Computer froze; screen turned black.  sleep saver light remained on

computer froze in mail, upon start-up, while reading an email.  could not force freeze, etc.  then screen turned black.  nothing worked.
tried holding down the power button for 10 seconds, and sleep-saver light finally turned off.  restarted by pressing power button and option key, and it re-started so far, ok.  any idea what happened, and is this likely to recur?  it's the first time in 1 year.  thx.

  • Screen turns black, computer is running, but screen stays black...

Hi Everybody, i could do with your help...
I will try to discribe the problem,.. if the screensaver comes on after 15 minutes, and i try to wake the computer, the screen turns black, like it would when turned off... you can hear the computer is on and running, but nothing on the screen, touching the mouse pad, or any button on the keyboard will not wake the computer... if i than close the lid, i can see the little white light and when i reopen the lid.. nothing.. sometimes briefly like a millisecond or so, you can see the screen on, but than goes to black again....
    Any ideas??
it does not happen when working on the computer, only when it comes out of screensaver, or if left alone for longer than 30 minutes or so.... really strange...
    Anyway, your help is appreciated!!!

    Harry,
Did this just start happening after your update to 10.6.3? There is a thread over in the OSX Snow Leopard area about the backlight not coming back on after sleep that might interest you. Here is the link ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2384628&tstart=0 ).
    Hope this helps,

  • 6th generation iPod nano automatically turns off when I push het sleep/wake button or when screen turns black after a while. How can I solve this ?

My 6th generation iPod nano automatically turns off (=stops the music) when I push het sleep/wake button or when screen turns black for power saving mode. Does anyone know how to solve this ?
I have already tried resetting, connecting to PC/iTunes to check the software version, turning off/on, I don't have any inspiration anymore.
    Thanks for your suggestions!

    Hi VeerleD,
If your iPod touch unexpectedly powers off, you may want to use the steps in this article to troubleshoot -

    Specifically -
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

  • Screen turns black, Laptop goes to sleep - Stays on even when unplugged

    Hello.
Having a strange repair issue with a powerbook 15 inch titanium. The symptoms are as follows:
    - Screen turns black (completely)
    - Sleep light stays fully lit and stays lit even when the battery is unplugged and the AC is removed
    - Still stay lit for 5-10 minutes and turn itself off
    Steps taken:
Replaced the logic board 2 months ago. Fixed the issue for that duration, but has now shown its face again. What if any other parts should I replace besides the Sound/DC-In board, and another logic board?
    Thanks.

Still waiting for a resolution on this issue. Have called Corporate and spoke with someone who said they would call me back (months ago) and never did. Spoke with someone at Customer Relations who basically said there was nothing she could do for me. My advisor has definitely been slacking and has been really hard to get responses from.
On Dec. 20th, I emailed my advisor a capture data and waited almost a week before he responded after repeated calls and contact with his manager. He and the techs felt it was a third party application causing it because thats what the capture data showed so we uninstalled it right away. I though finally the issue was resolved but no. Again on Jan. 1st my comptuer went to sleep after I had just finished a search in google. I did a capture data and emailed him right away. I called to leave a voicemail and let him know that I had sent the email but his voicemail box was full. I called back on Jan. 2nd at 9 am to see if it was still full and it wasn't so I left a message asking him to please call me or email as soon as possible to let me know that he had gotten the capture data and to let me know where we go and what we do from here.
As of Jan. 3rd at 10:05 I still havn't gotten a response, since they claim a 24 hour response time. I called back and spoke with another advisor who said that he hadn't even put any of this information into my case notes. I'm beyond annoyed at this point because this has been going on since October 4th. I not all that happy that I have to keep track of the days and times that I speak with people because now nothing is being added to my case notes.
Who do I contact about this? Has anyone ever had this type of issue? I've tried everything I can possibly think of and tried to contact everyone I possibly could up until now and nothing has been resolved.

Sounds like the battery is shot and in need of a replacement.  You can have Apple replace the battery for a flat fee or you can send it into a third party repair center for a bit less.
Not much else you can do for troubleshooting this one.

  • The screen turns black and the computer stays on

    hi,
Once in a while when I am on my beige power macintosh and it runs smoothly, it all of a suddenly stops what it is doing and the screen turns black. when I am on iTunes some times, the screen turns black but the music still plays. I unplug and replug the monitor in but it is still black. Here are my computer stats. Ram 320mb, OS 10.2.8, 8 gig hard drive, 6mb vram, built in video, USB & Firewire PCI cards, and an AV Personality Card w/ 28k Modem, Running 333 mhz, and I have tried 3 other mother boards

    Welcome Jarrett,
The article implies that using a certain version or "build" of the 10.2.8 updater fixes the problem. No true. Almost everyone who's experienced it on a Beige G3 has used the preferred updater specified in that article.
Not every Beige gets it. I had 640MB when I moved to 10.2.8 and it never hiccuped. However, I run video off a PCI accelerator card and, as Frank mentioned, the video issue seems to happen when you are using the logic board video port.
If you can't get your computer to boot and run long enough to use Terminal, pop it open and pull RAM until its under 192MB. Then the computer should be stable long enough to do the fix. Then you can add the pulled RAM back.
The good new is that everyone seems to have permanently fixed the problem by applying the Terminal procedure described.

  • Screen turns black during use

Ok I had this problem before, took it to Apple..They fixed it. Now my computer it doing this again! I had a couple windows open, then all of a sudden my screen turns black. The keyboard light was still on though. So I think the computer may have gone into sleep mode?! Can someone comment on this? Then I pressed the power button to shut the computer off. I tried to restart it. I got to the login page, typed my password. Everything looked fine. Then I tried opening safari and the computer screen turned black again.

"Ok I had this problem before, took it to Apple..They fixed it. Now my computer it doing this again!"
Take MBP back to the repair shop & tell them it's still "broke." If the original repairs were done under warranty, I would call Apple Care first so that they can research your +original repair case number.+
Have you checked your Energy Saver settings?

  • The screen turns black by itself

    Hi,
    I'm from Brazil, so please disregard my bad english (I hope you understand );
Well, I've one Toshiba L645, and recently it screen turns black (do not turn off, just stop shine) when something heavy is running (NBA 2k13 for example), and i've no idea about what's happening, when I close it (the game) the screen shines again.
Please, can you help me, at least an idea about that.
    Thank you.

The screen could be going black for several reasons. It could be that the Screen Saver is turning on and stopping the video. Check your Screen Saver settings and make sure that the Screen Saver is turned off. It could be a bad or intermittent video cable between the system board and the LCD screen, but I don't think so since the screen comes back when you turn off the game. How would an intermittent video cable know when the game was being ended? It wouldn't so it can't be the cable. It could be that the computer's Sleep or Hibernation mode is turning on and turning off the screen. Check the Sleep and Hibernation settings in Control Panel under the Power Options Advanced Settings. Make sure for the testing that they are both turned off.

  • IBook On, Screen Turns Black

I installed the 10.4.6 update last night and everything seemed fine. I pack up the 'book and head to class - left it on but sleeping. So when I get to class and try to wake it from sleep, nothing happened... the sleep light wasn't on either and the Apple logo on the back was dimly lit which went out. After not being able to shut down or start up (since I didn't know if the 'book was on or not), I took out the battery and plugged it in.
First time I started up, gray Apple logo then a gray blank screen... which was there for about 5 minutes. Hard shut down... start up, took a while but everything was working fine... for about five minutes. Out of nowhere the screen just went black, but I could tell the computer was still on because the display was actually luminous.
The third time I try to start up, the fan in the back starts spinning like crazy... no gray Apple logo, nothing at all appears on the screen at any time. It might be worth noting the fan that's spinning is just the one in the back, not the one on the left side.
So now I'm lost. I'm able to start up once maybe every six or seven tries. I was able to start up in safe mode, ran Disk Utility, verified the disk, checked permissions, everything seemed fine. Then eventually, after another minute or two, the same thing happened again, the screen just went black but was still on. I tried single user mode and running fsck, no problems. I started up with my login items disabled, screen turned black after 4 or 5 minutes.
I'm going to try to run firewire target mode and back up my files... but could this be a software problem since this only occurred after the 10.4.6 update... or could it be a hardware problems - in which I've never ran into any problems before... or could it be a problem with both?

    10.4.6
    768 RAM
    60GB drive
    DVD/CD-RW
    iBook Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks Jon, Lyssa - for your input.
Since I've posted last I haven't been able to make it to the gray Apple logo screen... so I'm pretty much out of luck. I can't start up from my install DVD, nor can I boot from my firewire hard drive. I'm starting to hate myself for not backing up while I had the chance... however that probably would've failed 5 minutes into the process.
I live in New York and I'd love to bring my 'book to the Soho store, however I'd have to be there at 6 AM and probably wait a long while before I can get my laptop looked at... but that's not an option since I'm a college student and I have classes to attend, and I'm not willing to shell out however much it is to become a Pro Care member if I usually don't have any issues with my Apple products. It's disappointing and frustrating considering that's where I bought my 'book in the first place.
But I digress - I'll have to go an official Apple reseller and have this checked out... after reading through a few other sites, I'm getting the feeling it's the logic board that got screwed up.
I didn't take note of the S.M.A.R.T. status, I'm kicking myself for not doing so. I've been using a new battery for about 3 weeks or so, the circles light up solid.
One question before I bring my 'book in... if there's nothing wrong with my hard drive, and some other part needs to be replaced, will my hard drive end up being wiped? I understand it's probably standard procedure after a repair to start with a clean system - however I have tons of photos which I didn't back up, which I realize now is stupid, to say the least.
If anyone has any further suggestions as to what I can do with an iBook that does nothing but run its fan... please let me know Otherwise, tomorrow I'll post what the issue was if I can get it looked at... hopefully not too many other people have experienced the same issues. Cross your fingers~!

  • Suddenly while working my screen turns black

Lately, while working on different programs (email, pages, keynote, etc.), my screen turns black.  the keyboard and computer are on but it is annoying as I can't get the screen to go back on without turning off the computer. It's as if the computer went to sleep.  What's happening?

    Hi quantummonk,
It sounds like your display may be going to sleep due to lack of mouse or keyboard activity while watching movies. If you have to type a password each time, you most likely also have the require password when waking from sleep option selected. You may find the following articles helpful:

Note: On portable Macs, you can set seperate Energy Saver preferences for when the computer is on or off charger power.

  • Screen turns black while I'm working

My screen turns black, almost like it's going to sleep right when I'm in the middle of typing, searching the web; basically doing anything active...
My screensaver and sleep settings are in the proper positions, so I don't think this should be happening...
    hmmm....
    any ideas?

Black screens are the curse of the iBooks. Search for "black screen" or screen flickering" to find many others with similar problems. There are a few possible causes, but the most common is probably the reed switch. This is the switch that puts your computer to sleep when you close the lid. Unfortunately, extremely delicate wires + a display hinge opening and closing all the time = crazy problems.
Signs you have a reed switch problem:
    - your screen may flicker in brightness randomly.
    - it goes black more often when the display angle or laptop is moved.
    - after it goes black you can still faintly see the screen, or when you connect an external display it works fine.
    - you can put the laptop to sleep and wake it to temporarily bring the display back to life.
To fix the reed switch problem:
    - take it back to Apple if you're under warranty. If you can't get the problem to happen at the Genius Bar, tell them about the problems you've been having and insist that they fix it anyway. This is way too common a problem for them to blow you off easily.
    - if you're not under warranty, you can pay Apple or some other Mac shop to fix it. I have no idea how much this costs, but probably at least a few hundred.
    - if you're not under warranty and you're brave/poor enough that you want to fix it yourself it is possible (I just did it myself last week). While there's nothing about the repair that takes special knowledge, it is a very detailed and arduous process. There are dozens of screws and parts that need to be removed in a very specific sequence. It took me about 5 hours start to finish (though I also replaced the hard drive) and I ended up with a few "extra" pieces that didn't make it back in despite being very careful. On the plus side, the reed switch itself is only about $25 and is available from places like Smalldog.
If you do decide to fix it yourself, do youself a favor and download the guides from ifixit.com. If you google around, you can probably also find the actual Apple repair manual (which is even better), but ifixit.com has great screw guides to keep track of everything.
One last thing - I originally had the reed switch problem under warranty and Apple fixed it with no problem. Unfortunately, the reed switch problem came back in a couple of months - after the warranty expired. Just a word to the wise if you have this problem and you're considering whether to buy the extended AppleCare policy.

  • (Mountain Lion) suddenly the screen turns black, and I have to use the switch to turn it on. And, the screen turns to zoom, and the only way to turn to normal is to close the window and start all over again?

(Mountain Lion) suddenly the screen turns black, and I have to use the on/off switch to turn it on. And, the screen turns to zoom, and the only way to return to normal is to close the window and start all over again?

Does the screen go black while you are using the machine? ...or after it has sat idle for a bit?
If it happens while you're using the machine, check to see if a hot corner has been set for sleep. You can do that here: System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Screen Saver and click the button labelled "Hot Corners..." in the lower right.
If it happens after a bit of idle time, that's normal sleep behavior. The delay can be adjusyed here: System Preferences > Energy Saver.
In either case, pressing any key on the keyboard should bring it out of sleep.
    Re zooming -
If this happens while in Safari, and you are using an Apple Magic Mouse, a default setting applicable to it is that a soft double-tap on the mouse will zoom the Safari window. A second double-tap will bring it back.
If it is the entire screen that is zooming, Control plus scroll gesture on the mouse will zoom the whole screen. Repeat with the opposite scroll gesture to bring it back.

  • Screen turns black or with pattern

    Hey,
I noticed that, occasionally while online or not, the screen turns black and/or displays a moving pattern of colourful large dots (not contained in the display collection). The phenomenon vanishes as soon as I operate the keyboard or mouse again. Does anyone has an idea what that is? Please, give me some feedback. Thanks!

I take it you've checked the settings for display sleep in System Preferences > Energy Saver?
Also check in Sys Pref > desktop & Screensaver > Hot Corners to see if display sleep and/or screensaver have been set to operate if the cursor strays into a corner.
