Computer Monitor Sleeping & Entering Front Row Randomly

Since updating to Snow Leopard, my computer screen will go black and then wake up shortly afterwards (maybe 15 seconds) and then it is also going into Front Row on its own. I just disabled the shortcut, but had not pressed those keys when it entered Front Row.

On clarification. The computer is not sleeping, but the screen is going into screen saver mode or just going dark for about 15 seconds.

  • Front Row Randomly Starts Up

    Hey everyone,
I own a white MacBook and I am using the latest version of OS X. There is a problem with Front Row. The issue is that it randomly starts up without me clicking it or launching it. It's not even on my dock. So I find myself pressing the Escape key a lot now. I don't know why it happens. I never really use Front Row, so I'm not sure what's wrong. Can anyone shed some light on this and help me out? I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you!

If you don't need to use Front Row, you might use the Security System Preferences to disable the IR receiver. Perhaps some device in your environment is triggering the IR receiver and opening Front Row?

  • Front Row randomly activates itself

    Hi,
I have Leopard running on a MacBook with bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
Every so often, Front Row activates itself. I am happily doing something else on my Mac, the screen darkens all of a sudden and Front Row appears.
I am definitely not triggering it via Ctrl-Escape, and definitely not using the remote (or any other iRdA device).
Any ideas? Anyone else encounter this?
    It never happened under Tiger.
    Cheers,
    Dan

I am having the exact same problem. I am on a MacBook Pro running Leopard, but had this problem with 10.4 as well. I also have a bluetooth keyboard, but I have an RF mouse (Logitech MX1000). I am certain that I'm not triggering Front Row by bumping the keyboard, and my remote is not being touched.
Any help would be most appreciated. This is quite annoying and happens usually a few times a day.

  • Have Front Row Default To Another Source Instead Of Home iTunes

    Hey All,
Curious if anyone knows of a script or app that allows me to force Front Row to default to a specific source upon loading?
I have all my movies and tv shows setup on my main system in my bedroom and everytime I load front row, I have to scroll down and choose the source I want.
I know there are tons of little apps out there for such things like this (like TV Row chooses which monitor to send Front Row to instead of your main monitor), so I would hope someone knows of one. I have been searching on the net for the past week, but usually I just get links to media center apps that have the keyword Source in them.
    Thanks!
    Tim

I have the exact same problem.
I think that the problem is related to a read/write permissions / "file in use" type of problem that is specifc to network drives in some way.
I have two computers, and my iTunes library is stored on a usb-harddrive connected to a Airport Extreme wireless router.
When I have opened iTunes on computer1, and try to start iTunes on computer2 it says that the Itunes library is locked.
I guess the same thing is happening when FrontRow tries to connect to the iTunes library, while iTunes is open.

  • Front Row: two questions

    Hi,
I have two questions to Front Row:
    1. Front Row have problems with playing video podcasts? Is this right so? I can't see video podcasts with Front Row
    2. Front row have problems with sleep mode of my iMac G5 20".
When I use the Apple Remote to wake up my iMac from sleep mode, Front Row doesn't start here. I see only the Mac finder. Why?
    Sorry for my bad english.
    Greetings, Bernd

Bernd, since your comp is still under warranty you may wish to give the online tech support a try -->HERE<--</a>. Click on the "Chat with a support agent" link.
If you don't want to go that route, then I suggest that you call them over the phone. Hopefully, you have the AppleCare Protection Plan if your 90 day warranty ran out.

  • Auto-Quit Front Row on exit?

    Hi everyone.
Having just received a new MacBook with Leopard, I've been playing around with the new version of Front Row. First off, it's great, runs smoothly and exactly as I want it to. However, I've noticed that Front Row.app uses an awfully big chunk of RAM. This is understandable for when it's active/running - it's a hefty app. The thing I don't like is that after I've exited Front Row, it's still running (as shown in Activity Monitor), still using a big amount of RAM. Is there a way to change the behavior of it, so that when I exit Front Row with the remote it actually quits the Front Row.app process? It's kinda annoying to go into Activity Monitor to quit it manually. Also, the Front Row app icon, now available in Leopard doesn't show it as actively running, so no help there. Does it eventually quit on its own, and I'm just jumping the gun by going to Activity Monitor?
    Thanks!
    William

Saying it will 'eventually' quit is a little vague. Any idea how long it floats around running in the background for? I have an external drive I use with my MacBook, with aliases that point toward it in my movies folder (so that I can view movies stored on the external drive). The problem is that until Front Row /quits/ I cannot eject the drive. So I have to fire up Activity Monitor and quit Front Row that way. Rather annoying, especially when I just want to eject the drive, close the laptop, and get moving.

  • New Hard Drive - Lost Front Row!

    Hello,
I have an iMac running on Tiger 10.4.11 and this past week I had my hard drive replaced. My computer originally came with Front Row installed, but it is not on my new hard drive, and was never an icon in my applications folder, therefore it is not on my external hard drive and I cannot put it onto my new hard drive (I only backed up my documents, photos, music, and applications folders). Is there any way I can get front row back?

You can install it from your install disk using Pacifist.

  • Front Row displays desktop when streaming a TV show from a shared library

I recently bought South Park series 9 from the iTunes store on my iMac. I have a Macbook that is currently being used as a media server, being hooked up to a Samsung LCD TV.
The other day I was happily watching one of the episodes via Front Row on my Macbook through the TV, when it suddenly displayed the error message "Cannot play this video" (Or similar). When I went to go back into the episode, it displayed the "There are no shared movies" error message.
After a while, I eventually re-connected to the iMac library, but now when I select a video, it displays the "Loading video..." screen in Front Row, then plays the Audio, but displays the desktop, as if Front Row is not there.
When the video plays in iTunes it plays fine, and this only happens with the shared videos in the iMac's iTunes library.
    Anyone have any ideas?

CubaMAN is correct. This issue is due to the most recent version of iTunes. It's also, specifically, due to the version of iTunes on the computer that's running Front Row, not the computer that's sharing the videos. I would suggest you send Apple some iTunes feedback. There's an option for a "feedback type" of "Bug Report":
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
If you can, temporarily, move the videos to the MacBook, they'll play just fine directly.

  • Sharing iTunes and then using Front Row

I have been downloading all the album artwork just like everyone else is, now that iTunes 7 is out.
I have run across a small problem and a fix I would like to pass along for people having problems viewing the album artwork on a computer that is sharing the iTunes from another computer and then using Front Row.
First off, the artwork for me seems to work fine on all individual computers that have the songs and the album artwork on it.
When I shared my 'master or main' computer iTunes with my Mini Mac Intel, I then played the music using Front Row but the majority of the album covers would not show up.
For some reason only a few of the album covers were showing up in Front Row on the shared computer. It took me quite awhile to figure out that the only album covers that were showing up were the album covers that I dragged and copied onto the main computers iTunes album window.
I don't know if anyone has found anything easier to fix this problem but I went ahead a copied all of the album artwork, one by one, on the main computer into the iTunes artwork window. Now, all the computers that access the main computer via sharing, shows the album artwork when using Front Row.
I hope I explained this clear enough.
Here is a photo of my Mac Mini hooked up to my TV, playing Front Row and using the shared iTunes Library from my main computer which is an iMac G5.
    http://users.sisqtel.net/jkriz/MacMini/frontrow_albumcovers.jpg
I needed to use the flash for this photo because it was getting dark but I think you get the idea.
I know I could have put all my music on the Mini Mac or any of my other computers and I wouldn't have had to go through all of this... but then I would have trouble keeping all of my computers music up to date. This way, I only have to keep the main computer up to date with all of my music. Much easier.
If anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know.
I hope the rest of you can benefit from this tip.

    Bizmarck,
    Well, this is interesting.
When I first read your question I said to myself, of course I can play the shared slideshow along with the selected shared music.....
Well, I'm glad I tried it out first before I posted this as I cannot play the selected songs on the shared slideshow. All I could play was the Minuet in "G"....
I could have sworn I used to be able to do this with 10.4.7 and Front Row 1.2
    However, I could be wrong.
    I have tried everything.
I have the Serving computers iTunes and iPhoto open and to allow sharing of both.
On the Mac Mini which is playing the shared items from the serving computer, I can turn off the music but I cannot select a song from the shared library in iPhoto. All the library shows for music selection on the Mac Mini is the music that is on the Mac Mini.
Apparently Apple has more work to do if this is going to work.
It is interesting to me that we cannot play a shared slideshow along with the shared music that was selected with that slideshow.
If the selected song from the shared slideshow is already on the Mac Mini, then I can choose it, but I cannot choose any other songs unless they are on the Mac Mini.....
It seems that Front Row will not play the selected shared song from the shared slideshow. Front Row only wants to play the songs that are on the Mac Mini for any of the shared slideshows... BUMMER.......
If you open iPhoto (not Front Row) on the Mac Mini, then select a shared slideshow, then click on the 'Play' button. You will see that Minuet in "G" is selected to play on that shared slideshow. I turned all of mine OFF for the time being as I am tired of the sample music also.
If I come up with anything new I will post it here.
    Thanks for sharing this information.

  • Front Row Wouldn't Quit

I haven't had mush of a chance to use Front Row, so yesterday I was using it to go thrugh some photos and then play some iTunes.
After I was finished and pressed the MENU button on the remote to quit, I went back and quit iPhoto and iTunes. Then I discovered my whole system to be sluggish and Front Row wouldn't open up again.
Looking at an Activity Monitor, I noted Front Row was hogging 92% of my CPU. I then tried to conduct a Force Quit, but Front Row was not on the list of running apps. Still, Front Row was shown as hogging 90% of the CPU. Front Row wouldn't re-open and I couldn't get the cpu process to stop.
Finally I had to restart the iMac.
Comments and tips would be appreciated.

    Oh then it's really bad.
Fortunately i did not have this problem (yet) on my iMac G5. But who knows?
About force quiting FrontRow: It does not show in the forcequit window, thats right. But when you use the Activity Monitor, then you see all running tasks, there you should also see the frontrow task. Select it and hit the "Stop" button, then you will be asked if you really want to kill that task, hit "Force Quit" and then it's "killed"

  • Front Row 2 - Videos won't play in mirrored mode

I have a powerbook hooked up to my TV via the video out. When I use Front Row, the menus show up on the TV fine. But when I start a movie or a TV show, I hear the audio, I see the control bar on the bottom, but I do not see the video, on either screen.
It almost looks like it is being blocked like some sort of copy protection. Any ideas?

Seemingly have the same problem as everyone else but rebooting doesn't make a difference. I just attempted to play an avi while hooked up to my TV with an Apple branded connector. Front Row (installed with Leopard 10.5 fresh install, not an upgrade or archive) would not show the video, only the sound with the bar at the bottom.
I then hooked my MacBook Pro 2.33GHz up to a second monitor via DVI cable - same problem.
But, with no external TV or Monitor hooked up, Front Row plays the avi file with video. (No change if I was in extended desktop or mirrored mode.)
I haven't tried a DVD yet or other video file types.

  • Blank screen in front row

    Hi There
Every time i try to enter Front Row - I just get a black screen, does anyone have any ideas why this might be?
    Hope you can help
    Cheers

We have just set my Dad's new 24' iMac up and whilst marveling at front row it has began to just go blank during photo viewing. It's only 2 days old. I have gotten all available updates but it's still happening. Would love to get to the bottom of this one as it is ruining a wonderful feature....

  • Displaying Front Row on TV Instead of Computer

I've connected my computer to my HD TV using a DVI-to-HDMI cable, however, even when I set the TV to be the main monitor, when I launch Front Row, it comes up on my laptops screen. How do I make it come up on my TCV screen?

You must have a third party hack like "Insomnia" installed. According to Apple, when you close the lid of a portable Apple computer, it should go to sleep. However, if you have an external keyboard (USB or Bluetooth) attached/paired, AC power plugged in and an external monitor connected then you can wake the computer.
If you have AC power and an external monitor plugged in, you should be able to wake the computer with the Apple remote. This is not documented by Apple, but people here in this forum have had it work.
In addition, people here have reported that they must restart after moving the menubar to the TV to make it the "main" screen before Front Row in Mac OS X 10.5 will recognize this configuration.

  • Stom Mac Mini from sleeping when iTunes/Front Row is playing

Just like the title says ..
When I play music through front row/iTunes, the computer still sleeps. This is not the case when playing videos. I've looked everywhere for setting to change this, but can't seem to find it.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,

It's not the computer but the monitor that falls asleep when using iTunes.
You can change this in syspreferences, energy saving.
Sleeping of monitors is suppressed when you watch videos in full screen mode.
