Computer printer connection in University environment with campus wide wifi

My daughter just went off to college.  The campus provides free wifi. Since it is a campus wide network the printer cannot connect to the network.  We tried wireless direct, but that was problematic when she had to print things professors posted on their website as you have to disconnect from the school network to connect to wireless direct and the switch was not as seemless as one would like and sometimes it would take up to 3 minutes to print a page - not sure if the laptop was trying to reconnect to the main network or what was  going on.  So she tried ethernet, but then she had to  disconnect the ethernet cable if she wanted to get back on the campus network otherwise it kept showing it was connected to the campus network but  had limited access.   So before she invests in a long USB - would that even solve the issue? Or,is there some configuration we are missing on the Pavillion and/or HP that would allow connection to the internet wirelessly while the printer is connected to the laptop?  Unfortunately her computer does not seem to have bluetooth capabilities or I would have switched out the printer for one with bluetooth. I have to think there is some way to configure this that we are just missing. Any insight would be appreciated.

Doesn't the printer have to have access to the internet in order to use eprint?  That is the whole problem, the printer is not allowed access to the internet through the University wifi system.  They system will not allow it.  Te printer shows an error message and when I contacted HP tech support they said there was no way around it and showed me how to do direct connect.   So itt either needs to be wifi direct or hard wired.  Wifi direct connect means switching back and forth between networks and makes it very difficult to print anything off of the web.  What I want to know is if there is a way to connect the printer directly through USB or ethernet and still have the computer connect wifi with the university network.  Or does anytime you connect the printer does the computer think that is a network?  We tried ethernet and the computer shows limited access to the internet whenever it is connected.  I am assuming that is because it is trying to connect to a network through the ethernet. I am thinking USB might be better.  However, if it would make no difference we will live with this workaround.  Or are there settings on the laptop and/or printer that would solve the problem another way.

Even if it was compatible, AirPrint does not work through a USB link, only Ethernet or WiFi.
I do not see your HP 4500 listed on Apple's list of AirPrint compatible printers.  <iOS: AirPrint 101>  Therefore you need to take another approach.  To start, I suggest you download the free HP App, ePrint Home & Biz.  It has limitations, but should get you printing with your existing setup.
There are other printing Apps with more features such as Print n Share and PrintCentral, but they can only be accessed from within other Apps that have the "Open In" option.
Your best option may be to share your computer's printer as AirPrint over WiFi.  Programs that are reported to do that well are Printopia and FingerPrint.  Your computer must be on and awake any time you want to print.  <Printopia for Macintosh>  <FingerPrint for PC and Mac>

    Hi,
That was already done, that's the first thing I've done but the same error occurs. No matter the CUID of my universe I still get this error.
I still try to find an answer on forums or sap notes but at the moment, nothing.

  • Siri is not able to connect to the internet with or without wifi. Anyone know why?

Is anyone else having trouble with Siri today?

When siri gives you that message, it means the servers are either down or busy. It doesn't necessarily mean YOU aren't connected to the network. Siri is still in beta and apple is continuously working to improve it. So occaisonal problems such as these are common.

  • How to edit Printer Connections in GPO created through Print Management's "Deploy with Group Policy"

    Hi there,
I have used the right-click "Deploy with Group Policy" in Print Management on Windows Server 2012 to deploy a printer connection to a GPO.
When you look at the GPO Settings, the Printer Connection is visible under User Configuration -> Policies -> Windows Settings -> Printer Connections -> Path: \ \ printserver\PrinterName.
However, I cannot edit or delete that Printer Connection Path, which would be necessary if I had to rename or delete the printer referenced.  If you Edit the GPO, "Printer Connections" is not available under Windows
Settings, only Scripts, Security Settings, Folder Redirection, and Policy-based QoS.
Is there a way to edit the GPO's Printer Connections that are created with "Deploy with Group Policy"?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
How do you want to edit the printer connection? Do you want to edit the path of printer connection?
Based on my test, we can’t edit the printer connection directly in GPO. We can edit the path of printer connection in printer management.
For detail steps, we can refer to the method Miles Zhang provided in the following link:
    Where is "Printer Connections set"?

  • Set up printer connected to Time Capsule via USB and print without WiFi

Is there any way to do this? We use a Time Capsule for daily backups, for both Mac and PCs, and have a printer that we would like to share between all of them. Before, we had the printer connected to a PC as this allowed both PCs and Macs to print to it, but of course the PC had to be on. For whatever reason, when we plugged the printer into a Mac, the PCs couldn't connect or print.
From what Apple has told me, I have two options:
    1. Share the printer via WAN, which is not desirable, as any other office could then print to our printer.
    2. Create a hidden, password-protected, wireless network. This causes problems for two reasons. Firstly, we are not permitted to "extend" the network, and by creating a wireless network and attaching it onto the ethernet network, we are basically doing that. Secondly, if we did create this wireless network, computers that connected to the network to be able to see the printer would then default to the wireless network for internet access, rather than the ethernet connection.
If I am misunderstanding something, or someone has an idea of how to password protect a printer connected to a Time Capsule without using wifi, I would greatly appreciate it.

Sharing via WAN through the Time Capsule, for whatever reason, is not password protected. Any computer in our building can see the printer, and use it. When we were sharing the printer through the PC / Bonjour, when setting up the printer on a new machine, a valid username and password from the connected PC was required.
I should add that the purpose of trying to share this via the Time Capsule, rather than the PC, is that the Time Capsule is always on, and we notice an increase in performance when the PCs are powered down regularly.

    Hello,
When I connect my iPad 1 with a wide screen TV using the apple VGA connector, there's no display on the TV.
But when I do the same thing from iPad 2, the iPad screen is projected on TV.

Sounds like the one common thing is the adapter. The cheaper, non apple branded ones tend to fail.
Try another adaptor before worrying about your ipad.

  • You do not have sufficient access to your computer to connect to the selected printer

    Environment
    Print server: Windows 2008 R2 SP1
Clients: Windows XP SP3 + GPP
    Drivers:
    HP UPD PCL6 5.3.1.10527
    Intermec 7.2.2
    Ricoh UPD PS 3.9.0.0
    Xerox UPD PS 5.216.12
    Zebra 2.6.42.03
GPO Configuration - enables users to add printers/drivers from the print servers.
    Background
For the last year, we've had the 2008R2 print server set up and the clients have not had any problems connecting to the print server to add printers.
    Issue
Over the past ~3 weeks, we've gotten spurious reports from users stating they're unable to add a printer. The specific error displayed is:
You do not have sufficient access to your computer to connect to the selected printer.
It occurs for multiple vendors, so it's not a print driver specific issue.  I've personally witnessed the problem where (using a User's account) I was unable to add Printer X out of a list of 10 random printers.  2 minutes later, still logged on
as the same user, I was then able to add Printer X which doesn't make any sense since nothing had changed.
Another user logging into the same workstation will not have any problems adding the same problematic printer.  The user who had the problem can log onto a different workstation and add the same printer with no problems, so it's not a User permission
    issue either.
Most of the time running gpupdate /force and/or rebooting the box will also 'solve' the problem.
Running the group policy results wizard on a few random workstations (which have exhibited this problem in the past), shows everything appears to be properly configured/enabled related to GPOs, including the
Prevent users from installing printer drivers setting per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/259937
Has anyone else ran into this problem lately?
How does one troubleshoot this issue since I can't faithfully reproduce it on demand since it appears to resolve itself after a period of time?

Haven't found the smoking gun to this problem, but I am getting closer.
Troubleshooted another PC today which was exhibiting this problem for another user. Logged onto the PC with my User account and sure enough, received the same message for the same printer.   Fired up Sysinternals Process Monitor, but nothing useful
was captured when receiving the failure message.  There was also another Point and Print printer which was present on the workstation (i.e.
PrinterName on PrintServerName) for my User account which stated "printer cannot be removed. Access is Denied" when I tried to delete it.  Odd. Getting properties on the printer would bring up the correct info from the print server
though, so it was valid and appeared functional.
    I tried running the new
MS FixIT printing tool, but it failed in full mode with an admin account.
Next, I searched through the registry for this printername which I was unable to delete. Eventually it was found at:
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Providers\LanMan Print Services\Servers\PRINTSERVERNAME\Printers\PRINTERNAME
On a hunch, I deleted the entire PrinterName key, restarted the print spooler, and then was able to add the printer with no permission errors!  There were several more printers listed in this registry key. I tried the same steps again:
    validate receiving 'sufficient access' error.
    purge printer's registry key
    restart spooler
Able to add the same printer via point and print.
This solved the problem on half of the printers. The others added with no errors.  The printer drivers in question are from both HP and Xerox, so I doubt it's a vendor specific issue and instead Windows (unsure if XP or 2008 though).
It would appear that Windows caches the information about the printer/driver/settings/etc from the print server in CurrentVersion\Print\Providers\LanMan Print Services\Servers\PRINTSERVERNAME\Printers\PRINTERNAME ?  Why does it need to be duplicated
    in both HKLM and HKCU?
Separate PC, further exploring this printer issue and the contents of the \LanMan Print Services\Servers\PRINTSERVERNAME\Printers\ keys.  On this PC, I successfully ran the MS FixIt for Printing tool in Full mode and rebooted.  After reboot, the
System Event logged the following for multiple printers -- which should've been deleted --
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Print
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 23
    Date: 4/9/2012
    Time: 5:11:48 PM

    User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
    Computer: U-xxxxx
    Description:
Printer UH-xxxxxx failed to initialize because a suitable HP Universal Printing PCL 6 (v5.3) driver could not be found.
Yet a minute later, the updated driver was automatically installed via P&P:
    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: Print
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 20
    Date: 4/9/2012
    Time: 5:12:22 PM

    Computer: U-xxxx
    Description:
Printer Driver HP Universal Printing PCL 6 (v5.4) for Windows NT x86 Version-3 was added or updated. Files: <snip>
Sure enough, after checking the \LanMan Print Services\Servers\PRINTSERVERNAME\Printers\ keys, all of those printers which logged EventID 23 were still present!  This time, I manually deleted the entire \LanMan Print Services\Servers\PRINTSERVERNAME\Printers\
subkeys, rebooted the PC, logged on, and those errors did not repeat.
Something strange is definitely going on with the printing subsystem on XP lately...

  • How to force Tiger to print doc within Classic environment, not with OSX?

I want to print certain documents using OS9's printing utility within the Classic environment, and NOT using Tiger's standard OSX printing method. How?
I know it is possible because I have two Macs connected to the same printer, and it works on one and not the other. I can't figure out why.
    Here are the specifics:
I have a printer, the Ricoh Laser AP2600. Connected to it are two computers:
    a PowerBook G4 running 10.4.7, and
    an iMac running 10.3.9.
When I print documents from OSX applications, the two computers take the exact same time to print. HOWEVER, when I print from Classic applications, the iMac running 10.3.9 prints very quickly, but the PB running 10.4.7 takes two to three times as long. That's because the iMac prints the document using the old OS9 "Print Monitor" printing utility, and never passes the printing back to Tiger. Whenever I try to print a document from a Classic application on the PB, however, it passes the printing to the standard OSX printing method, which (for some reason) is much slower.
(Sorry if I'm not using the right terminology.)
I checked and double-checked, and as far as I can tell, all the "printer descriptions" and "drivers" and everything else is absolutely identical in both System 9 "Extension" folders on both computers. I installed the exact same Ricoh print-driver packages for OSX and Classic on both machines identically. So -- why does one print quickly within Classic, and the other pass the printing job back to slow OSX?
The specific application that causes this discrepancy is MSWord 5.1a, a very old version that only works under Classic. (I use it a lot because I prefer it to more recent versions of MSWord.)
A secondary, but related, question: Why does printing documents from within the Classic environment go so much more quickly than in OSX? It seems to be one of the few aspects of OSX that's worse than OS9.
So -- how can I make my PB behave like my iMac? Is there some difference between 10.3.9 and 10.4.7 that causes this different behavior? Any hints or suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Thanks.

OK, I have finally solved the problem -- mostly.
The trick was to click on the Chooser option called "PSPrinter" -- not LaserWriter 8 or any of the others. I took a chance on that since I knew that the Ricoh 2600 was a PostScript printer. When I clicked on it, and chose "Set up printer," I was able to set up the Ricoh driver. Then, when I tried printing, it worked -- it printed within the Classic environment, not in Tiger. And what a difference!! Under Tiger, a simple page of text takes 45 seconds to process and print. Under Classic, the exact same page processes and prints in 8 seconds! A huge difference. So, I finally got it to work.
The downside is that I can't get it to "stick." If I restart Classic (or the entire computer), the next time I go back to print in MSWord 5.1a (my Classic application), it will have reverted back to the Tiger method of printing. So, the first time I print a page in 5.1a during any session, I have to go to Chooser and select PSPrinter. This adds 15 seconds or so to the process, so printing a single page overall isn't any faster, if you add up all the steps. Subsequent prints all are done quickly in Classic automatically, as long as Classic hasn't restarted. (I can even quit the application and restart it without a problem -- only an OS restart causes it to revert back to Tiger printing.)
So, my basic problem is solved, and I'm fairly satisfied. But I still have two nagging issues that I wouldn't mind answered if anybody knows the answers:
How can I make my Chooser printer selection in Classic "stick" permanently from one restart to the next? Why does it revert to Tiger printing after a restart?
And the fundamental question: why is Classic printing so much faster than Tiger printing? I thought Tiger was supposed to be a "digital hub" that made communicating with peripherals so easy? In most ways it is, but why is printing the one way in which OSX is WORSE than OS9, at least in regards to speed?

  • Printing to a printer connected to a Windows computer on a wireless network

In my home I have a DSL internet connection, a Linksys router, one wired Windows computer to the router, and one wireless Mac and one wireless PC. In this configuration, the printer is connected to the wired Windows PC. How can I print directly from my iMac to the printer connected there?
-- Before purchasing the iMac I had a Windows based Laptop that was able to print this way (I would have the wired computer and printer turned on, and then press print on the laptop, and it would come out of that printer). How can I duplicate this for the iMac? Thanks!

No, the problem wasn't ever solved. So I compromised and finally hooked up the free printer that came with my Mac. Although I wasn't able to share a printer, I was able to access files and print them kind of the hard way by enabling windows sharing under Sys Prefs > Sharing > Windows Sharing. And then you need to click on accounts and enter your password. Then use the key that the Mac gives you (Should be something like \\192.168.1.1##\shortname) and then on your PC, go to "My Network Places" and click on "Set up a network place." When prompted choose to enter the location yourself and enter the number address given on the Mac. After that a box should pop up asking you for your name and password (which is that of the Mac) and then you should be able to access all of the files that are on your Mac from your PC and print directly that way. Hope that helped someone. And if anyone can still help me print wirelessly, please do!

  • HP PHOTOSMART 5524 SERIES PRINTER WILL NOT CONNECT WIRELESSLY/COMMUNICATE WITH LAPTOP. PLEASE HELP.

I am really hoping that someone can help me resolve a serious issue with a new printer.
I have tried every diagnostic tool including the HP print & scan doctor and my printer still doesn't seem to connect to my laptop or print.
Although it does print test pages and reports and it also prints directly from my Android phone.
I purchased the printer from ebay and the printer installtion/driver disc was not included. The printer connected to my Sky network immediately, the blue light/dot was solid and it stated on the printer's display 'Connected - and the IP address/MAC details etc'..........
However, when I try to print from my laptop, it won't print - no error message, nothing so I can't figure out what the problem is.
I went to the HP website and d/loaded the driver for my operating system [Windows Vista 32 bit] and when that failed I tried the Basic HP printer driver and that failed also. I then un-installed and reinstalled the drivers & associated software again and also tried the 'add printer wizard' in Windows.
As a last resort, I disabled my firewall and anti-virus software [temporarily] to ensure that was not preventing my laptop from recognising the printer still no joy!
I have tried every workaround I can think of [and I am not particularly computer proficient] and I am truly out of options and ideas of how to get this to work. When I have finished installting the drivers sometimes a dialoge box pops up on the bottom right hand corner [where the icons are] saying 'HP Photosmart ready to use' but I go to print a document either microsoft word or directly from the internet and it still will not print.
This is getting extremely frustrating and annoying. I have spent hour upon hour trying everything I can think of, but it still won't work.
Please help find a solution. Thank you.

    Hello flammingstar,
Thank you for the information. At this point because the print will print from your Android phone, scans, and copies. This shows that the printer itself is not the issue.
The error messages 0x0000643 and 0x0000057, when do you get these errors? Are they on the printer, or the computer?
I would suggest trying to stop, and start the printer spooler. Please follow the steps below.
    1. Click Start
    2. Type "services" (without quotes) in the search field
    3. Open Services
    4. At bottom of the page click "Extended View"
    5. Click in a service in the list,
    6. Press the letter "P" on your keyboard
    7. Search for Print Spooler
    8. Right-click on it, and choose Properties
    9. Select Automatic in the drop down box
    10. In that Properties window you will see buttons for Start, and Stop, please click on Stop, and then click on Start.
Try printing again from your computer. Are you able to print a full page?
    Looking forward to your response.
