Computer jams on wake-up

I've noticed that if something gets disconnected from the computer while the case is closed, it starts up, trying to tell me "device improperly disconnected". This seems normal to me. The problem here is that the next time I try to wake up my computer, I open the case, and it turns on and asks me for my password, like normal, but after I enter it, it turns solid black and won't let me do anything. The only solution I've found is to close the lid again, wait for it to fall asleep, and then wake it up AGAIN. Is there some way to fix this, or is it just something I'll have to live with?

Fixed with OS update

    Hi brett242424,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The movie would be in your iTunes library, in the Movies application.  However, if the rental period has expired, you may need to contact the iTunes Store Support about your situation:

  • My computer will not wake when I press a key or use the mouse....

I have to say that I have a G4 but my question is not getting addressed in that forum and there ae many more users that utilize this one, so sorry for misleading. BUT, for some reason my computer will not wake when a key is pressed or the mouse activated. Any sugestions? Also, does anyone know of a program (shareware or free) that will clean my files and/or hard drive ( i.e. Macjanitor, Cocktail)? Thank you for your help.

As a first step you could try trashing
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
and re-start and re-select your preferred System Preferences - Energy Saver settings.
    There are more suggestions here

  • Dock fails to appear after start and computer jams?

After power on the dock fails to appear. Soon after computer jams. Tried restart and shut down and restart. No success. Tried to use time machine back up. Cannot restore. Complete failure. How to reboot?

Follow these documents. Especially Safe Mode. Disconnect TimeMachine and other devices/drives.

    Once your in
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder and at the prompt enter:
    killall Dock
    Press RETURN.
Look in your User/Library/Preferences folder for
    com.apple.dock.plist
and move to your desktop, try the killall Dock again in Terminal.
Once your Dock is fine, download the free OnyX and run all the cleaning and maintainence features and reboot

If at any time you got a functioning system, take this opportunity to backup your files to a external drive (not TimeMachine) via drag and drop methods.
It might be a more serious problem, like a failing hard drive.
Look into the free Carbon Copy Cloner as a hold option bootable external drive clone, it helps in problems like this as you can boot the computer from the external drive and repair or recover your latest files and even reverse clone.

  • After quitting iphoto computer jams

    Hi there,
After quitting iphoto, my computer jams and a blank blue screen appears. I have to hold down the power button to shut it down and then start up again.
Everything appears normal after that. Any ideas?
    Thanks Sally

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged during the time something abnormal was happening. That time might be before or after the boot.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. If the problem is a system crash or freeze, post the messages from before the boot time, when the system was about to crash or was failing to shut down. In either case, please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning or the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
If the log doesn't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2. Search that archived log, and if necessary the older ones below it, for the same information.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
    Do the same with kernel.log.
    Step 3
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Computer will not "wake up" when i re open the lid

When i close the lid, the computer will go to sleep. I will leave it there for a min. and then when i try to open up the lid and either move around the track pad or press a key on the keyboard, the computer will not wake up, the screen will stay blank. The light (on the side) will still be lit (but it does not dim in an out - like it normally does when it is sleeping). I then have to do a hard shut down with the computer and turn it back on. How can I fix this problem?

    Reset the SMC:

    Does that make any difference?

  • Computer won't wake from sleep; shuts-down unexpectedly

I've got older PB (2004). This just started happening. The computer will not wake from sleep, either when I close the screen or manually put it to sleep. I have reset the PRAM and PMU, but no change. Further, it now shuts itself down unexpectedly. Sometimes a hear the fan going hard before it shuts down, other times it just shuts down. It won't turn back on unless I reset the PMU. I think the battery and the cable are fine. I don't have anything plugged into the computer when it does this (other than power cable). Any suggestions?

    Hello Matt,
This is just to let you know that I have had the same thing happen to me this week and that I plan to closely follow your thread so that hopefully I may benefit from your responses. I, too, am using an older Powerbook (15", 1.33 MHz) and OS 10.3.9.
My problem began several days ago when I set up my first wireless router. Once it was up and running I set out to re-locate the router to the farthest point in my house. While traveling back and forth between the router and my laptop, I suddenly found that my laptop was totally blank and unresponsive (although the power light was on). I could not make it shut off, or start up. Using a second computer I turned to this support site, and by the end of the day I had learned enough to remove the battery over night while the reserve unit charged. The next morning I was able to reset the PMU and as a result I found that I could use the computer. ( I also decided to order a new battery, which is on its way as I write. I realize that it may or may not help). At present I am able to start the laptop by resetting the PMU, and while it is on everything seems fine. However, if I close the case, or put it into sleep mode, it dies immediately. (I am able to use the PMU to restart.)
If you determine what caused your laptop to malfunction I hope that you will post it here for my education...and I will do the same. Thank you. Gferg

  • Computer won't wake up

This is an intermittent problem. It happens about 30% of the time.
When I try to wake up my computer, sometimes it won't wake up (I know it is on). The screen remains black. I push keys, move the mouse, press the power button but nothing happens. Sometimes if I press the space bar or any key to try to wake it up the computer beeps. My only recourse is to restart the computer.
Does anyone know why this happens and what I can do to stop to stop it from happening?

Waking up dead, so to speak, is one of the more annoying experiences of using a computer - and annoying to diagnose too. The first thing I do is unplug all peripherals, assuming any are plugged in, and see if the problem disappears. If so, you'll know to look to the peripherals. (Which reminds me, never ever unplug a USB or FW device from a sleeping computer - that often causes the computer to wake up dead.)
Assuming the computer has no peripherals plugged into it (or still wakes up dead after unplugging them all) the next step is to create a new account. Set your computer so that it either logs in immediately to the new account or requires you to select an account at startup. Shut the computer off, restart, and log into the new account. Don't install any software or drivers but do feel free to configure the network so you can go online. If the computer no longer wakes up dead we'll know it is something in your account and can discuss that later. If it still doesn't wake up the problem could be the OS installation or hardware. In either case, back up your data now.
The next step would be to format the computer, reinstall the OS, and then see if the sleep problem continues. If so - AppleCare time. If not, reinstall your software, copy your data - but not your Library folder since the problem may exist there - and start enjoying your computer again.

  • Firefox 3.6.24 is stressing memory and CPU resources to the point that Hotmail is almost unusuable and computer jams while FF goes thru its athletics; what to do?

I have a Dell Inspiron 710m, with Windows XP, Norton 360, IE8. My computer understanding and needs are simple. Norton lets me know that Firefox is eating memory and CPU. The machine often jams while this happens, whether or not Norton has flagged an operation, and then resumes function. Hotmail is in shambles (jamming between operations, and having sign out problem). Neither Norton nor CC Cleaner (including Registry) indicate a problem. This is a nifty little machine that I use for email, mostly newspaper subscriptions, online shopping and banking, personal, and for Internet research. I have tried more advanced versions of Firefox and found them buggy. So, I went back. The upgrades are coming too fast. Not everyone is going to invest in another machine for Windows 7 or IE 9 capability right away. Meanwhile, Firefox, which worked just fine, seems to be pushing along, in what seems to be an industry in which cooperation and compatibility have ceased to be important. I don't know what to do. I can't do complex diagnostics and fixes, and am not in an area where I would take this computer anywhere.

Thank you for taking the time out to reply. I don't know whether or not your suggestions would have worked, but I did solve my problem. I eventually figured out that the file, overlay.xul, was doing something and when I changed the filename, the bar went away.
I was reading that the xul error usually meant something wrong with an extension, but that didn't make sense because after uninstalling/reinstalling, there were no extensions present, on an assumption, of course. I noticed a file through a search, and it was located in a folder without a mozilla/firefox name in it, looked like a randomly generated folder name. I looked in the extensions. ini and noticed it pointed to that overlay.xul file in that random named folder and thought, what the hell, and just renamed the overlay.xul file to something else and the problem went away.
    Thanks again.

  • Computer does not wake up from suspend

    Hi,
    Lenovo 3000 V100 0763 - Windows Vista Business.
I have a very annoying problem:
putting the computer to sleep , or when closing the lid for sleep (the moon icon lits up)
and waking it after 10-15 seconds is ok.
But more than that , even for a couple of minutes the computer simply will not wake up , everything seem to load ok , but the screen stays black , and the computer is not responding , than I have to lose all my job and press 5 seconds on the off button to get it shutdown and than booted from scratch.
It happens on any installation of Vista, clean or Lenovo's original.
It happens on Windows XP too
I have tried to completely uninstall and reinstall the video driver , it will not help
The computer has the latest Bios , and the latest Lenovo drivers (which are mostly 2007 though)
Any expert help will be much appreciated. I am out of ideas.
Simply not feasable that a laptop will not be able to do such an elementary option :-(

Suggestion .. setup your signature .. Os & what your computer has on it .. It helps the solution..kinda like mine .. never too much info.
When the screen goes black, and touchpad has no life, Click "Fn" and then move your finger around on the touchpad ..  works for me ..try that before you lightly press the power button ..
Right click the desktop, select properties, screen saver,  power, select  laptop, change the settings .. plugged - top left .. 30min, 1 hr, 3 hrs, 4 hrs hiber .. top right - on batts .. 10 min, 45 min, 2 hrs, 3 hrs hiber.. try my settings .. see if that works ..
Set a system restore before you start messing .. I turned stuff off  stuff using .. start .. run .. type in msconfig, select start up tab, click off some you think might be ok to try .. kinda pot luck .. there might be some better postings ..after you reboot don't click save on changes untill you know things are working..
Re-imaging .. works good .. just backup what you want because it's gone afterwards.. if you send it in especially .. back it up!
    Good Luck..

  • Computer does not wake up from stand by mode?

After leaving my mac alone, without doing anything for a while, the screen dims and eventually turns off (and it goes into standby mode, normally I presume). I think I have a screensaver set, but it never turns on and the screen is always black.
The serious problem comes when I try to wake the computer up. Jiggling the mouse, using the keyboard, and even pressing the power button do not usually invoke any response. The screen does not turn on unless I persist for 10 or more minutes in some situations. I have even unplugged, and plugged the computer back in with little or no results. Sometimes the screen will flash on for a second then turn off again. When I finally get it working it operates normally until the  next time I need to wake it up. If I have any programs open before letting the computer fall asleep, then they are still open when I finally get the computer running (unless I unplugged it).
This is getting extremely annoying, and I can not seem to fix the problem. Do I have a virus? Is something malfunctioning? What can I do about this?
Getting a mac is seeming like a bad decision ...

This is absolutely not a virus, or any other kind of malware.
One thing to try is resetting the SMC.
If that doesn't work, it's possible that you have some bad software installed that is causing problems. Try restarting in safe mode, then leave the machine alone and let it go to sleep. Does the problem recur in that case, or does it go away? If it goes away, then returns as soon as you restart normally, it's a third-party software problem.

  • Computer won't wake up from sleep

1 month old pavillion 500-205t, windows 7. I set computer to sleep after 10 minutes and monitor after 5 minutes. It hasn't mattered how long these times have been set for because I have tried other times.  Most of the time it wakes with the mouse or the keyboard. Other times, when the white lighted on/off button is on steady and  not flashing on and off every 1 or 2 seconds. the computer and  monitor will not wake up. This has happened at least 15 times. I have tried loading a cd, pluging a usb tool and different devices all to no avail. I have to hold the on/off button for 3 or 4 seconds to shut down. I have tried hard shutdowns and unplugging computer. I can see a light next to the on/off light working as if it is trying to read something, ie flashing very fast. I've had 4 pavillions and this is a first. Bought through Costco and they don't know what to do. Thanks

  • Computer won't wake from sleep

For some reason when I leave my computer alone for more than about 15 mins and the display goes to sleep, I cannot wake it back up.  I have to hold down the power button to force a restart.  I would prefer not to do this as I lose everything that I was working on.  I just did a clean (format and reinstall) install of Snow Leopard last week and downloaded all the updates as per Software Update.

Sounds like you need to take it to Apple if it's under warranty or AppleCare, or to a repair shop.

  • Computer Won't Wake Up From Standby After Installing 7520 Printer

I installed a new 7520 on my desktop PC (running XP Home). The printer works fine but when the computer goes into sleep mode, I can't wake it up - forcing me to reboot the PC. Sleep mode on the computer worked before the printer install.
If I keep the printer turned off, waking from sleep mode on the computer WILL work properly.
    How can i fix this?

    Hey Zyzx,
I have seen this type of condition before in a USB connected printer.  How do you have the printer connected to the Windows XP Home Edition desktop PC?  (USB or Network connected)
If the printer is connected by a USB cable, then you may try a different USB port on the PC and uninstalling/re-installing the USB Controller on the PC.
To perform the uninstall/re-install of the USB controll follow the steps listed below.
Boot into Safe Mode on the PC
Click on the Start menu of the PC
    Right Click on My Computer
Select Manage out of the list
Select Device Manager in the list on the left
Right click on the section titled "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and select Properties
Uninstall the section and restart the PC to perform the re-install
I will look into this issue more for you and get back with you.
