Computer Is Waking Up

I put a Windows 8.1 Pro desktop into hibernate mode.   I cannot understand how it is possible, but the next day the computer is turned on.   No one is hitting the power key.  The BIOS is NOT configured for scheduled wakeup, and wakeup LAN
features are all disabled.   The deepest sleeps states are all enabled.   The BIOS is configured to leave power off in the event of a power outage and restoration.   So basically nothing in the BIOS explains this behavior.   I am using
a Dell T7600, and this is the kind of question that Dell will never answer well.
How could the computer be powering itself back on?  What scenario am I missing?

Hi,
Besides, two things to consider:
Control Panel\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings\Sleep\Allow wake timers.
In Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, you have additional check boxes on the Power Management tab for the Network Adapter that defines whether this device can wake the computer:
•Allow this device to wake the computer
Disable the two options to check the result.

Freezing up after latest 10.5 update when restarting computer or waking from sleep. Is anyone else seeing this?

I am having the same problem with the screen not waking up after it goes to sleep. Once I was able to recover with pressing the power button just long enough to wake it but not restart. The other two times I had to power down and restart -- I also got the jagged screen graphics once.
I have been experiencing this since I installed the 10.5.3 update. It seems to be ok if I put the computer to sleep using 'Sleep' on the Apple menu, but if my screen saver comes on and it goes to sleep on its own, then I have problems waking it.
Frustrating - I don't like to power down and restart my iMac if I can avoid it.

  • Computer is waking up when should be sleeping

My computer (iMac 10.6.8) is waking up on its own! Sometimes it goes to sleep on its own, or I put it to sleep, but then it pops on again. The energy settings remain as they should be, though the lock is open, as it has always been. What can I do?

Hello, seems like 2 different problems sort of...
Waking is generally caused by some attached USB or Firewire device, can you put it to sleep & disconnect all those & see if it wakes?
Sleeping on it's own may be heat related... or not.

  • Computer not waking up - please help!

I recently updated my computer to snow leopard. I have a 13 in MacBook aluminum with version 10.6.4. I recently began having issues with the computer waking up from sleep after watching videos on websites like hulu.com. After watching the movie, I close the laptop, wait until the computer is asleep and then attempt to reopen the computer to login back in and the login screen does not appear. It seems as though the computer is trying to wake up as the display screen lightens up but the login window does not appear and touching keys on the keyboard does not help. The only way to bring back the login screen is to do a hard restart. All software (firefox, flash, and all mac updates) has been updated and the problem still persists. Any help would be appreciated!

Try a SMC reset which governs such things.
Personally, I would just close Hulu.

  • Weird noise coming from computer when 'waking up' from sleep mode

    Hi everyone,
I recently upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 - specs are in the attached photo below.
Since yesterday, when I turn on my computer, or 'wake' it up from sleep mode, it makes a strange and noticeable whining noise. I've had the computer for around two months and it has never made such noises. The noise lasts for about 1-2 seconds. Aside from that the computer is operating as usual.
I reset/shut down the computer several times and also did a PRAM reset. I have no idea what the issue may be and can't seem to find anything of relevance in the community. Should I go to an Apple Store? Is there something to be fixed or will the computer need to be replaced?
Thank you all for your time!

Sleep mode -  I use sleep mode for scheduled recording of TV shows in Windows Media Center. If I shut down, no recording.
Yea, waking up to do a recording is certainly a valid scenario.  I gave up on Windows Media Center right before they came out with an XBOX that is actually quiet and could be used as an extender.  We've been a TiVo family since those noisy XBOX days.
Regarding sleep/hibernate, I just got tired of my machines waking in the Lenovo dock and having to reset application position, screen resolutions, and all of the other crap that seems to happen to ThinkPads on a resume.  That doesn't even take into account the black screen of death or other reliability issues I've seen over the years.
I am firmly a shutdown guy now.  It's clean and I know what I get when I press the power button again.  With 15-25 second boots and fast I/O, the reliability outweighs the perceived time savings.
We haven't discussed what might be corrupting the original posters file system.  That is disconcerting.  Sounds like a Crucial M4 firmware issue.  If that is the culprit, there's going to be hell to pay on the mSATA M4 based Ultrabooks assuming it has the same bug.

  • Intous3 tablet freezes computer on waking

I just got a new intous3 tablet, plugged it in, downloaded the latest driver for it and started using it. It works fine unless I put my computer to sleep. When I wake it up it recognizes the tablet for a few seconds and then everything freezes. Occasionally the screen doesn't wake up. I can't use my keyboard so I have to shut the power off manually to restart.
I've tried switching my USBs around to no avail. There doesn't seem to be any USB power issues and I can't contact Wacom until tomorrow.
    Any ideas?

  • Computer keeps waking up immediately after I put it to sleep

I've got a dual G5 running Panther and I put it to sleep when I go to work in the morning. Last night, I wanted to try out Tiger (yes, I know - I'm way behind the times) so I installed it on a FireWire drive and booted off it for a couple of hours to see how things worked. I then went back to my internal Panther drive, and noticed that when I hit "sleep", it goes to sleep, the screens turn off, and then for some reason I immediately hear the internal drives spin back up and the thing turns on again!! Why can't it stay asleep?!?

    That is common and in my sleep tips;
"USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit."

  • Computer not waking over wifi

After updating to Mountain Lion, my iMac will not wake over wifi for admin access. I have tried to access the iMac through my MacBook, my iPad, and an iPod touch, but none of these devices with their various apps (file sharing, splashtop, file browser, good reader) can wake my iMac when it's sleeping.
Wake over wifi is supported on my Mac.
I have wake for admin access checked in system preferences.
I am uncertain how to proceed. Any ideas?

Still have the "can't wake up (or sleep)" problem after changing the Energy Saver option. I closed my laptop's lid. About 3 hours later I verified that the laptop was indeed "snoring" (front light) so I assume it was sleeping. I opened the lid and again the LCD panel remained off. Of interest, an external 20" display did turn on and did display content. I don't know much about the internals but it appeared that the video driver was still active and it's video memory had good contents. Otherwise, the laptop was completely frozen. I did try disconnecting and reconnecting the external display, hoping that it might trigger some interrupt handler--no luck.
I've now changed my MBP's video selection to "Better Power". I also tried closing and reopening the lid, leaving it closed for just long enough for the laptop to start snoring. It came out of sleep without problem.
FYI, for the three-hour test I did not add or remove any peripherals, including power; so no config change.

  • External Hard Drive not sleeping or waking

Hi I have a mac mini with Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2. I recently purchased a iomega 2 TB external hard drive that came pre loaded with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) pre formatted on it. I use 800 FireWire for the connection. I had no problems with the drive mounting and transferring files until I put my computer to sleep. I took me some time to figure out that the sleep function was the cause of the problem I was having. The drive would still be listed in finder after my computer woke but when accessed finder would freeze up and I would get the spinning cursor. Also when I left it to sleep over night I would find the drive off and an error that it had been ejected wrong.
I watched the drive when I put my computer to sleep get the sleep command and flash for a second and start to sleep but then come on again as if there was an error in the sleep command from my mac. If I wake my computer again to see the action of the drive it then goes to sleep when my computer is waking. I am guessing the command is the same to the drive from my mac. Wake or sleep, it just depends on the drives current state as to whether it sleeps or wakes.
My fix so far is to not let my computer sleep at all. As well I have to choose in system preferences to not allow the drives to sleep. Did notice after some time the external hard drive will sleep anyway from idle time but now my mac is not sleeping obviously. Or I have to eject the disk manually and then turn off the external hard drive then put my computer to sleep.
Am I missing something here? It's either a hard drive error or a software bug in Lion.

  • Bluetooth Keyboard not functioning well when waking from sleep in 10.8

I've got two different Macs I've recently upgraded to 10.8. Both have wireless keyboards that I use with them.
Both keyboards are now having problems when the computer is waking from sleep. Sometimes the keyboard
input is very slow (there's a long lag between a keypress and seeing the letter on the screen), or it shows multiple
characters when only one key has been pressed.
Unpairing the keyboard, and re-pairing it fixes the problem, but obviously it's annoying .
Has anyone else seen this issue?  Is there a fix?

So, my machine fell asleep, and when it awoke, I typed in my password to unlock OmniFocus and Yahoo Messenger. Then nothing, back to a machine I could move the mouse on, move windows around, but couldn't actually access anything. I noticed however, the Yahoo Messenger window was stuck trying to reconnect and the OmniFocus Keychain unlock window was still on the screen. Even with forcing Yahoo Messenger to quit, I could not get around the keychain window.
Knowning this, I checked for updates to Yahoo Messenger and Omnifocus, and low and behold there is an update for Lion compatibility for OmniFocus, and a more recent version of Yahoo Messenger. With these two upgraded, hopefully this will resolve any more  issues.
Seems 99.9% of all my issues with Lion were over software needing to be updated. Not a bad thing, but it takes time.

  • Sound problem after waking from sleep

When I wake my computer from sleep the external speakers to do not produce sound. This is not related to the 'red light' issue, no red light is shining and in the sound control panel 'internal speakers' is showing.
Interesting is that when I play with the alert sounds in the control panel I can hear them, but when I adjust the volume or try to get sound out of software (iTunes, Quicktime, etc.) I can not hear anything. Also, when the computer is waking from sleep if I quickly toggle the volume control I get one or two 'clicks' before it goes silent. I have repaired the permissions according to other posts but that did not help.
However, if I plug in earphones and take them out again the volume works. . .
    any suggestions?

    2) Wait 5-10 mins
    3) Open lid, log in to iChat (with login sound on) or make some other sound play. Listen for a hissing or static sound within the first couple seconds of whatever you just played.

  • When waking up won't connect to net

I have a wireless system in my place and I am the only one who uses it. When my computer is waking up it asks me pick a desired network to connect to. It say that none of my preferred networks are available. My network is in the list tho. After I select it and enter my password, it thinks for a bit then says "connection timed out" but then connect anyways. I have asked it to store my password and have only my network on my preferred network list. It doesnt do this on my boyfriends network. I am using a Belkin router. Please Help

Hello CVhaz. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
It sounds (no pun intended) that you have the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) in its default configuration; which would be a standalone wireless router. If this is true, then you would need to switch wireless networks between the times you want to stream iTunes and those where you want to access the Internet.
The key is to configure the AX as a "wireless client."
    Let's double-check your AX's settings:
AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - iTunes Setup
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
    o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
o Remember this password in my keychain: (optional)
    o Set time automatically: (unchecked)
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing Siemens' wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

Hello I am having an issue with my computer not waking up from sleep mode.
    Example:
I walk away from my computer for a certain amout of hours and it goes into sleep mode. I come back and move the mouse or hit any keys on the keyboard; nothing, doesnt come back to life.
I have the latest driver updates, I have tried looking this up but came up with nothing, and also I thought that I set it so it wouldn't go to sleep but don't know if I did it right.
    This is my computer:

Try resetting the power plans to the default. Enter this at an elevated command prompt.
       powercfg -restoredefaultschemes
If you need to repost, look on the Toshiba label on the bottom of your laptop. Gives us the full model name/number like Qosmio X505-Q830, and give us your model's part number like PQX33U-00K00H. As well, please confrim what OS version you're using like Windows 7 64bit.
Let us know what happens. Good luck.

I am assuming that this is related to my slow computer after waking from sleep.  Every click has delayed reaction up to spinning beach ball in length.  Went to console log and see this same message repeating over and over and over.  What does it mean?  How do I fix it?  Is it related to the slowdown?
    Thanks

Ok...  Sometimes Mail will abort the restart that I am trying to do to get the system back to normal speed so I was wondering about that "plug-in" which appears to be more than a plug in.  It put a bundle in my Library/Mail folder that can't be deleted...
Here is my log now which starts showing errors as soon as I reboot... I am backing up now.  It seems that there should be something that I could remove without a clean install, but I can't figure it out from this....Thanks for the insight...
