Computer not responding during migration assist

I bought a 27" iMac and have been trying to use migration assist to transfer my files and settings over from my 17" MacBook Pro with little success.  The iMac recognizes the MacBook and the confirmation code pops up on both but once the migration begins, the iMac has a message pop up that says the MacBook is not responding, even though it has a message saying that the iMac is ready.
I've tried searching other posts here but can't seem to find any with the same issue.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Well, I was following the instructions as they were presented on the screen.  As I mentioned, things seemed to progress normally, the two computers seemed to be communicating but then the message that the MBP was not responding would pop up and I would be forced to quit the migration.
I had tried both FW 800 and ethernet connections to no avail.  After updating the iMac, I am running Mountain Lion on both machines and had consulted Pondini's guide prior to posting here.  I also opened up all the sharing options I could find on both computers thinking that would help. I'll take a closer look at Pondini's guide and see if that provides some answers.
Thanks.

  • Mail not responding after migration assistant to new mbp

I just got a new macbook pro, and migrated everything except applications via time machine from my old macbook (both with up-to-date snow leopard).
When i try to open Mail, it pops up saying it will import all my old mail - this completes and i press 'done' - however the main mail window pops up with an empty inbox and automatically i get the rainbow wheel which goes on indefinitely; more than an hour. I've tried several times and this is what happens, can't access anything.
How do i resolve this? is it best to delete all my mail first, open mail and then import from time machine? if so, how do i delete mail manually?

Not sure why this did not work. If you want to do over, then in the Finder remove the Mail folder at Home/Library/Mail, and the com.apple.mail.plist file at Home/Library/Preferences. Then copy those files from the time machine.

  • Host Not Responding and Needs Assistance

I have a VMM 2012 R2 Cluster based on two nodes.  Both nodes have similar hardware configuration.  When I move the VMM Cluster to Node 2, I face an issue of
Host Not Responding and Needs Assistance on almost all Hyper-V Host Servers.  But, When I move the Cluster to Node 1 off VMM, everything starts working and works undisturbed for days.  What could be different
between two hosts that can cause such a behavior that causes connection loss and thus the above error in the console.  How can I identify what is different in the first node from second node?

  • My Mac does not respond during login

    I am using OS 10.5.2
My iMac does not respond during login. After the desktop and dock are shown, the ball (cursor) keep rotating. I can do nothing except moving the cursor. All application including finder do not respond. Is there any solution?
    Thank you very much.

Hi. Try doing a safe boot. Press the Shift button while turning on the computer. If you encounter the same issue, boot from the install disk (insert the disk that came with your computer and boot your computer while holding the C key) and repair the disk and disk permissions. Hope this helps

  • I have Win 7 64bit and the computer "not responding" often.

The event logs show that Bonjour is the biggest problem in system failures and the computer Not Responding.  Is there a fix for Bonjour or is there a way to run itunes without it?
If itunes is not compatible for windows 7 Does apple have something else to use for media?

    Hello AEC396
It sounds like you are trying to burn a playlist to a disc in iTunes, but you are getting an errorabout missing drivers.  I found a couple of resources that I think might help with an error like this.
I recommend starting with the steps in this article:
iTunes for Windows: Optical drive is no longer recognized, or "Disc burner or software not found" alert after install
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2308
If you are still having trouble with burning a disc after following the steps in that article, I recommend following the steps in this article:

  • My time capsule mounts to Mac but is not displayed on Migration Assistant

My time capsule mounts to my Mac but is not displayed on Migration Assistant.
Very strange...there doesn't seem to be any issues with my Time Machine backup on time capsule, and I can easily access all files via Finder mounting the sparsebundle. However, when I try to fully restore the backup to my iMac, Migration Assistant cannot find any of the backups.
    Any idea why?
    Thanks!

Try preforming a factory reset and start over. This is explained at http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728

  • IPhoto Not Responding after Migration to new MacBook

    Gang,
I bought my wife a new White MacBook and I used the Migration Assistant to move her data from her old iBook. Everything went well except for iPhoto. When I opened it for the first time it started updating the photo library but it hangs at around 32 minutes remaining. In the activity monitor it goes red and says Not Responding. It has done this 4 time now even after reboots. Also, the photos did transfer over and can be seen in the Desktop/ScreenSaver Preference.
Any ideas how to get past this?
    TIA,
    James

    Gang,
I have deleted the iPhoto Library and replaced it several times but each time when I open iPhoto on the new MacBook it wants to update the library and then after about 3 minutes it will hang. In the Activity Monitor the process turns red and reads (not responding).
This has been going on for two days now and it is the only thing I can not get working on her new MacBook.
On the old iBook iPhoto works just fine.
    Any ideas???????
    TIA,
    James

  • Time Machine external drive not displayed in Migration Assistant

I have been suffering repeated lockups with my iMac, so I decided to bite the bullet and reformat the drive and restore from a Time Machine backup. I have been backing up to an external USB drive, not a Time Capsule. It seemed to be working fine and I have successfully restored the occasional file. However, having reinstalled Lion, the external drive was not offered as a possible source for restoration. Similarly, having chosen not to restore during reinstallation, I attempted to use the Migration Assistant: once again the external drive was not offered as a source. Luckily, I also had an up-to-date cloned drive that was offered and I managed a successful restore.
Can anyone explain why the external drive was not available as a legitimate source? Must I always use a Time Capsule for a full recovery?

    It seems that
in order for Mac OS X to realize that it's a Time Machine drive, there should be an invisible "flag file" (0 bytes in size) at the root of the drive, called com.apple.timemachine.supported - if this file is missing for some reason, Migration Assistant won't pick it up.
not sure that it's true but worth trying.

  • Computer not responding anymore when accessing shared files (systemd)

    Hi,
i upgraded my arch system which now uses systemd. An error appears when trying to access shared from vmware. It results in an no more responding arch Linux.
    Mounting is done via
    mount -t vmhgfs .host:/ /mnt/hgfs/
    which gives the note that
Could not add entry to mtab, continuing"
I could afterwards continue. When changing to the directory e.g. trying do list the files the computer stops responding.

  • Computer not responding to video invitation

I have just purchased an iSight, am on a wireless broadband connection, and the camera works fine for preview on iChat.
However when I am invited or invite another iChat user with iSight for video or audio chat, my screen says it is "starting" the video or audio chat, but then says my computer is not responding. The other iChat users are successfully using their iSight cameras to video chat with each other.
I've gone through all the troubleshooting tips.
Any suggestions for why my computer is not responding? Is there an email address or phone number where I can communicate directly with support for iSight?

Hello ilovemac. If BriarCroft does not respond, or if his response does not help you, does your iSight work with other apps? (How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional) If so, your problem is with iChat AV rather than with iSight.
If your iSight does not work, contact the retailer who sold your your new iMac regarding warranty coverage.
If your problem is not with your iSight, both parties to this (or any other troublesome) chat should test with more than one other user to determine which end of the connection is causing your symptoms. If you do not have enough available buddies for testing, you can find more Buddy Names for iChat Test here.
If you cannot solve the problem after you have identified the problem system(s?), I suggest you start your own thread in the appropriate iChat AV Discussions so your problem gets specific, individual attention that is not commingled with someone else's similar problem.
To get the best help, please post back as much as possible of the information requested in When do I Post a New iChat Topic? for the system that is having problems, starting about half way down the page.
By my count, the list requests 20 items of information. (You may even find the problem in the process of gathering that info.) Also post the actions you have already tried to avoid getting the same recommendations that you already know do not work.
If both of you have problems, provide the info for both systems in the same thread.

  • Backup will not restore with migration assistant.

This is long and complicated but here goes. Had a 10.5 machine PPC that was backing up to a time capsule. IMac blew out PS so was toast. Took it home and took another iMac 10.5 machine that had a bad HD. Put new HD into that machine and installed 10.6 and then ran migration assistandt from the old iMac HD drive from the unit with the bad PS. The restored iMac with the new HD was a perfect close of the older iMac and everything was perfect. Took to customer site and they were happy. Time machine started backing up again to the same time capsule as before. It created a new backup image on the time capsule with the EXACT SAME NAME as the older iMac had. I did not know that until a year later when the new hard drive in the rebuilt iMac failed. I took a newer iMac of the Intel variety with 10.7 on it to the customer site. I told migration assistant to restore from the time capsule users and data file. I di not want it to restgore programs since I knew the ones on the newer iMac where newer versions and probably not compatible. Restore seemed to go just fine. Users were all there and desktop looked the same as the older iMac with the dead hard drive. I had to install a printer driver but all appeared okay. Customer called the day later and said all files for pages and numbers and address book appeared a year old at the newest. See where this is going.
I went to the site and started looking at the backup files on the time capsule drive. Taht is when I noticed that two exact backup named files existed. So I started drilling down through them ( Not using time machine casues it only had 1 day history on it ) and looked at the dates of the files. Sure enough, one of the backup images had files that had all ended a year ago when the original iMac blew out the PS and the other backup file with an identical name had files much more current in the current month and year. Simple I said to myself. I just happended to pick the older file to restore from. So I renamed the older file so I could not get them confused. Double checked that the one with the current files was named correctly. Went to migration assistant again and ran it again. Completed just fine but sill no file less than a year old. NOw I am really puzzled so I tried a test of one simple file to see if I was wrong in my assumptions. The address book file was one of the files that was a year old. I went to the time caplsule and drilled down to the exact file that address book makes. I had already thrown the corresponding file away on the new machine so I copied the file from the exact same location on the time capslue back up to the same location on the new machine. I then fired up address book on the new machine and the address book worked perfectly with the new and updated and current records.
So now I am sure that the drive image that I have been playing with on the time capsule has the up to date backups.  But migtration assistant will not move them to the new machine. It will take a very long time to move every pages and numbers files scattered around in various folders to do this manually. What is wrong with migration assistant that it will not work correctly.

I am not asking if there is anything on the card.  I'm not worried about the backup or recovering all of my information.  I'm asking if setting up the replacement phone as NEW will change anything at all when I use the OLD sim card.

  • Illustrator CS5 not responding during rendering

    Hi,
I have a strange problem that I don't understand, maybe someone can help me?
I run Illustrator CS5 on a win7 64bits / i7 / 8 Go RAM / ATI Radeon HD 5470 and each time I want to apply a simple 3D effect (3D rotation), AI is freezing during the rendering... The aim is to do a disco ball by revolution of a half circle with a map art for the disco ball faces. Everything is OK until I try to change the disco ball perspective axis! Illustrator is not responding anymore and win7 ask me for closing the program.
I have already try different issues without success:
    - change the scratch disk
    - improve the performance : closing all running applications, simplify win7 display settings (disable aero,...), clean/defrag the disk, the register and memory, define a swap up to 24 Go
    - ramdisk dedicated to readyboost, scratch disk of AI and swap
It usually freezes after 50% progression, with the optimized performance it goes sometimes until 90%...
    Thank you in advance!

You simply have too many blend steps and it's running out of memory. Expand the "More" section to control that.
