Computer/itunes locks up when ipod connected

Itunes locks up when I connect my ipod (20G).I hear the "ding, dong" when I connect it, but Itunes does not recognize that it is connected, it freezes and I have to reboot. It charges, and the "do not disconnect" sign is constantly running.I can not upload any new music I've purchased.I tried to restore, and now it is back to the factory setting with no music. My itunes works perfectly with my shuffle. My shuffle is listed under "devices", but not my ipod.
Anyone with a solution?

I am having the exact same problem. Th eone difference is that on occasion, iTunes downloads my playlists yet not the associated songs in the playlist.

  • Itunes locking up when ipod is connected.  Firewall problem?

Hi folks. For years I have been running itunes, an ipod touch and NOD32 firewall with no problems at all. But a couple of days ago I connected up my ipod and there is a problem.
itunes launches as you would expect, but it immediately hangs. After a few minutes, it will free up, but the ipod is not visible in itunes. I can see it in Windows and the USB driver is working fine.
If I disconnect the ipod whilst itunes is "stuck", then itunes immediately starts responding properly. So it looks very much like this freezing is caused by itunes hanging on the ipod.
Here's the wierd thing: I have found that if I disable my firewall, the problem goes away. i.e. everything works fine if the firewall is disabled. No lockups and itunes can see the ipod and will happily sync with it.
I really don't see how the firewall can be the culprit though. I didn't think firewalls applied to USB connections??!
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes and it makes no difference. I have also upgraded from 9.1 to 9.2 and that didn't fix it either.
Any ideas what's going on (And how to fix it?)
    Thanks

After re-installing iTunes, and doing a full restore on my iPod, I have determined that it was some album cover art that seemed to be causing the problem. The iPod would start to sync, and then hang on one song. Deleted that song, and it synced a little more, and got hung up again on another song from the same album.
I deleted the entire album from my iTunes library, and the iPod synced just fine. I re-ripped the CD in question, this time with out adding ablum cover art, and it worked perfectly.
Now I wonder why iTunes is getting stuck on certian album cover art. The CD in question is Eric Clapton's "Crossroads". iTunes was unable to retreive the album cover art when I ripped the CD [perhaps because iTunes has it listed as "Crossroads (Box Set)"], so I just scanned the cover of the CD and added it that way. I have done this with other CDs, and had no problems what so ever. Anyone have any clue as to why this would happen?

  • ITunes shuts down when iPod connects

Well i bought the new 5th Generation iPod and when i connect it, it shuts down the whole iTunes. I tried it on another windows vista computer, and same issue. Works fine with MAC. But I dont want to buy another computer. ASSISTANCE?

Head into your Problem Reports and Solutions control panel, and go into your Problem History. Look for iTunes problem reports generated at the same time as the ipod-plugging-in incidents. Open them up and have a look at the details. Are they all saying the same thing? If so, paste the contents of a typical report into a reply here so we can have a look at it.

  • ITunes Locks up when iPod is connected

this is weird. I've had my iPod for 3 months now and never had any issue with it or iTunes. All of a sudden, this evening, I plug in my 60gb iPod in to my computer. Then iTunes recognizes my iPod. As long as I am in the "Library" screen it is fine. Then I go to a playlist on iPod or just to browse my iPod and iTunes freezes. I end up having to do CtrlAltDel/end task just to get out of it. I just dloaded and installed the new iTunes + iPod 06.28.06 updates to see if it would fix it, but the problem persists. Anyone have any idea what may be going on? I have no clue.
    Thanks,
    Josh

wow, suddenly it works perfect again. i guess the little iTunes elves in my computer were napping

    good lord.
okay, in that case it's possible that you've got a problem with damaged itunes preferences files in the account where itunes is crashing when you connect the ipod. (there's another couple of possibilities, but we'll check on this one first.)
the preference files contain the information about the settings changes you make in those tabs that show up when you go "edit > preferences" in itunes. there's a different set of preference files in each different user account in XP, which is why a bad preference file can cause trouble in one account but not another.
so let's try rebuilding your preference files in the account that is causing you trouble.
Make a note of any custom preferences you have set up prior to doing the rebuild. The rebuild will return all preferences to their default settings.
Quit itunes. Reboot the PC. Find and delete the following two files:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    ... and:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
("<username>" here is the name of the account you're having the preferences problem in.)
You might have to turn on "Show hidden files and folders" to find the preference files. Right-click "My Computer", select "Open", go "Tools > Folder Options". Click the "View tab. The "Show hidden files and folders" radio button is in the center scrolling panel.
The preference files will be rebuilt the next time you launch iTunes when you are logged into that user account. (the setup assistant and license screen will run again.)
does itunes quit again in the account with the fresh pref files if you plug the ipod in?
    love, b

  • ITunes is stuck when iPod is connected

After upgrading to iTunes version 9, when I connect my iPod to the computer, I get the spinning beach ball and nothing happens. I tried everything in the troubleshooting wizard including uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, resetting the iPod, restarting the computer, etc. Help!

Uninstalling iToner fixed this problem with my Touch (beach ball whenever connected) which was driving me mad. You have to delete the iToner application from the Applications folder as well as the iTunes plugin (located in home folder: (username)/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins). To delete the plugin (empty it from the trash) you'll have to quit iTunes and stop iToner Helper using the Activity Monitor utility.
Syncing ringtones to the iPhone works just fine without iToner (make your sound file into AAC if it isn't already using iTunes; drag that file to the desktop and rename extension to .m4r instead of .m4a; make sure the other versions of the file are deleted from iTunes and then drag the .m4r back to it - should show up in the "Ringtones" list) so iToner is not necessary anyway.
    Thanks Jim!

  • ITunes shuts down when I connect my iPod 30gb

I desperately need help. Recently my computer crashes and I reformated it. So I had to reinstall iTunes. Ever since then iTunes shuts down when I connect my iPod 30gb. A windows error message appears saying iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. I am unable to update my iPod which drives me crazy. Somebody please help!
I browsed through some threads which have similar problems as I do, but I am unable to reply in any. It says: This topic has been archived - replies are not allowed.
There's this thread here about the problem I am facing but I doesn't seem to understand the solution to it.

    Can somebody please help me?

A windows error message appears saying iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to shut down.
let's get a crash log from itunes, and send it to the Apple engineers for a look.
Typically, you'll need to configure Dr. Watson on your PC in order to generate crash logs. Windows start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return. At the prompt in the command line window that comes up, type in
    drwtsn32 -i
    And hit return.
This will create crash logs in Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\. There'll usually be a file in here called "drwtsn32.log"
prior to collecting the itunes crash log, delete any existing crash logs in there. (we want to make sure we send the correct crash log.)
Generate the crash, collect the crash log, and and send it as an attachment to this email address.
in the email to Roy, be sure to include the following information:
    - A link to the thread on Apple Discussions where the issue is being discussed
    - The username you are using in the thread
    - The version of iTunes you are using or trying to use
    - the version of Windows you are using (mention service packs)
    - A concise description of the issue you are seeing
    - The exact text of the error message you are seeing
