Computer only shows apple screen then stops.

I recently just got the iMAC G4. I updated the programs that it told me to when it gives you the update box. After it only updated a few of them the computer froze. Now when I attempt to turn it on, it gets to the apple screen and thats it. It stops starting up & wont go past the apple screen.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try working through this article.
Could you provide some more details of which programmes you were updating and the specification of your iMac G4 (Go to Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info...). This will greatly help in assisting you.

  • Computer freezes at Apple screen, dial stops turning after accidentally turning off computer during Migration?

Accidentally turned off my Powermac G5 in the middle of a migration from my iMac G4 and now will turn on, but stops at apple screen, dial stops moving. HELP!

    Hello,
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • Imac boots to apple screen then stops?

Imac running osx Lion boots only to apple screen. I have tried boot discs and flash drive to boot it with no luck. HELP

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is damaged and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Boot into Recovery again. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
    Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a backup.
    Step 8
A dead logic-board battery in a Mac Pro can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
    Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

  • I have an ipod touch 2nd generation. I'm doing a restore and deleting it keeps showing apple screen then skull apple screen and it keeps doing it that for 12 hours not. How do i fix it to stop it

i have the 2nd generation ipod touch. i wanna to restore to factory settings but i couldnt do it through itunes. So i went in the settings to rest and delete. it keeps loading the apple screen and the apple turns to a skull and keeps repeating the screen for like 12 hours or more now. how do i fix it?

The skull indicates that the iPod is jailbroken
Jailbreaking voids the Apple warranty and also means that you will not get any support from Apple, including from this Apple forum. Jailbreaking can't be discussed in this Apple forum.

  • How to wake ipod from its funk?  only shows start screen then dies

MY ipod won't turn on, charge up, or show up on my G4 laptop or in itunes. I try resetting it, but as soon as the start screen comes up it dies. If I plug it in, it lights up brightly and shows the start screen, then won't do a darn thing but show the start screen. When I disconnect it, it still has no battery no matter how long it was plugged in. I have the latest updates in itunes and osx. What's the deal?
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks

If you have had your ipod for a long time or maybe even if it is new, you may need a new battery!
I recommend calling apple or maybe this link might help:

  • Iphone seems to be working but only shows apple logo, itunes sees the phone normally, when i restored it appeared successful and itunes tried activating my phone but the screen only shows apple logo nothing else???

my iphone is detected in itunes as normal, but screen on the phone only shows apple logo??? restored and everything but no difference its weird, it restores successfully and stuff but once done the screen only shows apple logo.. note:while restoring everything goes through as normal on the phone it shows the bar loading etc.. but once complete just stays on apple logo.

It can take a few minutes to reinitialize, but if it stays on the Apple logo for as much as 10 minutes there is something seriously wrong. Try restoring again, and set up as a new phone rather than installing your backup. If this fixes it you have a corrupt backup. If this doesn't fix it the phone is broken. Or possibly jailbroken.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your MacBook Pro has a startup issue that is causing it to only display an Apple logo. Try the suggestions in the article below, they will resolve most issues like this one.

  • IPod not recognized, Disk Mode doesn't help, iPod shows apple screen

LONG VERSION (SCROLL DOWN TO SKIP):
I added two movies (Garden State, Little Miss Sunshine) onto my iPod. I didn't add them to play, I only copy + pasted into iPod, since I was using the iPod as an external hard drive.
I go to my friend's house to add the movies to his computer, my friend says that my iPod got screwy when he plugged it in. It restarted and only showed the Apple logo. I unplugged my iPod, reset it, and it still wouldn't work. I plugged it in, and his screen says: USB Device malfunctioned, not recognized, etc. I plug it into several of his other computer's, all don't work.
I take it home, my computer shows the same message: USB Device not recognized because of malfunction.
This entire time, my iPod only shows the Apple logo screen, or the Please Wait, Very Low Battery screen.
I put it into disk mode and my computer still wouldn't recognize it.
    SHORT VERSION:
My iPod only shows Apple logo unless I put it into disk mode, and my computer won't recognize iPod either way.
I see the message: USB Device not recognized because of malfunction.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Source list, and then click Restore.
