Computer froze after tring to delete photos accidentally dropped onto desktop

I accidentally dropped 2000 photos onto my desktop. This caused the computer to freeze. I turned it off then back on & was able to start sending them one by one to the trash (took a very long time). Thought it would be easier to select all and drag them to the trash & froze the computer again. I left it on overnight hoping it would start resolve it's self- it did not. Turned it off then back on- nothing. What should I do? Please, help! Thank you.

Try using TrashIt!.
Also read the following if that doesn't work.
Solving Trash Problems
But I seem to recall other posts with people doing what you did, i.e., move files from a GoFlex external into the trash and having problems deleting them.
One thing to check that may indicate there's going to be problems here.  If those files came from your external and are now in the trash, if you unmount the external, are they still in the trash?  If not then remount the external and the files should be deleteable.  If they remain after you unmounted the external I suspect there's going to be some problems removing these "ghost" files.

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.

  • Computer froze; after reboot: "No AirPort card installed."

I was online checking email, doing nothing out of the ordinary, when all of a sudden my computer froze. There was no spinning wheel; the computer was completely unresponsive. I manually powered it off, and when I turned it back on and found that I could not connect to the internet. I clicked the AirPort icon and the dropdown said "No AirPort card installed."
I reset the PRAM. I did an SMC reset. I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled OS X. I did both the standard and extended Apple Hardware Tests and there was "No trouble found."
In System Profiler, under Network > AirPort, the various Software Versions are listed. However, AirPort is not listed under Network > Active Services. In System Preferences > Network, AirPort is "Off" and when I attempt to turn it on, nothing happens. If I delete the AiPort connection and try to add a new one, "AirPort" does not appear in the interface dropdown menu. I tried turning AirPort on via Terminal using the command "sudo ifconfig en1 up" and received the message "ifconfig: interface en1 does not exist".
At this point it seems as though the AirPort card has crapped out, but if it did indeed go bad, why does it not show up in Apple Hardware Test? Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

As I understand it, the SMC and PRAM are actual chips on the logic board, and the resets restore them to their original factory values. That's about all I know to say about them since I'm not an IT person and have very little troubleshooting experience myself.
I'm not familiar with the term NIC. Is this the same as the airport card?
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/13-MacBook-Airport-Card-p-17152.html
If so, it should be easy to locate on the logic board as it's pretty large. I don't know if the same card is used in both of your 13" Macs or not--You would need to research that for yourself. However, it seems like in many cases, replacing the card didn't seem to work, although you could always inspect it to be sure the antenna is well seated. I'm not familiar with the 13" card, but the card in my 17" MBP actually has 2 antennas.
Both PowerBook Medic and ifixit have step by step guides for disassembling Macs and replacing parts. You may be able to find the information you want there.
Just finished looking through the long thread, and it looks like every possible solution that I could think of has been tried.
As for testing the hardware, many people have recommended Tech Tool Pro:
    http://www.micromat.com/
You also should have the Apple Hardware test on one of your original system discs, and if you had Applecare, a Tech Tool Deluxe disc with a hardware test. I'm not sure, but it may be that if you purchased Applecare and got Tech Tool Deluxe, you may be able to buy Tech Tool Pro at a discount.
Apple Stores also have a hardware test they can run from their store feed if you have access to one.
If you do decide to resort to a USB card, here's one that works pretty well:

  • Transfer Catalog to new computer after I've deleted photos on old

I still use Photoshop Elements 5.0 since it does the basic things I need, although I could upgrade if necessary. My problem is that I want to transfer the CATALOG from my old XP computer to my new Win7 but I mistakenly deleted the photos (not the catalog) from my XP already! The photos are on my new computer but most of the catalog is not. Can I back up the catalog only, restore it to my new computer, and have it reconnect to the photos on my new computer? I have already seen the help articles on “Use Backup, Restore to move catalog” and “Common catalog upgrade issues”, but I don’t want to backup and restore the catalog and get everything messed up! BTW, although all the photos are on my new computer, the Win7 catalog references only August 2010 and May 2011-July 2012; the XP catalog contains references from July 2007-April 2011 (August 2010 is on both).

Hi again, Ken. Thanks for all your help with this issue. I wanted to test my various ideas before responding to your latest message.
Since I had a conglomeration of different images and captions on each computer, I defined what was where for each folder. All photos were on my new computer, some captioned many not, but most were not in a PSE catalog. Some but not all photos were on my old computer after I loaded photos from an incomplete flash drive copy, either captioned or not. I was afraid to do any backup and restores in case I messed things up further.
Since I had more complete files on my new computer, I decided to work with it instead of backing up and restoring from my old. I decided to start with my new computer to “Get Photos” from folders not in a catalog; that includes most of my photos. I tested these depending on whether or not they were captioned and whether or not they were already in the catalog. I created a matrix to determine how to handle each “type” of folder: HD only, HD captioned, PSE only, PSE captioned, and various combinations. Don’t try to parse this! I tested each type of folder to determine what I had to do for each and made notes so I can complete the job as time permits.
Soon I will perform a full backup. When I have “completed” the restoration task, I should be able to do an incremental backup and have everything on a 16GB flash drive, right?
Yes, complicated, but I have learned a LOT about working with Photoshop Elements, and your comments have helped me with that. So, thanks for your attention to my problem. I still have a bunch of work to do, but I think I know what I’m doing now. At this point I can delete all photos and catalogs from my old computer (a 2005 Dell Inspiron 6000) and give it to a friend whose computer is even older (a 1998 or older computer that is barely operational).
    Again, thanks for your help!

  • Computer Froze After Installing Mavericks

I just bought a refurbished 2013 MacBook Pro and immediately installed Mavericks.  After some problems with the install, it finally rebooted and prompted me to set up iCloud.  It would not recognize my password, and when I hit "Forgot?" it froze.  Now I am unable to reboot or force close.  Any advice?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • After PDF creation, deleted folder(s) reappear on desktop

Has anyone had the following issue with Adobe X?  If so, did you find a solution?
After I create a PDF from the internet, old folders that I have deleted from my desktop reappear.  For example, when I pay bills online, I create a PDF of the receipt and save it in my "bill receipts" folder, which is a few layers from the desktop (i.e., desktop -> household stuff -> bill receipts).  After the newly created PDF is saved in the correct folder an older folder that had been long deleted and/or moved to another folder (for archiving purposes) reappears on my desktop.  This folder is always empty, but it is there.  Granted, this issue does not affect the ability of Acrobat X to function, however, it is a minor annoyance and I would like to get it fixed.
Have you (the reader) had this issue with Adobe X before?  If so, what was your solution?
    OS:  Windows 7, 64-bit
    Acrobat X: 10.0.2
    Thank you!

Deleting a few PDFs by itself cannot

To delete photos and videos from your device
To delete synced photos and videos
In iTunes, select the device icon in the Devices list on the left. Click the Photos tab in the resulting window.
    Choose "Sync photos from."
On a Mac, choose iPhoto or Aperture from the pop-up menu.
On a Windows PC, choose Photoshop Album or Photoshop Elements from the pop-up menu.

I updated to iOS7 and my deleted photos came back.  How do I make sure this doesn't happen again?  I want to get rid of the ones I already got rid of, but if they just keep coming back that will be a waste of time.
    Can anyone help?
When I sync with itunes, the photos sections says I am syncing with my iphone, so I assume that anything I physically delete from my iphone should not be showing up again.  Right?
    Thanks in advance.
    CM
    PS- I don't use iphoto.

Is that really how sync works?
If you read this, http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4236  and this http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1314  they don't actually make how sync works very clear.  I had thought that syncing my device to itunes would allow I tunes to copy what was currently on my phone so that I could restore that information when needed ie if your phone dies and you need to do a clean install of the iOS system, you always have what is currently on your phone saved in Itunes.
    Specifically reading this:

What you seem to be saying is that iTunes saves every contact, message, photo etc and when you click sync, it reuploads things that you deleted?  This seems like it should work the opposite.  Make a mirror image of my iPhone on my computer, not make a mirror image of my computer onto my iPhone.  You delete things for a reason.
Help- anyone else?  Is razmee209 right?

  • Adding and deleting photos INDIVIDUALLY using iPhone 3GS

    Hi,
Is it possible to add (and then delete) photos from iPhoto onto iPhone 3GS INDIVIDUALLY?
I have all my photos filed neatly away in albums, but most of the time I don't want the entire album to be synced across to my iPhone....only the best photos. I need to keep what free memory space I have available.
I can't seem to even find an 'Edit' feature on the iPhone and I'm finding the whole thing to be very frustrating.
Can anyone provide any suggestions?? Thanks.

    No you cannot.
I make a folder/album called iphone and put everything I want on the iphone in this folder/album.

  • I have many photos that were on my computer via Elements 11.  I had work done on my computer and Elements 11 was deleted.  I was told that after loading

How do I get old photos from Elements #11 to my new Elements #12?  I had work done on my computer and although I have about 3000 photos from Elements #11, when this work was done Elements #11 was deleted.  So I have these photos on my hard drive, so what do I do to get these photos assiged to my new Elements #12?

Winston Winston, I figured it out!  I am so excited!
    Thanks for all your help!
First I reset my photo stream.
I realized after going to my photo stream there were actually no pictures in it.  I thought I had it all set up right but what I actually had was a file called photo stream in my documents I "sort of attached" that file to the actual photo stream, which at times showed photo's in the photo stream.
When I realized there was really no photos in the actual photo stream, through iCloud, I went to iCloud.com and looked up how to add photos to photo stream manually from my PC.
I am in the process of adding all my photo at the moment and I am so excited each time a new photo appears on my TV through Apple TV.
    Thanks for your patience

  • I have 2 photo books in iPhoto. Is there some way of storing them elsewhere on my computer so that they don't get accidentally deleted?

I have 2 photo books in iPhoto. Is there some way of storing them elsewhere on my computer so that they don't get accidentally deleted?

Yes.  This tutorial describes how to go about it: #9a - Archiving an iPhoto 7(08)/8(09)/9(11) Book for Editing and/or Ordering at a Later Date. For future books I suggest you start out with a new library and copy the needed photos to it from your current library with iPhoto Library Manager .

  • I delete photos from iPhoto but after backing up my computer they are back! How do I stop that?

I delete photos from iPhoto but when I back up my computer the library rebuilds them!

After I do a backup it rebuilds the iPhoto.
How do you back up and what is the "it" that rebuilds iphoto? Do you mean this process of arching/deleting? It may have damaged your Library.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
Going forward: another way of archiving:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager
