Computer is powering off - hard to restart

Hello everyone,
Totally new here - and timid about posting since my computer skills are very limited.
My G5, OSX 10.3 will turn itself off after about 10 or 15 minutes of non-use. It now is becomming difficult to turn it back on. Making whirring noises.
Nearest service center is 200 miles from me. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello Momfisher,
First of all, Welcome to the Apple Discussions Forums!
Just wanted to post in to reassure you to not be timid here.....
There are alot of very nice folks here and more than accustomed to helping new mac users or new computer users for that matter. Just didn't want you to feel timid about asking for help here. Either someone like myself or others here can sort things out pretty good but sometimes it just takes time posting back and forth to understand the problem correctly.
Don't feel shy posting back if someone has suggested something you do not understand and asking for them to explain further. Don't feel embarrased about a lack of knowledge etc.......We all have been there....believe me...lol))
That all said, is the computer a Power Mac G5 (a tower with a seperate display) or an iMac G5 (all in one desktop computer)? Not sure if that matters at this point but all the info posted may help to solve the problem.
Off hand I am thinking it might be a sleep issue. Are you at all familiar with Sleep settings on the computer?
I'm not sure about the "whirring noises" yet (perhaps the computers drive spinning etc.) but I would check the Sleep settings first to rule that out. These are found in your System Preferences/Hardware/Energy Saver settings. When you click on the Energy Saver icon a pane will open showing the "sleep" settings. Let us know where these are set.
Post back with all your questions and I'm sure I or someone here will be glad to help as much as we can.
best,
littleshoulders [:-)

  • How to make a powered off hard reset

How to do a hard reset?I have tried the 3+*+call key but it just shows the nokia screen and then asks for the lock code.Thanks.

Always remember to backup your phone before performing resets as your data may be lost.
The "3 finger deep reset". With the phone powered off, depress and hold these three keys simultaneously "*" "3" "green phone" and then power on phone using the on/off button whilst keeping all four keys depressed until you hear start-up tone.
The default lock code is usually 12345 unless you changed it.

  • Computer spontaneously powers off

About a year ago, I had problems with my MacBook spontaneously powering off (several times a day). The battery life indicator could read as high as 90%+ when this could occur. It would happen while both plugged in and not. I visited the genius bar on a couple of occasions and the techs witnessed it occur, but could not locate any problems in the diagnostics - including a test on the battery. After considering replacing the somewhat new laptop, I decided to try a new battery as a last resort $$$. This cured the problem!! Unfortunately though, here I am about eight months later with the same symptoms starting up again. This time, I know that a new battery will help (a pricey fix every few months), but I'm wondering what might be corrupting my batteries. Has anyone else had these issues? Does anyone know what might be causing this corruption? Thanks!

If you have the late-2008 unibody MBP, your battery's original full charge capicty was about 4600mAh, so the capacity is OK, especially if you haven't calibrated it lately. If I were you, I'd reset the SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If that doesn't change anything, and the battery's anomalous behavior doesn't allow you to calibrate it, following this article to the letter...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490
...then the battery would seem to be defective and should be replaced under warranty.

  • Think Station S20 speaker noise by powering off

    Hi,
my Thinkstation S20 (4157) always makes a noise (internal and/or external speakers) when I power it off,
it sounds a little bit like if you power off a guitar amp while the guitar is still plugged in.
I´m sorry for the bad  descreption.
The noise is only by powering off, not during restart, on win and linux.
    Bios version is  1.39.
Do you have the same on your systems or is it somehow a failure on my S20?
    Thanks for your answers!
Edit: Could this be a solution? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line_filter

that one is new to me.   it could be tied somehow to power management in Ubuntu but i honestly don't know.
admittedly, i haven't used Linux for over a decade, back when you had to hack your own XF86Config files using hsync/vsync data direct from chipset manufacurer datasheets.   these days everything is point-and-click.   lol
anyway, you could try playing with various processor power management settings in the BIOS to see if that helps.

  • Yoga 11s powers off in some 3d games, but only on battery!

I have had my Yoga 11s for less than one week, and I love it, except for one strange problem. When I'm running certain 3D games (only when on the battery), the computer suddenly powers off with no warning. If I am plugged in, then this doesn't seem to happen. I am able to run 3DMark all the way through with no crash, and Mirror's Edge and Awesomenauts run just fine. However, some 3d games such as Trine 2 and Microsoft Mahjong cause this shutdown to happen.
So far, I have tried: updating the graphics driver to the latest version (from Intel), updating the chipset driver (from Lenovo's site), updating Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver (from Lenovo's site). I have also updated the Lenovo Energy Management Driver. I've tried tweaking various power plan settings as well, but I'm mystified. It seems like an overheating issue, but why only certain games, and only when on battery?
I'd love any pointers for solving this. I love this laptop otherwise, so far.
*update* The same thing happens with Dead Space 3. Graphics set to low, and vsync is turned on. Laptop powers down with zero warning on battery. Seems to be running fine when plugged in. Are the fans not being used to their full potential when the laptop is on battery? Anyone with any ideas????
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I believe that I have solved the problem. After further observation, it seemed that the fan was never getting activated at full speed on battery, as it was when plugged in. This would logically lead to overheating. I downloaded the newest driver for the "Intel Dynamic Platform & Thermal Framework" from Lenovo's website, and this appears to have fixed the issue! I seem to be able to run Dead Space 3, Microsoft Mahjong, and Trine 2 on battery without a shutdown. I will test more extensively and post a confirmation later.
I hope this might help someone else, if anyone runs into the same problem.
On the driver download page for the Yoga 11s, look for "Intel DPTF Driver".

    Hello TJLapplesupportcom,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Please follow the troubleshooting steps below to resolve this issue you're having with your iPhone.
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
My issue is still not resolved. What do I do next?

  • Hard Drive Light remains on even when system is powered off

HP xw8600 Workstation running XP SP3
In the past couple of weeks I am getting a lot of blue-screen errors with varying error codes, mostly pointing to problems with the C: drive. But what troubles me is that my hard drive activity light remains lit constantly, even when the system is powered off. The only way to make the light go out is to physically unplug the power cord from the computer. As soon as I plug the power cord back in, the HDD LED lights up.
I have Googled, Yahooed, and Binged this problem to death, and gotten nothing but pages and pages of why the hard drive would be busy when the machine is powered up. But powered down?
I ran HP's hardware diagnostics (found no problems, it never does) and have even disconnected the hard drive and moved it to another identical box (we have about 25 xw8600 boxes) and the problem did not follow. The HDD LED on this box remains lit with the power off and no hard drives connected.
I should note that the power light functions properly, I have checked the wiring and it's not backwards.

Hello WAVYTV, The symtoms you describe sound suspiciously like a faulty motherboard.
There may be a possibility that you could also have a faulty power supply.

Its been like this for awhile and I can not fix it

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
