Computer hangs

I have a mid-2011 Intel 27 inch - the first ones that came out with the Thunderbolt port.  Several days ago, I was having problems working on a Final Cut Pro project - FCP was constantly crashing.  I rebooted the computer and all was well.  Then this morning, I had to reboot the computer again.  The gray screen hung for a few moments and then proceeded to go to the blue screen.  The blue screen hung for like five minutes before booting to the desk top.  I took the computer in to the nearest Apple store.  And since the computer booted normally there, they said nothing was wrong.  I'm wondering if the computer overheated and cooled down sufficiently to work normally or maybe I'm having problems with the power cord or the power strip.  Any thoughts from anyone?  By the way, it's still running Snow Leopard and updates are up to date.

maybe I'm having problems with the power cord or the power strip.
Not a good idea to connect your Mac to a power strip but directly to a wall outlet instead with a surge protector >  http://lowendmac.com/surge/index.shtml
I took the computer in to the nearest Apple store.  And since the computer booted normally there
Apple doesn't use power strips.

  • HP P7-1240 Computer hangs while starting

My computer hangs when starting. I get a black screen with nothing happening. If I press control-alt-del the task manager window that opens shows a few things n processes but no activity. After awhile the system seems to free itself and processes start to be added and the computer starts. I'd like to skip the hanging.  Any ideas?

  • Computer hangs on AC Power loss on Docking station (Z61p)

I have a problem that the computer hangs if IU disconnect the power to my docking station similar to:

Is this a known problem for the Z-series? Any solution?

    Restore after AC Power Loss
This item specifies whether your system will reboot after a power failure or interrupt
    occurs. Settings are:
[Power Off] Always leaves the computer in the power off state.
[Power On] Always leaves the computer in the power on state.
[Last State] Restore the system to the status before power failure or interrupt
    occurred.
If you have this properly configured as you indicate in your post, try a full cmos clear and set it back and to re-test.
If that is of no help, what bios version do you have installed?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.

At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.

  • Computer Hangs with 5G iPod in Dock!!

Has anyone else experienced this... and if there is a work-around. If I leave my new iPod in the universal dock attached to my MacPro 3GHz the computer hangs and makes a strange buzzing sound through my speakers. If i remove the iPod the machines starts up as normal and the buzzing sound instantly stop. As soon as the desktop is up and can re-dock my iPod and it works perfectly with iTunes....
I would just like to leave it docked to my computer... but I'm worried with the hanging and buzzing sounds that I may be causing some damage.... any comments or suggestions most welcome.
    Yours sincerely,

According to my warrenty I can't get it exchanged anymore, and well we don't have an Apple store around this area, I bought it at a local Walmart super center...HELP ME PLEASE!!!

  • Computer hangs on log-off

When I log off, the computer hangs on the splash scree--the screen picture that is behind the log on dialogue box-- and needs to be manually shut down. The box to log back in does not appear.

    Hi William,
my PBG4 shows similar behaviour at about half of my logg-offs / shut down / restart.
I have tried nearly every kind of diagnosis and repair tools (RAM, HD, file system, rights, extensions, different accounts ...) with no result. I doubt if log files would provide useful information after a forced power down because cached information may not have been flushed to disk and log files not been closed properly.
I have been following similar discussions from time to time but never found a durable solution.
The only hint I picked up was the following workaround:
Have the dock showing up while logging off.
(set permanently visible in dock preferences or unhide dock by mouse just before confirming log-off via return key)
I know it sounds strange - but it works for me!
Since I follow this advice (and don't fail to invoke the dock) there are NO more hangings during log-off / shut down / restart.
The root cause must be something about a hanging process but I have no knowledge about BSD and other things behind the Mac OS X Aqua interface.
Sorry, it's no real solution, only a workaround but could you try if this also helps on your computer?

  • 10.5.2: Two finger scrolling makes computer hang unrecoverably

I installed 10.5.2 on my MacBook Pro as soon as it became available a couple of weeks ago. Since then the computer hangs unrecoverably, on average, probably a couple of times per day. Is there anyone else out there who is encountering the same problem? Very frustrating since any on-going work that I have not saved will probably be lost!! (although this actually did not happen in practice yet).
    Here are some details:
    What happens exactly?
The cursor freezes and can no longer be moved. And the computer does not respond to any other command that I know of - except an ungraceful hardware shutdown (i.e. pressing the power button for three seconds). So that's the only escape.
    When does it happen?
So-far it has probably only happened while using Safari. And probably only while scrolling - by moving two fingers on the trackpad. But the reason why it happens then might be linked to the fact that this is an operation that I do a lot.
    Suspicion:
I suspect that the hanging is related to two finger scrolling rather than Safari since I have noticed another strange behaviour while scrolling; Once in a while the scrolling does not quite work as it should and I am taken very quickly (as in momentarily) to another part of the page where I am scrolling. These "scroll jumps" (that are quite confusing since I lose my orientation on the page and have to go search for the place where I was reading) happen when I press my fingers very lightly towards the trackpad as in barely touching at all. (I can intentionally reproduce the behaviour.) It is my hunch that the two phenomena have the same cause - so that the light touching sometimes causes a hang rather than a "scroll jump".
Any help towards solving this problem would be very appreciated! It's not very Mac like that the computer "crashes" a couple of times per day...

As it turns out the reset of the PRAM did not help. My computer just hang again a moment ago in the same way. And I was forced to do power-off/on reboot again as usual. This time I had unsaved work. But thankfully my Mac was bright enough to save this(!) (My unsaved textedit file emerged effortlessly as soon as I opened the textedit application. And my unsaved e-mail draft could be found in the "drafts" folder exactly as I was hoping.)
I will go ahead now and try cleaning up my user and system cache files as suggested to me here:

    Anything else I could try?

  • Computer hangs particularly finder functions

My computer hangs when I use finder functions.  Not all of the time but some of them.

That's probably going to be my next step.
Just save my home folder, format the hard drive and do a clean install. Totally delete the current Time Machine backup I have. Copy over only the necessary .plists and Application Support folders, and all of my files. Hopefully that will also fix the ridiculous amount of time it takes for Time Machine to "prepare" a backup.
If anyone has any suggestions for me that won't take up an entire day of my time, I am all ears!!!

I doubt this PSU even supports Haswell? Try something from quality range (Corsair, Seasonic, Antec etc.) and see if it works then.

  • IPod suddenly no longer connects to any computer, hangs and clicks/pops

I recently (within the last two weeks) started using a program called PodUtil ( http://www.kennettnet.co.uk/software/podutil.php ) to manage my music library between my work and home computers. Everything seems to have gone off without a hitch, but as of Friday my iPod started behaving very strangely.
I was playing a song on it through iTunes on my work computer when all of the sudden the song cut out and iTunes froze up. I was forced to disconnect my iPod manually without disconnecting it through the computer, and when I hooked it back up my entire system locked up until the iPod was once again removed. I plugged it in again and left the system alone and finally fifteen minutes later I got an error message saying that an iPod was detected but the iPod software wasn't installed. Despite this not being true, I uninstalled iTunes and the iPod software, reinstalled them, and finally the iPod worked correctly.
Until I brought it home and plugged it into my home computer and the exact same problem occurred. I once again uninstalled iTunes and the iPod software but this time it didn't fix the problem. The iPod refuses to connect now to any of the computers I've tried it on (home, work, my roommate's PC and even a work mac) and every time it's plugged in the system hangs until it's disconnected. I have also noticed that when it's plugged in every few minutes there's a loud hum and a clicking/popping sound that reminds me of drive heads failing on a harddrive.
The iPod itself works fine, I can play everything and it gives me absolutely no trouble. It's when I connect it to a computer that the problems begin.
I'm at a loss for what to do. I've tried every single thing under the knowledge base including rebooting and reinstalling and nothing's helped. It almost seems like there's a physical problem with the iPod (from the clicking sound) but the clicks never happen during normal operation and I haven't dropped it or anything that would've broken it. It's out of warranty and I'd rather not pay the cost of a new iPod to get this one fixed. Furthermore I took my songs off of my computer to free up space and the last music backup I have isn't entirely recent. But I can't even get it to restore even if I wanted to because it doesn't respond when it's connected. Any help will be great. Thanks!

  • I have an old iPod Classic that still works fine but it is having difficulty establishing a connection to my computer.  It will make an incomplete connection but it takes a long time and the computer hangs up until the connection is made. iTunes can't see

I have an old iPod Classic.  It still plays the music on it out of either port.  It is having trouble connecting to my Windows 7 (64bit) computer.   It takes about 30 seconds or more to connect and hangs the computer until it does.  Even though it shows up in connected USB devices and in Windows explorer it doesn't seem right.  Sometimes it does not make a connection and when it does make a connection iTunes cannot detect it, even though iTunes sometimes automatically launches when I plug in the iPod.  I've tried two different sets of cables with the same results.

It wont fix your problem, but may tell help troubleshoot, why it is freezing iTunes, especially when the Pending and Realloc numbers are high.

  • Computer hangs after update to 10.6.8 Snow Leopard

After updating to 10.6.8, programs hang...the busy icon circles for 2-3 minutes when I try to do anything. Even when I try to access 'About this mac'.

I updated my Parallels application late last night to 7.0, as that was supposed to fix the slow-down, but it did not fix my computer. Still slowwwww when not in Safe Mode. I must use Safe Mode to even use my computer...

  • Computer Hangs for 30 Seconds at a time. Please Help!!

My Macbook Pro has started locking up for 30 seconds at a time on fairly regular intervals (Every 2 - 10 min). When the lockup happens, it appears to affect anything that wants to use the hard drive. For instance, my browser will hang (i.e. do the beachball) but skype will work fine. During the hang, if I bring up any other application, it will hang if it tries to access the HD. I am not totally sure its the HD, but this is what I suspect as other background processes can continue during the lockup. It's important to note, that during these times, it is NOT using the CPU or the hard drive. It just sits there doing nothing. I do not hear the hard drive access going crazy. I also have 4GB of ram and it happens when almost nothing is open so it is not a performance problem.
Here is what I have already tried
    - Disabling the SMS (sudden motion sensor)
    - Repairing the disk permissions
    - Verifying and repairing the disk
    - Using disk warrior boot disk to repair the disk
    - Downgrading from the 1.7 to the 1.6 EFI Firmware
Please help. I'm out of ideas.
    Thanks,
    David

I'm in the same boat, and I can't just replace my HDD..... I'm going to try and use my copy of TechTools plus to see if it spots the issue...
Recently I have had that 5-10 second slowdown. I thought it was one of my externals because at the time of the slowdown, I'd hear teh external start to spin. It was a 1TB drive, and I passed it off as nothing because I thought thats what 1TB USB drive need to error check.
Then, all of a sudden after taking my computer out of sleep mode (with no externals connected) my computer came to a standstill... I reinstalled OSx 10.6 and it was fine.
Now I am noticing a 10 second halt at regular intervals as the OP mentioned. In my console it has this:
12/31/10 4:53:28 PM kernel commaxtor_IOPowSec00_105-(B41VR3WH) handling stop request
    12/31/10 4:53:28 PM kernel commaxtor_IOPowSec00_105-(B41VR3WH) IssueModeSelectTimer: shortTime = 1

    12/31/10 4:53:28 PM kernel commaxtor_IOPowSec00_105-(B41VR3WH) IssueModeSelectTimer: complete
    12/31/10 4:53:28 PM kernel commaxtor_IOPowSec00_105-(B41VR3WH): IssueStopUnderDeviceControlCommand
    12/31/10 4:53:57 PM kernel disk0s2: I/O error.
    12/31/10 4:53:57 PM kernel
    12/31/10 4:53:57 PM kernel
    12/31/10 4:53:57 PM kernel hfs_clonefile: cluster_read failed - 5
Looking at this, I am now assuming that the problem lies with my external maxtor drive...
LUCKILY all of my info on my macbook is on another HD for time machine, so if my internal HD kicks the bucket, I'm safe. It's the maxtor one I'm worried about since it has my whole video production portfolio on it, lol.
