Computer froze before could burn backup and lost all purchases

Yikes - my computer froze as I was getting ready to burn a back-up CD for all my purchases from yesterday and now when I try and play any of the 40 songs I bought i get an error message saying that the file is not found. Does anyone know how I can restore the song files without having to repurchase everything?

Take a look here for some tips on how to look for the missing tracks. If you can't find them and don't have your tracks on an iPod, you're probably out of luck and will need to repurchase your tracks.
You can try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service and explaining what happened. Reportedly in some cases Apple has allowed redownloading on a one-time basis, but don't count on it.

The real question is what are you doing at all? This is one of the most basic iPhone functions. Read Chapter 4 of the iPhone User Guide. While you're at it, scan the rest of it.

You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

Have you not backed up or transferred your movies to your computer at any point before you dropped your old iPad?
If the only copy of these movies was on the old iPad, and that iPad is now gone, then so are the movies that were on it.

You either need to run a disk repair program on the hard disk, or reinstall the OS on that drive. Both of there require a recovery partition or a Mac OS X install disk.

Sounds like you opened a new account using a new Apple ID. This is the only way you would lose purchases because past pirchasea are always tied to the ID that they were purchased under.

You could try to go to the Appstore on your iPhone, go to 'Updates', select 'Purchased'. IOS 5.0x is required.
This should show all your purchases and allows you to download them. Swipe on a program to delete it from the list if you don't want it listed anymore.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod/iphone/ipad: File>Transfer Purchases

If the application supported auto-save, yes, if not, then no.
If you were creating a mail message, it might be in the drafts folder of the e-mail program.
What evidence do you have the computer restarted itself? Did the Apple logo come up?

From your backup that is in iTunes or in iCloud or resync them from your computer.

Be careful, when you connect the iPhone to your mac, unless you have saved the photos. Synced photos may easily be accidentally deleted by syncing again. And do not enable iCloud Photo Library (Beta), that will erase synced photos as well. Synced Photos are not included in the device backups.
Set your iTunes Preferences to "Devices > Prevent iPos, iPhones, iPads from syncing automatically". Otherwise iTunes may launch and sync your iPhone with an empty iPhoto library the moment you connect it.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to sync the synced photos back. Apple recommends to mail them back, but that would be a lot of clicking (iTunes: Syncing photos - Apple Support). You could also share them to a Shared Album, but a third party app like TD recommended, will be better.

Backup do not contaiuns music or apps, you will either need to resync them from your itunes computer, or you can go to purchase history in itunes or app store app and go to purchase history and redownload them.
