Computer name showing as 'windowsmediaplayer'

HI all
In the last few days I've noticed my computer name in the terminal and all the share names in the Sharing control panel has changed to 'windowsmediaplayer'
I've completely wiped my imac with a clean install (it was getting slow anyway), installed nothing, and the name is still windowsmediaplayer
My Computer Name (the top input box in the Sharing config panel) is my usual computer name
Anyone know what's going on here?

I formatted it in the disk utility in mac os install
Could it be my router/another computer on my network changing it?
Edit: For the first time I thought of checking it when not connected to my network, and indeed it's making the change whenever I'm connected. Sorry, I'm being clueless here since I don't know about this kind of stuff, is this normal?

  • Old Computer Name Shows in Shared

My wife's old iMac's name is showing in Shared on the other two macs on the network as well as the new iMac's name. The new name is correctly displayed on her mac and there is no sign of the old name on her new iMac.
How can I stop the old name appearing in Shared on the network.

Which machine shows your old computer name, the mac or the sony?
If the sony, try opening a dos window and enter
    ipconfig /flushdns

Screen saver set to show computer name has started displaying iMac then a long number followed by (3). Don't recognise this number, and why is it followed by the bracketed 3?

Hi, it's from different sharing services trying to connect or losing connection, you can rename it in...
    System Preferences>Sharing.

  • Old computer name still shows

I bought a new iMac core duo early this year and migrated all my data from my ibook to it. Not a problem, and i reinstalled Tiger on my ibook for the new owner when i sold it. I've just noticed that my old ibook computer name crops up now again even though my iMac now has a different name. How is this possible?
I'm sharing my files with a Sony Vaio (forgive me i own a laptop too), and when i connect to me network, it shows my path as ''my old ibook computername'(my ip address)'(my name:). Why does it not show my current computer name?
If anyone has any ideas and a solution i would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

Gotcha, sorry, I'm guessing you are referring to Windows Autoplay.  This should do it:
Type regedit into your search bar and bring up Registry editor. Go to the the very top with My Computer. Now go to Edit and Find. Type in the whole offending name that is bugging you, i.e. Soandso's iPhone and hit find. After it searches your registry and finds the first name select it and Edit the Name. I copy/pasted it for all the next steps. After you have found the first name don't stop there. Use F3 to find next Name in registry and So on and so fourth until you have replaced every offending name in your whole registry with the Name you want to show up i.e. Tom's iPhone or whatever? Repeat all of these steps if you have more than one name showing up in your devices? Worked 100% for me. Close regedit and reboot (very important for changes.) Plug your iPhone back in and enjoy all your names back to normal.

  • Terminal-IP address instead of computer name is showing

Hi, my computer is behaving strangely lately and I noticed that in terminal the host name is displayed like this:
    c-XX-XXX-XX-XX-XXX:~ myusername%
with XX numbers corresponding to my actual IP address
When I looked in my 1 month old backup, it is displayed correctly there with an actual drive name.
In addition, the current shell is tsch, despite the fact that I am running OSX10.4.11 where it is supposed to be bash as far as I understand.
Is displaying IP address in terminal instead of computer name normal? If not, how to reset this?
Any help would be much appreciated.

    BDAqua,
    My report:
    1. Moved preferences.plist from /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist into trash.
    2. rebooted.
    3. Computer now shows [localhost] in terminal as a host name-success. However, now Internet does not work.
    4. Went to System preferences>Network>Built-in-Ethernet. There was a blank page (all settings gone).
    5. No matter. Inputed comcast.net in Search domains field (Comcast is my provider). Clicked on Apply now. All settings came back, internet works.
    6. Now Terminal again shows my IP as a host name, but at least I know that this change came from Comcast.
Unexpected benefit: Apparently this procedure got rid of annoying "Your settings are being modified by another application" bug-Good to know, thanks.
Conclusion: For some reason Comcast sees fit to modify Terminal settings.
Big thanks for making the problem clearer.

  • Terminal shows old computer name (after migration)

After using migration assistant (over Ethernet) from a 2007 mini to a mid-2011 mini:    the Terminal shows the old computer name in the prompt.
(Many other oddities -- every file action brings up "Finder wants to make changes" and requires a password, to move or copy or delete any file).    I see this problem has been reported before over the  years but I did not find any answer that didn't have further questions

Aha, changing it in "Sharing" seems to have worked for me (suggestion from 'Kappy' in the 2008 "Re: Migration: (UNIX) thread, although it did not work for others in that thread at the time):

  • Workgroup Computer name will showed as "#Error" - Logical Disk Extension Management Pack By David Allen

Anyone is applying the Logical Disk Extension Management Pack By David Allen?
I have the issue whereby the Computer name will showed as "#Error" on the managed computer which is in
    Workgroup environment.
Refer to this screenshot --> https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=75e44d0edffe5025#cid=75E44D0EDFFE5025&id=75E44D0EDFFE5025%21942.
Is anyone know the way to fix this?
    Thanks!
    regards, Han Seen.

The solution I used is to edit the management pack: the report displays the computer name only for computers that contains suffix in its name. if in SCOM the computer name is hostname.domain.net, only hostname will be shown as computer name.
you can change it by editing the management pack:
replace line number 2230 instead of
    <Value>=Left(Fields!Computer.Value,(instr(Fields!Computer.Value,".")-1))</Value>
    replace it with
    <Value>=Fields!Computer.Value</Value>
now it will show you the full computer name under computer name area, and workgroup computer will be shown as well.

  • When ipod plugged into computer it shows someone elses name

My brother plugged his ipod into my computer to charge it and now everytime I plug in my ipod it only shows his name and info on my computer and not my own.   I can't change it or undo it. What can I do?

On my computer it shows up as my brothers ipod, but on itunes it shows up as me. I tried logging out of the store and relogging back it but it does nothing.
If I was to access it on my computer thru "my comp" and not itunes it shows my brothers ipod now (even if he's not plugged into my laptop)

A new user name showed up on my computer after a windows 8 update. A name I do not know or recognize. After the update,  the screen showed 2 users, myself and the name "John". it wasn't there yesterday, & I am the only user. I also bought the laptop new so it can't be a previous user. Can anyone tell me how to remove "John" from my computer. I am going to do a system restore & see if that works. In the meantime, if anyone has ever had this happen, what did you do?

  • Computer name being show as "localhost" when trying to bind to directory

I am trying to bind my computer (OS 10.4.11) to my server (10.4.11) but each time I go to bind it the computer name is shown as "localhost" rather than the computer's real name. Thoughts?

I think Directory Utility is in 10.5+, it's called Directory Access in previous versions (at least in 10.4). I have an OD running on the Mac server that I am trying to bind to, the AD/windows server is just for the PCs.
I did find this though about the mDNSresponder error I'm getting:
    (from http://lists.apple.com/archives/bonjour-dev/2005/Aug/msg00020.html)
-65557 means NAT Traversal error. You need to be using a router that
supports NAT-PMP or UPnP if you want to register your hostname
    successfully using DNS Update.
I enabled UPnP on my router/firewall but it did not help.

  • My Apple TV is displaying the wrong computer name. It is showing up as "j".  How do I change it?

Just recently my apple tv is displaying "j" as my computer name.  I did a restore and a reset on the apple tv but the problem still remains, also check itunes on my imac and evertything seems fine though.  Anybody have any ideas on how to fix this?

Try to remove history and bookmarks entries that are wrong and revisit the site(s).
A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • How do you sync playlist made on iPhone 6 back to iTunes on Macbook Pro?  The playlist name shows up but with no content.

I made a playlist on my iPhone 6 and thought it would sync to my iTunes account when I connected my phone to my Macbook Pro but it did not.  The playlist name showed up under my playlist names, but there was no content in it and it had a different playlist symbol (music note with bars) than the Smart Playlists (gear) I have made in the past on my computer.  The playlist has a few hundred songs on it, so I don't want to have to do it manually. Is there a way to get the playlist content I made on my phone into my iTunes on my computer?  Thanks!

How did the playlist get on your iphone?
If you created an on-the-go playlist then from page 81 of the manual:
"When you make an on-the-go playlist and then sync iPhone to your computer, the
playlist is saved on iPhone and in your iTunes library, then deleted from iPhone.
The first is saved as “On-The-Go 1,” the second as “On-The-Go 2,” and so on.
To put a playlist back on iPhone, select iPhone in the iTunes sidebar, click the Music tab, and set the playlist to sync."

  • I bought a new laptop with Windows 7. My computer name in Windows has changed, and now, my Ipad can't find Itunes

I bought a new laptop with Windows 7. My computer name in Windows has changed, and now, my Ipad can't find Itunes, and Itunes can't find my Ipad. [email protected]

Ok, if reinstalling iTunes as suggested above does not resolve the issue of iTunes recognising the iPad then try this -
Firstly, make sure that your device is not hidden (left hand pane). If it just reads device then toggle between SHOW and HIDE.
Secondly, try all the other ports on your computer, even a number of times.
Thirdly, make sure your lead /connections are no faulty.
Fourthly, if you have another computer try plugging your device into it without taking any action, give it a moment, remove it and try it back in your other computer again.
Failing all that, see here - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
And failing all that put the device into Recovery mode. See here and note the paragraph 'If you restore from a different computer.... ' down near the bottom of the page -
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/itunes/
As for making your new laptop your 'home computer' follow these instructions -
    1. Without connecting your iPad to your computer -
    A) Install iTunes / make sure the latest version of iTunes is installed.
    B) Go to the Store tab and click on "Authorise This Computer".
    C) Go to Edit, click on Preferences [iTunes and Preferences on Macs] and click on Devices. Put a check mark in the box next to "Prevent  iPods/iPhones/iPads from syncing automatically". Click OK and close iTunes.
    2.  Connect your iPad to your computer -
    A) Start iTunes (it will not start automatically because of the action at 1(C) above).
    B) Right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select "Transfer purchases".
    C) When the transfer has completed, right click on your iPad again and select "Backup".
    D) When the backup has completed, left click on your iPad, click on the Apps tab, and put a check mark in the box next to "Sync Apps", and then click on "Apply" (bottom right).
    E) Unless you want to always do a manual sync (as I do), go back to Edit, Preferences [iTunes and Preferences on Macs] and uncheck the box next to "Prevent your iPod.....".
    F) Finally, on your iPad, check that everything is syncing properly. If not, go back to iTunes and check all settings.
NB You should not lose any apps. However, any 'purchased' missing apps can be downloaded again FOC. As with updates, this must be done with the Apple ID under which they were originally 'purchased'.
