Computer Restarts and Shuts down

I just got a new computer its an new imac. My problem is while working in Firefox, Quark Express and Suitcase when scrolling with the scroll ball the computer shuts down by itself at least thats when it seems to happen. I transfered some files from my old computer using the mirgration software on the machine it seemed to be working fine but i may have copied something over that i wasn't suppose to and i can't figure what it was. I just transfered the applications and nothing else. Plus if i run a disk utlity it says in valid volume count or something like that its like 2 files more then the computer thinks it has. Ive repaired it but its not fixing it. Before i do a complete reinstall does anyone else have this problem or had this problem? and do u have any suggestions?

Is this happening with the AC plugged in or not and is the computer holding it's current time?

Just done a replacement of the pata DVD drive (its new and is working ok),  and a fresh clean  install of Snow Leopard with all updates, iMac 5.1 behaves strange, sometimes I start Google Chrome and look at youtube videos the computer freezes and shuts down immediately,
I believe its  related to overheating ?
iStat Pro shows GPU diode temp at 66 C, CPU at 48 C,  Fan rpms is around 1000
    Any ideas somebody ?
The hard disk has been previously checked with state of the art techniques that have confirmed that the hard disk drive is in perfect condition.

1.5-3 minute boot up as opposed to 15-20 seconds
    And
why it takes a long time to load a lot of things.
    I have restored this
    from a time machine partition.
TimeMachine is only a backup and restore, it won't fix issues in software and according to your information, doesn't even optimize the restore for best performance on boot hard drives.
What you need to do to regain your speed is to understand how your machine works
    Why is my computer slow?
Fix any and all issues in software following this list of fixes
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Then follow this defrag method I've outlined
How to safely defrag a Mac's hard drive
    Most commonly used backup methods
There shouldn't be need to reinstall OS X fresh unless your having file structure issues which if they are should appear when in the Steps, which then a zero erase and install will cure as well as any bad sector issues, the defrag step wouldn't be necessarry on a freshly installed system obviously as the files are written all together, not in portions all over the drive.
    Hope this assists.

  • I'm running Windows 7 and occasionally, Firefox will become completely unresponsive and grey out, then none of my programs will open at all, including the Start menu, forcing me to use a hard restart and shut down. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not able to close and restart Firefox at all, since the computer becomes completely unresponsive, save for mouse input. Task Manager is also of no use.

Ok, to copy the Drive from one to another, get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...

    Or SuperDuper...
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/
Believe it or not, anything on the Desktop uses 3 times the Resources of the Mac than if stored elsewhere, I can note a slowdown from just 30 items on the Desktop on a really fast Mac, so the less the better on the Desktop.
DW will not tell you about Bad Sectors, it's just the very best at Repair Directory damage & such.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Restart and shut down problems on MBA

    Hi Community,
I have the OS X Lion 10.7.3 Software on my MBA, since I bought it last year in the summer, so maybe my case is a warranty issue!
I normally put my MBA to sleep, but sometimes try to shut it down, it worked just fine before, but since a couple of days it doesn't restart and
won't shut down, the gray wheel modus until I press the shut down button for couple of seconds. I don't won't to shut it down only this way,
there is obviously a problem. I already installed the new update from the software and it didn't even ask to restart, normally it has to restart after an update, right?
I have tried to shut it down from the guest account and it worked just fine.
So it would be great, if someone else has some tips to this issue.
    Thx,
    Yulya

If you boot into Lion recovery mode (boot holding the command and R keys down), bring up Disk Utility and do a repair disk. Also repair permissions while you're there.  If that completes without error, reboot using the Safe Boot by holding the shift key down when booting. That may take longer than normal. If that completes, try a regular boot.
If issue still remains, download the 10.7.3 combo update from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1484 . Before installing it, bring up Disk Utility (on your hard drive in applications/utilities) and repair permissions. Install the combo update, then repair permissions again.
If those steps don't fix it, the next step may be to reload 10.7, however, you may want to take it to the Apple store to see if they have any other guidance. It doesn't sound like a hardware problem, though.

  • Computer freezes and shuts down automatically

    Hi,
I'm playing SimCity 4 and it looks like the CD is just fine but my mini mac keeps freezing up & then shuts down automatically. Computer meets system requirements of OS X 10 & up, Can it be the memory? If it is, can I get more virtual memory & how? Can it be something else? I know very little about my mini mac. Thanks for the help.

Guess the first question would be, how much memory does the Mini currently have? Below are the specification required to play the game:
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.2.3 or later
CPU Processor: PowerPC G3 or later
    CPU Speed: 500MHz or faster
    Memory: 256 MB or higher
Hard Disk Space: 2.4GB free disk space
Video Card (ATI): Radeon 7500 or better
Video Card (NVidia): GeForce2 MX or better
Video Memory (VRam): 32 MB or higher
    Media Required: CD Drive
It should have at least these requirements, so you could try to reinstall the graphics drivers.

  • Emptying the trash makes my computer freeze and shut down

Hello. Everytime I try to empty the trash, my screen goes black and I get a message that I have to shut down. The computer totally freezes and the only thing I can do is shut down. I've tried deleting the trash using terminal and the same thing happens. Any suggestions as to how to resolve this?? thanks
( I don't think it's a file that is in the trash, as i have tried emptying the trash with just one file in it, a quicktime movie, and i still get the same problem)

    HI dgx,
Any and all "trash" issues, look here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/trash.html

  • Retina display 2012 restarts and shuts down the screen - Shows panic report

I installed Yosemite 6 days ago. The first three days was running Ok. But two days ago I was working and the computer just crashed and when it was re-starting suddenly power offs the display. I wasn't able to tun it on again for an hour. I mean it powers on, because the keyboard illumintates but the screen does not powers on, it does not shows image.
After leaving the computer to "col down" I'm able to see the image again and I found this report:

Same thing here, with same report. I haven't got issues before installing Yosemite. From what I gather here from other posts, it seems we need Logic board replacement...

  • After restoring from time machine, I get a screen with an apple, my user icon, and sleep, restart, and shut down options. When I click on my user icon, nothing happens.

    Any suggestions?

Run through the list of general fixes here, perhaps one or more of them will get things to work again.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
If not you can likely retrieve your files this way, if they are not encrypted,
Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive
then use Step #20 in the above link to reinstall everything and return those files
Think about having alternate backup and restore options to avoid this type of issue.
When TM fails to restore properly, it's a royal mess to fix as you can see.
    Most commonly used backup methods

  • MacBook fan broken (computer overheats and shuts down)

I'm pretty sure my MacBook has a broken fan. I can't hear it, even when the temp is measuring upwards of 180 degrees, and Fan Control is set to run it at a minimum of 3500 RPM and reads several thousand RPM, even though the fan is off. I think it broke yesterday, but previously there had been strange clicking noises. I can run it for a while when I'm not doing anything intensive (~135°–145°), but when I run BOINC or try to play games, the CPU heats up to over 180° and it powers off in a few minutes. Does anyone else have this problem? Is the fan stuck, or did a wire come loose, or is the fan motor broken?

They should be able to fix the fan with out doing anything to the drive. They might be able to do it while you wait. I would call and talk to them about it. I personally keep a back up of my system every week and always before a repair. I also have never lost data on a repair yet. I had a fan replaced on a Powerbook and had no problems with my data.
    Thanks for the .

@Yaoguai Repair your phone with PC Companion
    http://support.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/pc-companion/

Hi there,  I have searched through the forum a bit, but haven't found the exact same problem I have yet, so here it is. I got my phone close to a month ago, and it was working fine, battery life great, everything running smoothly till about week ago.I started to noticed sometimes in the notification has the mobile data is disabled sign, which when I'm at home connecting to wifi, this would indicate the phone has reastarted on it's own. Then I did see it happening with my own eyes as the phone sat right next to me. Then I started to notice that it would sometimes just completely turn off on it's own.  So here's what I have done so far:1. Already performed PC companion fix 2 times, and made sure all my software is up to date; didn't fix the problem.2. Installed the bare minimum of apps that I would normally use; problem still occurs.3. Curretly testing it out in safe mode to see if it'll do the same thing (which loads no downloaded apps) So my questions are:1. if safe mode running no additional apps solves the problem, what am i suppose to do? download no apps? then I might as well go back to a old brick phone or something if I can't run my apps for communicaton purposes (That's prretty much all i have anyways, various email clients, and chatting apps... not really games)2. is this a phone problem i should just send the phone back to xperia care to take care of? I bought two phones recently in Taiwan, one for myself which is this Z3 Compact, and the other is for my boyfriend, a T2 Ultra. I already had to send the T2 Ultra in because the SD mount was faulty and wouldn't read SD card properly, and now my own phone too? I must say I am extremely disappointed Sony! I have been a Sony user for many years, and does this indicate a reduced level in quality control? Please don't disappoint us. Thanks.

If you already use Sophos, then be aware of this if you are using Mavericks: OS X Mavericks- Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause unexpected restarts
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

  • HT1222 iTunes won't quit and won't allow the computer to be shut down

Does this update fix the fact that once iTunes is launched I can no longer quit the program (it automatically restarts) and it won't let me shut down the computer (or force quit) or restart. This problem just started. Once launched, you can't quit iTunes and you can't shut down your computer. You can't install software or perform any function that requires iTunes to be closed. I have searched the web and have found other users with the same issue but no real solutions (or reasons why it is happening). It is weird that iTunes has a mind of its own and can just cancel shut down or restart. It immediately relaunches if you force quit. I no longer can listen to my music because I am afraid to launch iTunes! I was able to choose restart once and then shut down from the restart screen the first time it happened but after that it would not even let me restart. Once it worked by logging out user and shutting down from that screen but then the next time it wouldn't allow it. It is like it learns how you are working around iTunes to shut down your computer and then it figures out how to cancel it. Eerie and annoying. Any ideas? I should say that I am running an iMac with OS 10.6.8. Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Press Alt, Command and Esc keys, choose Mail and force quit it. Then, turn off your Mac.
If it doesn't work, hold Control, Command and Eject keys to force a restart, or hold the Power button until your MacBook Pro turns off

    We need clarification here.
Please don't just state version numbers, also state which software.  iTunes 10.7 requires OSX 10.6.8 or higher.  Leopard is OSX 10.5.8.  You have two alternatives right now.  One is to stay with Leopard for a while (ultimately you should upgrade) and install iTunes 10.6.3 which is the last version to work with Leopard.  This should work with iOS6 on an iPhone4.  The other is to call Apple and order OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and upgrade the computer to 10.6.8 which will allow you to run iTunes 10.7.  The caveat is we know nothing about which computer you run and if it even can run any system higher than Leopard.
    Here is iTunes 10.6.3
    iTunes 10.6.3 - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1575
If you want to try upgrading:
Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About this Mac" and "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).  If it says something about Intel or Core Duo or Core 2 Duo in the processor you can upgrade to Snow Leopard (assuming you have sufficient RAM/"memory").  If it says PPC or PowerMac, you cannot.
Kappy 08/2012 post on upgrading to Snow Leopard, then Lion or Mountain Lion -  https://discussions.apple.com/message/19401628 - including how to get Snow Leopard and Lion since Apple removed them from the online store.
It would help when posting issues here if you would state exact error messages you see.  "It's still not working!" while a description of the situation does not speed us to a diagnosis of the underlying issue.
