Computer randomly shut off, won't turn back on

Ok so a basic run down of what happened.
I was using my email (I had itunes, transmission, ichat, safari running) and my computer (purchased december of last year) turned off. I waited 5 minutes wondering what happened, thought the outlet might be faulty or something, unplugged and plugged it into the outlet above it.
Pressed the power button, turned on, worked fine.
For three hours. Then it did it again, surfing safari; same programs running. Unplugged it, thinking it blew out or something (I live in an older house). Plugged it in to another outlet 3 feet away. Turned on, worked fine - Continued on my merry way.
3-5 Hours later, same deal. Only this time, I'd run out of nearby outlets. Double checking, and a bit confused I tried plugging something else into the outlet and... It works. Retried plugging in the computer... It doesn't work. It does however make the disc-sound when I press the power button. Nothing afterwards.
The only trouble I've had thus far is with Boot Camp/Vista. I had Vista installed via Boot Camp and it worked fine but no longer needing it, I unistalled the partition. Upon restarting the computer I go straight to a black screen that tells me to insert the windows disc, but that could be avoided by using option on start up.
I appreciate any help or advice offered, I'm calling apple right after this is posted and I realize I will likely have to take it in to a store.
Worth a shot though, just in case.

The problem you describe is reportedly caused by a bad power supply, in which case you will need to have it repaired. You should contact AppleCare or take it to an Apple Store.

  • IPhone randomly shuts off and wont turn back on again.

    Hi,
I have a problem with my iPhone 4. It randomly shuts off and wont turn on again until i plug in the charger. This happens at least once a day and is extremly annoying and i can´t really use it anymore. I´ve tried a reset but with no results. Please help me out, thanks

    Hello again,
I know there been a while, but I just need to tell you this
I tried a restore and it didn´t work out. The same problem just continued and i started using and old phone instead. A couple of days ago I read something about ios6, and I thought: Why not try it on my iPhone that I don´t use? I installed ios6 and since then the phone have worked perfectly, except for one single hangup but then it was just to restart it. Ios6 beta 2 is actully really stable. I mean, now at least it´s a fully functional phone.

  • IMac Shut Off - Won't Turn Back On (Fully)

So, last night I was using my last-iteration iMac and it randomly shut off. I tried to power it back on... and it wouldn't. I then felt the back of the case and it was very hot. I figured it was an overheating issue, but now it won't turn back on. When I hold down the power button, it begins to start up and I can hear it "clicking" then it shuts down. It restarts itself, and I can hear a very low hum. Something is running inside of it, and the disc drive will spin if I put a disc in, but it's not turning on fully. I tried several different troubleshooting techniques with the main problem being nothing will appear on the monitor so a few of them are out of reach. I also tried booting to the boot disc and, again, nothing will appear on the screen. I did the one power reset which caused my fans to blow loudly and I had to, again, fix that, but... yeah. It starts up, shuts itself off, starts back up and something works but I can't tell what is whirring in there. The computer is only about six months old, but I didn't take out the Apple Care so I'm extremely frustrated, as it is well-cared for and this issue seems extremely random. Thanks in advance to anyone that can provide help.

    Hi Jonathan
Your iMac is warranteed for the first year so you are covered. Applecare extends that to three years but in your case you didn't need to buy it to cover this issue. Call apple and make an appointment to bring it in.

  • My iPhone 4 shuts off, won't turn back on until connected to computer.

The phone is fully charged but won't turn on despite holding the home and top button for up to 30 seconds.
This started yesterday, where I noticed that the phone would shut off at 70% battery and not turn back on. I connected it to my computer and the Apple logo pops up, and after a few seconds (sometimes a few minutes) it goes back to the normal home screen.
So I completely reset the phone to factory settings and the phone seemed to be fine for an hour, to an hour and a half, until I stopped using it. I looked at the phone maybe 10 minutes later, and it was back to being dead again.
I charged it fully overnight again, and when I unplugged the phone and walked away briefly and came back, it was off again.
Any ideas, beside trying to reset it again? The battery life has been bad lately, so I was thinking of buying a new battery anyway, but if its not just a battery issue, then its not worth buying the battery.
    Thanks.

    More info:
I plugged it in again earlier today after coming across the same problem and it briefly flashed the "no power" symbol before rolling over to the Apple logo and starting up to 100%. So I would guess its battery-related?

  • My iPhone 4 just randomly shut off and wont turn back on

i was in class and got a text that i ignored. during the class, i got 2 or 3 more vibrations, notifications or new texts, i dont know.
once class was over, i decided to check my texts, however, my phone wouldn't turn on.
i tried holding the power button for a tad, thinking it might've shut off on its own, knowing it was pretty much full charge, maybe at about 91% battery life.
i know the phone shuts off at around 3% to conserve memory, and when this happens it shows you a red empty battery image when you try to turn it and then shuts off again. this did not happen so im pretty sure it's not the battery. i thought perhaps it had overheated so i waited a few hours. it's been around 9 hours, i don't think it overheated. i plugged it in the charger, that didnt do anything. i waited half an hour as i know when the battery is really low, it doesnt turn on right away when you plug it in. nothing happens i can't seem to get it to work. my computer doesn't recconize it either.
i have tried all combinations of buttons. i've held the power button, i've held the home button for 10 sec, i've held both, i tried putting it in DFU mode but NOTHING is working. im seriously panicking because i am no longer in warranty and it really ***** that it just broke like that while i was doing nothing...
if anyone can please help me get this baby running again, ill much appreciate it

Hold the Main Screen Button for a few seconds, then press the top button. My iPhone4s does this, I havent really found a solution on why it does this. But I found the solution to turn it back on, Holding the Main Screen Button for a few seconds then pressing the top button worked for me. If I find out why it does this and how to fix it, ill be back to repost.

  • My iPad just shut off won't turn back on;(

Help! My iPad just shut off wont charge or come back on?  Whhaaaaa

Could be the charger, cable or iPad. Plug the USB cable into your computer. It may say "Not Charging", however, it is charging slowly and will verify that the cable is good.
Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • My ipod randomly shut off and wont turn back on

My ipod touch shut off last night while i was charging it and it wont turn back on

Please tell me that it has NEVER been jailbroke.  If it has never been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures:
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

  • Randomly shut off and wont turn back on!!

My ipod is only 7 months old. I was just using it and it rendomly shut off. The battery was full. I plugged it in just to see and it wouldnt even charge.
    HELP!!

Try rebooting the device by pressing and holding the on/off and home buttons simultaneously until you see the apple logo. If it resets the ipod it should take about 10-15 seconds to reboot.

  • HT1430 iPhone randomly shut off, won't turn on even when charged?

So my phone was about 30% and it died when I was using it. My iPhone has a stuck sleep/wake button, so I can't reset it normally. I've had it plugged in overnight with my charger (which DOES work), but the screen is still black. Is there any way to fix this? :/ I currently have it plugged into my Macbook, but iTunes won't recognize the phone.

ONly way is to do a reset.  hold down the home/sleep button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.
You'l just to have to keep trying until it works.

  • Machine randomly shuts off and then comes back on.

Hello! Basically whats happening is my computer randomly shuts off (No blue screen just powers off) and then immediately comes back on.
I am running three monitors and a single GPU.  This has happened in two different cities (I moved) I have the same surge protector - however, other things on the protector do not reset / go off (alarm clock no battery).
Here are the crash dumps that microsoft said happened. (I uploaded three different ones)
    http://www.mediafire.com/download/juwuzck8wpq6j0r/issues.rar
I'm a pretty avid builder but I'm a bit stumped with this issue. The machine will, at random, shut off completely (including lights) and then come back on, during normal activities and gameplay.
The temps do not appear to be reaching astronomic levels, maxing out at around 60-65c (cpu) and 45c for the GPU.
    Parts:
    cpu - i7 3960x (turbo enabled normal at 3.3, w/ turbo at 3.9ghz)
mobo -  MSI X79A-GD45 /// Intel DX79SI (have tried both, it still happens with either, MSI is a new board.
psu - 750 Antec Gold High Current Pro
gpu - MSI Lightning 680 (no OC)
    sdd - samsung 840 pro
    hdd - Black 1TB
    case - HAF 942-x
    cooler - x40 kraken
    ram - G.SKILL Ripjaws Z Series 32GB (DDR1600)
    Here's what I tried
    1. Bought a new motherboard (MSI $260) to see if the issue would go away. - Failed.
    2. Was able to reproduce the issue VERY quickly when using the OC Genie2 on the MSI board, with teh button pressed, I could boot up OCCT and have it reproduce the issue with the power-off in around 2 minutes of the test. - Failed
    3. Attempted PSU and GPU stress test with stock BIOS, tests ran 1 hr+ each with no issues.  Shut down my machine and restarted it this morning and the issue came back within 5 minutes of use just sitting at the Windows Desktop. - Failed.
    4. Turned the 32 GB of ram to 1600 and enabled XMP, crashed after 3-5 days.
    5. Attempting to test each DIMM individually.
    6. Issue happened again after about two weeks of not happening.
I've run OCCT for an hour with the "stock" bios and it didn't crash for an entire hour.  I've also attempted to use the "OC genie2" overclock function and that triggered a crash within 2 minutes of the run.
Can anyone give me some more things to try? I'm thinking its possible it could be the PSU, but after running OCCT PSU test for 30+ minutes it had no issues.

& it keeps trying to turn on but it wont . like the apple logo pops up for a minute , then turns off.

Had exact same problem. Rang Apple support and various apple repairers. All of them said in effect, too bad, you'll have to lose everything since your last backup. It's a work phone with very important stuff on it and the latest backup was on a computer that had a virus. Convergence of crap :/
Happened to talk to a friend who said to try replacing the battery. Did that. Problem fixed. All data saved.
To all Apple support people: rather than say 'once it's in recovery mode you lose all data' try saying 'replace your battery and see if that works first'!!!!

My macbook shut off and wont turn back on. Im pretty sure it is charging. The LED light is on but only when the laptop is closed. Im in grad school and have lots saved. Please Help!

    ronicr76,
First it would be helpful if you post the exact model, year and OS version you have.
    > The LED light is on but only when the laptop is closed<
So that light is the sleep indicator and tells us that the laptop is going to sleep when you close the lid. That would be normal behavior so the machine is still working. Possibly you're experiencing a backlight failure. With the machine supposedly "on" use a flashlight to carefully examine the screen. Do you see the desktop? Yes? machine is still running and something is wrong with the backlight.
You should immediately backup your computer or at the very least pull vital files off. With the computer hooked to another Mac (The way this is done depends on the exact MacBook, E.g.FireWire 800 to FireWire 800.) Then you restart the computer and hold the "t" key down. This puts your MacBook into "target mode":
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
Once your files are off try an SMC reset:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Are you able to get the backlight back on by opening and closing the display? Yes? Broken backlight cable refer to qualified service place. Even if it doesn't come on and you can still see the desktop with a flashlight it is still probably the backlight. Could be the a backlight problem also.

My Iphone 4 shut off and wont turn back on. If I do a reset with the power and home buttons will I for sure lose all data that hasn't been backed up on my computer in the last week?

    No.
A reset is very similar to rebooting your computer.
