Computer renamed automatically after 10.5.7 update

The standalone Combo update I did on my two Macs went generally well even if so many experienced major problems (read other threads). I just got the recurring blue screen when restarting my iMac (only) but this was solved simply by shutting it off and on.
However, on my MacBook Pro (only), my computer has been automatically renamed with "(2)" after the original name. I don't understand how and why? Can I fix it and put back the original name? How to do so without screwing it up?
If I keep the new (2) name appendix, will it cause future problems on my MBP itself or on my external Time Machine back-up?

Thanks for your comment.
However... two things...
1- My two Macs (iMac and MBP) definitely have two different names... nothing even similar. So I don't thing that the cause of my problem specified in the other thread had anything to do with my network and my computer names. But I was able to rename it anyway.
2- Since I removed the "(2)" addition to my MBP's computer name, I now have a new problem: I am unable to get back in time in Time Machine. The back-ups still show in the Finder external drive subfolders but when I open the TM app itself, it is frozen in the present view of my Mac. I see the previous backup dates/time in the right hand side scolling bar, but I cannot access the previous back-ups, either with the back arrow or using the side scroll bar. As I mentioned in the other thread, I noticed that after I renamed my computer through the System Preferences->Sharing->Edit screen, the subfolder of my external drive (a brand new Seagate FreeAgent Desk) was still showing "computer name (2)" until I ran a manual Time Machine back-up. Then, the folder was put back to the original "computer name". Where did I screw up?
If you can help me here, thank you. Otherwise, I might start a new topic since this is a different problem.

I have a question regarding my txt/alert tones. I recently updated my iPhone 5's software without first backing it up on iCloud or my computer (oops). After my phone finished updating, i lost the new ringtones and txt/alert tones i had bought. I connected my iPhone to my computer and sync'd it hoping that it could download my purchases from the itunes store and then put them back on to my phone but no such luck. When i look at my iphone on my computer and look at tones, they do not show up at all. However, if i click on the "On This iPhone" tab and click on "Tones" the deleted ringtones and altert tones show up...they are just grey'd out and have a dotted circle to the left of them. I also tried to go to the iTunes store on my phone and redownload them and it tells me that i have already purchased this ringtone and asks me if i want to buy it again. I press Cancel. I know when i do that with music it would usually let me redownload the song without buying it again but it wont let me with the ringtones...so how do i get them back? any help would be greatly appreicated

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • CD/DVD (disk)drive on computer not working after 10.8.5 update

I have been having problems with this resently. Every time I try to load a CD or DVD into my computer, it doesn't recogenize it. It makes sounds like it's thinking and stuck and then after a lengthy period of time, spits out the disk and says that I had inserted a blank disk. Obviously it wasn't blank or I wouldn'd be trying to figure out what the hck is wrong with it here. I am so beyond frusterated because this all started happening right after the last update for the Os X operating system. can someone please help me here. I don't know what to do. My computer has NEVER done this before and I NEED it to start working again. And before anyone suggests it, yes I have restarted it... SEVERAL times.

    Hello DaniHime86,
We've an article that provides a few additional tips that can help get your Mac's SuperDrive working correctly again.
The drive accepts discs but they do not mount or are automatically ejected
Make sure the drive is not upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up.
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
The MacBook Air SuperDrive is designed to be used with MacBook Air and Mac mini computers that do not have a built-in optical drive. For best results, connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
OS X 10.7 Lion or later: Open System Information by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click System Report.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store for additional troubleshooting, evaluation, or service.

  • All my computer settings reset after latest Tiger OS update. Please help..

    Hi,
I just updated the Tiger OS (10.4.4 8G32) automatically - through Software update. After the update all my settings on the computer are reset, including Dock, Mail, Safari etc. And each time I restart the computer they are reset again.
How can I fix this? Thanks!

Have you ever checked your preferences with Preferential Treatment? Might not be it, but worth a try.

  • Screen froze up and computer became unresponsive after 10.7.1 update

I updated yesterday to 10.7.1 and after the update the computer screen froze and then had white blocks on the screen in a pattern.  Now the screen is black and it will not boot up?
    Does anyone have any ideas?
I have done a PRAM and SMC reset and it still does not work.

I had something very similar happen. I shut the lid on my MacBook. When I opened it up, I tried to type in my password (I have it password protected when it sleeps) and none of the keystrokes did anything. I had to hit the power-off button to cold boot the computer.

i think your best bet is to uninstall itunes 9 & go back to whatever itunes you opened your phone with in the first place,& stick with that & also do a reset on your phone, ive heard so many problems with itunes9 that i'stick to itunes8,even though i keep getting messages to upgrade to 9. good luck.

  • Computer Self-Rebooting After 10.6.5 Update

This morning, my computer prompted me to update to 10.6.5. Since then, the computer has self-rebooted twice when idle. I have never run into this behavior before with any version of Mac OS. Any suggestions on what to do at this point would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I may be showing my naivete here, but shouldn't it be free with AppleCare?
Most Original MBPs are beyond the 3 years when AC would still be active, so I didn't think to ask if the MBP was covered under extended AppleCare coverage. Even while covered by AC, I've never had a callback, but I'm sure they'll ask for a credit card number if it does cost, and then you can decide.
As far as SafeBoot is concerned, I may try that next.
No harm trying, and will clear out some caches that may not have been cleaned in awhile.
So far, it has not rebooted itself since the permissions repair.
And another school of thought: don't fix what ain't broke. So you may wish to just run things as they are and if the problem stops, no worries.

  • My computer locked up after downloading the iTunes update

I downloaded the update from iTunes and now my computer is locked up.

Have you done a "hard reboot"? Press the power button and hold for 5-10 seconds till it shuts down and restart.
Worst case, unplug it. Let it set for 30 seconds, plug it back in and boot it up.

  • Computer hibernates automatically after sleeping for X amount of time.

I recently bought a VPS and have been sleeping my old personal server when it's not in use.  However, I find that after putting it to sleep, it'll actually go into hibernate after some amount of time.   I would prefer this *not* to happen so that I could easily wake the machine with WOL.  Was hoping someone could point me in the right direction as to what might be causing this.
I have the acpid and cpufreq daemons which might affect this.  Both of these are setup with the default configurations.  I have laptop mode installed but *not* in the daemons array/running.
In order to put the machine to sleep, I am simply using "pm-suspend".   Does the default pm-suspend script cause the machine to hibernate after a specified time?  Or, perhaps a script that comes with laptop-mode that is being run on suspend?
Appreciate the help in tracking this down!

You can do it with a time schedule in System Preferences > Energy Saver > Schedule.. button.

  • Computer startup failure after software update

After downloading the recent OSX software update last week, I shut down for the day. Upon restarting the next day, the computer won't start up. It gets to the point of the grey screen with apple logo (though no progress indicator). It also won't start in safe mode either. Anybody had similar issues or has any wise ideas about fixing? Thanks.

"After downloading the recent OSX software update last week..."
I take it you are referring to the Tiger v.6 update?
The first time that you restart after installing the update, the computer does not actually fully restart but instead stays on the grey screen for ages while indexing and optimisation are carried out (without a progress bar).
Once that sequence is complete, the computer then automatically re-boots.
Can you confirm that your computer has completed the above sequence, i.e. download update, restart to finish installation, grey screen for a long time, and then auto restart before OSX loads?
If it has completed the double-boot sequence following installation of Tiger v.6 then there may be other problems.

  • Application to restart computer when needed after software updates

We have a business requirement to not force a computer restart immediately after software updates have been installed. What possible solutions are there to detect if a restart is needed on the client and inform the user to restart, if nothing happens force
a restart within a few days.

    Hi,
Windows Update itself have this configuration. You could push the corresponding group policy to achieve it:
    Locate to the following path:
    Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update
find No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations
    entry.
