Computer Froze, lost half of songs..or did i?

Ok so heres my problem. My ipod was connected to my computer, not syncing, just charging when my computer froze for 5 seconds or so. When it came back, i discovered that I lost half of my songs (i had around 900 now i only have 400).
So i naturally thought okay, i guess i just lost them, time to reload them. But heres the thing. At the main itunes menu when my ipod is connected, it has that little bar showing how much each media (audio, video, pics etc.) is taking up space.
Mine use to be pretty much all covered in blue (music) but now its split in half. it is half blue and half orange ( i assume thats the stuff i lost but it wasnt really "lost".
None of it is showing up on my ipod so i cant reload the songs because almost all of my memory is taken up by my remaining songs and this mysterious "other (orange)".
So before I completly reload my ipod, is there anyway i can retrieve my songs? I know its there because its still taking up memory in my ipod.
i have an ipod nano 4th gen 8gb that i've been using for 3 months.
thanks for any advice! id really appriciate help

Sounds like the iPod data base has a corruption so it will probably need to be restored, see how to restore the iPod to factory settings which will erase the iPods contents and reclaim the used space.
As for retrieving the songs before you do this, there are various programs that can transfer music from iPod to computer but they all require that the music is readable on the iPod. In your case, if the data base is corrupted this may not be the case.
Yamipod is one such program (and this program also has a repair tool for the iPod also which may be of help).

  • After transferring my itunes library to a new computer, i lost half of my music!  how do i get it back

i recently had to transfer my itunes library to a new computer, i lost half of my music!!  how can i get it back?

You obviously didn't transfer all music.
Following the instructions included with this link will transfer your iTunes library as is from one computer to another.

  • After I had to reformat my computer I lost all the songs from my library.

After I had to reformat my hard drive I lost all of the songs from my library. All of the cds that I had loaded to my computer previously were also wiped clean. I had of course put them on my ipod so I was wondering if there was a way I could get all of that music back onto my computer.

Using iTunes your iTunes Music Store songs can be transferred back to computer. For other songs you have to use another program. Many are available online or in some stores.

  • Backing up my iphone - onto new computer - so I lose all songs I did not purchase on itunes? If I copied CDs into itunes on an old computer that I don't have access to anymore and I upgrade my software to 5.0 I lose anything not on the new computer itune?

So my home computer decided to quit... I am trying to start using my work computer more now. I have itunes with a library of only 150 songs. My iphone has over 550 songs. Even after I sync my phone to my new computer and mark items purchased to be sync it doesn't increase on itunes. I know I've purchased songs on my iphone so that is my first problem...
Next, at home I copied CDs onto itunes which I sync'd onto my iphone. Am I right that I will lose all these songs now when I update my software?
    To summarize:
I have no way to back up songs that were not purchased on itunes?
How do I sync my iphone purchases into itunes correctly (since it isn't working now)
Will I lose content from my iphone, if it doesn't show up on itunes before I update my software to 5.0?
    Am I making sense?

iOS: How to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Since your updating from iOS 4 to iOS 6, you will most likely lose your songs, but if songs were purchased from iTunes, you can try this:
Downloading past purchases from App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
You can redownload from iTunes on your iTouch, if running iOS 5 or better.

  • I have pages and now I have lost half my documents where did they go and how do I get them back

I have an IPad and use Pages.  Now half of my documents are gone.  Where did they go and how do I get them back.

If you backup your iPad, then the documents should be in your backup. If you have important documents in any app, you should backup very frequently in the event that something happens so that you can restore them from the backup.
If you use iOS file sharing with iTunes, then the documents might be in your iTunes library.
If you use iCloud with Pages, check in iCloud, com and see if they appear in there. I don't think it is likely that they will be there, if they disappeared from the iPad, but it is worth a try anyway.
In the event that this is some software glitch, try closing the Pages app, reboot the iPad and then launch Pages again.
Tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the Pages icon. Tap the home button twice.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If you don't backup, don't use iOS file sharing or don't use iCloud, then most likely your files are gone and you will not be able to retrieve them.

  • I connected my iPod to my new computer and only half the songs transfer.

How do i move all the songs that were on my iPod to the new computer?

Are they all from iTunes or CD's? Some of the songs from iTunes may have still DRM on them, and thus, may not transfer.
It may also be a few other items--Windows 7 may have issues with your iTunes, for example--and someone else may have thoughts that I don't right now.
Hang in there...we'll find an answer!

  • Ipod suddenly holds half the songs it did

    Hi!
I have a 4 GB 3rd generation Nano and I've had it since July and it has worked perfectly until now. My hard drive crashed last week, so when I got it up and working again I downloaded the latest verision of iTunes and loaded a bunch of cds onto it. This evening I emptied my iPod to put the new music on there. Where before it held 900+ songs, after putting the new music on there it now only holds 528 songs, which is considerably less than 900.
I got rid of iTunes 9 and downloaded iTunes 7.7.1, cos it works, and downloaded the same songs and it still only holds 528 songs.
Apparently this is not an uncommon problem, and in fact it happened to me when I had my 2 GB 1st generation nano.
So I'm wondering if anyone can help me out and offer some suggestions that might remedy my problem, I'd be grateful and am willing to try anything. Thanks so much
    Corey

The default Import settings for iTunes 8 and later is 256 kbps AAC instead of 128 kbps AAC as it was in iTunes 7.

You did import these important photos over to an alternative storage medium, just like you would with any digital camera, right?

  • I seem to have lost all of my playlists and more than half my songs. How do I get them back? Dont know what I did wrong? Please Help

I seem to have lost all my original playlists and more than half my songs. How do I get them back, where did I go wrong?
If I was to press "restore" does this wipe everything off my library? I always thought that you could never loose songs? That they were always stored somewhere
    in there. Please help,

If those tabs aren't in History > Recently Closed Tabs or Windows then they are probably lost.
You can try to search them in the History if you haven't bookmarked them.
Using the "Show my windows and tabs from last time" setting is a more reliable way to restore session data.
    * Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

  • Computer froze while download purchases....some songs are lost

While downloading the album "Broken Boy Soldiers" by "The Raconteurs" my computer froze and had to be restarted. When this happened, two of the songs were at the "processing" stage so according to iTunes they were already downloaded when I restarted, however the song files are nowhere to be found. When I did the check for purchases it started downloading the non-downloaded songs, with the exception of those two songs. How do I get them back?

i have lost my itunes library and did no save it or back it up. i want to no how i can get my music from my i pod back on to my itunes library again thanks

Your i-device was not designed to be a reliable unique storage for your media. It is not a backup device and everything is structured around you maintaining your media on a computer which is itself backed up. Sync transfer is one way, computer to device, matching the device content to the content on the computer (except purchased content as mentioned below).  For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will probably have to use third party commercial software unless you have an older model iPod. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • I wiped my computer and iTunes did not remember songs ect when reinstalled it and have I lost all my songs. Doesn't the Apple ID sign in keep all your details??

I wiped my computer and when I reinstalled iTunes, none of my songs ect were listed. Have I lost all my songs for good and need to redownload and copy my CDs???
Why doesn't the Apple ID remember everything for when you change computers or do a wipe? So frustrated and unhappy now.

Songs you upload into iTunes via MP3 file or CD are stored locally.   You would need to do those again if you wiped your hard drive (assuming you didn't have a backup of your iTunes library)
Songs you download through iTunes are downloadable again with your ID at no additional charge.

  • HT4914 When I subscribed to iTunes Match I lost all my songs. I did a back up of my ITunes Library to iCloud but I can't find the songs! Can someone help me?

When I subscribed to iTunes Match I lost all my songs. I did a back up of my ITunes Library to iCloud but I can't find the songs! Can someone help me?

I guess the iTunes store is not recognizing your computer. Did you de-authorise your computer after you uploaded to iTunes Match. Did you register your new computer with a different User ID? Do you have Genius turned on (which needs to be on as it works in conjunction with iTunes Match. Did you authorise your new computer?
You paid for ITunes match & uploaded your songs using a different computer. So there are obviously one or more steps which need to be taken to download your media from the iCloud. Either someone else with more expertise than I can help you, for example, Limnos Limnos ; or King_Penguin King_Penguin or Chris_CA https://discussions.apple.com/people/Chris%20CA would probably be able to help you better than I.
    I don't work for Apple, I'm only a volunteer, if you can't get help from someone as mentioned above there's always Kappy (who is extremely busy) Kappy ;
then I would recommend going through the tried and true channel here > http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
Sorry I couldn't solve your problem myself. I'm about ready to retire from this game.
    Peace Out.

  • Why won't my iPod work on iTunes or my computer?  It shows up (not on iTunes) and the iPod shows connected but it has to be "formatted." And why are half my songs unable to play on it anymore?  It just skips them!

I've read through several discussions and I've seen a lot of similar issues but none that were quite like mine.  Every time I plug my 3rd gen. iPod nano in it shows it connected on the iPod screen and iTunes opens up but the device does not show up in iTunes.  The icon on the iPod shows connected and gives the arrows circling showing syncing even though it still says connected.  But it won’t show up in iTunes.  It shows up on my windows computer but I can’t click it or make it do anything.  It keeps saying “You need to format the disk before you can do anything.”  And when I hit cancel it beeps and says "Location not available.  Dara error (cyclic redundancy check)."  As if I know what that means!!  And I have 800 songs on it but they aren’t all on my computer and some are on my parents’ computer but I can’t get to that one.  It shows it is a “FAT32” which I have no clue what that means but I’ve never noticed that before.
Windows "can't access the disk" and I don't know why.  It gives me that notification if I try to check the drive or disk or device for problems.  And if you click it on Windows it pops up a screen with formatting things (which I don't know anything about).  And then it closes and says that it CANNOT format the device.
The iPod works almost okay when it isn’t plugged in, but I’ve noticed that half my songs won’t play.  You click on it and it plays the next one in the album.  And it isn’t always the first song in an album but random songs.  And songs I listen to a lot.  You can’t go back (you can only go forward and you can’t skip over the ‘missing’ song) or even click to select those songs.  But other songs play normal, just not half of them that are on the iPod but all of a sudden no longer work.  And I don’t know why.  I have another 3rd gen. iPod nano that doesn’t have ANY of these problems.  It hooks up, it doesn’t need formatting, and all its songs play.  I don’t know what is wrong or what to do.  I’ve tried re-downloading iTunes and everything.  I don’t want to have to reset my iPod and lose everything.
I’ve tried locating the device in iTunes and it shows the iPod but it gives this weird symbol and I can’t select it.  It’s like a white box with a box that is outlined in blue with six random icons in the middle.   I’ve seen it before and it always means something is wrong or a file (which is where I have seen it before) is corrupted.  And like I said I have a second iPod nano of the same generation and it does not give this weird symbol.  Plus it connects just fine.  It’s this one iPod.
I don’t understand what is going on.  It worked just fine and then all of a sudden I noticed songs wouldn’t play so I went to plug it into iTunes and nothing has worked.  I’ve searched discussions and none of the tips help.  But I want my songs to play again and I want my iPod back.

iPhoto just froze so I Force Quit the iPhoto app and now I have lost half my (hundreds) of photos. How do I restore them?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD
