Computer not recognizing new ipod nano.

My computer will not recognize my new ipod nano.  It is a replacement for one that was broken.

Have you worked through each and every single suggestion in this Apple support document?

There's a long article about that problem:

You have to go step by step, starting with: does Windows recognize the iPod?

  • Problem recognizing new Ipod nano

When I connect my new ipod nano to my mac and open itunes, the nano device is not recognized.  How do it get it to connect?

    To clarify Nathan's post:
The way the iPod works under Windows requires a certain file (iPodService.exe) to be running.
However, this service can only run on one account at a time. So Windows opens it in the first account opened. If you switch users, the service is still running (only) in the first account running.
A simple restart, followed by logging in to your account, will fix this, because your account will be given access to the service.
In the future, your options are to use the Log Out feature instead of Fast User Switching, or to disable the service from running under any accounts other than your own. The former is simple, the latter, not so much, but I'll include instructions so that you can do it if you're comfortable with the somewhat advanced options you'll need to access.
About Fast User Switching in iTunes for Windows
How to force iPodService to start in only one account
Use to avoid the logoff problem
Open the account you want it permanently off of, go to the desktop, right click on My Computer, and hit Manage.
Hit Services & Applications>Services>iPodsrv (or iPodservice, it's an older version).
Double click, set the 'startup type' to Disabled, and it won't open in that account.
Rinse, repeat for any other accounts as needed.

  • Will my computer read my new ipod nano 3rd gen?

i just bought a new ipod nano 3rd gen from circuit city before i opened it i looked on the back and saw system requirments it says nothing about being compatible with windows xp media center edition and i have windows XP media center edition 2002 sp2. will the ipod nano 3rd gen work with my computer?

Yes it will work fine. iTunes just needs XP and doesn't really care what sort of crazy version that came with whatever computer you bought. It is still just XP maybe configured or a little more specifically.

p.s. This is a Tablet laptop I assume?

  • Computer not recognizing either my nano or shuffle

I have both the nano 2nd gen and shuffle, neither units are being recognized by my computer,in the same instance my girlfriends 4gb nano works perfectly.I have tried multiple suggestions, installed, uninstalled, reset etc.Could they both be junk?

Have you had a chance to look at these troubleshooting pages? They may be of some help:

  • My apple is not recognizing my ipod nano G4, has always worked in the past. Need to charge it, but it won't charge. please help. have read troubleshooting, checked connectionsp

my mac doesnt recognize my ipod nano G4, its always worked before. read the trouble shoots, checked all connections. it needs to charge and wont do it.

Try the suggestions in article - iPod not recognized in iTunes and Mac desktop.  If the suggestions do not work, more than likely you need a new battery.  Take the iPod Nano to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

  • Windows 8.1 is not recognizing my IPOD Nano

When I plug in my Ipod Nano 4th gen to my laptop, it does not recognize it. ITunes never really worked either. Is it because I have Windows 8.1?

I have the same problem with a nano 7th gen, and windows 8.1  It was working fine a few days ago. As of today, if I connect the nano to my PC with itunes already launched the nano appears in the computer's file explorer window momentarily then disappears.  If I connect the nano before launching itunes, the nano appears in the file explorer the file explorer window until I launch itunes then the nano immediately disappears.
I tried all the suggestions in the helpful screen that appeared when itunes cheerfully reported the failure to connect, including: updating itunes, removing and reinstalling itunes, resetting the nano, closing all the windows, rebooting the computer, changing cables.  After several hours of trying combinations of procedures to work through the problem, I made an appointment and took the offending computer and elusive nano to the Genius Bar in Palo Alto.  After two more hours of efforts on the part of a couple more gentle geniuses, Apple reported confidently that cause is because windows 8.1 is no longer compatible with itunes.  (Note, the nano still worked fine with an Apple laptop at the store.)
The nice people at Apple were very apologetic and offered a refund for the nano, which offer I reluctantly accepted. Apple cheerfully refunded full purchase price on the spot.  It was a sad moment for me hand over my nano as I really liked it very much, aside from the minor fact that it no longer works.
The solution would appear to be simple: don't buy a PC with windows 8.1, and don't install windows 8.1 on your computer if you wish to use a nano.  Don't buy the nano 7th gen if you have windows 8.1 or wish to buy a computer with windows 8.1.  And if you find yourself in this situation, simply return the nano or the computer; Apple seems happy to provide a refund.  I'm not so sure how well you will fare with the PC people.

  • ITunes not recognizing my iPod nano 3rd gen!

I have connected my ipod (3rd gen) to my macbook but itunes is not recognizing it. I have read several forums (including here) and tried some trouble shooting steps. My iTunes software is up to date. iTunes opens when i connect the ipod and it shows up in finder under "no name". It worked fine last month on an imac w/ no problems. Any ideas? Thanks

If you have not already, disconnect the iPod and restart your Mac.  Do this to Reset the iPod.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
Once the Mac restarts, run iTunes and connect the iPod.
If that does not help, try putting the iPod into Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
then, connect it to the Mac running iTunes.  It's possible that iTunes will tell you that you need to Restore the iPod.

  • Computer not recognizing my iPod anymore?

Um... I just tried to plug my iPod into my computer, but the computer, nor iTunes is recognizing it. Nothing is showing up.
Then, I tried again, and a little bubble on my toolbar popped up and said "One of the USB devices attatched to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it"
What do I do?? It was working fine before!
(btw, I did leave it in the car for a few days, could the cold have an effect on this?)

I had the exact same problem about 10 minutes ago. I was freaking out because I'm going on vacation soon and I was getting all worked up because none of my three power sources were charging it and it wasn't even turning on at all.
I called Support and the automated phone person gave me these steps:
    1. Plug the iPod into the computer
    2. Set it down on a flat surface
    3. Take index fingers and hold menu and center button for about 5 seconds (it actually took me 20 seconds)
It then connected to the computer and turned on. I don't know why trying to reset it normally didn't work but try this and I hope it helps!!

  • Old Windows XP not recognizing my iPod nano?

I've tried to connect my iPod to my desktop but nothing at all happens. When I connect to my laptop (which hasn't been reformatted like my desktop) the iPod fires up. All my music is on my desktop so I need to figure this out. I DLed SP2 but still no avile. What could be wrong?

3rd generation iPods use Firewire and they are not USB compatible. Get a PCI firewire card, insert it into the computer and enjoy the convenience of the superior connection.

  • Computer not recognizing my Ipod

I just got an ipod, again, and my computer won't recognize my ipod. Same with itunes or ipod updater. I keep installing and reinstalling and keep on putting the software that came with the ipod but it dosen't work.
    Dell   Windows XP

i had the same problem. the first thing you should try is to reinstall windows. if that doesnt work, it didnt work for me, then you need to buy a new usb card. i bought a new usb port and my ipod finally started to work after nothing else i tried helped. i got one from newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815104216
and so far it had worked fine. if you reinstall windows, make sure you back everything up first. if you buy a usb card, make sure you have and open pci slot first.

  • Computer not recognizing the ipod.

I have plugged my ipod into 4 different usb ports and nothing will happen.

Why don't you try this, use a USB drive to copy over
your iPod updater to another computer and then just
connect to that computer and see if it's recognized,
if that dosent work try connecting it using firewire
    if you can
I am having the same problem. i only have one computer and my connection worket just fine until now. i can hear that my usb connects to the compurer by that click sound, but it wont recognize.is that possible that i disabled something on my computer so the removable devices option wont pop up when i connect?

  • HT3215 Hi, I just got my new iPod Nano 4th Gen. and the screen is blank... It's not on and its plugged into my Mac OS X Mountain Lion. I don't know what to do. Help!?

Hi, I just got my new iPod Nano 4th Gen. and the screen is blank... It's not on and its plugged into my Mac OS X Mountain Lion. I don't know what to do. Help!?

If it is plugged into a USB hub (or the spare keyboard port), try connecting it to a direct USB port.
Also, try doing this Reset procedure, while it is connect to power.
