Computer is slow after running flash

I'm running Flash player 11,8,800,94 with Firefox 23.0.1 under Window 7 Pro 64-bit (with all the latest bug fixes) on a Dell Studio 1558 (core 4 CPU)  and have this problem: After viewing a Flash movie under Firefox, my system slows to a crawl, while CPU usage (per Task Manager) shows nearly 100% -- even after I quit Firefox -- and even when I am doing only mundane things like opening a text file in Notepad.  Only re-booting helps then.
I followed these instructions [http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1018071] to disable Flash protected mode. Not only did this not fix my problem, it induced a new one: After viewing 5 to 10 minutes of flash movies, my system would suddenly power off with no warning I removed the line "ProtectedMode=0" which I had added to C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\mms.cfg and the sudden power-off problem no longer recurred.
So I completely uninstalled Flash Player and the problem did not recur--of course, since it only happens after playing a Flash movie. But then again I couldn't play Flash movies. So I reinstalled Flash player--the latest version, straight from Adobe--and as soon as I played my first movie, the CPU usage shot up and stayed up around 80% even though I was doing nothing! I killed the Flash Player Plugin from Task Manager and the CPU usage did not drop. Task Manager says that it's all going to ordinary things that shouldn't take any time, like an idle Firefox session and even 14% to Task Manager itself. Something lurking in my computer is making everything inefficient. It will be OK after I reboot, until I play my next Flash video.
By the way, this problem only happens after playing Flash videos through the Adobe Flash player plugin to Firefox. I played some FLV files using the stand-alone FLV Player from Applian (based on the VLC player), and had no troubles at all.
So, the obvious questions are, why is this happening and how can I prevent it?  I'm getting tired of re-booting just to get my computer back after each web site which pops up a movie.

My daughter had an ASUS netbook with Win 7 and it did this with FF and "The Sims 3". As soon as she opened the game or played a YouTube video, the fan would "kick up" so high that it sounded like someone was vacuuming the carpets. I updated the video drivers and that solved the game problem, but I had to "bite the bullet" and reinstall Firefox COMPLETELY (as in: I dumped her Firefox profile and mine from the HD). Reinstalled Firefox and suddenly we had a quiet netbook.
I use a lot of plugins in FF, and FlashBlock used to be one of them. I didn't reinstall it on the reload and it seemed THAT was what kept the fan from revving up so high with Flash videos. It was sending the Flash Container plugin to 100% when it tried to block Flash ads. I had tried disabling it before uninstalling FF, but it still pushed the CPU to the max, so a complete reinstall was all I could do.

  • Youtube loads slow after Shockwave Flash 11.5 r502 update

youtube loads slow after Shockwave Flash 11.5 r502 update, never had this problem before. the browser i am using is google chrome. everything is updated. i have a download speed monitor on, it shows the youtube videos downloads 200kb/s regardless the resolution and my internet is 1500kb/s. i thought it might be the monitor but i turn it off the videos still loads very slow. i dont know what to do.

We apologize for the inconvenience.  We're aware of the issue, and working diligently to get it resolved.
The issue appears to be limited to older Flash 8/ActionScript 2 content.  If you have access to the ActionScript source, there are a couple workarounds here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4841531#4841531#4841531.

  • Computer extremely slow after Yosemite

Hi!  My computer became very slow after updating to Yosemite.   And when I try to force quit applications, I see that the one creating conflict is something called Safari (or sometimes MAIL) web content.  I have no idea of what that is or why they are open or ...
I would appreciate all help.  Thank you

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • My Macbookpro shuts off after running flash

    Hi Everyone
My Macbook pro shuts down when I run flash programs...it's not all of the time though. I can get away with some video sites, like YouTube...but when running more intensive .swf's such as games, my macbook pro shuts completely off like a desktop computer losing power. It sounds like a fan on the right side of my computer turns on for half a minute and then the whole thing shuts down. I can use this as a warning to close down all of my programs, which sometimes prevents my computer from shorting.
I know that flash is a rather memory intensive program, especially on macs. Id assume this is a heatsink problem, but I'm wondering if it's my memory.
I can't remember when I first started having this problem but it might have been around when I upgraded my ram to two gigabytes.
my macbook pro is the very original, 1.85 ghz
I can't remember what ram was in it...it was the stock apple ram, 512 megs.
    I now have
2 GB 667 MHz ddr2 sdram inside. If you guys don't think ram could do this I will take it to a genius bar.
    thanks!

I'm gonna have to wait on the hardware test...unfortunately my install disk is packed far far away..but I'll be able to get it eventually.
The upgrade was a good recomendation, I thought it was going to work...played a game for about 15 minutes, and my computer shut down...
As far as my computer reaching the a critical heat...it just seems funny to me that this is isolated to only flash.
I primarily use this computer for work...For a long period of time every day I am running a combination of photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver, indesign, etc...along with itunes, mail, sometimes quicktime. It's only when flash comes into to play either combined with other programs or just a flash swf running through firefox that my computer shuts off.

  • MacBook Pro running slow after USB flash drive

I mount a Kingston USB flash drive to my 30 days old MacBook Pro running Lion 10.7.4
My Mac didn't recognize, so I inserted another one and it did recognize it.
And I notice my mac was running slow, some task that I did the day before (illustrator cs6) were really fast.
But after that USB flash drive it went slow, I thought it was and error and reebot it, also cleaning out the Cache and other stuff with CleanMyMac.
But it continues to run slow.
Please if someone knows what I can do I will appreciate it.

  • Computer EXTREMELY slow after download

I have a Macbook Pro running Leopard. Last night I downloaded a large number of fonts (all free legal fonts, fyi ), although while it was downloading I was unsure of exactly how many I was downloading. When all was said and done it turned out there were about 30,000 fonts in the package. Although it was more than I was expecting, it was under a gig in file size so I didn't see any issues installing them. I installed all of them but last night had no issues. I turned off my computer when I went to sleep.
This morning I went to turn my computer on and found it to be EXTREMELY slow. It took 20 minutes for it to even turn on in the first place, it took 20 minutes to open the finder and its taken an hour for the library folder to open and I STILL can't get into it. Obviously the solution is to delete the fonts, but I can't do that if I can't get into the font folder.
Is there a way to delete things in "safe mode" or something? Because obviously I can't do it through the standard display.

A suggestion: boot up from another OS that can read hfs+, then delete the offending fonts.
If you have a firewire HDD that has Mac OS X installed on it you can boot up from it by pressing "T" during bootup.
If you don't, try another OS. If I were you I would use Ubuntu, a linux OS. This will do absolutely no harm to your system at all, since it is booting from a live CD and is completely sandboxed. Go to http://ubuntu.com/ and download the live CD for free (700 MB) and burn it to a CD. Before you boot up from it you should disable journalling on your HDD, since Ubuntu can't write to journalled hfs+. You can do this from your Mac OS X install disc 1, which you boot up from (press "C" at startup to boot from CD), the Disk Utility application, selecting your drive and selecting "Disable Journalling" from the "File" menu.
Then reboot and boot from your Live CD. Say yes to everything until you get to the desktop. You don't have to install it (unless you want), just go to the "Places" button on the "menu bar" and select Macintosh HD, or whatever you named yours, navigate it normally and delete the files. Make sure to leave a few behind. Then restart by pressing the icon in the top right hand corner. This approach is completely harmless, and I have used it several times on my friends' Macs which needed access to files while the OS was down. After you have done all that you should enable journalling again
    Hope this helps.

  • The video downloading is extremely slow after downloading Flash Player Active X (IE) and FP Plug-in

I have Windows 7 on a 64-bit operating system, and have Firefox 19 and Internet Explorer 8. I tried installing Flash Player 11.6.602.171 from the Adobe Website and got an error message right at 47% download "can not contact reliable source." I also tried uninstalling whatever Flash Player I had, but I continued to get the same error message at 47% "can not contact reliable source." Finally, following the advice found in the link below under "Program Bar Hangs During Download," I downloaded Flash Player ActiveX (internet explorer) and Flash Player Plug-In (all other browsers). It appeared that both downloads were successful and I verified that the installation was complete in the link below under "Verify that installation is complete." It says I have Flash Player 11.6.602.171. My issue now is that whenever I watch videos that use Flash Player, the downloading of videos is extremely slow.  For example, a 45 second youtube video might take 30 minutes to watch. I have tried everything (from General Info, Download Issues, Installation Issues, Post-Installation Issues) in this Adobe installation problem page http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/installation-problems-flash-player-windows.html but the problem has not improved. Can someone please help me? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

First, I went on this link under Progress Bar Hangs During Download
    http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/installation-problems-flash-player-windows.html#mai n-pars_header
and then I downloaded Flash Player directly by clicking the links provided Flash Player for ActiveX (IE) and then Flash Player Plug-In (All browsers).  After my installations were complete, I tried watching any youtube videos or videos on www.ABC.com and the loading of videos was extremely slow.

  • Computer So Slow after 10.4.7

I just upgraded to OS 10.4.7 and my computer (G5) is so slow now.
Takes 2-3 minutes to open programs (FCP, Motion, etc.)
Can only run one application at a time..
Is this a known issue with the update?

    i have:
    1. zapped pram
    2. repaired permissions using disk utility
    3. used cocktail to clear caches and run all maintenance scripts
    4. used applejack (all tests)
    5. reinstalled the 10.4.7 combo updater
    6. ran repair disk
none of the above procedures showed any problems.
i have 1gb of ram and plenty of free hard drive space, so it is definitely not related to memory/storage limitations.
i have not used diskwarrior yet nor tried to install a fresh os.
this is the first time any mac os update causes me serious problems and it is consistent across all of my computers (a dual G5, a PB G4 Ti, another PB G4 1.5Ghz, and a PB G3 Pismo). i have never had such problems with any of these systems before updating to 10.4.7.
any suggestions you can make would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks.

  • How do I get my computer to recognize and run Flash Player?

I have successfully downloaded Flash Player several times, but I am still unable to play video clips from websites like CNN. I get the message that I have to download Flash Player.  Flash Player shows up in the list of installed programs on the computer's control panel.

I assume you are on Windows 7.
Ensure that you disabled ActiveX Filtering: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/flash-player-games-video-or.html#main_2__Disable_Ac tiveX_Filtering__if_you_are_using_Internet_Explorer_9_
If it doesn't solve the issue, please let us know if you see any animation in the following page: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html

  • My computer is slow after upgrading to mavericks

I just did the free upgrade to mavericks and now my laptop is running slow...ugh!!
ran sophos for any threads and it was all clear. any suggestions???

I am having the same issue with a year old iMac with an i7 and 12 gig of mem. The system is incredibly slow and is virtually unusable. Activity monitor shows most of the applications are not taking large percentages of processor loads.. But I get unresponsive applications and beach ball just doing simple things. Even clicks on button and such can have anywhere form a half second t a five second delay from time to time and it lasts for a few minutes. Disutility running repair permissions has no effect. Extreemly frustrating.

  • My computer is slower after Mavericks install

I realize that other people are posting about this very problem in these forums, but I am having trouble following the jargon when folks give advice, so I'm starting my own thread here.
I am running a 15 inch MacBook Pro and I just installed Mavericks over the weekend. Now everything seems to have a lag time of a few seconds and some programs are taking ages to start up. I'd really love to figure out how to get this to stop. I don't know if it is possible to go back to my old operating system now, either. It would be great to fix this and get it to work if possible. Does anyone have any ideas for me?
Here's some info on my computer:
2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
    8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory

  • Solution to: CPU slows after playing Flash video in Firefox

This is a follow-up to the discussion in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/956602
entitled: "Since upgrade, FIrefox 20 and Adobe flash player 11 eat up all my CPU wieh playing streaming video." I would post it there, but since that thread is "archived" I cannot. I wish there was a way that I could get readers of that thread to see this solution.
On September 3, 2013, I posted that this problem had been affecting my Windows 7 64 bit system as well: After playing a Flash video with the latest Firefox and Flash player, my CPU usage was 100% consumed by an unknown process. The only fix was to reboot, and its effects were only temporary, until playing the next flash video.
Yesterday, a routine scan by Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) discovered, and recommended removal of, an application called Link Swift, which according to my Control Panel / Programs and Features, had been installed on 9/1/2013. I have no memory of deliberately installing it, and so I let MBAM uninstall it. Since then my system seems to behave normally again.
    For more information see http://malwarefixes.com/remove-pup-optional-linkswift/
    I hope this is helpful.
    - Rich

Sigh. No, it's not fixed. Despite my optimistic report of yesterday, after a few more web sites, a few more videos, the CPU utilization climbed to 100% of each of my four processors, my system became unusable and had to be re-booted. It is as if Firefox gradually consumes some resource which is eventually depleted, and not restored even when Firefox quits.
