Computer goes to sleep won't wake up

I have given a laptop to an elderly parent so that she can surf. For several weeks now, at some point in the day the laptop goes black (to sleep?) and the slowly blinking white light bottom right glows steadily. Tapping the track pad or any key does not bring up the desktop. I have tried draining the battery and re-charging, changing System Preferences under Energy Saver for the display and computer to never sleep, cleaned up permissions with Disk Utility. That's about the extent of it, the computer shuts down every day I suspect at the same time but have no way to check.
This is a MacBook Pro 15" around4 years old? 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5   4GB Memory, 1067 Mhz  DDR3. FWIW, the only non-native program is an application to run a signal antenna to connect her laptop wirelessly to my network. Generally the laptop is run connected to power, and I don't believe it makes any difference whether the laptop is left open or shut.
Appreciate any help you can give!

This isn't a fix, more a workaround I used when I had wake from sleep problems that lasted from some point in 10.6.x, through 10.7 and into 10.8 (got fixed for me in 10.8.2). It seems to be connected with Bluetooth failing to wake up properly:
System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'.

  • Mac air goes into sleep won't wake

MacBook Air goes to sleep as normal, but won't wake up now.

A new mini is on the way & I'm researching UPS's. A question that I now have is -
The new mini will have 10.5 which will be nice, but I really want to put my old hard drive straight into the new unit so I can have my old computer back the way I like it. Right now I have my external drive with everything on it plugged into my wifes macbook, & I can access everything except my email. The old emails are there in the folders, but as numbered icons, & I can't find anything. With my business I often have to refer back to old emails, & right now it's really hard to. I have tried to import them into mail, but it says it doesn't recognize them.
If I do this, can I put the new backup discs in & load leopard onto the old hard drive without loosing my old information & setup? We are on a very slow dial-up here, so I've never been able to accept the automatic updates. I look forward your advice.

  • Retina goes to Sleep won't Wake

So i have a late 2012 Retina. It recently has been going to sleep and then failing to wake up when i open the lid or touch the keyboard. I have Reset the SMC by holding Shift+Option+CTL and the power button when the system was off. This seems to work because the power cord blinks when i do it. Sadly that has not solved the problem. I have tired of doing a hard reset by holding down the power button. I don't like doing that i feel like its not healthy for the computer.  I did a reinstall of the OS and that solved the problem for a little while, but then it returned. I am planning on doing a full clean install of OS X Mavericks but if i don't have too i don't want too. So again it goes to sleep then it doesn't wake so i hold power reset and then start again. I need to trust my ststem is going to wake up. Sending it back to Apple is not an option.

I have just started having the same problem. I used to be able to use the MBP for a few minutes, leave it on the table and let it go to sleep. Come back anytime and it would wake. Now it won't, and I have to go back and plug it in to get it to wake. I have just now noticed that the battery is almost drained. I used to be able to do this for a couple of days without charging, and now it won't make it 12 hours.
The battery being almost drained would explain the no wake, but now the question is why it is draining so quickly even in sleep mode. Especially when I used to tell everyone how great the MBP is, and how long the battery lasts and how quick is starts up. Of course I was telling this to all my co-workers where we are stuck with the company issued Dell.
I think this may have all started after upgrading to 10.5 or iLife08, as those are the only two programs that have recently been added.

  • IMac goes to sleep; won't wake up

After burning my first DVD I noticed the iMac goes to sleep, the light pulsating for a few moments then it disappears (screen is still dark) and it will not wake by touching keyboard or moving the mouse. (I had to unplug it and hit start-up button to get iMac back up & running).
It seems to run fine except for this sleep issue. I can re-awake it at the stage where the screen saver is still on; after that it's in a coma. I have deleted the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file (suggested by Dale in another post).
I know I can set the computer to "Never" go to sleep but is that a viable option? And, may this sleep problem be a symptom showing some problem exists w/ the power supply or the logic board as I've seen described in other posts. i.e. Should I be calling in the Apple Care people to diagnose my comatose Mac?

I called Apple Care; the tech ran through a process involving unplugging all peripherals, etc etc; the end result being that my iMac is diagnosed w/ a power supply issue. It will qualify to be repaired under the iMac G5 Repair Extension Plan, free of charge. (My iMac also needed a logic board to be replaced 6 months after purchase in Jan. 2005.) My advice: don't purchase the "first generation" of a product line; too often the kinks haven't yet been worked out. If you must make such a purchase, buy the extended warranty (the ProCare plan) and protect your investment.

  • MBP goes to sleep, won't wake up!?!?

Recently my MacBook Pro has began going to sleep, either after not being used or after I shut it, and then it won't wake up and has to be restarted manually, which costs me data, time, etc.
I've researched the problem, but haven't seen anything that sounded exactly like what I am going through.
Plus I'm not the best at fixing stuff myself (lets just say I'm not going to get hired as a MacGenius anytime soon).
Help me! I'm writing my National Board Papers right now and need my machine to be reliable!!!
    Thanks in advance.

  • Start up drive goes to sleep, won't wake up

I added a second internal drive (SATA) Maxtor 6V250F0 250gb and have made it my start up drive. The problem is, every now and then the drive goes into sleep mode. (The computer itself has not gone to sleep. As often as not, I simply reading a website or whatever.) This leads to spinning beach ball city as applications stop responding. The only way to recover is to do a hard shut down using the power button and restart.
I have tried unchecking "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" in the Energy Saver control panel, but it still happens.
Possibly related: If I put the machine to sleep manually, when I wake it up, the start up drive acts as if it is read-only. Again, only a restart can correct it.
Also possibly related: The old start up drive can not be unmounted either in the Finder or in Disk Utility. As a result, I can't erase it with Disk Utility. (I realize I could probably get around this by starting up from the Tiger DVD, but I'm more concerned about the new start up drive problems.)

  • HPw2207 Monitor Goes To Sleep & Won't Wake Up

My HPw2207 Wide LCD Monitor goes to sleep and won't come out of the sleep mode.  The screen is blank and won't respond.  I have to unplug power and reboot the HP Desktop to get the monitor to work again.  Once the monitor is timed to sleep the same thing happens and I have to reboot the system again.  The computer is an HP-Pavillion d4999t (KC836AV-ABA).  I also have an  NVIDIA graphics card on the system.  This started about a week ago.  I checked the cable connection and it appears to be fine.  I tried downloading an updated driver for the monitor for Windows 7 from this site but it encounters an error when trying to install.  I have set the sleep mode to "Never" for now hoping that this will at least keep the monitor awake in screen saver mode.  I need some help.
    Thanks,
    Bob

    Hi:
Thanks for your nterest in the problem.  Yes, I have tried pressing both the power button and the spacebar to bring the monitor out of sleep mode.  Neither works.  The power button is non responsive at this point.  Shutting off the monitor and restarting does nothing as well.  The only way to get the monitor out of sleep is to disconnect all power and cold start the entire system.  However when the monitror goes back into sleep mode the system freezes up again.

  • ATI Radeon 300 Monitor goes to sleep - won't wake up.

I have Windows 7 running on a system that has an ATI Radeon 300 based video card.  The card has two monitor connectors, VGA and DVI.  I am using two monitors, Number 1 is a 19" 16:9 monitor connected to the DVI, Number 2 is a 15" 4:3 monitor connected to the VGA port.  The primary monitor (with the Task Bar) is Number 1, DVI, 16:9.
Here's what happens.  When I leave my Windows 7 computer the monitors go to sleep.  When I come back to do some more work, and I move the mouse, only display Number 2 wakes up!  I can move the mouse around and Display 2, the 15" 4:3 monitor on the VGA works great, but the main display connected to the DVI will not wake up.  I have to do a shut down using the power button on the front of the computer!
Weird, huh?  Any clues?  I do like to have my computer monitors turn themselves off when not in use.
Thanks if anyone can help.  I'm using the video drivers that installed with Windows 7.

    Hi PhilBiker,
It seems that your ATI Radeon 300 based video card is a little bit old. Since one of your monitor (15" 4:3 monitor on the VGA) can wake up properly, we can conclude the Power Settings are configured correctly and this issue can occur because the device driver you currently use cannot support yours 19" 16:9 monitor on the DVI very well or Monitor Configuration is not set normally.
After checking the official documentation on ATI support link, you can see
"Note: AMD’s DirectX 9 ATI Radeon graphics accelerators are not officially supported under Windows 7.   If the user chooses to, they can install the ATI Catalyst Windows Vista graphics driver under Windows 7.   Please be aware that none of the new Windows 7 graphics driver (WDDM 1.1) features are supported (as the Windows Vista level graphics driver is limited to WDDM 1.0 level support).  Using the ATI Catalyst Windows Vista driver under Windows 7 is not officially supported by AMD, and as such AMD will not provide any form of customer support for users running in this configuration”
    Reference: ATI Catalyst™ Display Driver
Radeon™ X300 Graphics Technology - Versatility and Performance at a Value Price
As suggested, you can try installing Windows Vista driver in Windows 7 to check if the issue can be resolved.
    1. Right-click the exe. file and choose Properties.
    2. Under the Compatibility tab, please check the "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and choose "Windows Vista".
    3. Check the box before “Run this program as an Administrator” below.
    4. Click OK to save the settings.
    5. Follow the instruction to install the driver, and test.
After that, if the issue persists, please do the following test and let me know the results.
    1. Disconnect the 15” monitor and only connect the 19” monitor, put the computer to sleep, then resume it to see if the 19” monitor can resume normally.
    2. Set the 15” monitor as the primary display and set the 19” monitor as the external display to test.

  • IPhone 4 Bluetooth automatically "going to sleep", won't wake up until bluetooth is cycled on/off

    Hey guys,
I've had this problem for a while, but just recently it's been getting more and more frustrating.
I have an iPhone 4, and whenever I get into my car, my car will automatically search for the iphone to connect to. Now, normally this is great! Except that, after a few hours of non-use, my iPhone's bluetooth connection will require that I either A. Click on the car's bluetooth profile in the bluetooth menu to "wake up" the bluetooth (which involves the phone automatically cycling bluetooth on and off) or B. Manually turning bluetooth on and off.
Is this normal? I thought that if I left bluetooth "on" it would be waiting for a connection and would activate automatically when something was trying to pair with it. Any insight?

    Anyone?

    I'm using a late 2006 2.33GHz imac.
I clean installed 10.6 from disc then updated to 10.7 from download.
Now every time my computer goes into sleep it won't wake up.
The only way it will restart is to pull the mains lead out of the imac, put it back and try until it will start.
This only happened after reinstalling.  Only Apple OS was on the imac and so it must be an issue with the software I believe.....
Anyone know how to cure this problem please?

  • MacBook screen goes gray and won't wake up from sleep - 10.6.2

We have a MacBook Alum running 10.6.2 with 4gb ram.
We recently upgraded to 10.6.2 from Leopard and this issue started to happen.
It seems that as the MacBook goes to sleep or goes to the screensaver mode, the screen goes gray and won't wake up from sleep or screensaver mode without a hard reboot.
Is Apple aware of this issue? It did not happen with the previous version of Leopard. This issue arrived when we upgraded to Snow Leopard. Other than the sleep issue, SL is rock solid. Kudos to Apple for producing a great OS!

    Hi GrooveDaddy,
Have you contacted AppleCare via telephone to make them aware of this issue? It definitely doesn't sound like normal behavior. What sort of troubleshooting have you done so far on the issue? What sort of settings do you have on your screen saver? Password protected? Custom iPhoto slideshow?
What if you manually sleep the machine by closing the lid or engaging it via software (via the Apple menu) does the screen have the issue in both scenarios?

  • Computer goes to sleep and doesn't wake up

Hi, I have an external hard drive (Western My Book), every time that the computer goes to sleep or I do it myself the computer doesn't wake up, I have to restart, I already used disk warrior, any suggestions? Thank you.

  • Computer goes to sleep and ipod won't charge

when i leave my ipod connected to charge overnight, it only ends up charging the 20 or so minutes before the computer goes to sleep - how do i correct this?

    Absolutely.
I suggested this as a workround for those who (like me) wish to keep the option to sleep when not in use. It prevents one having to change settings every couple of days to charge an iPod. Simple and elegant, like all computer fixes should be

  • Apple tv loses home sharing when my computer goes into sleep mode

Just recently, my Apple TV says that home sharing is off when my computer goes into sleep mode.  It never used to do that - any suggestions?

I have the same problem here. Always back-ed up with Time Machine (OSX 10.9 Mavericks) to Western Digital drives. MyBooks, MyPassport 1TB (USB 3.0), all works fine. Time Machine is actually doing back-ups overnight. Since I got this new 2TB MyPassport Ultra USB 3.0 it's working perfect during days, but every morning when I wake up the MacBook from sleep, I get this annoying error:
Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “MyPassportUltra”.
Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.
Latest successful backup: Today, 02:27 am
I'm also not able to write anything to that drive, or unmount it. It stil shows up in Finder, and I'm able to read all the data perfectly fine. When I do a Disk Utility Verify Disk directly after, I get this:
    Checking volume
    disk3s2: Scan for Volume Headers
    Invalid Volume Header @ 0: I/O error
    Invalid Volume Header @ 2000021315072: I/O error
disk3s2 is not a CoreStorage volume
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.
I don't click Repair Disk, as this will probably screw up my partition. Instead, I have to unplug the USB cable (which is bad for the drive, there's no time to park the drive's heads) and plug it in again. After clicking Backup Now, Time Machine immediately starts backing up, and the drive works fine the rest of the day.
I contacted WD Support, and they are sending me a booster USB cable. As System Information reports, the drive receives enough power though:
    Current Available (mA):          900
    Current Required (mA):          224
Unfortunately there's no firmware update for this drive, which will probably fix this. See this topic: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4196704.
