Computer froze, restarting just bongs
My Intel Mac Pro locked up. When restarting, the apple came up and the spoked wheel turned for forever. It stayed that way for a long time without finishing the restart. After a while the monitor would blink.
Restarted again and it would then only continue to bong several times, acturally would not stop bonging. Took the drive out, ran it on another machine as a second drive and used disk first aid to do repairs. It had a lot of repairs to make.
Put it back in my mac and the mac still will not restart and continues to bong. I put the drive in the other mac again, but this time used it as a start-up drive and the other mac functions fine.
What are some things I can do with the mac?
Jim
Adding that the mac bongs 5 times, pauses then bongs again 5 times, repearting the pattern till I sopt the mac.

HELP! I just downloaded pics from my Canon 7D to i photo. I was near the end of editing and the computer froze (started spinning). I forced a restart and went I got back to iPhoto all my work was gone. Any suggestions?
a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and then reformat the card -- I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos
Try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database

I was cropping in iphoto, the computer froze, I powered down. After restart, the photos were lost. How do I find them?
Do the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.
NOTE: was it the computer that froze or just iPhoto? If it was just iPhoto you can use the ➙ Force Quit menu option to quite out of iPhoto without having to power down.

My computer froze so i manually restarted it. Since then, I haven't been able to proceed past the white loading screen with the grey apple on it. What should I do?
Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Just press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The RepairDisk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead. -
my computer froze so i restarted it, and now thats its back on every document i've work on has popped up on the desk top and wont exit. what sould i do?
it is a macbook pro, OS X mountain lion 10.8.2, i can open new windows and exit them but not all the pop upsStart from your recovery system. OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion includes a built in set of utilities in the Recovery System. Restart your Mac and hold down the Command key and the R key (Command-R), and keep holding them until the Apple icon appears, indicating that your Mac is starting up. After the Recovery System is finished starting up, you should see a desktop with a OS X menu bar and a "Mac OS X Utilities" application window. Note: If you see a login window or your own desktop and icons, it is possible that you didn't hold Command-R early enough. Restart and try again.
When your computer finishes starting up, choose Disk Utility from the Utilities window.
Click the First Aid tab. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
Select your OS X volume.
Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

Computer froze, had to power off with button, now won't restart
Can not get computer to restart after a hard power off
Your computer is restarting. It's just not getting to the desktop. Please disregard my previous response to you.
Shut down your computer and disconnect all peripherals (keyboard & mouse if pertinent) from your computer. Now reboot. If the Mac starts up normally, shut it down again and then plug in one of the peripherals (keyboard or mouse first) and start up your computer again. If it does so successfully repeat the process, adding one peripheral at a time until your Mac acts up. At that point, disconnect the last peripheral you added, reboot your Mac and search the peripheral vendor's website for an updated driver. If no driver exists or the problem remain after installing the new driver, try a different cable or a different port on your Mac. If none of the above works, again disconnect all peripherals from your Mac, hold down the "shift" key to start up in "Safe Boot" mode. If the Mac starts up correctly, restart without pressing the "shift" key. If your computer still does not start up properly, shut it down and restart it while holding down the Apple+Option-P-R keys; keep holding "all 4 keys" down until you hear the startup sound "twice." If none of the above work Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up. Select your language. Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar. Select Disk Utility. Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid. Click Repair Disk. (If Disk Utility cannot repair, you will need a stronger utility (3rd party) - Diskwarrior or Techtool PRO) Restart your computer when done. Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer. Remove any 3rd party ram. Reinstall Snow Leopard - This will install a "fresh" copy of Snow Leopard without archiving old system files but leaves the rest of your files in place. If your computer is still under warranty or you have Apple Care, take full advantage of it by letting tech support deal with your problems. It's what you're paying them for. Out of warranty - take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you. -
Whenever i try to update my macbook pro, it downloads then says I need to restart my computer. I restart the computer, and everything just freezes. When my computer eventually turns back on, its not updated. other apps i try to download dont download also
First, do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
When you complete the above re-download your OS X upgrade (not sure which one that is, but I assume Mavericks.) After the download is completed re-install it. Hopefully, this time it will do what you expect. -
Help. computer froze while installing iwork08
Hi
I'm really new to mac computers and I don't know how to fix a frozen imac. I bought it a few weeks ago and today i installed iwork08. I went to view the iwork tour and my computer froze and went to this dark screen with a gray box in the middle with the apple logo in the middle of this box. I don't know how to get out of this as nothing i do gets me out of this. I have no clue how to deal with this and help would be much appreciated! thanksHi and welcome to Apple Discussions!
The screen display you describe is not a common one,
and I'm not sure why the computer did that; but for a
start, you could see if starting the computer up from
off (press power button until the computer shuts off)
and after the start tone, hold the Shift key down; &
keep holding it down until after you get a screen with
your login window. This should say SafeBoot, in it too.
Login, and let the computer desktop continue to form;
and then choose GO in the Finder menu bar, click on
Utilities folder, and when that opens, find Disk Utility,
and open it. Choose in Disk Utility the click on item
'repair disk permissions' and let it run through until
done, then quit Disk Utility. Restart the computer from
the menu beneath the blue Apple, and hope it boots.
You may have to use the OS X software disc1 that
came with the computer (a DVD) and start the Mac
from that system boot disc, to try and use a different
version of Disk Utility accessed in a menu bar option
beneath the Installer's menu bar once that disc boots
the computer. To boot from this system disc, you'd
need to hold the C key down on startup. Do not run
the Installer itself, the optional items are in a menu
that drops down from the main Installer header if
you click on the words along the top. Disk Utility is
among the options there. (To exit D.U., after running
'repair disk' - and also - 'repair disk permissions' you
would choose startup disk from a menu option.)
...If you have a wireless bluetooth keyboard, this may
not be possible. A USB keyboard is the best tool in
using keyboard commands on bootup or to run these
kinds of things. If you have a BT keyboard, get a USB.
{There is a way to run some system items from behind
the GUI by using something called 'single user mode'
but that is a bit deep for a first time user and better
looked into before you have an issue, to learn about it.}
I'm not sure all of what could've been behind this issue,
or the resulting screen; and there may be something else
going on there. Most of that is uncharacteristic of Mac
OSX. There are preventative maintenance routines that
should become a second nature to using this system;
and they will come with time. They forgo some issues.
In most cases, before and after installing software and
also when installing updates or upgrades to the system,
you would 'repair disk permissions' using the computer's
installed Disk Utility as found in the Applications folder
and inside that, the Utilities Folder. (To use GO is faster.)
If this works, to boot into SafeBoot, run Disk Utility's
repair disk permissions, and restart normally, that'd be
good. Otherwise, you could try several other things.
Including attempting to boot from the system installer
disc1 and choose Disk Utility from that Installer's menu
bar (drop down menu options) the use 'repair disk' and
also after that is run, use 'repair disk permissions.'
If there is a report of an error note that and run the
same choice one more time, to get a clear report.
When those are done, and if there are no bad things
in the resulting report window (just stuff fixed, etc)
then choose to restart from startup disk in the Mac's
own system, and see what happens...
To post here, what computer did you use? A Mac?
A helpful tool to have and use as part of a preventative
routine is free, and accesses the system's own tools
to run them from a nicer user interface; the one I like
runs free and is called OnyX. Titanium Software's site
has links to download the correct version for your OSX.
I have mine set to automatically restart after running a
selection I make from that tool's Automation section.
The preferences in there can be customized, also.
Good luck & happy computing! -
Computer froze while iPod plugged in -still plugged in
I had just plugged in my new iPod for the first time and after about an hour of loading the computer froze. It is still plugged in to the other computer (I have two). What should I do and what can I expect? I have not reset the computer yet, it is still frozen, and the iPod says do not disconnect.
Please help!ok well for anyone who has the same problem, we left it plugged in, and restarted the computer, and the iPod is fine.

Computer was restarted because of a problem..
After installing mountain lion my computer started saying this to me. It seems to take a few hours for this to occur. If my computer is left running idle for hours I see this message on the screen - "Your computer was restarted because of a problem."
There are some other problems I have run into that seem to be related. I would almost say that they are all linked to my external hard drive, but there are similar problems happening that (as far as I know) have nothing to do with my external hard drive. I will relate a few scenarios (all that have happened on a regular basis for almost a month now) and how they relate.
1. I open itunes and play a song from the library. Whether it is playing or not, if I leave it idle to use another program, when I come back to it after about 10 minutes and click on another song, hit play, or pause it, the program freezes, I get the spinning wheel and it does not respond. I have to force close. When I try to open it again, it won't load. Sometimes I even get an error message when I try to reopen that say something like, "you do not have permissions on the drive or folder". All of my music is on an external drive
2. Again if left idle, Safari will freeze when trying to upload images. Now this is the one that makes me think that this is not just some annoying hard drive thing. If i try to upload something, the upload window will come up but none of the will load and then i get the spinning wheel. sometimes i can click around on a few folders. I can make it to my external drive, nothing comes up. I can make to the desktop too, but nothing comes up on that either. As far as I know, nothing from safari is on my external drive.
3. Working in FCPX or Adobe PR 5.5 yield the same findings. if the program is left alone for more than about 10 minutes, it is no longer able to run even after force closing.
The MOST annoying thing about all of this is when i try to restart or shut down my computer. It wont do it. I have to hold the power button or unplug my computer.
I was told on a similar discussion to make this and post the problem details so here they are.
Thanks

com.apple.kec.corecrypto 1.0Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. Step 1 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.” While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin. Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem? After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it. *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. Step 2 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
Mid 2010 Macbook Pro "Your Computer was restarted because of a problem"
Hi guys,
Ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro has been randomly restarting itself and showing a grey sceen with the text "Your computer was restarted because of a problem."
I've googled and read all sorts of things saying remove everything from Login Items, it still happens. Everything I've tried has done nothing. Just in case it helps, here is my latest kernel panic log from Console:

com.apple.kec.corecrypto 1.0It looks as if you may have the dreaded 'bad GPU' that shipped with some versions of the 2010 model. See - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US.
Use the "Contact" Apple techs link and see if your model may be one affected. If it is, you'll qualify for a free logic board replacement from Apple.

Message: "your computer was restarted because of a problem..."
Hi all,
Just upgraded to OS X Mavericks as soon as it became available for me to download. However, a few times now, while I'm doing things, my Mac Mini keeps freezing up for a second and then restarts itself, showing a screen that says, "your computer was restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up." It isn't a specific thing that I can recall doing each time that I think is the root of the problem.
Each of the occurances was during:
1. watching Hulu on Safari
2. watching Netflix on Chrome
3. watching Netflix on Safari
4. watching a movie on VLC Player
5. doing work on Excel
6. reading an email using Apple's Mail Client
Luckily I haven't lost anything wildly important because of it, but I am somewhat fearful of the random restarts having a deeper problematic effect on my machine.
Has anyone else been experiencing this at all to a less/equal/greater degree?
Does anyone know of a possible fix?
Thank you very much for any input or help you can provide.I am currently in safe mode. have been since yesterday. no crashes to report currently. however, here's the lastest kernel panic from yesterday.

When I close Firefox and then come back to it later a box comes up that says it's already running. It says to close Firefox first but when I hit close nothing happens and the box comes up again. I have to shut down my computer and restart to get into Firefox again. If I can't get this fixed I will start using someone else. Someone told me a way to close Firefox but I forgot what they said.

== a couple of months agoHello Brian.
You don't need to restart your computer to open Firefox again: you just need to close it manually through your application manager (CTRL+SHIFT+ESC in Processes tab). Anyway, hopefully this support article is what you need:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox+hangs
What's probably happening is that you may be having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] and select ''Disable all add-ons''. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme. You can troubleshoot plugins the same way.
If you want support for one of your add-ons, you'll need to contact its author.
