Computer freezing up and slow

my Mac Pro keeps freezin up, taking about 15 seconds to type on letter and it displays a round rainbow figure when I try to click out of things.
Any ideas how to clean up my computer??
Thanks.

Simple things to try first:
Try doing a smc reset.
Boot from your installer dvd and try to repair your boot drive with Disk Utilities.
Boot in safe mode and then reboot normally.
If it's still having problems, try logging into another account and see how it behaves.

hello; i just erased the post i started with, because my status has changed. i searched in the firefox folder and found the uninstall folder, and this time, uninstall worked perfectly, and it gave me an option to save my personal info! YAY! i installed ff 3.6.24 without a hitch; FF is Baaaaaack!
However, I did get a window saying my computer doesn't have enough resources for the latest version of 8, but that I should install the latest compatible version of firefox; which version would that be, I wonder? It takes me to the same page with the ff 3.6.24 downloads. I already have that now.
I am going to mark this as solved; thank you cor-el for helping me with this problem and sticking with me as i whined and moaned, and tried to get the courage to "just do it!"

  • Computer freezing up and telling me its the operating system?

I've rencently encountered a problem with my computer (after just installing a new game patch, but the game company said they havn't had any people complaing about it for the mac version). Every once in awhile my computer's touch pad would stop working, then a few minutes later the keyboard and sound, then the entire thing would freeze up and the screen would go gray and a message would pop up with the power button symbol behind it. It would say "Encountered a error with Mac OSX, please press restart or hold down the power button" which I did. It first only did it about once a hour or so, but now its so frequent, the error message would pop up before I could even log in. I've already tried reinstalling Mac OSX, but it didnt help any. If anyone could give me any advice on this issue at all that would be great, but I'm considering calling Apple support tommorrow. Thanks!

Have had problem for a few weeks, I have already checked with HP tools hard drive and video display both check out, and have I restored the system back to its orginal version by using partion drive and, none seems to help get rid of the freezing and rebooting of PC. Any thought what need to look at?

  • Computer freezes up and every operation says "not responding?"

My HP Pavilion windows Vista Home Premium keeps freezing up on me and the windows are frequently "not responding."
It is becoming annoying every time I turn on the computer and it is also running slow.  What could be the problem?

Are you still able to move the mouse around? Try opening the task manager and look at your ram and cpu levels when this happens.

  • Hanging / Freezing problem and slow start up

    Problems:
    It starts up very slowly
It hang / freeze all the time
More details about the hanging problem:
All the sudden it will stop responding for a couple of minutes, I would do right or left click (via the build in notebook mouse) but nothing would happen. Then after a little while the “Right click” would start responding, but the “left click” would still be hanging, as when you click and hold it (although I am not even clicking on it at that moment). For instance, to clear up what happens:
While I’m on a page using the browser, or using M.S Word, as described earlier it will hang, then if I click the right click it will show the proper list (so at that moment the right click is working), but if I click the left click it won’t respond. And although I take my fingers off the 2 buttons (the built in mouse’s right and left clicks buttons) and just move the mouse (WITHOUT clicking right or left), it will highlight the whole text in the browser or in the Word file and start scrolling up and down. It is exactly as when you click and hold the left click then move the mouse up and down to highlight something, although as I explained above I am not clicking or holding anything, I am just moving the mouse up and down. Plus the left click won’t response / clicks, so if I want to close the browser by left click on the (X) at the corner it won’t click it.
I then press (alt + ctrl + delete), the Task Manager comes up but I can’t end the task because I can’t click left on anything. However, the whole system collapse and all I can do is to wait until the mouse stop hanging and back to response (this takes approximately 15+ minutes every single time it happens).
    Technical support:
The first time I called HP technical support, the technician suggested that my hard drive has to be replaced, I wasn’t satisfied with her conclusion. I called again and I spoke to another HP technician, he instructed me to do both (quick test) on the hard drive and it “passed” showing that it is in a good condition. Then he instructed me to do “intensive test” which takes about 3 hours, after 3 hours the hard drive again “passed” but my Windows was damaged! I couldn’t access Windows 7 no more, and when I start it, it takes me to a black screen and requests the Windows CD.
I’ve got all my data in the notebook so I had to recover it but I had no access to Windows to do that, I called HP support again and the technician told me that she can’t help me! I’ve got to find an IT person who can recover the data for me and all HP can do is to send me the Windows 7 CD so I can reinstall my Windows.
As HP won’t help, I went to an IT person who recovered my data and he managed to reinstall Windows on my notebook. Now while I’m still busy installing programs in order to get back up and running, thinking that the problem is resolved, but the same 2 problems I’ve explained above are back, starting up slowly and hanging.
If any of HP technical support team is reading this PLEASE HELP URGENTLY! Could you please arrange a technician to contact me ASAP in order to really figure out where is the problem (is it the Windows, or the hard drive, or the mouse or maybe something else) and arrange the repair accordingly.  (I’ve purchased from HP the onsite 3 years care pack warranty).
As I explained above I’ve done as the HP technicians instructed me, yet the problems still exist. I use my notebook for business I can’t afford to stay without pc for longer time, installing and reinstalling my Windows and ALL programs and data over and over again is because of this guessing game.

  • Starting problems, computer freezes, keyboard and mouse stop working

Hi can anyone help? My powerbook has just stopped working, rarely starts, when it does keyboard and mouse stop working after a while or even before i am able to login. At one point I was getting a grey screen with the words, memory access invalid???? Please help...
    powerbook G4

power surge could have damaged something inside, or it maybe unrelated to the problem.
PowerBook can get hot if there is some short circuit inside and power flow is disrupted, also it's possible that the fans are not working properly.
as a guess, it is likely either hard drive or logic board problem.

  • When I open my computer and use it for a period of time it freezes up and it say Mozilla Firefox is not responding. What should I do with this?

This happened several times already that my computer freezes up and it says Mozilla Firefox is not responding. When this happen it takes a long time before I can use my computer, I would say one hour or sometimes it takes 2 hours. When it takes like 30 minutes of freezing up what I do is I force the computer to shut down by pressing start button.
And Ihttps://support.mozilla.com/media/img/markup/page_link.png wait for 3 to 5 minutes than I press the start button again to open the computer. When computer open up the Toshiba starts loading up all files after that I can use the computer for a while. I don't if there's something wrong with my computer or something else. I have Window Vista home premium.
    Please help.
    Thanks

Apple recommend calibrating the battery when you buy a new Macbook and then every few months, or monthly if it used on mains all the time. This, as Apple says is to keep the battery operating at maximum efficiency. When the battery discharges and shuts the macbook down, it still has reserve power for a good number of hours. There is also a logic board battery to hold various settings.
I rather think I will take Apples advice on using their equipment not yours, but I would be intrigued to discover what is it you know that Apple doesnt about its batteries?

When I have documents open and I walk away for a few minutes, when I come back and resume working, my computer freezes up and the little pinwheel starts spinning.  I literally have to unplug it to get out of this frozen state.  This has been getting progressively worse over the past three months.  I recently took it into the Genius Bar and they could not find anything wrong.  They told me to add more memory, which I did.  However, the problem persists. Do you know why my computer would freeze up after the screen has had no activity for just a few minutes?  My screen saver is set for an hour so I know this is not the problem.

What kind of documents? Office? iWork? Text Edit? What version?
What settings do you have in regards to power saver and/or screen saver?
For these kinds of system glitches I always recommend installing and running Onyx 'Automation'. If that does not work you should reinstall the offending software, if possible.

  • Computer freezes after connecting zen mi

I formated my computer about a week ago and I didn't connect my micro to computer since then.
But today I install everything that is on CD that came with zen micro and when I plug USB cable ito micro the computer freezes. And I mean FREEZES, I have to reset it because the mouse and anything else is not working.
I've tried it on another computer and it was recognized without problems. So the problem is in my computer.
I have .02.05 firmware on the player.
    Did anyone have this problem?

A freezing PC suggests a serious hardware and/or software problem. As it works on another PC obviously the Micro isn't directly at fault, although it could be a USB incompatibility with this PC. USB incompatibilities are always a pain to diagnose, so if you don't mind spending a little extra money you might find a PCI USB card a quick solution. Make sure to get a known good card i.e. Belkin or Adaptec.
Failing this, and if you don't want to get a PCI USB card just yet, there's lots of connection troubleshooting advice here in the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net.

Any time I try to upload pictures, whether on Facebook, or Craig's List, or on anything else, my computer freezes up and has to be force quit. Anyone else have this problem??

Same problem. Im running on a sony vaio and everything just stops working until i unplug my ipod. I'm really getting annoyed with this. I even tried running it through winamp, and that froze even worse. Im able to close all the windows and whatnot, but when i try to terminate an application through task manager, it doesnt go away until i unplug my ipod, meaning i cant restart itunes without unplugging my ipod. then i unplug and it works fine. then i plug back in and it freezes up again!

  • My HP p6000 freezes up and refuses to go online.

I have a p6000 series that has suddenly decided to freeze up and not go back online after a short period of being turned on.  I've taken it twice to my computer guy and he has no trouble, even leaving it on for 3 hours.  We recently upgraded our internet, but the ISP checks out and all of our wireless devices work fine.  What do I check now?  Perhaps our computer can't handle the upgrade?

I understand that your desktop computer freezes up and refuses to go online after an upgrade. What version of operating system did your computer have installed before upgrading to Windows 7? Did you upgrade any hardware components on your computer before it started to freeze up?
In the meantime, I recommend following the steps in this document on Computer Locks Up or Freezes (Windows 7), as well as Troubleshooting your wireless network and Internet connection (Windows 7). This should help further diagnose the issue with your network connection as well as preventing further lock-ups on your computer.
I would also encourage you to post your product number for your computer. Below is a is an HP Support document that will demonstrate how to find your computer's product number.

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.
Memory in the MacBook Air is not upgradable. If that's what you have, you should restore the previous system from a backup, or replace the machine. Ask if you need guidance.
The Etrecheck report clearly shows that SylvieRose has a Macbook Pro, not a Macbook Air and that there are only 2 GB  RAM installed.  The Etrecheck report can be very informative if one takes the time to examine it.

Running mac os x version 10.6.8

Easiest way is to have an external drive to which you copy the things you store like pictures, movies, and music
which take up a lot of space. Then delete them fron the main drive and clean it up with one of the maintenance utilities. You can readily access the external drive's contents whenever you wish.

  • Slow boot up and computer freezes...???

hey all. This problem just started this week. I think it might be due to the 10.4.10 update. anyway, i noticed that the boot up time is considerably slow now. during startup w/ the gray screen and the apple logo in darker gray, that little clock face with it blinking clockwise shows up below the apple logo. this normally happens when i upgrade the software... but its happening everytime i boot up the computer.
also, the computer freezes up... once when i was watching a movie on quicktime and i moved the mouse to see how much time left in the movie. the other time, when i was listening to music andi moved the mouse. the screen gets darker, but not totally black, like the computer is saving power and a message saying that i have to hold the power button down for at least 5 seconds to turn off the computer. the message is in two other languages. this happened in a period of two days....
any idea on what could be the problem and how i go about solving it??
    thanks!

    Hello,
First thing that comes to mind is... how much free hard drive space do you have? To view this information, open a Finder window. The information is the bottom of the window. Never allow the drive to have less than 15% free hard drive space because that will slow down your Mac faster then anything else.
Ok... it's freezing up on you. Grab your system restore disk(s). Make sure your Mac is turned off. Now, press the power button, hold down the C key and insert the restore disk all at the same time. Let go off the C key when you see the Apple logo on your screen. Now, by default the Installer window will open. Quit the Installer from the Menu and instead click Utilities/Disk Utility. When DU opens, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left. Then click Verify. If DU reports errors on the drive, click Repair. Now, while you have DU open, also, Repair Disk Permissions.
Get Onyx. It's a great disk FREE utility and can fix a myriad of problems. You can download it right from the Apple site here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/onyx.html
The message you are seeing is called a "kernel panic" and you can find information for that here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25392
