Computer Hardware Installation?

I am interested in buying some new peices of hardware for my computer such as a new graphics card, power supply, and a new computer case.  I don't know much about buiding a computer though.  I am wondering since i have the Geek Squad Tech Support 1 year plan if that means they will install all the hardware for free, or even at all.  Since im getting a new case i would need them to move everything from my old computer to my new.

Tech support covers : One year of unlimited in-store help, online chats, remote and phone support Includes virus removal, full diagnostics and repair of operating system and software issues for up to three computing devices
So... no hardware installation is not covered from that description. I'd contact your local store to get pricing from them.
If you like my post, or solution to your issue/question, go ahead and click on the little star by my name and/or accept the post as the Solution. It makes me happy.
I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

    Complete Hardware Installation Overview

Before I begin: Many experienced users have their own methods and tricks of the trade. This Guide is not intended to say other methods are not as good. Some experienced users may have better methods or find some steps unnecessary. This guide is simply based on a method that has worked many times for me.
If at any point you get errors or encounter a problem. Stop what you¡¦re dong, call your vendor or come into the forum and ask for help.
This guide also assumes you have done some preliminary research. Please be sure you have verified your hardware is compatible with the operating system you intend to install. Also be sure that ONE of the following exists:
    A. Your Power Supply is approved for your CPU by AMD.  Your vendor certifies your RAM will work with the motherboard. If uncertain, visit http://www.amd.com and contact your vendor
    B. Your vendor certifies your Power Supply and RAM will work with your CPU and motherboard
    C. An experienced forum user can tell you from personal experience that he has a stable system using the exact brand and model number of your power supply and RAM

INSTALLING THE VIDEO CARD, FLOPPY AND POWERING UP
    ==============================================
    31. Now its time to install your AGP or PCI video card. If you’re using an AGP card be sure the grey retention pin that sits at the end of the AGP slot is in the bent down position where it almost touches the motherboard. When moving this retention clip, be careful not to bump that capacitor right near the clip. Ya don’t want to damage it
    32. Firmly insert the AGP card into the slot until it’s fully inserted and the retention clip has popped up. If using a PCI video card be sure to install it in the “top” PCI slot (PCI slot1) Be sure the card is standing straight up in the case and then screw the card firmly into the case
    33. Stand the case up vertically and using a plastic twist tie or rubber bands be sure the remaining PSU power connectors are not going to fall into the case and dangle against the motherboard
    34. Attach your monitor, mouse (PS/2 preferably), and keyboard. Then plug in the power to your monitor and the power cord to the computer.
    35. Cross your fingers and press the power button to start it up
    36. As soon as the computer powers up, immediately start pressing the delete key to enter the BIOS set up
    37. Now that you’re in the BIOS set up, go to hardware monitor and watch the CPU temp. While sitting at the BIOS screen the temp should never exceed the mid 40 degrees worst case with an Athlon XP. Your temps probably will be lower.
    38. Now as frustrating as this step is just let the computer sit there for 20 minutes and do nothing. Many users feel this step is unnecessary but it’s a personal preference of mine. The idea is to let the CPU get sufficiently warm and make a firm bond and seal with the thermal compound or grease. Plus since it's the first time these components have been exposed to an electrical current, 20 minutes of settling in isn’t a bad idea before shutting down or rebooting. Go grab a cup of coffee, look inside the case and be sure your CPU fan is spinning etc Whatever floats your boat.
    39. If at any point in that 20 minutes your CPU temps exceed say 50 degrees for an Athlon XP or 60 degrees for a regular Athlon, shut down immediately and inspect your HSF and thermal compound installation. If unsure take the board in to your vendor for testing
    40. If after 20 minutes everything is ok, you now have a few choices to make. Now is an excellent time to flash your BIOS before you get all your components installed. Also if you plan on using a CPU fan that does not attach to the motherboard this is the best time to flash to the latest BIOS. If you’re not familiar with how to flash your BIOS – don’t. Either wait until you get help from people in the forum, or take the board to your vendor and they should be happy to flash it for you. I can tell you firmly that the BIOS v3.2, while not perfect, is quite stable and adequate for most set ups
    41. Now regardless of how you proceed now is a good time to make some settings in the BIOS. Go to the main page and load the letup defaults. Then go in and set your date and time. Also be sure that BIOS Flash protection is set to “Disabled” Also be sure “Clear NVRAM is set to Yes” Finally if you have an Athlon XP or any other processor that supports a 266 FSB, then you also want to go into Hardware monitor and set CPU/FSB to 133 BE SURE THIS IS SET PROPERLY PRIOR TO ANY BIOS FLASH
    42. Now choose to Exit saving changes
    43. The computer will reboot and stop at a prompt telling you to insert a floppy disk
    44. You can now power down wait 60 seconds and pop in the BIOS flash disk. Or if you’re not flashing, proceed to the next step

    ATTATCHING DRIVES
    =================
Assuming everything has gone smoothly so far, you¡¦re ready to attach your hardware
If you¡¦re planning on setting up RAID this will be covered in a later setup guide in a few days. If you need to set it up now, look for me or any experienced user in the forum and ask for help in setting up your jumpers drives, cables and the RAID BIOS If you're not setting up RAID, proceed with this guide
    45. Using either a regular IDE cable or one of the ATA/100 IDE cables that came with your motherboard, locate the end of the cable with the black connector. Plug this into your DVD or CDROM drive. On the back of your CDROM or DVD drive be sure the jumper is in the Master position.
    46. If you also have a CDRW drive or another CDROM drive attach this to the middle grey connector on the IDE cable. Be sure this drive has its jumper set as Slave. NOTE: if in your configuration you are planning on having a ZIP Drive. You will want to attach the zip drive to this connector, not the CDRW drive. Because ZIP drives are slowly being phased out and because ZIP drives are known to have problems with some operating systems and with some VIA chipsets, I try to avoid using these types of drives. CDRW drives work just fine. However if you must have a ZIP drive place it on this grey connector and jumper the ZIP drive as slave
    47. ONLY AFTER the ribbons are attached to the drives should you attach the cable to the motherboard. Take the remaining blue connector on the IDE cable and attach it to the White (Secondary IDE) connector on the motherboard. Be sure to use the method you used with your fingers and thumbs when installing the floppy cable to the motherboard to avoid bending the board
    48. Find the other ATA/100 cable that came with your motherboard and locate the black connector on that cable. Attach the black connector to your main hard drive. Set the jumper on the hard drive as Master if you¡¦re going to install a second slave hard drive. Jumper it as Master or Cable Select if it¡¦s a stand alone drive. The only exception is if you have a Western Digital Hard Drive. If you have a WD and its going to be a stand alone drive, the proper jumper setting is Single Refer to the drives owners manual for how to jumper the drive as Single for a Western Digital
    49. If you have a slave hard drive, jumper it as slave and attach the middle grey IDE connector. If because of a Zip drive you also have a CDRW drive still to install you can put it as the slave drive on this cable. But be warned that having the hard drive share the cable with an optical or ZIP drive will drastically reduce your hard drives performance (another reason to avoid ZIP drives in a standard configuration)
    50. Attach the remaining blue connector to the motherboards blue, non RAID IDE connector (Primary IDE) Remember to use your fingers and thumbs to avoid bending the board
    51. ONLY AFTER all the IDE cables are attached should you attach the power cables from the power supply. Now that all the drives are attached go ahead and pop in those power cables.
    =======================
    INSTALLING THE PCI CARDS
    =======================
    52. For your very first full boot up and first attempt installing the operating system, it¡¦s recommended to start with the least PCI cards necessary to avoid any errors. There is an exception to this. Because of how the Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating systems heavily depend on networking components, you might want to install any Ethernet (NIC) card you have now.
    53. Network cards work best and will install fine in either PCI Slot 2, Slot3 or Slot 4 on this particular motherboard. For many reasons here¡¦s what I suggest for now. If you have a Sound Blaster series sound card then install the NIC in Slot 2 or Slot 4. If you have no sound card or a non Sound Blaster card, install your NIC in Slot 3
    54. For now do not install any other PCI cards.
    55. Now its time to close up the case, power up and install your operating system
NOTE: Assuming you have no problems installing your operating system you can then add in the remaining PCI cards one at a time. Please refer to my Guide on PCI SLOTs which is after my GUIDE on BIOS settings
Also note that many people have been asking for help on the proper way to install their operating systems, critical updates, VIA drivers, and video and sound card drivers. For now if you need help ask in the forum. I will try to have a guide for Win 9X/ME and another for Windows 2000 and a third for Windows XP available in the forum soon.
    CONRATULATIONS!!!!!

  • Looking for a soundmax that supports my computer hardware...

Like the title says, I turned on my computer this morning and a message popped out that my Soundmax didn't load properly and needed to reinstall it. So I go to unistall a program in control panel and in my lack of knowledge in computers made me uninstall it(I should have rolled it back in device manager maybe...). Then after restarting, I don't have the soundmax installer in unistall a program and I have been desperately looking for a working one but all I got was errors saying it doesn't support my computer hardware even though it was made for my computer though. Anyone know how to get back Soundmax? And no I don't have a recovery partition...
I'm using HP Compaq dc7900 Small Form Factor Windows Vista Business 32-bit

  • Upgraded computer hardware. Now says can't activate my software

Hello, I can't use my Adobe CS5.5, because the program says I have installed it on two computers. Which isn't true. I have recently upgraded my computer hardware and had to reinstall the operating system. How can I go about fixing this?

I have all my original software with original license key.  I did read that, and like I said, for the interim I have downloaded from the link to try and get functional again until I can get this resolved.   But again, I paid a LOT of money for the Premium suite, and the downloaded version skips out on quite a bit.
I have run into many problems with the software installation via those download files.
I get the dreaded "insert disk 2"...but it won't allow you to continue.  I read on here about copying the one C:/create suite...what ever folder to the other one that is created.
Tried that and still same issue.
I cancel out of that, and I can use Photoshop.  But illustrator dies saying "Could not complete requested Operation."
I have read that it could be font related.  However, Have fewer fonts installed on this new build than I did before it crashed, and CS2 has worked FLAWLESSLY for me for years now.
I tried to use the  original disks after just successfully installing PS.  And it doesn't even like that.
I also tried to download the Illustrator only package from that site.  Once installed, it gives me the same error.
I'm running Windows XP Professional and I own CS2 Premium version 9.0.
This validation server issue is like Taking my old Ford into the dealership for an overhaul.  But because it's an old truck, I'm not allowed to have it back, but I'm allowed to have a permanent rental instead. Plus the radio is missing because Ford doesn't sell cars with Tape decks any longer.  I GET that it's end of life software.  But I bought it, I own it, and it works perfect for me....  I don't WANT to upgrade.  ESPECIALLY to this new subscription base.
    Thanks.
    Willy

  • Bootcamp Stops on "setup is inspecting your computer hardware configuration"

Just bought a new iMac for my business computer and can't get Windows XP SP2 to load. It stops on "setup is inspecting your computer hardware configuration". I am running BootCamp 3.0.4. It has the 2.5 Ghz i5 processor. I have read other support document say I need Windows 7. I have the same setup on MacBook Pro and it worked fine. I can't use Windows 7. I have programs that require Windows XP. HELP. Please no responses telling me to use Windows 7. I can't!

the 2011s are Sandy Bridge based and your OEM DVD for OS X doesn't have driver support from Apple.
As for windows 7 and legacy apps.... Windows 7 is pretty good at anything other than 16-bit apps, and even has XP mode - or you can try running XP in a VM as a guest OS in Mac OS X.
Your other MBP is 2010 model, no?
I assume Apple would have to develop new driver support and there are a lot of changes in the 2011 MBP. Apple isn't known for backward compatibility. Not when you have Intel graphics, TB, new processor family and SATA3 in there.

You should be able to install Mac OS X 10.7 or later on your 2011 MacBook Pro without issue, if it came with 10.6.3 as your signature suggests.  Mind you, any 2011 MacBook Pro must use the original 10.6 installer disc labelled MacBook Pro if it desires to have 10.6 installed on it.   The retail installer disc will not work on that model, nor will one from another age MacBook Pro, or other model labelled installer.  Also
10.7 came both on USB Flash drive and Mac App Store installer versions.   Both required either 10.6.6 minimum be pre-installed, or no Mac OS X operating system on the drive or partition it was to be installed on.
10.7.1 through 10.7.5 combo could be installed only once 10.7 had been installed.  A combo update is available for installing on top of any version of 10.7.  Otherwise only the preceding version could be updated to the next.
10.8 came only on Mac App Store installer.  It is available only to 10.6.8 and later users.
10.8.1 to 10.8.5 combo could be installed only once 10.8 had been installed.  A combo update is available for installing on top of any version of 10.8.  Otherwise only the preceding version could be updated to the next.
10.9 came only on Mac App Store installer. It is available only to 10.6.8 and later users.
Both 10.9 and 10.9.1 had a serious security vulnerability, which only 10.9.2 addressed.
10.9.2 combo could be installed only once 10.9 had been installed.
For all three Mac App Store releases, the partition to be installed on had to be GUID partition formatted according to Apple Disk Utility.

    Thanks a lot,
Yes, I also don't think they can go buy 3rd-party hardware and ship it to me. However, I asked this question since I am very upset from those online sellers who don't consider Yemen in their maps. So, all customers must request their needs from other closer countries.
Even the HP customer care team in Dubai, UAE, would not  have sent me the HP battery, and CPU cooling fan if I had purchased my laptop from Yemen.
First of all, even before this upheaval, no shipping to Yemen at all.
Yes, there is a major political upheaval in Yemen right now, however, to move the Yemen to independent country, and not dependent on the Gulf Arab countries, such as Saudi Arabia, United Arab emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, even the US, the UK, France which originally are allied with and have been protecting those Gulf Arab countries.
I always ask myself why Amazon.com, eBay.com, and others ship to Gulf Arab countries, and they don't ship to Yemen?????  I only saw that mydvddrive.com, dx.com are the only websites which can ship to Yemen, although I didn't try to order something from them for two reasons: first: I am afraid of not getting/receiving my orders since delivery address in Yemen is bad since Yemen doesn't have postal code. The other one is since they don't sell products I want to purchase.
Yemen is stereotyped as as dependent province to the gulf Arab countries, but it isn't correct. So, Yemen is even not considered in Time zone in almost all websites, however, Iraq(Baghdad), kuwait, UAE(Dubai), saudi Arabia(Riyadh), qatar (Doha), and Bahrain(Manama), and Oman(Muscat) are all considered. (Yemen is much lager than Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain) However, it is not considered larger in the time zone, and Computer Brand agents, online sellers, so on.
To be honest with you that I even didn't see that Yemen is considered in the Time zone for this forum, however, kuwait, Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Iraq are considered. why are only 'Iraq', Kuwait, Riyadh are considered as long as the time of Yemen is the same time for them?

  • ODS activation failures after new hardware installation..urgent

    Hi All,
I am working in PRD.There are 10 process chains which i need to monitor daily.Daily ODS activation fails in 4 of the 10 chains. The error message for two of the failures are,
Task 0040 during SID specification without confirmation
and for another process it is showing "DBIF_RSQL_SQL_ERROR" error.
manually I am doing steps and the activation is successful. These type of errors we are getting after the new hardware installation.
Could anyone let me know are there any patches to be applied inorder to avoid such type of errors.
Please advice me what to do.
    Thanks,
    Manjula

What is the patch your currently on at the moment.
It could also be some of the settings in RZ11 have been changed. You need to work with your basis people to resolve this.
DBIF_RSQL_SQL_ERROR is a common problem and usually due to not enough processor's available and the database gettings into a knot.
Check SM21 and ST22 for the more information on the issue.

Hi, I already have a 1st generation Ipod Nano which works fine. Just purchased a new 2nd generation Ipod Nano for my daughter and when connected to USB, get a message saying "A problem occurred during hardware installation.
