Computer 'pauses' at startup

Hello. I recently reinstalled the macbook installation CD on my macbook due to a problem I was having. It fixed my problem, so I installed some updates from software update. [For some reason though, the most recent version of Mac OS X wouldn't intall]. I restarted my computer and now it wont startup. The pinwheel rotates continously and the apple logo stays. Also, there is no chime before the apple appears. I tried to use Quick Assist to fix this but it did not help. And I do not have room to reinstall my macbook installation CD.
Please help!
Thank you.

Hi,
I'm not sure of : "I do not have room to reinstall my macbook installation CD" from your post. Do you mean the Hard Drive is not showing up as an option?
IF the HD is not showing up, your HD might be failed, you must visit apple (hope you still in warranty or have apple care with you), and apple will replace the HD with the new one.
Good Luck.

  • Computer won't startup after Tiger install with Maxtor external drive

I just upgraded to Tiger on my G4 Dual 450. The computer will not startup with my Maxtor 200 MB external hard drive connected. When it is connected I get a message to restart my computer. The computer starts up and runs with no problems when the Maxtor is not connected. When I connect the Maxtor after the computer is started I get a gray screen to restart my computer. I can connect the Maxtor to another G4 in my office with no problems. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi, platteau1. Welcome to the Discussions.
You wrote: "When it is connected I get a message to restart my computer."You are describing the following message:
    That indicates a kernel panic.
    1. First, I suggest you contact Maxtor as there may be a problem with the external drive or it may require a firmware update.
    2. Next, see my "General FireWire troubleshooting" FAQ for advice that may help you troubleshoot the FireWire drive. It may be as simple as a bad FireWire cable or FireWire port on your Mac.
    3. Finally, see also my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.

  • How to pause before startup to debug??

Upon startup, does the debugger pause before it calls main of the application to allow the remote debugger to connect as a client????
If so, I just need to go find out what I am doing wrong with eclipse.
If not, how does one pause such that I can connect eclipse before the JVM calls main, as I want to step through the server startup????
Also, I see no output to the console in eclipse. Does stderr and stdout go over the remote debugging socket so clients can print the stuff to the console, or is this not allowed and so whenever I remote debug, I will never have logs in any debug client(ie. eclipse, JBorland, whatever)?????
    thanks,
    dean

ok, I answered my first question and the debugger does not pause on startup, so how do I make it pause without changing code. I mean, I could put a sleep in there, but that is hack for I don't know the answer.
How does eclipse or any IDE startup the JVM and attach it's debugger in time before main is called. They must do it somehow, so I know the problem must be solved in some way. Does anyone know????

  • Using Poweshell Add-Computer on Script startup

Is it possible to user Add-Computer in a Startup script in windows2008r2?
The script works after the computer has been boot, however when we added into the startup script it fails.
Any other way to do this on startup

Let me explain a little bit more the question, I know I wasn't clear.
I have a EC2 AMI (Amazon Image) which has things preinstalled. Windows instances are created using the image.
As part of the image we have some startup script that perform tasks given the instance. As part of this initial setup we want the instance "auto" register to the AD server.
Using a powershell script we able to detect whether the instance is part of the domain, if not we added to the domain using Add-Computer. This means that only when the instance is created the script will register to AD, otherwise it will ignore the command.
A snipped of the script is:
    if ((gwmi win32_computersystem).partofdomain -eq $true) {
//DO other things since it is already joined
          }else{
            $username = 'user';
            $domain = 'domain.com';
            $password = 'pass';
            $credential = (New-Object System.Management.Automation.PSCredential ($username, (ConvertTo-SecureString $password -AsPlainText -Force)))
            add-computer -domain $domain -credential $credential -OUPath '#{node["ad"]["ou_string"]}'
The script is not the issue. The question is when/where to run the script on startup?
    Any suggestions?

Computer will not startup or use the system recovery.

Could you be a bit more specific about what it does/does not do? For instance-does it power up at all? Does it power up but stops at HP logo screen, or ??

  • Windows 10 Hard Disk Pausing on Startup

Hi  I upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 10 Home yesterday using Windows Update. Now I notice that whenever I start up the computer, the hard disk pauses for 10 seconds during startup. I have deleted the old Windows 7 installation using Disk Cleanup. I have also unchecked "Time to display list of operating systems" and "Time to display list of recovery options". These settings can be found in "This PC" (right click)->Properties->Advanced System Settings->Advanced->Startup and Recovery. I also want to know whether it is safe to delete the recovery and hp_tools partitions and extend c: as I suspect that the pause is due to its presence. Thanks in advance for your reply. VS

I never found a solution. I think the motherboard was fried. It wouldn't recognize any hard drive, or even the os I had installed on a flash drive, all of which worked in other places. Good luck.

  • Computer beeps on startup; no other response

Starts but just emits a pattern af beep tones (one short, one long, then a pause) then repeats. Monitor displays message "no input signal". Tried unplugging from power sugre strip and plugging directly into wall outlet - same result. Cheched cables and connections. Computer was left on overnight and this started around 1:30am. No storms in area, just bitter cold.

    Hi,
This BIOS error code points to memory errors. Please see this HP Support document.
You could try reseating the memory modules. If this fails you may have a bad memory module.

  • Computer wont recognize startup disk..

My I mac just started getting wonky. On Re-start, it would not recognize start up disk. Re started using Install disk, went to disk utilities to run repair and the hard drive was not even listed in the menu. Looked ar re-installing sysrem, but no hard drive was available to install to. After a few more attempts, hard drive became available, ran disk repair, said everything was fine, repaired permisions, selected my startup disk and restarted.. Nothing. Blinking folder. Tried restart again, this time got spinning wheel on grey mac screen.. Computer seemes to be hot.
Left it over night and it started up fine in the morning. Any help would be appreciated. Should I re-install system? Or has my drive gone bad?
    thanks

Reinstalling the operating system does not look like the answer, more likely a hardware fault.  If you have important material on the hard drive, this would be an excellent time to get an external drive and backup the material.  Even better, use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, both free downloads, to make a bootable clone of the system on the external drive.  Then you could start from that drive if the internal drive is failing.
Have you run the hardware diagnostic tests?  That might not be a bad idea...see if anything is identified as going bad.

  • Computer does not startup after canceled software update

I was installing the newest version of leopard. It seems as though leopard installs the update while the computer is starting up (?), as opposed to tiger, which downloaded the update while the computer was still on.
anyway, i was feeling impatient and decided that the update was taking to slowly and that i should just cancel it and update it later.
however i made the stupid decision of forcing my computer to turn off (by holding down the power button)
now whenever i try to turn on the computer, it will get to the screen with the apple and the rotating circle-thing below it
however, it won't get past that part, i left the computer for an hour and when i got back, it was on the same startup screen
i'd appreciate any help anyone can give me

You damaged your OS when you did a force-quit.
Restart your machine with your original Leopard disk in the drive while holding down the "C" key until you see the Apple.
Then you can re-install your OS. You should back up your data to an external hard drive by doing an "archive and install" which is one of the options you will have when you begin.
If you don't have a hard drive, you can just re-install the OS and then update again.
Installing with first backing up is not recommended since there is always the possibility of some problem installing new software that could result in data loss.
If you are going from Leopard 10.5 up to 10.5.2, use Apple's combo updater which should appear in Software Update.

  • Long pause before startup

    Hello,
Sometimes my intel mac mini pause longer than usual before startup chime is heard. I ran hardware diagnostics (extended one) and no problem was reported. Could it be a hard drive related issue?
    Thanks inadvance.

I have a similar thing to this, it doesn’t happen very often, but I’m always a little bit worried it’ll get worse, or it’s a symptom of something else,
basically every now and then I get that 5second pause before the chime, I haven’t run any diagnostics yet (all my disks are up north at the moment, I’m going to get them back soon, might see if they show anything)

  • ITunes 7.5.20 - really long pause on startup

After "upgrade" to 7.5.20, iTunes appears to hang for a long time on startup (many minutes) during which the CPU is near 100%, the rest of the system is locked up, and the "Search" window is not fully painted (showing desktop under iTunes). Performance Monitor says iTunes is "unresponsive". After a long while (many minutes), iTunes magically wakes up and completes its load, and appears to function normally. Uninstall/reinstall with fresh download behaves the same. Any ideas about this?

We are having the same problem on the Mac platform.
There are a number of threads sleuthing through the issue, and based on the Mac build of iTunes 7.5 (build 19), I have been able to ascertain the following:
    1) The long time to start up is due to iTunes rummaging through the music files on your hard disk. The more 'songs' in your iTunes Library, the longer it takes iTunes to startup. Since the time is based on file reads from the hard disk, this action is sensitive to where you keep you Library (ie. Local HD/Attached HD/Networked Volume/Wireless, etc.)
    2) I have been able to isolate the issue from any dependency on computer model, etc.
    3) There appears to be a dependency with the file type used. For example, I have two identical Libraries, one taken as plain vanilla .aif (wav) files from CD, and the second a mirror Library of .mp3 files. The only difference between the two Libraries is the manner in which they were created: one is a mirror of the other, rather than a straight rip. iTunes starts instantaneously on the .mp3 Library, but takes a full 9 minutes on the .aif Library, all else kept the same.
    4) There may be a dependency related to Album Art, but I have not been able to completely nail this one yet. (.aif files have no tags, and Album art is stored externally to the sound file whereas .mp3 files can accommodate embedded sound file tags.)
    Help out:
    1) How many songs does your Library have? How many albums? How large is the collection in GB?
    2) What file type is prominent in your collection? Direct .aif (wav) or .mp3s?
    3) What % of your music has Album Art? Where did you get your Album Art (automatic/scanned/etc.)?

  • GTX 750/HP G5410sc, computer does not startup

    Hi!
Just installed the GTX750 to my HP but at startup computer hangs at the HP startup screen, then computer just  beeps and in couple minutes screen goes blank.
    Any ideas?

Look at the label on the PSU, how many amps does it show for +12V. PC with GTX 750 requires minimum of +12V~20A 400W PSU. Your PC shows as having a 300W PSU so it probably has less than 20A for +12V.
1st thing to do is test with more powerful PSU as was previously alluded to by Nichrome and as he also said it could need a BIOS update to support the new graphics card which you would need to go to HP and ask them about that.
It's a Foxxcon H61 Express chipset MB in that PC.

  • Starting up using another computer as a startup disk.

Hello oh knowledgeable ones. My hard drive is MIA (flashing question mark folder) and I would like to use my old iMac as a startup disk (via firewire) (I have tried starting up off of CD and I am never able to get the machine started up so I can run a disk utility.) When we had a similar problem 2 weeks ago we took the beast to the genius bar and they got it started up off a firewire start-up - but I cannot startup off of my old mac.

  • Disk Utility won't repair the disk.  Now the computer won't startup.

Had been having a few problems with my G5 iMac so I restarted with the Leopard disk and attempted a repair with disk utility. The repair came to a halt with a message indicating that the repair couldn't continue. After that, the repair buttons were no longer highlighted, only the verify buttons were highlighted. I attempted to restart the computer from the internal drive, but now it only gets to the point of the Apple logo appearing and then it shuts down. I even attempted to reinstall Leopard, but the only option that is highlighted would erase all data from the drive. I ran a hardware test and it showed no problems. I have tried Disk Warrior and Drive Genius 2. The computer will boot from the disks, but repairs cannot be made. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I don't know if this will change the ultimate prognosis, but when I use Disk Utility in an attempt to repair the disk, I get the following message:
    Invalid B-tree node size
    Volume check failed.
