Computer is moving very slowly

My computer is moving slowly, compared to my wife's (newer) MacBook. I have deleted much of the unnecessary files, but this didn't improve the situation much. What else can I do?
Also, is there any maintenance that I should be doing on a regular basis to keep the computer processing systems "healthy"? If so, I'd love to know what that maintenance is and how frequently I should be doing it.
Thanks in advance,
Nathan Meffert

Is your hard drive more than 85% full?
Try Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
If your Mac functions better that way, go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. Boot normally and test. If not go to Users/(yourname)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving ~(yourHome)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
Let us know.

  • App Store moving very slowly in new OS X Mavericks.

I just upgraded to Mavericks and everything seems fairly good, but the App Store is moving very slowly compared to how it did in the last OS X. It takes far longer to load and remains on a grey screen while it's loading. In the last OS, the loading was instant. The internet I was using right this moment is faster and more reliable than was I usually use, so I have to assume that it's not related to the internet. Has anyone else been having this issue? I know Mavericks is really new so I am expecting some bugs for a few weeks but this is a bit annoying!
I am using a MacBook Air, 13 inch, very new computer.

    Hi,
It's been a few hours now with no difference. I admit that I don't know how long it takes to index stuff since this is my first Mac, I've only had it a few months and I'm still learning an awful lot. n_n; About how long will it take? Also, I saw someone mention something about SMC reset (I believe) on Airs after installing Mavericks, is that something I need to do?

  • It will load a game from Facebook, but is moving very slowly. My adobe is updated, but still moving slowly

When I am logged into Facebook and am attempting to play a game. It will load up the game, but to perform actions within the game it will either not do them at all or will perform them very delayed, like 10 minutes sometimes. I have updated my adobe flash, but this is still moving SLOW!!!!!

    Hey TheDomesticBlonde,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, the computer is running very slowly and is freezing a lot. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
OS X Yosemite: If your Mac runs slowly
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, move files to another disk, then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk.
Quit any apps you’re not using.
If you have problems with your disk, use Disk Utility to verify and try and fix any issues.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a good one,

  • Photosmart eAll-in-one C310a prints from computer and scans very slowly.

When I highlight a part of an article on my computer to print and then select print preview, it takes about 2 minutes for “as laid out on screen” to show. Then when I select “as selected on screen” it takes about 2 minutes to show. It takes about 2 minutes to change from portrait to landscape. The Photosmart eAll-in-One C310A Printer on my Wi-Fi home network takes about 4 minutes to scan one page. It used to scan fast. Something has changed recently to cause my printer to print and scan very slowly. I have Microsoft Windows 7.

My computre is running very slowly, what can I do to speed it up again?

You could post in the notebook and Mac OS forums, look under the hood and diagnose the patient. Figure what you did or are doing. You can also relolad the OS and files from backup.

  • Installed Mac OS X v10.7 Lion yesterday, computer is running very slowly as is my WiFi.  Any suggestions?

Since installing Mac OS Lion, my iMac is running slowly as is my WiFi, any suggestions?

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Restart.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
To boot from the Recovery HD restart the computer. After the chime hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Or restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys.

  • Thunderbird runs very slowly after latest round of 11 updates from Microsoft, restoring computer to earlier date fixes problem.

    Thunderbird version 24.4.0
Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1
Microsoft uploaded 11 new updates ( 7 updates for Windows 7 and 4 for Office 2010) on 9 April 2014. After automatically installing updates on my computer Thunderbird runs very slowly, i.e., every time anything is selected, Thunderbird give error "Thunderbird fails to response" which takes about 1 minute to clear. I restored computer to earlier date that did not have these updates and Thunderbird works OK.
Also updates changed default search engine in Firefox 28.0 from Google to Bing ! ! !

    Appears that you are right.
McAfee was running a scan continuously. I uninstalled it. Then ran all of the Microsoft updates. Finally I reinstalled McAfee and turned off real time scanning of e-mail.
Thunderbird appears to be working OK now.

  • Internet loading very slowly

I have a 3yr old iMac G5 that all of a sudden has started moving very slowly on the internet. We have broadband that is moving like dial-up. Our ISP has checked checked out our connection and can't find anything wrong. Our speedtest rates as off the charts on their speedtest, even during times when it's moving slowly. It did get a slow speed rating of 800 occasionally between very fast speeds. When pinging, it shows 100% packet loss, but the ISP says that's not possible if I can eventually get to a website, so my network utility must be broken.
I've noticed this problem shortly after my husband began playing games on POGO. Could this somehow effect our speed?
Is there anything I can try?
    Thanks, Michelle in AL

    To Apple Discussions.
Consider upgrading your OS. The latest version is OS 10.4.10. Judging from your system info, you have quite a bit of catching up to do.
How much RAM do you have? I play POGO games & that site is very java/flash orientated.
After playing those type of online gaming involving java/flash it is a good idea to repair permissions & restart after you are finished game playing.
I even do the above on the games I've installed from a CD.
It's also a good idea to clear out the browser(s) cache. If you have cable or DSL, set it to 0 (zero). And, while you're at it, delete the browser(s) history and/or set it to a lower number.
Mine is set for 1 (one day).

  • Just installed snow leopard and office for mac - now my computer is running very slow.  Why?

I've recently installed snow leopard and office for mac - now my computer is running very slowly - why?

Which version of office did you install? If its 2008 the early version had some problems and you will want to update the office software to i think it is 12.3.0
If it is 2011 you might want to do the same thing.

  • Why does my iPhone 4 not charge correctly?  Problem is definitely with the phone and not charges or chords.  Phone will charge but very slowly and no icon comes on.  Computer and iTunes doesn't recognize it a being connected.

My iPhone 4 quit charging correctly.  It does charge but very slowly and icon doesn't indicate it as charging.  I've checked cables and charges and the problem is definetily with the phone.  My car stereo no longer recognizes it as a device.  Neither does the computer.  The real strange thing to me is that when I plug it into my old klispch speaker dock it will play songs.  My battery life is good when it is charged so I don't think its the battery. I've tried resetting the phone and cleaning the charging port.  I'm out of warranty.
Would disconnecting the battery possibly reset it from some glitch or is the charging port got some bad contacts?

I checked with the Genius Bar.  It was a new dilema to the lady that was helping me.  She took it to a back room and worked on it but it came out the same.  She gave me some options for repair or credit for replacement.
I just kept the phone and put up with slowly charging it by plugging it in and then turning it off.
I couldn't transfer anything from itunes.
I finally got fed up and bought a new charging port for $10. and a toolkit for $3.  I looked up a video on youTube for the replacement and did it.
That solved all the problems, it was the charging port, must have been some bad pins or something because it patially worked.

  • My computer writes very slowly with Indesign CS6

If I open a document save with Indesign CS2 in CS6 my computer writes very slowly. Y must wait two or three seconds until appears the text.
    But if I open a new document in CS6, I haven´t problems.

Do you happen to have many linked text boxes? If so, this can happen if too many of them are linked. I also had this a couple of times. The only solution then was to split them up again, which can not be done directly, but with one of the scripts named SplitStory.jsx.

  • Computer running very slowly

Computer has been running very slowly for some time and I have decided to try and find out what is wrong.
I have several folders on my desktop, some of which contain many jpegs.  I know I they are causing part of the problem.  Can I just put all the folders into one folder and move that new folder to the documents folder in my home folder?
I have never emptied my downloads folder.  Does that play a role in my computer being slow?
I don't know how much of these are relevant but maybe?
Computer came with 10.6 and has been updated to Yosemite.
I have a bootable clone on my external HD which I use as a backup.  Today, for the first time, I can't boot from the external.
I am the only user of the machine, but I do have another account.  Last night I tried to switch users and it just wouldn't switch.  I waited over 5 minutes.
I have emptied all trash (desktop, iTunes, iPhoto) and have reset Safari (clear history and website data).
I looked at activity monitor and though I'm not sure what I'm looking I copied these numbers:
for the CPU %used was System .71 (and that was in red), user .91 and idle 98.2
for the memory I have 2.0G memory and am using 1.94
for disk activity data read/sec is 758 kb and data written /sec 12.0 KB (in red)
    Thanks for any help/advoce.
