Computer nosiy when second display dimmed

OK, I know this sounds really odd but I'm glad I resolved it.
I have the 20" imac and an old 17" Apple Studio Display as an extended desktop just to the left of the imac. Well when I got it the comptuer was very quiet, and over the last day or two it was very noise and I could not figure out why. Sounded very much like fan noise or vibrating plastic. So I was kind of disapointed thinking once the computer got settled in and used for a week or so that it would no longer be quiet.
So it happens to be bright in my office today and I open the display preference to turn up the brightness on my second monitor. To my surprise as soon as I do this the noise is gone. I can sit there and play with the brightness slider and make the noise come and go at will.
My old screen is not that bright anyway so I'll just leave it at full brigtness. I expect if I add some space between the displays this could solve it as well, but I like them side by side.
Not a probelm for me now, but just out of curiosity does anyone have ideas what is behind the noise. The noise volume increases as the screen goes from full brightness to about 2/3 brightness. From that point down the volume of the noise is pretty steady.

this sounds very odd, and I have no answer. I have an older 20" dell hooked up via DVI to MINI DVI, no issues with fan getting louder or not.

  • Crash when second display attached

I'm using Aperture in this configuration:
    Aperture 1.1.2
MacBook Pro 15" (with external monitor)
    OS X 10.4.7
Aperture is randomly crashing when the second external display is enabled and Aperture is configured to use it. I can crash Aperture fairly easily, although the crashes are random. If the second display is enabled but not being used by Aperture, I do not have crashes.
    Questions:
    - Has anyone else seen this issue?
    - How do I fix it?
    Thanks
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I am not experiencing crashes, but I am noticing interference on the monitors when Aperture is running using 2 monitor mode. As I move from picture to picture, or zoom in or out of pictures, I see small blue and red squares all over the screen ... as if something was writing to the video buffer. The problem does not manifest itself at any time when Aperture is not running.

  • Using the computer in a second display while a presentation is going

I am not sure how to phrase this in a forum search. I have two displays. I'd like to view a presentation on one display while being able to work on other things in the other. But when I play the presentation, one monitor goes black while the other one presents the show. Is there a way to be able to use the monitor that goes blank to do other stuff?
I'm using keynote to display a referencing program I made in Keynote when I check drafting, but I'd like to be able to do additional research in the other display without disturbing the keynote presentation.
Any suggestions would be a lot of help.
    Thanks!

I have not found any solution. Keynote naturally assumes the secondary display is for presentation notes for the presentor. As it is, Keynote is pretty useful, but just think what it could be with just a few more features like this! I bet that eventually this feature makes it into the application. Give Apple another 15 years and I'm sure we'll see it.

  • Is it possible to use a iMac G4 flat panel as a second display

    Hi all,
I am not sure whether it's the right place to post this question but here it goes.
We have a 15 inches iMac G4 that's getting slow and are considering upgrading to one of the newer iMac. However, would it be possible to keep using the display and the hard drive of the old computer as a second display and an external drive, respectively for the new Mac?
    Any tips or advices welcome
    Many thanks in advance.
    Best,
    Olivier
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Short answer: not easily.
If the machine is "getting slow" as in, you have the same software that you've had for awhile but things actually seem to be slowing down, I'd first looks at doing some diagnostics before replacing the machine. Maybe even try backing up all your personal stuff and do a fresh format/clean install of the OS.
If you just mean "I notice this machine I've had awhile now seems slow compared to my friends' shiny new Core 2 Duo iMac" then that's a whole other matter .
No reason you couldn't pull out the old hard drive and use it in an external case...or for that matter leave the old machine booted in Firewire Target Disk Mode to access its drive. Maybe the best solution is to network the two machines through a router or Ethernet switch (ridiculously easy), keeping the old (intact) system as a backup. That last is probably what I'd do assuming that space allows.

  • Power Manager idle timers don't work correctly when set to dim the display in 15 minutes

Instead of dimming the display to 0 on AC power, Power Manager dims it to 4, which is a normal setting when on DC power. Then when the laptop is resumed by tapping a key, it "restores" the brightness to an incorrect setting of 15, and a few seconds later back to 8, which is the correct setting. I haven't noticed this problem when setting to dim the display below 15 minutes, but the restoration of screen brightness onscreen notification is displayed twice in both cases.

    Hey there lenssd9,
It seems strange that the Power Manager would be behaving this way, although speaking with some colleagues they also have encountered similar occurences- but instead describing it as if "the engine were warming up with a high idle, and then returning to a standard idle."
What I can recommend is to first, ensure that your Power Manager Software is up to date. And then try adjusting the configuration within the Power Manager. If you will, see if you encounter this with a idle display under 15 minutes.
Thank You lnssd9, I look forward to your response.

  • My Mac Pro Desk Top computer no longer can "see" my second display??

I've tried reversing the connections on the back of the MacPro but it still doesn't "see" the second display.  I've had these two displays hooked up for years with no problems.  I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion and I just had the MacPro in the Apple Store for a  "One To One" transfer of data to my new MacBook Pro laptop.  When I brought it back home it still worked fine.  I then was cleaning up some stuff and I know I went into my "Users and Groups" panel in System Preferences and I did remove some items from the "Login Items" list that open automatically so maybe that is the problem??  I know the second display is getting power and recognizes it's connection to the compuiter because when I disconnect it, it says, "no signal" and when I reconnect it, it just goes to sleep.  Advice appreciated.

Some of the graphics cards that had two DVI connectors had one Dual-Link (suitable for all resolutions including wider than 1920 wide) and one Single-Link (suitable for resolutions up to 1920, but not wider). This does not appear to be your problem, since both are less than 1920 wide.
The "Drivers" business is a complete Red Herring (Not Applicable), as the Mac does not use Drivers for displays -- it uses a unified driver for the Display CARD, and customizes it based on the capabilities reported by the Display when connected. In order to get this to work, the display must correctly self-identify.
To verify that the display is correctly detected, look in:
About This Mac > ( More Info ) > Graphics and Displays ...
... a correctly self-identified display shows its Name and its maximum resolution. be skeptical, this information does not update when you plug/unplug the display, and you have to close and re-open this window (or possibly the entire program) to get the information to refresh after a change.
If either display provides a USB cord, it must be plugged in to complete the display connection and provide display ID and control (this is much more common with Apple displays that third-party displays).
Is there any evidence of trauma to the display connectors or cables? Any bent pins on the connectors?

  • When running windows in vmware fusion how do I extend my windows desktop to my second display

I am running Windows 7 x64 Enterprise in a VMware  session session on my MacBook pro.  I was just given a second thunderbolt display today and I want to be able to extend my desktop when running the windows VM.  When the VM is shut down it's working perfectly and awesome.  However when I'm logged into and working with in the VM, I'm limited to only using one display.  It would be very helpful to be able to extend to the second screen as I need to run 3-4 nearly full screen apps at once and would like to utilize this second display.

You might get better results raising that question in the VMware Fusion forum. I don't have two monitors so I can't test anything but a quick check on that forum for that question gave: "Normally if a user wants to use two monitors with a VM, they can select "Use All Displays in Full Screen" in Full screen mode."

Long story short I solved the problem, and it was totally a model issue. It is the HP w2207, which apparently has a problem with iMac 24 inch, the nvidia graphics card, mini DVi to DVI and 10.4 in particular. You see these two devices, just don't get along very well. The imac tries to auto set the monitor at one resolutions and the monitor tries to auto set itself at another, and they will continue to do this indefinitely. However both when I switched to a VGA cable, which I believe prevents the monitor from auto setting itself, and when I upgraded to 10.5 solved the problem.
Personally I didn't mind the upgrade, as I was planning to do it anyway, and is definitely the better solution as there is noticeable difference in the color between the two cables.
Anyway thanks for the help everyone.

  • Using computer in closed clamshell with second display sleep issues

    Hi,
I'd really appreciate someone's input here - this article (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3131) guides you through using a macbook pro in closed clamshell with a second display - the trouble is that my machine goes straight back to sleep within seconds of me waking it up?? - I'm using the 'allow bluetooth devices to wake this computer' setting.
    Can you help?

  • Mouse moving to second display when off

I have a late 2012 iMac running Mavericks with a Samsung SyncMaster as a second display.  When the 2nd monitor is turned off (manually from the power button on the monitor) my mouse pointer will still move to that display.  I personally don't use the 2nd display, but my husband and kids do but on their own logins.  I've unchecked the "displays have separate spaces" in mission control, unplugged and plugged the monitor back in, and with every restart it still does it.  Any ideas how to prevent this?  It's get really annoying when I can't find the pointer and have to move the mouse for what seems like forever to get it visible again.

I want to add the second display is connected to the iMac via mini display port to DVI adapter, plugged into thunderbolt port.

Please help me.  I bought a song which played on my computer, but when I tranfered it to my IPod, only the first 30 seconds of it will play. Help please. Is there a way I can contact Apple to complain, because I'm not paying $1.29 for the first 30 seconds of a song. Or is there anyway to fix it? (note: i have already synced my Ipod and it has the latest version of ITunes)

Im having a similar promblem! Only its doesnt work on my Itunes library and the song ends at 49 seconds. Have you fixed your problem yet?

"That's why I'm wondering whether they still can fix it as lifetime guaranty or not?"
    No, not lifetime.
    According to the referencd article:
"If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within four years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty."
