Computer rejects audio cds/doesn't mount on desktop

I tried to listen to a CD I bought today on my computer and the drive will take the CD, make a bit of noise as if it's trying to read it, and before the CD is even mounted on the desktop, it ejects the CD on its own. This has only happened once before when I tried to put in a Dual Disc. Usually the CD will atleast mount on the desktop. I'd appreciate any feedback on this issue! Thank you.

I have had the same problem with my brand new iMac. I did all kinds of checks, with brand new music CDs working in two other macs, resetting nvram etc etc., but the problem still persisted. It would only accept DVDs, but not pristine Adobe installation discs (working on my other two macs), music CDs or VCDs. I also had problems with front row not working after one or two minutes.
I called apple support and after going through every possible step they said this was another case of DOA - dead on arrival - so they are now replacing the iMac with a new one.
Call apple support and let them guide you through. It seems these drives from Matshita (or whatever) have a high rate of malfunction.
Good luck!

  • IMac (10.6.8) won't mount audio CDs, won't mount lens cleaner.

I'm on an iMac running 10.6.8 and recently I've had problems getting audio CDs to mount. I've gone into the iTunes settings as well and just asked it to "Show CD". I also purchased a Memorex OptiDisc lens cleaner, I read many suggestions on the community about trying that. It won't mount. It rejects it just like all other audio CDs, and ONLY audio CDs. I ran a permissions repair and tried to reset the PRAM (which may or may not have worked, not sure). What do I do?

I honestly don't know about the CDs issue. I noticed it last semester when I tried to play a Michael Jackson CD for a class assignment (we were analyzing songs from different time periods, and I got Quincy Jones). If it had started to prior to that I'm not sure, but I had to insert that CD about three times before it would mount. At that point I just riped it because I knew I'd be listening to it approximately 100 times, turned out to be a good idea. It quit on me completely when I was trying rip some soundtracks (which I am betting are sony since the films were releaed through sony), I got 3 of them done and then nothing. Which *****. And what't the issue with SONY CDs. if you don't mind my picking your brain furter?
I didn't hear a bong, but I think my earbuds were plugged in. Is there a special way of doing the PRAM reset with the wireless keyboards?

  • Audio CDs won't mount

Briefly, the problem is this: Audio CDs inserted into a drive will not mount, and the system refuses to eject them. DVDs and data CDs mount/eject properly. This isn’t a hardware problem, nor a problem with the CDs themselves. Problem disappears when the Mac is booted off a system install DVD.
    *More details:*
    • The CDs don’t show up as icons in the Finder.
    • Disk Utility doesn’t see them either, but offers the eject button on the drive. When pressed, Disk Utility hangs for about 30 seconds, them comes back with an error: +‘Eject Failed. The disk “PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-109” could not be unmounted.’+
    • The Terminal.app version of Disk Utility fails as well: +drutil tray eject+
    • The keyboard eject button and the eject menu also fail.
    • The only way to get the disc out of the drive is to reboot and use one of the various disk ejection techniques (e.g. holding down the mouse button).
    • Discs inserted into an external FireWire drive behave the same way. The disc is locked in the drive by Mac OS X, and tray eject button on the drive is disabled. (Power cycling the drive, and hitting the eject button before Mac OS X scans the disc will eject it.)
    • From Terminal.app, doing a +ls /Volumes/+ displays only the boot HD. df also fails to show audio CDs
    • Logging out and into another account reproduces the problem (i.e. it isn’t a user preference file problem).
    • When booted from a DVD, the problem goes away; returns when booted from HD. This suggests a problem with one of the Mac OS X system files.
    • May be related to the fact that audio CDs usually mount with the generic name "Audio CD”
    • fsck -f has been run
This problem occurred while ripping music CDs in iTunes. All of a sudden, the iMac refused to mount a music CD. After rebooting and freeing the CD from the drive, i discovered the iMac would no longer mount any other music CDs, including ones i had mounted only minutes before. So it isn’t a bad CD causing these symptoms. And since i have two drives, and the problem began occurring on both drives simultaneously, it’s not a drive hardware failure.
I believe Jay Chow, in this post, may be on the right track. But he doesn’t seem to know what’s causing the problem.
    Has anybody solved this problem?
Please don’t suggest repairing permissions, resetting parameter RAM, and the usual “cure alls.” Clearly this is related to a system file on the HD. The drive checks out fine.
    Thanks in advance.

    Solved!
I made a costly mistake in my troubleshooting: Logging out, then into another account reproduced the problem, but rebooting and logging into a different account — without logging into the tainted account† — didn’t. A subtle but important difference (as that does imply a user preference/data problem, and exonerates the system files).
The culprit ended up being the Gracenote Media Database file: ~/"Library/Preferences/CD Info.cidb”
Here’s my guess about what’s going on: When an audio CD is inserted, the currently active user’s Gracenote Media Database is consulted. If the database is corrupt, it can poison system RAM. From that point on, "all bets are off" for all users until the system is rebooted.
For reasons i don’t recall, i also replaced the file: ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.Gracenote.plist (I only mention this in case someone else having similar difficulties is reading this, and replacing the CD Info.cidb file alone doesn’t solve the problem.)
† I think you have to log into the tainted account and try to load an audio CD before the problem actually arises.

  • External Hard Drive Doesn't Mount on Desktop through FireWire 400

I have an external hard drive that mounts on the desktop when connecting to my iMac via USB, but it fails to appear on the desktop when connecting via FireWire 400. It was glitchy in Tiger as well, and had problems since installing Leopard. I was able to get it to work once, after using Leopard Cache Cleaner (a 3rd party program), disconnecting the hard drive, and unplugging the iMac. I moved my computer this week, and had to unplug it and when I powered it back up, the hard drive doesn't appear on the desktop again through FireWire 400 (still works fine with USB). It also doesn't appear in Disk Utility through FireWire.
What good are FireWire if they fail to recognize a hard drive so often?!

upgrade to latest system, that computer will accept, then try again

  • IPod- persistant crashing and doesn't mount on desktop when connected...

I bought my iPod about 4 months ago and it crashes all the time - every time i mount it i have to unplug it hold down the menu + middle button do a manual reset and then try again, when i'm updating my iPod it will also sometimes crash.
+(Not sure if this is releavant, but may help; the second time i connected my iPod to my mac after buying it, i had to do a complete software restore, as i got the message that the iPod was currupt.)+
i also have a click wheel iPod (uses FireWire), and my Dad has a iPod video 60GB (uses USB) and niether of them crash as much or need a manual reset to mount on the desktop. i'm just wondering if my iPod is faulty and i need to get it exchanged? or has anyone else experienced this with their iPod and knows a solution??
it seems to me that a FireWire connection is faster than USB, would it be possible to get my iPod Video to work over a FireWire connection, rather than USB?

Well youre not alone on this got this same problem it was working fine then had problems accesing files as harddisk use now it crashed tried restoring and thsi morning appeared to have been back to normal but NO FILES! I hope i can recover my data its so frustrating

  • ATA Hardrive doesn't mount to desktop

I am working on an old PowerMac 6500 for a friend, trying to retrieve his data.
I removed the ATA/IDE drive from the PowerMac, connected it to his iBook G4 with a USB Universal Drive Adapter and it did not mount to the iBook's desktop. I tried different jumper settings, Master (which it should be) Single, Cable Select and without a jumper, without any luck. I also used another 3.5" ATA drive that I had here as a test. That drive mounted fine. My friend, the PowerMac owner, said that the hard drive was working fine the last time he powered it on, about one and a half years ago. The drive spins up with some clicking noises, the USB Drive Adapter lights come on, but no mounting.
Is it posible that the iBook G4, running Leopard will not recognize the ATA drive because it is running OS 9?
Thanks in advance for your insight on this.

The drive spins up with some clicking noises,
    The drive is failing/failed.
Multiple attempts to use will further damage sectors as the head crashes the platter.

  • Time Capsule Hard Drive Doesn't Mount on Desktop

I just installed my Time Capsule, and everything Wi-FI works fine. However, the built-in 1TB hard drive appeared only once--and even then only fleetingly--on the desktop. Every backup I try to do on the 1TB hard drive fails.
    Anyone experience this problem?
    HDW

Just how did you map to this drive in "drive window?" I can see the drive in a window I open when clicking on "TimeCapsule" in the navigation pane for the "TimeCapsule." [Follow?] I can even save a file to the hard drive in the TimCapsule, but my backups continue to fail with the message that the drive image cannot be created.
I've even tried erasing the hard drive using the AirPort utility (just updated the software). I can fast erase, but the full erase works forever without advancing the progress bar.
I think I have a hard dribe problem.

I've got a motorola 360 and it has a mp3 player, in manual says that you just need to plug the usb cable to see the transflash card of the phone on the desktop to drag pictures or music if you want to, but when I connect the cable nothing happens.

  • I just updated iTunes to 10.5.0.142 on Windows 7. Now it doesn't recognize audio CDs

After updating iTunes to 10.5.0.142 this morning, iTunes doesn't recognize audio CDs. I ran the diagnostics for my DVD drive, and it said everything was OK, but the CD name doesn't show in the navigation bar, nor does the list of songs appear. I tried with several different pre-recorded commercial CDs.
Ctrl E DOES eject the CD.
Also Help-->iTunes Help ends up with an eror "Not Found--The requested URL /itunes/win/10.5/ was not found on this server."

I find a way to add music.
    Make sure iTunes is closed.
Go to the song file on your computer. If the file has the little black musical iTunes symbol as its icon, just double click the file. It should open up in iTunes and stay in you library.
If the little black musical iTunes symbol isn't next to the file, right click the file and go to "Open With" and then click on "iTunes". It should open up in iTunes and stay in your library.
Yeaaa its the long way but that's the only way for now, unfortunately.

  • XFCE: Audio CDs Not Mounted until Clicked in Thunar

    Hello!
Audio CDs are visible in Thunar, but it seems they don't get mounted till clicked in the file manager - they show up then in Rhythmbox.
Is there any way to mount the CD automatically once put in the drive?
    Thanks in advance!

Audio CDs don't show up in media players like Rhythmbox unless 'initialized' by clicking on the audio CD device entry in Thunar.

  • I have burned 3 audio cds and none of them work in my computer or car.

I have burned 3 audio cds from my mac and none of them work in my car or computer and the last time I made a cd 3 weeks ago everything worked fine. Help is it the new itunes 10????

What type of disc did you burn? Audio CD, data disc or MP3 disc. To play in the car, it's best to choose audio CD.

  • Mounting audio CDs on osx 10.8.4 fails

    Hi out there,
I have read many tips about this going wrong, however none of the solutions paths provided did help me. Yes I checked filesystem, deleted CD preferences, updated iTunes etc. The situation hasnt changed: standard CDs do mount w/o problem on my superdrive. However "official" audio CDs do not. My selfmade data cds, audio CDs and DVDs including ready baught DVDs do mount the corersponding app. My feeling is that iTunes is not found and no other application for Audio CDs and thats why the CD is ejected after three tries of mounting them. Needless to say they dont show up in df command, disk utilty or finder. Of course I checked system preferences first and all media should open their standard app. I havent installed any non apple apps for music or DVDs. This is just bad and any input for more in depth trouble shooting more than welcome.

Clean the Optical Drive. The lens that reads CDs might be dirty or have fuzz stuck on it.
for example, see > CD and DVD Lens Cleaning Kit
Clean the CDs. Optical superdrives are finicky and do not like dirty, filmy, finger printed or scratched CDs.

  • The Superdrive on my MacBook Pro ejects audio CDsa few seconds after they are inserted. This happens with both prerecorded CDs I have bought in music stores AND with audio CDs I have recorded myself, on the very same computer, via iTunes.

The Superdrive on my MacBook Pro ejects audio CDs just a few seconds after inserting them. This happens both with original audio CDs I have bought in music stores AND with audio CDs I have recorded myself, on the very same computer, via iTunes. The same does NOT happen with data CDs (e.g., stuff in mp3 format), which are read just fine. This behaviour started a couple of weeks ago, until then everything had worked just fine for years. I am running iTunes 11.1 under Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Any idea?

  • Equium L40 - CDDVD doesn't recognise Audio CDs

    Hi,
I recently bought an Equium L40 and it's fine except that the CDDVD drive doesn't seem to recognise Audio CDs. The drive just whirs and grinds for a few seconds, and then stops. DVDs play correctly. The Audio CDs that I've tried play correctly on other machines. I've tried changing the AutoPlay settings to "Ask me every time" but it doesn't seem to help. Has anyone seen this problem before ?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Regards,
    Chris

    Hello Chris
Have you tested it with different original music CDs (older and newer one)?
Can you see content of these CDs in Windows Media Player?
I tried it on my P200 with two original music CDs and there is no chance to start them from Windows Explorer or to see the content there. Start Windows Media player and I hope it will work.
    Please post the result.
