Computer insists correct password is invalid.

My iMac had it's internal harddrive die a few days ago and i had a new one put in and OSX 10.5.6 installed. The computer was running on the network in the mac store just fine. when i brought it home i tried to connect to the network via airport and it told me the WEP password was invalid.
The password is definitely correct. there is currently an iphone, mac mini, and macbook all running on this network and it's working fine. I've always used it in the past and the harddrive is brand sparkling new. I can't imagine what the issue could be.
Any help? i'm an idiot with this stuff.

The hard drive (new or old) would not be related to a wireless network issue.
Are you sure you are connecting to your network, instead of one of the other networks that is in range? If this is a fresh system on the iMac, it may have selected your neighbor's network.
Obviously, make sure you are remembering the password correctly. You may want to disconnect one of your other Macs from the network and re-enter the password to verify it works.

  • Does the computer lock me after a certain amount of failed password attmepts, even when i finally have the correct password? recently changed root account password, but then forgot today and when tried again didn't work.  if so, how long does lock last?

Ok. So I just changed my ADMINISTRATIVE ROOT PASSWORD the other day and when I tried to log in today I forgot it.  I tried different variations of
the password I had set, because I wasn't sure if i had maybe set it in Caps Lock or used a different number in the sequence.  I got the message several times
about "too many attempts, try again later".  Does the computer lock me from signing in even with the correct password after a certain amount of failed
attempts?  If so, how long does this lock last for?  When can I try again?  Or is there something I need to do to remove that lock now?  I'm pretty sure I
had the right password finally but it still wouldn't accept it.
Also, I don't have any other administrative users set up on my macbook pro.  I'm the only one who uses it, so I've always just used that original User from my
    original setup.

    Do this:
    1. Reboot
    2. Hold apple key + s key down after you hear the chime. (command + s on newer Macs)
    3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
    (Type these commands very carefully)
    mount -uw /
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    shutdown -h now
    4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can change the passord on the old one.

  • Can't connect to password protected wifi with the correct password.

So, here's the deal. I have a program on my Mac called Self Control. It's a program that allows you to block all access to either the entire internet or a select amount of websites that you choose from, for a specific time. I had it going today, and got so impatient that I decided to search on Google to see if there was a way to get around it, which I thought would be fruitless. Turns out I found out how to do it. I went to Date & Time Preferences and manually changed the date to after the specified time that the Self Control program was to go to. It worked, and tricked the program into believing the time was over. Happy me. But then, my computer automatically booted me off of my college roommates wifi, which is Apple Airport. I was like, "Weird, okay." So I tried connecting back to the wifi. As it should, it asked for the password, and I confirmed it with my roommate. Every single time I try to connect with the correct password, it keeps saying invalid password. I changed the date back to the correct date, and it still does this. Have any ideas on how to fix this? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

installing the package "network-manager-applet" allowed for the menu to properly work.  I didn't realize that it wasn't even installed until I tried your
    $nm-connection-editor
and realized that it wasn't a command on my system.
    Silly me.

  • I cannot update or buy apps because it keeps saying my itunes password is invalid.

I am able to log in on the computer with my apple id but when i try to buy apps or try to update my apps on my phone and it asks me for my password it keeps telling me my password is invalid.

Just make sure that the correct apple ID is on the phone for the iTunes store.  I had the same problem.  My Apple ID is through a hotmail account.  But for what ever reason with an upgrade it switched me to the mobile me account on my iPhone.

  • MacBook Pro versus U-verse (2WIRE): "password is invalid"..

I run into a frustrating problem, and I hope someone out there can suggest a solution/explanation.
I got the AT&T U-verse service. Overall I am very pleased. My wireless devices (iPhone, Macbook and one Macbook pro, all running OSX10.5) have been configured without a problem, as was the case with all the older, ethernet-linked iMac (OSX10.3). I am extending the range of the RG with an ethernet-linked AppleExpress, setup as WDS. this device has been assigned an IP by the RG and is happily broadcasting. In fact, I am logged on it at this moment. All is working; however, there is this one little problem... which stomped the online tech services at AT&T and the u-verse forum.
The issue is now with one of the 2 MacBook Pro's, the one I am using to configure the RG with, and the macbook. Once they logged on via the AppleExpress, they are now both denied access to the 2WIRE with the same password they used before. Both can however login via the AppleExpress subnet which has its own password, and once in, they get an IP (assigned by the RG, not the AppleExpress) and can ping and every other device in my LAN and manage the RG via the web interface. The RG lists these PC as an etherlinked device, which is correct since they are communicating via the AppleExpress which in-turn extends the wireless but is not configured as a router.
THe key is, If security is turned OFF on the 2WIRE RG, my MacBook Pro can log in without a problem. When security is enabled again, access is denied. something in the communication is not right.
Again, the Macbook and MacBook Pro were allowed access. Denial begun after logging off, logging back on via the AppleExpress, attempting to go back to the 2WIRE. All subsequent login attempts into the 2WIRE, with the same password that successfully allowed all the OTHER wireless devices to log on, failed. A reboot ( i know...) did not change anything. The message i keep getting is "password is invalid".
Given that the login is not a problem when security is off, and that the MAC filtering has these MacBooks enabled, and that they receive an IP without a problem when logged in via the AppleExpress, we came to the assumption that the problem may be in the Mac and how it delivers the WPA password to the 2WIRE.
I then cleared all the stored passwords from KeyChain- loged in again and typed the password- and was denied again.
In desperation, I gave my computer a manual IP (in case IPv4 issues were interfering)- nothing. can log in via AE.
restarted the RG- no help either.
Although I am logged on via the AE, and I can access the internet, and all is working, I am mystified as to what can be the issue blocking the MacBook from re-connecting with the RG. How is it possible that a correct password is read as "invalid" by the 2WIRE? what can I do to fix this?
Please help me figure this one out...

    Update
After a conversation with our IT guru at work, I did the following experiment:
    1) set the "DHCP lease" time to 1 hour
    2) log off the AE for the night and turn airport off on the MacBook
    3) in the morning, took my Macbook out of sleep, set the airport to "on" and to "join network"
    4) Select my 2WIRE, log in with the same password that was denied repeatedly--
AND I GOT IN, NO PROBLEM. the 2WIRE gave my Mac the same IP address it did when the PC log on to my LAN via the AE.
Now the not so happy news:
    5) switch out of the 2WIRE and onto the AE, no problem- got in, and was assigned the same IP as before.
    6) switch back to the 2WIRE.... got "invalid password".......
Hope that latest info triggers a "Eureka" moment for someone. I am still clueless as to what is going on.

  • HT5569 I am having trouble connecting to my wifi.  I put in the password (the correct password) and it tells me that it is the wrong password.  I just purchased this iPad and cannot seem to get connected.  My laptop connects with a pin not a password.

I just bought a iPad and am trying to set it up.  I have WiFi at my home but cannot get on with my iPad.  My laptop asks for a pin number to join and the iPad asks for a password.  I enter the correct password and it tells me that it is incorrect.  I have talked to my WiFi carrier and they tell me that they do not know what it could be.  Can someone please help me figure this out.

connectng with a pin # will not work with the ipad. you need to find out exactly what the actual wifi password is.
pin and push buttons are used by wifi protected setup. which is an optional feture of WPA
    here are some ideas
go to the routers home page (typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254) and see if you can click on "show password"
get the manual out, it should have the default user name and password you may need to access the routers page
if your windows computer connects, then you should be able to right click the wifi connection and click on show password as well. this is somewhere in the properties page of the wifi connection
also with windows its a good idea to click on "save wifi connection to usb drive" this can be used to connect other windows computers and xbox game consoles as well
if your laptop computer is a mac book you can go to the keychain or icloud keycahin and reveal the actual passowrd as well.
look at the actual router it might have directions on a sticker on how to access the routers configuration pages
if you enter the wrong password on the ipad you need to forget the network and try again

  • Unable to Unlock External Hard Drive w/ Correct Password

    Specs
    Retina MacBook Pro
    Mac OS 10.9.4
Encrypted External Hard Drive with Time Machine application
    Issue
I’m not able to unlock my ext. hard drive with the password stored in Keychain Access or by manually entering the password. When I plug my ext. hard drive on another computer the password works just fine.
I also noticed that when unlocking the ext. hard drive with an incorrect password the window will shake. When I unlock using the correct password it'll stall for about 10 seconds before it shakes. I’m not sure if that’s an indication of anything.
I formatted the ext. hard drive and encrypted it again. It works fine for a little bit before the same issue crops up again and the same password no longer unlocks the external hard drive. Again, it’ll unlock just fine on another computer.
Steps I've done so far in attempt to resolve the issue:
    Keychain First Aid
    Reset My Default Keychain
    Repaired Disk Permission
    Unlocking via Disk Utility
    Formatting the external hard drive
    Help!
I’ve come to the conclusion that it must be related to Keychain Access, the OS, or something else on my computer that’s preventing me from unlocking it. Does anyone have any clue why this is happening and what I can do to repair the issue?

    Hi Kevin,
Its "Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted)" and its partitioned

    It shouldn't be. try this:
go to the System/MobileMe preference pane and log out of MMe.
login with a bogus username and password like "Ying" and "Yang". This clears the caches.
login with your correct username and password.

You've connected the iPad via cable to your computer, and your computer's iTunes is up-to-date ? If it's icon isn't showing then try one of these troubleshooting pages :
PC : iPhone, iPad, or iPod not recognized in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support
Mac : If you don't see your connected device in iTunes for Mac - Apple Support
If the iPad is disabled then you'll need to reset the iPad back to factory defaults, after which you can restore to your backup

  • Ipod touch rejects correct password for home wifi/router

My ipod touch can get unsecured wifi ok (sometimes, which is another discussion) but when I set up a Linksys wireless router at home, my laptop is able to use the wireless but the ipod touch sees the router's name, but rejects the correct password. (I did doublecheck the password by going into the IP address for the Linksys.) Why would my ipod touch not be able to access my own secured network when using the correct password? So I spent some time with Linksys on the telephone and they had me put a long number that they saw in the wireless security tab into the password line. Now there is a check beside my router's name, but I get the message "Safari cannot open the page" when I try to surf. The error was: Operation could not be completed. Invalid argument". I tried a couple more apps (Weather channel, google map, facebook) and the time circle just keeps going around. Why is my ipod touch not working, here?

Does the iOS device connect to other networks?
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?

    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

  • ICloud rejects CORRECT password when logging in

Every time I log in to my computer (or restart), I get a window that asks me for my iCloud password.  Even though I enter it correctly, the window “wiggles” and clears out the password.  Multiple attempts to re-enter the password results in the same symptoms.  I’ve even reset the password and tried with this new password and the same thing happens.  The only way to make the window go away is to click on Cancel, not once, but twice.  I know the password is correct, because I can go to iCloud.com and log in successfully.  That same password also works with my Apple ID any time a password is requested, further reassuring me that I’m using the correct password.  Why is it continually being rejected at login?

I have this too. I had it for Facetime, but I logged out of it, but to log out of icloud i need to go into System Preferences, but it crashes every time i click on the Icloud icon. But only crashes for Icloud, everything else works fine.

  • Unable to access my Administrator User Account with my CORRECT password.

The correct password for the Peter Thiess Administrator User account is bandicoot. All I get is the jiggle. I managed to change the password for the account by booting up with OS X Installer disk with the "C" key. Went to Utilities - reset password. Changed password in appropriate fields, added a hint and clicked Save. When I logged on again, the account accepted the new password with the note:
"you are unable to log in to the user account Peter Thiess at this time"...and THEN the screen jiggled.
Still no access to all my main stuff including my iTunes library that I built over the past 4 yrs.
Some weeks ago I opened my secondary acct. (Peter Alexander), which I created for house guests to play. Since I never use this account, I wanted to refresh my memory as to what I had on it. While I was here, I decided to delete "cache" and "cookies" from 2 libraries in the account. I also placed 2 or 3 folders that "seemed" empty (0Mb was in the bottom of the window of the files) in the trash. I don't remember where I plucked those folders from, from Peter Alexander acct. (If a folder is in the computer, even if it seems empty - there must have been a reason for it to be there.) Put them all in Trash and chose the Secure Delete Trash. The beachball started spinning...too long. Attempted to Stop Emptying Trash, so I could swith over to plain old Empty Trash and be done with it. Wasn't allowed to and the beachball kept spinning. This was taking too long, and I wanted to log into my main Peter Thiess Administrator account again. Attempted Restart - spinning ball. Attempted Shut Down, Log Out Peter Thiess, and Force Quit...more spinning bball. Finally I just held down the Power button. That turned it off.
Rebooted. Went back to the Peter Alexander account to finish emptying Trash. Trash finally emptied. Clicked Restart, got back to the opening window with both my accounts listed and clicked
Peter Thiess this time. Entered correct password and got "Peter Thiess does not have account privileges at this time" Tried several times, same result each time. Went to Help, then System Prefs, and finally Accounts, and discovered the Peter Thiess Administrator account was de-selected (gray instead of black lettering)?? Anyway, I tried several more times with my known, positively password-then tried some variations until the window "you tried passwords too many times, try again later".
Took the laptop to the MacSupportStore in Brooklyn, and due to a misunderstanding had the password to the Peter Alexander account, instead of the Peter Thiess account changed. When this mistake was pointed out, they investigated the correct account this time and told me the HD is dying, and that it would cost @ $400 for data rescue/retreval and a new HD. Not having any discretionary funds, I opted to get a Mercury external 500Gb HD instead. I want to rescue my data from my Peter Thiess Administrator account before the internal HD totally gives up the ghost. Suggestions? With deepest appreciation, Peter Thiess (alias - joblo22)
