then it shows in the iTunes' "Source" list.

  • ITunes and Computer freezes when ipod is connected

When I connect my video ipod to my computer (dell desktop) the system freezes, as in it will not respond to mouse clicks and keyboard (but can still get to task manager). When I unplug the ipod it comes back to life. Programs always freeze, but sometimes I am able to navigate within windows without it freezing, but as soon as a program is brought up, my computer falls to its knees.
I have the latest version of iTunes, and updater v. 1.1, (but I have not been able to update the firmware yet from v 1.0).
The odd thing is last night I was able to download several gigs worth of music to it without incident. I then tried to load movies (they were in the wrong format, but I didn't know it at the time), and so in an effort to correct that I uninstalled itunes, the ipod drivers, and the ipod updater programs several times.
I cannot update the ipod firmware because the computer freezes when the ipod is plugged in, so the program freezes as well. Kind of a catch 22 situation.
I have been over the forums and help archives for about an hour and a half now and I have come up dry.
Windows XP does recognize the ipod when the cable is connected, and the ipod flashes, "Do not disconnect", which it is supposed to do.
I suspect this is drivers/software, but I have no idea where to go from here.
    Help?

    Hey!
That EXACT thing happened to me! 2 nights ago I'm downloading like crazy, all is well. I got on LimeWire and downloaded some videos and tried to put them on my iPod. Imported them into iTunes then tried to put em on my iPod and it completely wiped out all my songs! So I get back on, put the songs back in, and about half way through the update the thing freezes. I've re-installed everything, and have reset my iPod. Did you figure out what to do? Maybe your fix will fix my problem, too.
    Thank you!

  • My computer freezes with applications open

Whenever I have skype open and i'm video chatting, with safari pages open and microsoft word after a time, my computer freezes. it starts with the skype page (the video part of my friend) going dark and then all the other windows not being responsive. The audio is working still, as well as my video since they can see me well. This happened a few times alrready. Also, my computer just shut down twice already like this without warning. In order to unfreeze it, i need to force shut it down and turn it on again.

Open the Activity Monitor utility, go to the System Memory tab.
Towards the top of the window, click on "Real Mem," so it will sort the processes by how much memory are using.
Also refer to the pie chart below the list of processes - you want to see a fair amount of green. Just keep it under close observation when you have all of the said applications open.

  • Computer freezing with spinning wheel -- Heroku??

    Hi,
I'm having a couple of issues with my Mac desktop.
After it sits idle for more than an hour, it freezes.  At first the mouse doesn't respond.  Then, if I can get it moving, I get the spinning wheel that won't go away.  I have to end up turning it off, then back on for it to work.  I've had the computer for over 3 years and this just started happening about 2 weeks ago.
Yesterday I got an error message when using Safari -- "Heroku -- No app found".  I have no idea what this means.  Has something hijacked my computer? Strangely, I've been getting the same error message on my iPad lately!  Could it have something to do with iCloud sharing information on both??  Sorry for the broad questions, but I'm pretty clueless when it comes to Mac's.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

This forum category is for Older iPods, so I'm not sure how your post ended up here.  You may want to post another question, by going here first
    https://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa
and selecting the appropriate forun category, such as your Mac model or Mac OS X version.
I would do two tests.  Start up the Mac in Safe Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
Although some things will not work in Safe Mode, you can use Safari.  Does this problem happen in Safe Mode?  If it does not, there may be some system extension or background process running when you start up nornally, that is causing this problem.
To further narrow down the cause, start up normally and create a new user account in System Preferences Users & Groups pane.  The new user account can be Admin or Standard.  Log out and log in to the new user account (do not use Fast User Switching).  In the new user account, does this problem occur?  If it does, the cause is likely to be at the system level.  If does not, the cause is likely to be something that runs in the background, when you log in to your usual user account.
Doing these test will allow additional troubleshooting to be more focused.

  • Itunes Freezing with iPod sync

    Hi There,
So when I plug my iPod into the computer and load up itunes. I get prompted with a unauthorization of a few songs (due to an older itunes account; I merged with my girlfriend) Secondly, it then proceeds to update all the songs on my iPod(all 382 of them). When it gets to about number 56 it freezes.
I restored factory settings on the iPod, I unstalled (in the order listed in apple support, and then restalled the itunes.
Any ideas on how to fix this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a similar problem with my iPod however the max I've ever got to is 8 songs. I've looked alot into this as it's really frustrating because my iPod was an Xmas present I was really excited about. I still have no solution to the problem however I have found out that it's not the iPod it's iTunes. Not much help I know, but it's something

  • ITunes 7.0.1 freezes with iPod Video

    Hi,
i am using iTunes 7.0.1 with an iPod Video.
The installation works fine, but when ever i try to sync iTunes with my iPod it freezes.
I found no way to solve this problem. Only downgrade to iTunes 6.5. works (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=643810&tstart=15) but i want to use the new version of iTunes, because i also have a new iPod nano, who needs version 7 or higher!
    Has anyone a solution?
    Thanks, Helmut

    Hi,
i have found an answer for the problem.
Delet all data on my ipod an make a new
    syncronisation.
    After that everyting works fine.
I tried this but it still freezes even after "restoring" the ipod. Could it be that it wont sync with 17Gig of library on my computer (3 years old)?

  • 13 in macbook pro (early to mid 2011) : after the update, computer freezes with spinning wheel every 30 seconds first with safari and now with all the applications. I don't have any programs installed and still had good enough memory on the RAM.

After the update of my 13 in mac book pro (early to mid 2011) , it freezes every 30 seconds with the spinning wheel and now it just freezes. Ive never had this problem until I recently updated. Also, I just checked now for available update ( which there was one), the update would process till the last step and it shows it cannot be expanded? Now my computer wont even restart (just have a grey screen with a cursor). Can someone please tell me what the heck is going on with my computer?
I also checked the memory and it showed available memory was over 1.5 GB. I dont have any programms installed and do not have backup yet ( dont really need it anyways)
Problems: first with spinning wheel every 30 seconds and now whole computer just freezes when I restart, it only shows grey screen after the starting sound or it takes about 8 to 10 minutes to restart.
This ALL happened right after the update with google chrome crashing. I know my apple care plan expired so I cant even go to genius bar. Do you guys know how much it would cost to get it fixed ? Or any recommendations I can do to fix this?

    Try a smc reset:

  • Computer Freezes with X

I got my X-Fi Xtrememusic a few days ago. I installed it and it worked wonderfully. Today, my computer started freezing. I would play Battlefield 2 for about 20 minutes and it seemed fine, then all of a sudden it would just freeze and the sound would stop working. It would totally lock up and I would have to reboot. That's one problem. The other is when I reboot it, there's no sound! The only way to get sound again is to reinstall it. I never had any of these problems with the motherboard supplied soundcard. Please help!

BF2 is also my favorite game, and COD2. I've had the same exact problems with my Audigy 2 ZS and the support department hasn't been very helpfull, and nobody on the forums knows whats going on.
I've tried everything, different drivers and stuff. For me, music is great n' all but when I start COD 2, I can play for about 5-20 seconds then a high pitched screeching sound starts and my PC locks up and I have to reboot. I've tried old drivers, beta drivers, everything. I've tried a clean-sweep twice, and I think I'm going to try the solution with deleting a couple win32 files someone suggested. I'll tell you if it works though.

  • Itunes freezing with Ipod Touch on Windows 7x64 when setting up

    Hi,
I have an Ipod Touch 3G and a new Dell XPS16 Core I7 with Windows 7 x64. The Ipod cannot be Synced or restored properly. When connecting it it says there is an issue with the Ipod and it needs to be restored. The actul restore seems to go OK but after on the screen to setup new Ipod when I click OK Itunes just freezes. Seems like other people have similar problems.
I've put some troubleshooting steps and findings below.
1/ Though Itunes was corrups so uninstalled and reinstalled, no luck.
2/ Wanted new clean windows install anyway so formatted drive and reinstalled windows from scratch. Updated all drivers and BIOS to latest version. Installed latest Itunes. No other apps just Windows and Itunes. Same result. Itunes library is also empty so there is nothing to sync.
3/ Tried different Ipod (3rd Gen Ipod Nano). This works fine can restore and sync with no freezing issues.
4/ Tried Ipod Touch on 2 different PCs (one with XP 32 bit and one with Windows 7 32bit). On these machines the Ipod touch works fine.
It seems that there is either an issue with X64 Windows 7 and Ipod Touch 3G. Any suggestions.
If I go to Apple I'm sure they will say the Touch is fine because it works with 2 other PCs. If I go to Dell they will probably say the machine is OK because other Ipod works fine and I don't have issues with any other devices.

    Hi,
Thanks for the information. Will try this later and post if it helps. i have tried many many supposed fixes but no luck. At the moment I have clean Windows 7 (no bloatware) latest drivers, latest BIOS and only Itunes installed. Still does not work.
Spoke to Apple on the phone who said they think it's most likely USB drivers. I was using this Ipod with Windows 7 32bit RC for months without any such issues. As soon as i got the new laptop it has been non stop problems.
I did notice Apple have not updated the software since late October, 2 months ago. I have logged a call with Dell but I have a sinking feeling that that will send me back to Apple.
In my case I noticed when it freezes that Itunes is using a reasonable amount of CPU which does not change. In my case 13% of my 4 core I7. I have also noticed that other USB drives tend to lok up and not be accesible when Itunes freezes. Do you get similar symptoms?
My gut feeling is Itunes x64 has some issues. The Itunes App does not seem to be 64 bit either even when installing 64 bit version. May just be the drivers which are 64 bit. If we can find a few people with reproducable issues on different hardware I will forward this to Apple as I still have an open support ticket.

I can look at my ipod classic and navigate through the menu, but when I connect it to any computer, it freezes that computer and I have to disconnect it and restart the computer.  Any suggestions?.

Which model of iPod Classic are you using?

  • ITune v7.02 freezes with iPod Shuffle v2

I got my new iPod shuffle in the mail with much excitement. I setup everything fine, updated my shuffle to v1.0.1 and transfered my music to it. Unfortunately, iTunes now freezes after few seconds of opening up the application (CPU maxes out at 100%). It doesn't matter if my iPod is plugged in or not. It always freezes. Very, very disappointed with the quality of iTunes.

    Hey brumeux,
How did you install iTunes 7.0.2?
Was it a response to a prompt to update?
If so, did you disable any security software before the install?
If you answered yes, then no
    Remove iTunes and Quicktime
go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and download itunessetup.exe using the save option
Then disable security and install again
    Hope this helps,

  • Migrating iPhone to new host computer, shared with iPod

Up until now, the iPod was synched to the desktop machine, and the iPhone 3G was synched to the laptop. I need to migrate the iPhone over to the desktop, and remove iTunes from the laptop all together.
Both computers currently run Win XP Pro, and both are running the current version of iTunes (8.0.2). iPhone has been backed up, and all applications have been updated to current. iPhone currently has no music/videos on it (nor is there such in the laptop's iTunes library. There is much music on the desktop iTunes library, and I don't want to lose that library. Both versions of iTunes have been set up for manual syncing and manual organization of the library music. Lastly, iPhone syncs to my Exchange server at work using ActiveSync over the air - that is where the contacts, calendar, email, etc. come from.
How do I this without losing everything on the iPhone? I can't be the first person to have this problem, but very little is published on solving it. Didn't find an apps note from Apple, and found little of use in other online forums.
I want to keep my iPod (and my music library) on the desktop machine. I want to add my iPhone to that desktop machine, and make it its new sync home. I don't want to lose any of my applications or other data on the iPhone. I want to manually configure which device will get music - playlists are fine for this purpose, though I really haven't used them before.
Absolutely imperative that iPhone retains its ability to sync to my Exchange Server, as this is a primary business tool (and works very well!). I can't break that in the process.
What's the secret sauce for making this transition without breaking something? Thanks for any advice you may offer.

If your iPhone doesn't have any iTunes content that was transferred from the laptop, then you have nothing to be concerned about, and I assume that you purchased and downloaded all 3rd party apps via the App store on your iPhone only? If so, were you using the same iTunes account on your laptop that is being used on your desktop?
The sync process for iTunes content is a one way transfer process only - from your computer to your iPhone. No matter what you select or don't select for your iPhone or iPod sync preferences with iTunes on different computers, your iTunes library on the computer is not touched by the sync process.
An iPod and an iPhone synced with iTunes on different computers can have different sync preferences with iTunes on each computer. And an iPod and iPhone synced with an iTunes library on the same computer can have different sync preferences.
In regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced with an iTunes library on a single computer only. When selecting iTunes content on another computer to be transferred to an iPhone, all iTunes content on the iPhone that was transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPhone first, but the iTunes library on your computer can't be erased via the sync process with an iPod or iPhone. This does not completely erase the entire iPhone.
The email account or accounts on your iPhone will not be touched or affected by syncing your iPhone with iTunes on your Desktop. If you are syncing contact info and calendar events over the air with your Exchange account on your iPhone, you won't have the option to sync direct with a supported application on your Desktop for this data under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences.
If for some reason your 3rd party apps available on your iPhone are lost when syncing with iTunes on your Desktop, you can re-download all purchased apps with iTunes on your Desktop without being charged again as long as you use the same iTunes account to re-download the apps that was used to purchase the apps originally.
You will get a warning message that your iPhone has been synced with iTunes on a different computer, but you should have the option to make your selections under the various tabs for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes on your Desktop.
