Uninstall the AVG anti-virus software. It doesn't offer much protection, and can cause slowdowns.

I want to upgrade my MacBook Pro 5,2 to Lion, but specs says i need intel core 3 and i have intel core 2, there will be a problem? my computer will run slow? I will need to reinstall my programs again?

i recently upgraded to Lion and i find that my computer is running slow and applications are crashing. For example I have Word 2011 for Mac and it crashes all the time I end up losing my work. It often happens when I'm in class using notebook and when I press record my computer starts thinking and it freezes.
Also, I feel that it overheats often and my battery runs out pretty quickly. I had the macbook (black) and this never happened before. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if there is something with my computer.I bought my computer summer 2010, I don't think this should be happening. Please Help......This is exactly what keeps happening to mine too. I was at a conference taking notes, and I was
using the Notebook template, and doing some audio recording simultaneously. About 3 hours into the conference (not consistently recording, but on and off with the sessions) my file wouldn't save anymore, saying something like "File cannot be modified while in use with another program" and "Invalid file name" when I would go back into my folder to look for it). I tried installing some updates from Microsoft, and when I restarted, I was at least able to open my old notes again, and so far it looks like the audio was working. However, today at the conference, the same thing happened again, but I wasn't actively recording any audio (though after I had copy and pasted my second file of notes into the original, I went back to using it after re-naming it).
Does the crash happen to you under similar cirucumstances? The update might help a little, but it is definitely not the solution. Does anyone have any solutions? Lion shouldn't be this buggy... I moved to Mac to get away from the garbage of bugs and compatibility issues... -
i have 4 ipods on itunes but my computer was running slow so i put windows 7 on it but it wants me to sync my ipod but if i do i will lose all my music on my ipod how do i take my music and send it to my playlist so i can sync myipod so i won't lose any music
Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device. Unless you have the music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
As for you own music, you may have to use a third party software. A good Free one is called Sharepod which you can download from Download.com here:

My computer is running slow after Yosemite install -but in the Mail program, when I open an email and then open the attachment -all is good -when I close the attachment the Mail program goes away, and I have to reopen it in my Dock -every time.
I tried this, but no luck. I went to Previous System>Users. There is nothing inside the "Users" folder, so I hit a dead end.
I can find my new e-mails -- those that came in since I re-installed the system -- in my NEW system (which I did to see if I was correctly understanding the advice), by going to Users>Home>Library>Mail>POP account name>Inbox.
Let me add a new question: I am running PhotoShop C3. It opens OK, and I can use it, but when it opens I get this message: "One or more files for Adobe Application Support folder are missing. Please re-run the PhotoShop installer."
I don't like re-installing working programs if I can avoid it, because it always seems to lead to other issues. Any idea what files are missing, and where it/they might be in the Previous System folder?
thanks

My computer is running slower and slower.
My computer is running slower and slower. The umbrella spins a lot. Even with only one or two applications opened.
First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long. -
My computer is running slow, what can I do to fix it? I keep seeing a color wheel as a cursor...
Have a look here...
macworld.com/mac-troubleshooting-what-to-do-when-your -computer-is-too-slow.
Basically...
1) Make sure you have enough Free Hard Drive space for your Mac to Perform as expected...
Rule of thumb is about 15 to 20 GB
2) And adding more RAM is always a prudent move...
You can use these Links to check which RAM is suitable for your Mac...
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/
Go to http://www.crucial.com
It is Important to get the Correct and Matching RAM
Those sites also have videos on how to Install RAM should you need it... -

My computer is running slow and when typing the letters wait to show up. What can I do?
When was the last time you booted the system?
-
I haven't used my computer in a month, so when I turned it on, I saw it was running slow. The circle that is used to load the page kept coming up and it took sometime for things to load up. I tried to go Into safe mode, and it worked, but I know your limited on what you can do in that world. I also tried to repair the disk but it kept giving me an error message. How can I resolve this problem?
Time Machine is a back up you have to set up to back up before there is a problem like a hard drive failure.
It is possible to recover files from a failed drive, but it is an expensive proposition.
There is a faint hope that an app like Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro might repair the drive. You could try making an appointment at an Apple store and ask a technician there to take a look... the diagnosis will not cost you.

After installing lion, my computer is running slower and having delays connecting to network
please help me resolve my problem. after installing lion my system was running great for about a week. suddenly it is having trouble connecting to the internet, running slow and the history pages are appearing without asking for them.. unable to get my homepage when opening up, just get a white screen. if i go to the history, i can get the homepage. Only able to access my homepage by waiting for ever or getting it from the history.
please helpPeter, thank you for responding. No, I am not referring to the initial start up. I downloaded Yosemite over a week ago and feel it is running very slow when switching websites. Also, I have experienced numerous hangups causing me to force quite much more than before.
I just cleared my Safari history (I am guessing that is what you meant by "clean the old internet-caches" and restarted Safari. I will see how it goes.
I uses a file called "Desktop" from my IPhoto library for my desktop pictures. It contains about 20 pictures. I configured it that way in Preferences, but it seems whenever I shut down and restart my computer it reverts to the generic picture of Yosemite. As for the question mark and "Update Needed" showing on my startup log in screen, I think I fixed that by changing my password in Preferences.
No that I have cleared the Safari history, I will see how things go. -
I was told by a second source store today that the hard drives in an iMac 07 model run slower with time, mine is a little over three years old. Is this an accurate statement?
Computer slow downs can be caused by numerous things, age is not one of them. There is some really good reading here, I'm sure if you look 25 Ways to Speed Up Your Mac closely you will be able to regain some lost performance.
BTW in your signature you list some antivirus software....that could be a cause right there as it's not needed on a Mac.

After installing Yosemite my computer is running slower
I installed Yosemite and noticed a big difference in the speed of my MacBook Pro. A speed test indicates in am getting 25 down and 6 up, yet when changing websites I find response is much slower.
Also, after shutting down and restarting the login screen no longer shows the picture I use and instead has a question mark with "Update Needed". Further, my Desktop setting is changed to that picture from Yosemite.Peter, thank you for responding.
All of the sudden my computer is running slow
