Computer no longer sees DVD or Zip drives
Hey there all,
Here's one for you. I have a G4 Gigabit Ethernet that I've upgraded with a Powerlogix 1.4 Ghz processor and an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. The two drives that came with the computer (the Zip 100 and the DVD-ROM) have stopped working. I can't pinpoint exactly when because for a while I used them only rarely. I do know that they worked after upgrading the chip and I've only just now upgraded the graphics card so I don't think either of those have affected them.
They are still getting power because the light on the Zip comes on at startup (and will sometimes stay on for a loooooooong time though it doesn't make noise and there is no disk inside) and the DVD drive will still open and close. However, neither drive will mount when a disk of any sort is inserted.
I've tried running System Profiler and they don't show up in the lists there either. I checked the ribbon and power cords internally and all the connections SEEM ok. I even just now tried hitting the Cuda button to reset things but that turned up bupkiss.
Any ideas? Any advice? Anyone ever dealt with this before? I 've been shopping around for new drives but before I lay out the cash for that I want to make sure that these aren't saveable. This computer has been an absolute rock for about 6 years and has never had any major problems that I couldn't resolve so I'd hopefully not have to replace it.
Thanks all for your time and consideration, I'd really appreciate any and all help you can offer. Cheers!

Hi, RaptorRed67 -
Does the fact that the Zip drive read light comes on at startup and stays on for minutes to hours afterwards bear any clues?
That light is intended to serve as a diesk-being-read indicator. If it stays steady on, that usually means the Zip drive has somehow managed to hang, and needs to be reset. It can also indicate a non-readable disk is lodged inside.
The way to address a disk hung inside is to restart, then immediately press the mouse button, keep it held down for a while. This is a hardware instruction to the Mac to eject all removable media, and operates before any drive has tried to load a disk which may be present.
If the drive itself has hung, which can happen after a non-mountable disk has been ejected, the only way to reset it is to power it off. This means shutting the Mac down - a restart won't do it.
Since you've unplugged that drive, the Mac was probably powered down when you did that. This would indicate there may be something else wrong with the drive, if it is in fact the culprit.
The two drives, optical and Zip, need to be jumpered correctly in order for both to function, just like hard drives. The optical drive should be jumpered as Master, the Zip drive as Slave. It is possible that a jumper fell off.
There may also be something wrong with the controller that serves the bus shared by the two drives. Don't know how to test for that other than to take the machine to an AASP.

Computer can't find DVD/CD-ROM drives after installing iTunes
After installing iTunes, my computer no longer can detect my DVD-ROM and CD-RW drives. They've disappeared from the "My Computer" window.
I ran "System Restore" and the disc drives showed up, but now they're undetected once again after I re-installed iTunes. I've restarted, I've uninstalled and then reinstalled iTunes, I've run the built-in diagnostic self-checks on the drives, I downloaded updated drivers, I uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, spent 1 hour on the phone with Apple support, and finally spent 2 hours on the phone with Dell Support. Nothing. Please help--I want to be able to use my iPod with Windows.

For the most part, what's occurring is one of two things. Either...
A) an application (such as Roxio, Nero, iTunes, etc.) is installing a driver file (as a .SYS) or replacing a working driver file that is referenced within your registry. For some folks, the replaced driver is still referenced by either an UpperFilterCheck or a LowerFilterCheck, and the device manager is actually seeking out that file that, well... no longer exists. Or, when you try and uninstall the application (iTunes is the frequent transgressor) everything is removed, including the related driver files, but the registry isn't altered... so the device manager continues to try and locate that driver file... which no longer exists.
or
B) a virus (or trojan) burrows its way into your file structure, and creates an element of itself disguised as a .SYS file. We've seen this happen before with viral elements disguising themselves as audio or video card driver files, in the efforts of masking themselves from lower-class anti-virus programs (or un-updated ones). In this case, they take on the name of a driver file that the optical drives are "familiar" with, and so, with the intention of being "fast, friendly, and efficient", the optical drives are tapped to utilize this new "driver" file... and it gets referenced in the registry as such.
However, when your anti-virus actually snaps to it, and removes the virus / trojan, and you go off on a virus-killing mission, galavanting through the registry and cleaning the little buggers out in Safe Mode and everything... you might remove the viral elements... but... the reference to them might still remain. The device manager is still looking for that "driver file", and will cause the optical drives to lock up in a Code 39 or Code 41 because of it.
Either way, the thing to do to reclaim your optical drives is located in your registry here:
HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE1 0318}
You'll want to have that open, and a mini-window of the following:
START -> CONTROL PANEL -> SYSTEM -> Hardware (tab) -> DEVICE MANAGER -> Offending Drive (with yellow tag by it) Right-Mouse-Click and PROPERTIES -> Driver (tab) -> DRIVER DETAILS
Notice that list. It references all the drivers that that particular drive is utilizing. There should be a single .DLL (dynamic link library) file and multiple .SYS files. It's the .SYS files we're focusing on, and they should be located in your C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\ folder stem. If you want to open a new window explorer, and go verify that each of those driver files still exists in that folder stem, you may.
At this point, compare the Driver File Detail list with the Registry Tree Location you're sitting in, and look at the UpperFilterCheck and LowerFilterCheck key values. Your offending key value will NOT be on your Driver File Detail list!!! It might be as small as "PFC" or something else, but that value is referencing to a driver file that no longer exists. Delete that offending key value. Close the registry.
Close the Driver File Details and Drive Properties windows. At this point, to finish this up, you need to Soft Uninstall (Right-mouse-click on the drive, and hit "Uninstall" ) the drive(s), let the Device Manager refresh... then hit ACTION -> Scan For Hardware Changes ...
This should start a new Found New Hardware cycle, and.... poof!... your drives should be back to normal
I don't know if this will help, I think it should.
Good Luck. Post back if you have a problem.

T61 no longer recognizes DVD super-multi drive
My T61 for some reason has stopped recognizing my DVD super-multi drive (GSA-U10N). I do not use the optical drive often, so I am not sure when during the past couple of months this occured. I have tried finding it using Lenovo System Toolbox and Device Manager. I have tried restarting. I have tried physically removing the drive and putting it back in. No matter what I try, my T61 says that there is no optical drive. The little green light next to the drive slot remains on all the time.
My T61 is a 7662 CTO, Core 2 Duo T7500, 4 GB ram, 100 GB HD, NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M running Windows Vista Ultimate, 64-bit, SP2.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.you should try to run a linux live cd, and see whether the drive is detected. If it is not, then either the cd drive or the motherboard is having a hardware problem.

Time Machine no longer sees my External Hard Drive
I am running an Apple iMac 27" Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz with MAC OS X v.10.6.4
I have been using a LaCie 500GB External Hard Drive exclusively assigned to my Time Machine Backups. This has been working fine for the past 6 months. Now, this USB externally powered hard drive no longer shows up on my desktop. It no longer shows up in the Finder either.
Where it does show up is in the Apple Menu: About This Mac | More Info... | Hardware | USB | USB High-Speed BUS as "LaCie Hard Drive USB" with all of its specifications:
LaCie Hard Drive USB:
Product ID: 0x0951
Vendor ID: 0x059f (LaCie)
Version: 0.00
Serial Number: 152D203380B6
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: LaCie
Location ID: 0x24300000
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 2
HD appears to be spinning and emits a steady vibration that I observed before when it was working fine. One single soft click is heard on startup. Yellow solid light indicates drive is operational. I never see a blinking light when this HD starts up, it shows a solid yellow light right away.
From a "Time Machine Widget", I see that my Time Machine backup is failing with message:
Error -35 while resolving alias to backup target
Backup failed with error: 19
When I go to Apple Menu / System Preferences / Time Machine, I see that the Time Machine is turned ON with this information:
Name: Time Machine Backups
Available: <empty>
Oldest Backup: <empty>
Latest Backup: Delayed <--- this is in red
Next Backup: when disk is connected
To resolve my problem:
I tried shutting down & restarting the MAC while the Ext. HD was turned ON but it refuses to appear.
I tried unplugging & replugging at the USB connection but MAC does not respond either way. No nasty message for having improperly disconnected a drive and no message to acknowledge a newly connected drive. The drive is totally ignored.
I can't use the Disk Utility tool to verify or repair the HD because the drive does not appear on the left pane.
Before I declare 6 months of Time Machine backups as forever lost and buy a new backup drive is there anything else I can do?W e e e e l l l l l or should I say wheeeeeieeeee! Solved - Thank You
I could not use "Disk Utility" because as I already stated, it did not show the HD on the left pane to allow me to do anything about the invisible drive.
So I followed through with your suggestion to switch the USB cable. This was an easy thing to do as I happen to have another of these LaCie Drives that I use on another of my computers. I turned the faulty drive OFF, switched the cable (the power cable fell off in the process & I plugged that back in), turned the HD back ON, waited about 30 seconds and the MAC recognized the drive and popped it back on my desktop & Finder, then Time Machine started the Backup.
I did not have to restart the MAC.
I was skeptical that the USB cable could be the culprit but indeed it was!
Time Machine completed its backup while I was writing this.

HELP! Computer no longer sees base station
Hope that somebody can help - I recently changed the password settings on my airport extremem base station and all of a sudden my computer will not recognise that there is a base station in the vicinity - I am using air port admin assistamt. I have rescanned and rescanned to no avail.
Recently I did a hard reset of the base station and, although I can connect to the internet through the wireless connection (the generic apple base station name appears in my lists of networks available) but I cannot get into the admin assistant as the computer does not seem to recognise it. A mac that is runningh 10.3 recognised the base station and I could configure it with admin assistant but no joy with the main mac.
Any help would be great.
Many thanks!
BarnabyHi Barnaby,
You can reset the BaseStation's password again and start afresh (see the manual)
Can you ping the BaseStation from the Mac that refuses to see it (from the terminal)?

Computer no longer recognizes hardware with firewire
I have a Canon GL2 and a Sony GV-HD700 that plays mini SD tape. Suddenly the computer no longer sees the hardware and will not allow me to download video. Been on the phone to Apple Care and Genius Bar and they can't help me. I am getting worried. What happened?
Hi
May be help here ?
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
• Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
iMovie pref file resides.
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
and is named. *com.apple.iMovie.plist *
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
Now restart iMovie.
• Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
• Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
• Screen must be set to Million-colors
• Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
iMovie updated ?
QuickTime updated ?
Mac OS version ?
• Program miss-match. iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
• Program miss-match. iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
• Program miss-match. iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

I run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac.

How to reject the zip from zip drive
Hello to all!
I have an apple g4 powermac quicksilver with an zip 250 drive.
How do i reject the zip disc because the button for reject the zip disc lies behind the front?
Best regards and have a nice weekend!!!
ChuckI assume that you're asking for the standard method to eject a Zip disk, after a Zip disk has been inserted. If this is your question, follow Allan's suggestions. If there is a disk that's stuck in the drive, you may need to directly access the drive's manual eject hole and insert a straightened paper clip to force eject the disk. This can/should be done with the computer powered OFF. On older Zip drives, the manual eject hole was on the drive's front bezel and on newer drives, it was on the rear.

MacBook Air No Longer Sees Remote External Drive
I have an iMac with a FW800 connected external hard drive. I use it for Time Machine backups. Also use an Airport Extreme for wireless connection. My MacBook Air at one time was able to "see" that external drive via the Airport and I used it to backup the laptop with Time Machine. Now, all of a sudden, the MBA no longer sees the external drive. What has happened? I use the MBA only occasionally, and told Time Machine to backup only when I tell it to. So, LOTS probably has changed since the last backup. But, what change has broken this connection? My iMac sees it just fine and does Time Machine backups just fine. When I want to share the DVD drive of the iMac, that works as it should. I just can't see that dang external drive any longer. Both machines are at 10.5.6
Can you folks give me some places to start looking to get things working again?Does the time machine volume meet the requirements?
-internal drive, not start up disk
-XSAN volume
-USB drive
-fire wire drive
-eSATA drive
-network server via AFP (from machines running Leopard), including machines running file sharing
the volume must be formated as Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Extended (case-sensitive)
You can't use:
-Boot Camp partition
-iPod
-disk image
-AirPort Disk

Internal Zip Drive and Internal DVD Burner Question:
Where can I find an internal Zip drive for my b&w g3 desktop?
Or should I just get an external USB or 1394 Zip drive?
+(I have a 20gb hard drive that doesn't have its computer anymore and I connected it to a Gateway 2000 and the hard drive has Windows 98 SE with lots of files...jpegs for example...and I am going to get the files off of the hard drive before I erase it and put it on another desktop. The only way I can get it off is with a Zip drive. The USBs wouldn't work).+
Besides that one reason, I was going to get an internal Zip Drive for my Apple desktop anyways.
I have a DVD Rom in the apple desktop. I also want to upgrade it to a DVD Burner / DVD+R/RW or whatever it is called. Is that possible?
Message was edited by: In-CorrectI have a B&W G3/400 purchased in '96 which I've upgraded with the PowerLogix 1.1 GHz Zif Upgrade. When Apple introduced OSX I also installed and ATA hard drive, and a few years ago I replaced the original Apple CD ROM with a Pioneer DV D-RW DVR-111D (which surprisingly burns DVD's faster than my new iMac 2.8GHz Intel Core2 Duo). The Pioneer DVD burner works like a charm. There were no issues at all when it came to the instyallation: rebooting, reading installation CD's or what have you. It was true, PLUG & PLAY.
The G3 is currently running:
1) OSX 10.4.11, on an ATA drive (Maxtor 6L100PO; 93.37GB) &
2) MAC OS 9.2.2 on the original equipment 9GB SCSI Drive
The G3 cannot take advantage of the ZIF processor upgrade in OSX 10.4.11, and I am in the process of downgrading OSX to 10.4.9 so that I can take advantage of the faster processor. According to PowerLogix the ZIF upgrade is not compatible with a later version of OSX after 10.4.9 as they have been unable to keep up with the changes Apple has been making in the OS.
I hope this helps.
