Computer froze, won't start-up, kernal panic...

Hey all,
I have a MBP that froze on me in the middle of transferring my iTunes library to my 80GB iPod, and ripping a cd to my iTunes, at the same time. I did a force quit, went to restart, as I have always done, and it wouldn't get past the grey apple and spinning progress wheel.
I got out my install disks, booted from disk 1, and ran my Disk Utility, according to the directions in the forum entries I read. When I try to verify the HD, it starts, then notes an 'Invalid HFS+ Volume Header' stops the verification, and starts to repair the disk. At the end, it says it fixed the 'Volume Header' and when I recheck the verification, it comes up fine.
However, my personal subcatetory HD is "greyed out", and does not have any information as to 'Owner Priveledge', 'Total number of files', 'Disk Capacity', 'Available Disk Space' etc. Basically, it knows I have a hard drive, but won't mount my personal information. It allows me to run 'Repair' and says it has repaired the disk, as it does with the main HD listed.
I cannot click the verify or repair permissions buttons, as they are greyed out for both main HD and subcategory/personal HD.
I have attempted to boot in Safe Mode, with no luck. I have tried to boot a Tech Tools disc, to no luck. I have tried to run an 'Archive and Install' but it will not give me an HD to put the install on, as if there is no HD in my laptop.
The S.M.A.R.T. status is "Verified", and the hardware/hard drive tests all said everything was fine.
I also tried the "root# fsck -fy" but it will not give me the promt line to enter any commands. It stops after the "Darwin" and panic text, and all I can do is restart, which does nothing.
I have Disk Warrior on the way, but is there anything else I can try in the mean time?
If I get a bootable external, could I have any hope of salvaging my 40 GB's of music and photos off my frozen drive?
Thanks in advance!
MBP 1.83 GHz/80GB   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Well, apparently all it took was the magic of DW, and I'm back in business. I still need to do a full backup, from a yet purchased external HD, but at least all of my files appear to be there still, without corruption, which is great.
Anyone want to suggest a bootable external HD, around 500GB, that hasn't given them any issues with their MBP and some simple weekly backing up?
Thanks.

  • Cd won't eject and kernal panics: what does it mean?

I've been getting kernal panics from time to time recently, and just last night a burned DVD refused to mount, show up in Disk Utility, or eject. i tried rebooting with the mouse down with no effect, and then i tried option-apple-O-F'ing and typing "eject CD," but it told me "can't OPEN the EJECT drive." is there anything i can do to get the DVD out? i'm out of warranty and apple care at this point.
The drive still makes noises on bootup, so at least the power is connected correctly. But I just checked System Profiler, and under Disc Burning it says, "No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly." Does this just mean that the drive somehow got disconnected? Would it be worth my while to open the computer up and make sure the connection is tight?

you'd be wasting your time; its so tight in there that the optical has no place to go.

  • Computer froze and fan started going faster by the second. What could've happened?

I was using my computer (MacBook Pro Retina 13") and suddenly it froze and the fan speed was going higher by the second. I had to switch off the compute before something serious happens.
I did the EtreCheck after reading some of the responses. Hope this helps in figuring out what is going wrong. Also how to minimise the CPU usage and reduce the RAM as well?

    Hello Abed88,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
After you restarted your computer did the issue where your fans were spinning at a high RPM and the Mac became unresonsive come back?  If so I recommend that you start with doing an SMC reset.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Home Sharing wasn't turned on on my, now broken computer, that won't start. Now I can't syncronise my iTunes on my new computer with my iPod

I had my iPod connected to a computer that's now broken and now it won't start. Now I can't use Home Sharing on my new computer, since it wasn't turned on on my first computer, and I can't syncronise my iPod with my iTunes library. The only thing I can use iTunes for now, is to hear music from my computer... What can I do?
I'm pretty desperate for help; it would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
When it  says place the iPod in recoverymode use one of these programs.
    For PC
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
    If necessary:
    Download QTMLClient.dll & iTunesMobileDevice.dll for RecBoot
    and
    RecBoot tip
    For MAC or PC
    The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Start up kernal panic???

I have my MDD G4 set to start up before I get up so I'm ready to start working. This morning I came into my office and the monitor was gray with a white square, about 1x1 inches, in the middle. Inside the white square was a blue representation of the earth. Is this a kernal panic? I tried restarting and came back with the same white square.
I restarted using my cloned external HD and repaired permissions on my internal startup drive. One permission was repaired, sorry can't remember the exact name, and it started with library/.... . Restarted using my internal HD and everything now operates normally.
Can one bad permission really cause this or is there possibly going on I should be worried about?
    Thanks,
    Doug

Dougles, that doesn't sound like a kernel panic.

  • How do I get a CD out of a computer that won't start?

My computer has been freezing up. Usually if I let it cool off a few hours it will start again, but when I tried today it froze up during startup. I've got a CD in the drive. How do I get it out without trying to reboot the computer and possibly doing more damage to it?
I don't know if the freezing is due to hardware or what. All I know is that the CPU gets really hot and then everything stops. I've vacuumed dust out of it and made sure all connections inside were tight. I've run disk utility from the Tiger DVD and it said repairs were done. But problems keep getting worse and I just don't want to try and start it again - at least not until I get Disk Warrior. Can't get the DW disk in until I get the other one out.
I'm traveling in Newfoundland and won't be able to purchase Disk Warrior or have anyone look at the computer until early September when we get back to the US.

  • I have an OS install disc stuck in a computer that won't start. How do I eject

ACcidentally put an apparently incompatible OS install disc in my PPC iMac, now I can't get past a grey screen full of panic information and a message telling me to restart. How can I get around this to eject the disc do the computer can start as normal? Running OS 10.4 currently

Worse case scenario, unplug the computer while holding down the mouse button, the disc will eject.

  • MacBook froze & won't start up.

Hi, I've never really had any previous issues with this computer. I got it in December and it has been working fine (except for some power cord issues). But last night it froze and when I turned it off and tried to start it back up, all I got was a gray screen. Occasionally I will get a blinking folder with a question mark on it.
I have tried resetting it with those key commands and restarting from the CD I got with the computer, but I can't seem to get past the step where it asks me to choose where to install applications; there is nothing to choose from.
I'm worried that my hardrive is dead. Does that mean I can't salvage anything on it?
Does anyone have any idea what's going on?
    Thank you.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I hope you haven't been turning it off by simply holding the power button down, and actually have been OKing "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now" and wait until it shuts down. Cause if you have simply been powering it down by removing the battery, or lettering the battery drain, or just holding the power button to restart it, you have been damaging the directory in doing that. So it is possible your damage is limited to the directory and not the hard drive.
Also if your hard drive got particularly full, the directory may get damaged.
You can get Subrosasoft FileSalvage and an external hard drive to see if you can recover data from it. In the future always backup your data(x) frequently. Once you know your data is backed up, then you can examine the directory to see if it can be fixed. Please let me know when you know this to be the case.
    (x) Links to my pages may give me compensation.

  • Macbook Pro won't start? kernel panic every time

I am having a problem even the people at the genius bar cannot solve.
I took it in the other day, and the diagnostics run by the employee could not find anything wrong with my hardware, yet whenever I attempt to start it up, it produces a kernel panic. Until today I could not get the computer to even get past the grey loading apple screen.
Here is what I know so far:
-2.2 ghz processor intel mac from mid 2008-2009
    -running version 10.5.8 os x
    - I have run it in single user mode, and typed in fsck -fy and a pcsd.pub problem occurs, saying I have the wrong block count (16 instead of 17). After running it in this mode, it says it is repaired, but I am not convinced, as it has frozen on me (while the screen flickers constantly) if i try to repair the disk.
    does anybody have any guesses?
what is the next thing I can do from home?

Your hard disk's directory structure is corrupt. Disk Utility may be able to repair it to the extent that you will be able to mount the volume for the purposes of extracting your data should you not already have a backup, but that will not change the fact that the hard disk has already failed and requires replacement.
Erasing and the disk and reinstalling OS X may work for a while but the problem is certain to return.
The Apple Store can replace the HD for a reasonable fee, or you can do it yourself.

  • Computer just won't start up

My computer starts normally until the desktop background is displayed and the Spotlight icon is visible in the upper right corner of the screen (the rest of the menu bar isn't there). If I move the cursor over the Spotlight icon, the spinning color wheel appears (Everywhere else the cursor is the normal black arrow). I don't hear any of the usual clicks that indicate the computer is thinking, so it appears to be just frozen. It remains like this indefinitely--the screen dims and eventually goes black, as usual, but it doesn't start up any further. The last time I used it was to watch a movie the previous night. I haven't installed anything or made any major changes lately. It's very weird. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    PowerBook G4 15" 1.5GHZ, 512MB ram   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    hi there--
the first thing i would do for this problem is to boot to the install disk (for tiger) and run disk repair. instruction are give here if you have never done that before. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214. then i would try to restart normally. if it still doesn't work, then try a safe boot, holding the shift key during startup until you see a spinning cog under the apple. just to warn you, it takes awhile for a safe boot sometimes. if that is successful, then remove anything in library/startupitems folder as well as deleting items in system preferences > accounts > login items. let me know if either of those things works. • Please help!  2.7 Power Mac froze, won't start up past white apple screen!

    Hello!
I own a Dual processor 2.7 power mac G5. I only had safari and itunes running when everything came to a freeze without any kind of crash message. Upon force-shutting down the computer, the white screen with the gray apple came up, but would not move past this point! I also did not notice any sounds coming from my machine! I force-shutdown and started it up again and the same occurred. I left the room to jump on this computer (my old, trusty G3 iMac) to try and research while I let it try to start up. When I entered back into the room, I heard the fans going a pretty full-blaze with the white screen w/ apple still starring at me. So I shut it down and came here to post. If it is major issue, at this point, I just want all of my data to be safe. Can someone help me? Any ideas or suggestions? I am not thinking too clearly.

    Hi-
    Don't give up yet.
There are a few things to try before hauling the machine in for diagnosis.
What I think you should do now, is to follow all the steps (in order) as listed/described in this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
Even if you have tried before, please follow the order of troubleshooting.
Each step helps to isolate the problem.
Removing all but keyboard, mouse, and monitor is important.
Try the Safe Mode boot, followed by resetting the PRAM.
In lieu of repairing with Disk Utility, try and start to your DiskWarrior disk.
Remember, booting to Disk warrior can take several minutes, so be patient.
In the "Remove third-party RAM and internal hardware" step, try removing and reseating the RAM, and graphics card, attempting to boot after RAM, and again after graphics card.
Instructions for removal and replacement are here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA22565
Also, it wouldn't hurt to try booting the G5 to firewire target disk mode.
but I wonder what my G5 (the fans, in particular) would make of that interaction. hmm . . .
The fans are just noisy. They will insure that overheat damage doesn't occur.
If the firewire boot is successful, it may be wise to copy your files so that you can try a reinstall of the OS, should that be necessary.
Also, again worst case, check for coolant leakage:

  • New MBP: Kernal Panic on 2nd start-up

No third-party apps have been installed on this thing yet. Opened it up, went through registration process, software update and the subsequent restart. closed the machine after browsing the web for 5 min. • I think I may had a kernal panic...

...I say think, because I just experienced something on my Quad that has not occured before, or on any of my other Macs, either.
I was browsing my EXS library, when suddenly a load of text ( white characters on black background) came up on the upper left side of the display. The appearance was as if it was made up of strips of text. I didn't dwell on this too long, because the fans came on, big time (that's never happened before on the Quad), so I hit the power button on the front and switched off. The text did give info, though, and the last line said something like: "waiting for remote debugger."
I started up the computer again: it took a little longer than usual. The fans powered up briefly, then it booted as normal. I repaired permissions, then verified the system drive: all passed successfully. I restarted from the hard drive and it booted up as always: quick and clean.
So, what was that all about, and should I be concerned? Is there anything else I need to check or do, or should I just forget it?
    Thanks for any advice.

Unfortunately, since starting to use Logic Pro, I've had more kernal panics than I like to talk about. What you describe, however, does not resemble a kernal panic (where a grey curtain slowly falls upon all your unrecoverable work and the voice of doom (in a dialogue box) tells you that you must restart your computer).
Upon restart from a kernal panic, you will also be invited to send a description to Apple of what you were doing before the dreaded panic happened. You didn't appear to get that invitation. Frankly, I've been using Macs since 1988 and I've never seen what you described.

You've been advised to erase the drive and reinstall OS X to see if that fixes the problem. Until you do that there's really no point examining other alternatives.
If an Erase and Install doesn't resolve the problem then take the computer in for repair.
Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values.
