Computer restarts or crashes everytime ipod is connected.

hi
everytime i connect my new ipod video to the computer, the computer either crashes or restarts. I used to have an ipod colour so i know that it isnt the ipods problem. When i connect it to my other computer it works fine but the problem eith that one is that it has usb 1 and is extremeley slow, anmd it took me 6 hours to put 1400 songs on it. I have been suggested to do something about the tcpip.sys file from and apple person and b noir, but i have no idea what that means and also been suggested to carry out a repair installation. I dont exactly know what that is and i dont have the xp cd so i wouldnt be able to reinstall it if i did a repair installation. Can someone please suggest something or how to do a repair installation without the windows xp cd???
please i am so desperate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • HELP - Mac crashes everytime iPOD is connected

I have a 2nd generation iPOD. Haven't had any problems until this week. I connect via firewire, iPOD screen say's "Do not disconnect" as normal, then black screen comes up with "You need to restart your computer. Hold down for several seconds or press the restart button". Tried installing any/all new software updates but it didn't help. Also tried trashing iPOD preference files just in case. Been searching forums and web for 3 days and can't find any support for this problem. FYI - the iPOD plays fine by itself.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I tried the fix that Mary suggested. Used my iMac boot disk to boot the computer and then launched the disk utility from the File menu. My iPod was on the dock when my computer booted, but it did not mount and was not available in the volumes window. I simply just picked it up out of the dock and placed it back in and the drive appeared as a volume. I first selected repair disk and it said there were errors that could not be repaired. Before I erased the iPod drive, I selected "verify" and then I selected "repair" and that fixed the problems. I rebooted the computer from the HD, launched iTunes and the problem was solved.
    Thanks Mary!

  • ITunes crashed everytime ipod touch is connected

Have brand new ipod touch 3rd generation and running iTunes 9.1.1 (ie latest) on a 15" macbook pro with system 10.5.8. Every time I attach the ipod touch the iTunes freezes with the whirling pointer. I have to use finder to force quit iTunes. I can run iTunes fine if the iPod is not attached. The iPod works but I can't sync or add content to it without the iTunes.
I have followed the advice on other threads and completely re-installed the latest iTunes after removing all the various bits from the various libraries and restarting. When the ipod was first attached it asked to be named, and then to be registered. When it reached the register stage is when the program crashed. Each time I attach the iPod it is seen on the side bar (something that did not happen when I had not completely re-installed itunes), but immediately freezes the program. I reset all the functions on the iPod and it was recognised again, but iTunes died as soon as the iPod was named on subsequent attempts. I have been unable to find any thread which can help further.
    I hope someone can help.

try this user tip (it's for an iPhone but give it a shot anyways):
Apple worked it out over the phone. Hopefully this will be very useful to other people having the same problem when the more basic fixes don't work.

    1. Make sure the iPhone isn't connected. Drag iTunes to the Trash. This won't affect the iTunes music, which will still be there when iTunes is reinstalled.

    2. Go to user/Library/Preferences and delete the following files:

    com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist

    com.apple.iTunes.plist

com.apple.iTuneshelper.plist

    3. Go to the Mac hard drive Library/Preferences and delete the same files, if they exist there.

    4. Go to /System/Library/Extensions and delete the file AppleMobileDevice.kext

    5. Go to /Library/Receipts/ and delete the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pkg file.

    6. Restart the Mac.

    7. Empty Trash.

    8. Re-download iTunes and install it.
    Connect iPhone.

  • Computer will not boot when iPod is connected

    Hi everyone,
First time Mac user here, so I'm not very experienced when it comes to troubleshooting - there may be a very simple fix for this, but I've searched online and come up with nothing so far.
I've recently bought a 20" Intel-based iMac (Core 2 Duo). I'm using Boot Camp (1.1.2 Beta) to dual boot with Windows. I already owned a 30gb iPod, which has previously been used with a Windows laptop. The iPod has disk mode enabled as I use it for transporting data as well as music and video.
Now that I'm using the iMac as my main comptuer, I keep the iPod docked & connected whenever I'm not out of the house in order to keep it charged & synchronised. However, if the iMac has to restart for any reason (like switching between Mac OS and Windows, or rebooting after a system update), it will not continue booting after making the chime sound. The screen remains white, holding the option key does not display the Boot Camp menu, and no matter how long it's left like this it will not continue to boot either OS. Pressing the Power button causes the computer to immediately switch off. Turning it on again after removing the iPod from the dock results in it booting normally.
Has anyone had any similar experiences?
    Thanks

    hi xJamez
    Welcome to Discussions
Because you said you use the iPod as an external hard drive, I am going to assume that it's not a nano, shuffle, or mini. What I suspect is that the computer is trying to boot from the iPod because the iPod actually has a hard drive in it, and the iMac thinks that it's an external hard drive that it can boot from. In the future, I would disconnect the iPod before each time you shut-down or restart your iMac.
    Hope this Helps

  • Computer restarts after syncing 80gb ipod classic

Every time I sync my ipod classic,(80gb)the computer restarts itself. How do I stop this? I'm using windows XP home edition. Any advise will be greatly appreciated

Are you getting any sort of blue screen when the PC reboots? If so, what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x\[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
If the blue screen mentions a specific file (for example, “ati3duag.dll”), let us know what that is called too. (Exact spelling, please.)
Here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
If you're not seeing a blue screen (or if you’re just seeing a flash of a blue screen before the PC reboots), we can use the following technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.
With those settings in place, does a blue screen appear before the PC reboots?

  • ITunes on my computer does not recognize my IPod when connected to my computer

When my Ipod is connected to the computer, it does not recognize there is a device. I have been able to sync my Ipod to my Itunes in almost 4 months. Songs transfer to Ipod but the playlists do not. I have tried to figure out the problem and nothing has worked so far to correct the problem. I hope someone is able to help me.

    Hello bre8613,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice concerning recognition issues:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1538
Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch may not appear under Devices in iTunes after you connect it to your Windows PC. Any of the following may also occur:
The device cannot be restored in iTunes.
An exclamation point, question mark, plug symbol, or "X" appears next to the device's entry in Device Manager.
During an update or restore, the device may no longer be recognized by iTunes
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.

  • My ipod is not being recognised when i connect it to my computer and itunes crashes everytime i connect my ipod. Suggestions please?

I'm having problems with my ipod. Everytime I connect it to my computer, itunes crashes and it says that the device is not recognised. Any suggestions pleeease?

HI, if anyone can help, I appreciate it, I tried to
return it but lost the receipt and I bought it a week
ago so that kinda stings. Ok my PC froze today like
it did a million times before and I had to restore
it, after I restored it I tried to hooki up my ipod
and it said usb device not reconized. When I clicked
on that it said device is not reconized by windows. I
tried different usb ports and the same thing keeps
happening, but the ipod works when I hook it up to my
360 and all my songs are still on there. I also tried
re installing itunes and that didn't work either. If
anyone knows what I can do please help. Thanks.
I just got home from my dad's house and my ipod works fine on his PC, so I thought maybe my usb ports are faulty but all my other devices work on all my ports, the only thing that dosent work is my pod, so my pc isn't busted. If anyone knows what I can do please let me know, thanks for the help.

  • ITunes crashes when iPod is connected

Hello, I just got the 5th gen iPod and everytime I connect it to my powerbook g4 (10.4.3) itunes INSTANTLY crashes, as well as when trying to play a video itunes instantly crashes (this has been going on on and off since the video update) I am using itunes 6.1 and I've tried reinstalling it and I've restored the iPod? any advice?

I have the same prob here.
Mac Mini with OS X 10.4.3
    iTunes: 6.0.1 (3)
    QuickTime: 7.0.3
iPod Updater: either 2005-10-12 or the latest one 2005-11-xx
    iPod Video
    1. QuickTime can play .mov correctly
    2. problem: everytime i connect to my iPod Video to Mac mini, iTunes crashes immediately. After that, I tried to reinstall everything (including iTunes, iPod Updater) after cleaning everything related in the system (but iTunesHelper couldn't be removed until I restarted the OS) but in vain.
    3. iPod Video can sync with iTunes 6.0.1 (with updater 2005-10-12) correctly. Just cannot talk to my Mac Mini!
    Please help, thanks!

  • After iOS 4 update on iPod Touch, iTunes crashes when iPod is connected.

I just updated my iPod from 3.1.3 to iOS 4, and after all of that, when I plug in my iPod Touch 2G [version 4.0 (8A293)] to my laptop, iTunes crashes. A window pops up saying "iTunes has stopped working," and then iTunes closes automatically. When I do not already have iTunes open and I connect my iPod, iTunes will open and then close a few seconds later with the same pop up box.
I tried seeing if it was a syncing or connecting issue, so I turned off automatic syncing and the problem still exists. Therefore, I think it is a connection issue.
*Note: When I was updating to iOS 4, I left and came back to my computer with it running on idle. Could that have had an effect? If so, how can I just redo everything?
**Another note that may be helpful is that while I do still have all of my music and videos in iTunes (which works totally fine with no iPod attached), the videos and music is NOT on my iPod. But, my apps all work fine on my iPod.
I would really appreciate any sort of help I could get for this problem. I was really looking forward to the OS update, but now I am disappointed because of this major problem.
    THANK YOU for your help!

I would try moving the existing iPod backup file to a safe locations and let iTunes make a whole new one.  The location of of the backup file is:
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: If you do not see the AppData or Application Data folders, you may need to show hidden files (Windows XP,  Windows Vista and Windows 7), or iTunes may not be installed in the default location. Show hidden files and then search the hard drive for the Backup directory.

  • ITunes crashing when iPod is connected

iTunes has been crashing on my computer for the past few weeks some (not all) of the time when I connect my iPod for updating and recharging. The program doesn't quit all the time, as I stated, and it never immediately repeats itself when I relaunch the program and continue the update process. Also, the problem started before I updated to 7.2. I've done nothing else to iTunes other than the usual additions of a few songs and podcasts or fiddling with the equalizers of certain songs. And there's been no noticeable effect to the quality of my recordings, nor do any of them seem to be missing. Any ideas?

You are using the eject button to safely disconnect your iPod -aren't you?

  • IPod 80GB: My computer won't read the iPod is connected!

I plug the iPod in and it lights up, but it doesn't say it's plugged in. If I have it plugging in when I restart the computer it says it's connected but my computer won't start. It's just a black screen with a flashing white underscore.

    Welcome to the forum!
Remove the hard disk drive, and try booting without it, to see whether you'll get the LCD to light up.
What is the 7-character model number of your T43? It should be something like 26xx-xxx or 187x-xxx, it's located on a sticker at the bottom side of the machine, along with serial number and production date...
Good luck and let us know.

  • Itunes crashes when:adding folder, comp crashes when ipod is connected

Im having exactly the same problem except that:
    - It took more than 10 times to just install itunes without crashing or errors.
    - Itunes crashes each time I attempt to import a music folder.
    - My Windows XP computer freezes completely the moment my ipod video is connected, both when connected while pc is still off and while it is on.
I've read through the suggestions on the apple site and uninstalled and reinstalled countless times. If someone has some advice please share it with me.
    Thanks,
    Alex

You'll probably have better luck asking the question here -> Windows EightForums
iTunes isn't designed to work with Windows 8 or any beta software, so theres no suprise that it isn't working as expected.

  • Itunes crashes when iPod is connected and doesn't recognize it (iPod touch)

Help! Whenever I plug my iPod in my iTunes freezes! Both my iPod and iTunes work perfectly fine it's just when my iPods connected. It also doesn't recognize it but it appears on my computer. It was fine before and this problem only occurred very recently. I have the newest iTunes. Any ideas on what I could do? Thanks for your help

My problem still isnt solved however I have got further. This has taken me many hours but by searching for ages, i tried the msconfig idea on itunes. After following the instructions, i found that it stopped my itunes from crashing. I then found the root of the problem - it was the Apple Mobile Device which was interfering and crashing my itunes. So i deleted it and yes my itunes was not crashing however I need it to sync my ipod..hmm.. so if I reinstall it, it crashes my itunes and if I dont, I still cannot sync my ipod.
Im not too sure what to do now however I feel a sense of achievement for getting somewhere.. Thanks for your help again X

  • Itunes crashes if ipod is connected, help???

itunes version 6.0.4.2 crashed when i connect my ipod. i can see my ipod as an usb device and am able to transfer data (from and on) but it is not possible to do anything with itunes. i later installed itunes version 7.0.2.16 but that did not help either. also most of the files shown on the ipod are not accessible (videos and music) for whatever reason...
the only thing that i changed was the automatic synchronize option which i turned off.
if anybody knows what to do please help...

I discovered another thread posting which mentioned that Diego episodes were causing some sort of corruption which prevent the sync ad crashing iTunes. Deleted the podcasts from both iPhone (using swipe function) and iTunes (without iPhone connected) and it seemed to fix the problem.
